We present to you new designer in the shop - Julie Baird (Seluj Textile)
Last week Jane Doe shop got one new amazing designer. Her work is already flooding the streets of Belgrade and we are proud to give you a little insight into her work. Here is an interview where Jane meets Julie.
1. Please introduce yourself.
My name is Julie Baird and I have moved to Belgrade from NYC to start a business creating textile accessories.
2. What kind of materials do you use?
I like to source fabrics here in the city, sticking to wools, silks, linens and cottons.. I really love when I find a nice blend, such as wool/silk, etc. but it’s been challenging finding those.
3. How did you come to the idea to exhibit at Jane Doe shop?
In my first weeks of exploration here, a friend and I went by foot all around the city. She had discovered Jane Doe in a google search and we both immediately loved it. I’ve always been drawn to smaller boutiques with select offerings, and the fact that they had local designers really appealed.
4. How would you best describe a person who is wearing your design?
Luckily the person who would buy and wear one of my pieces can be almost anyone. I do tend to create more for women than men, but I think the person who really appreciates a handmade, classic accessory and who enjoys unique, locally made products will gravitate towards seluj.
5. What do you think about Belgrade design scene?
The design scene here is quite interesting because it’s small, but budding into something really fantastic. I have enjoyed coming across so many little gems tucked away within the city and speaking with the designers themselves. I look forward to seeing the design scene advance in the years to come.
6. You have been living in New York. Can you compare NY fashion scene with Belgrade scene?
The Belgrade Fashion scene is obviously a different movement than in NYC, however I do see some young designers here who have great creativity to offer. There isn’t the competition that exists in New York, which I think leaves room for those who persevere to launch and make it into larger markets. Living here feels so different in so many ways, but in regards to the Fashion scene, I do miss seeing people take risks or just enjoy playing with clothing in general. People really express themselves through the way they dress in Manhattan… putting such thought into each detail and I really hope that sense of playfulness and whimsy makes its way to Belgrade.
