“Congrats to drugs for winning the war on drugs” is a phrase that is simply not true at all when you look at what the purpose of it was.

It was not to prevent the spread of drugs, it was to funnel Black people into prison and permanently curtail voting rights, to keep a provisional Jim Crow that could deflect criticism long enough to get the average white moderate to accept it, and to make the average white liberal’s dreams of “reform” still include the same framework.

Felons can’t vote because certain drug crimes were labeled felonies, because those drug crimes could be pinned on Black people and passed by or reduced to a misdemeanor on whites. Because you could cite the amount of (drug) felonies in an area (Black neighborhood) and assign more cops, militarized cops (why it was called a “war”), because you could claim random searches of suspicious individuals (Black people, including children) were necessary. The war on drugs worked. It was never about the fucking drugs.

I dont care if 9/10 of the people who use the wheelchair ramp arent actually in wheelchairs. As long as the 1 person who needs it has access to it.

I dont care if 9/10 people who use the automatic push button on the library door can actually push the door open themselves. As long as the 1 person who the door is too heavy for gets to use it.

I dont care if 9/10 people who buy the can tab opener, or the little guitar clamp that holds the chords for you, or the hand grip that helps you hold chop sticks, don't need any of it and just get it to "be lazy". As long as the one disabled person who needs it gets access to it.

I do not care. Oh my GOD I do not care. As long as there's a disabled person on this planet who the accessibility device will benefit, the accessibility device is necessary.

Also, if you're so worried about people being "lazy" by using accessibility devices, MORE worried than you are about disabled (visibly or not) people not having access to them, you have unchecked ableism you need to work through.

And given that we live in an era (debatably) post covid, there is a significant percentage of the population who are newly disabled with conditions like chronic fatigue and may be genuinely unaware of it! How many of those "lazy" people are actually invisibly disabled? And even beyond that, how many of those "lazy" people are overworked and tired and ground down to dust by capitalism? How many are new parents who aren't getting enough sleep and are exhausted?

If helping disabled people helps more than just disabled people, why is that a DOWNSIDE.

#for a brief time I was occasionally using a cane when at events where standing in place for hours was to be expected #I felt like I 'didnt need it THAT much' and that I was taking away from somebody who could use it more #listen #listen to me when I say this:#use the accessibility features that you need. when you need them.#don't worry about some arbitrary rules or threshold #just use the services or the equipment that you need #I didn't need the came for very long. I was actually just extremely physically busted from the job I was working at #once I found a new job I got better and that was great #but that's not always the case. sometimes you just become permanently disabled at 22 or 16 or 35 #learning that I could just buy a cane at CVS and use it as needed opened the door for me to #acknowledge that I am actually disabled. mostly I struggle with invisible disabilities #and using a cane to go to concerts for like 2 years was a good first step
