He watched her get the plates, somehow finding himself wishing he knew his way around her kitchen just to be able to help and not having to awkwardly stand there while she prepared everything. âConnie? Really?â He asked with an amused shake of his head, but as he thought about it, it didnât sound that bad. He felt like people hardly ever called him any nicknames at all and usually blamed it on the fact that either his name wasnât suitable enough for nicknames or people werenât creative enough to come up with one. After a few moments, he shrugged his shoulders and flashed her a grin. âI like it; makes me sound cuter and more innocent than I really am.â
âWhatâs a relaxing afternoon without any pie? At least thatâs what my mum always said,â he told her, the grin on his lips widening. The memory of all the afternoons he had spent with his family, eating pie and talking about anything and everything, sent a wave of nostalgia through his body, which he tried to get rid of almost as soon as he noticed it. Waving off her apology, he smiled genuinely and took a moment to look around. âDonât worry about that. It took me a few months to properly settle in as well. If you need any help, let me know.â He shook his head at her question, taking one of the forks she had previously grabbed. âNo milk for me, thank you. I hope it tastes as good as it looks.â
âYeah Connie but I was also thinking Sparrow, you got this lithe build to you. Like you were built for flight,â James mused looking him over and puckering her lips in thought, looking up as she recalled a soldier called Sparrow only that was his last name. He was a bulky man if she remembered right but he had a laugh that reminded her of Santa and always warmed her from the middle out. She missed the men and women overseas and found it hard to talk about them, especially without mentioning Kincaid and Romero. It stung worse now since it was almost the one year anniversary of the bombing. Just shy of two weeks if she remembered correctly, but then again, how could she forget. It was the week before Halloween because Kincaid had been talking about how there was going to be a paintball war on base with some dressed as zombies. But that event never happened and Kincaid and Romero didnât walk away from that RECON mission. Neither did Xavier and at that thought Jamesâs demeanor saddened momentarily. Her smile fell and her eyes fogged over as she drifted to a different place and time, her body lingering in the present but Xavierâs fingers in her hair and his voice in her ears before Conor was speaking again snapping her out of her trance.
âMy mom wasnât really the home maker but our neighbor owned a bakery and sheâd bring me cookies and stuff after school,â James said leading Conor to the couch with her pie and a glass of milk. âI have soda and water too if you get thirsty or- I know- you want tea donât you?â she teased with a slow grin. âI havenât met a person here yet who didnât like tea.â
@violettebeaumont
He perked his eyebrows at Jamesâ reaction, a laugh escaping him. Truth be told, he knew wouldnât have been able to eat all of the food on his own, and â deep down â was of course hoping she wouldnât send him away, mostly because he desperately craved other peopleâs company.Â
A triumphant grin spread across his features when she âapprovedâ of what he had brought with him and he enthusiastically nodded his head before he followed her, stopping in front of the door and sliding off his shoes. âI sure am glad my taste in food is so good,â he said playfully as he walked inside. âWouldâve been a shame to walk all the way down here just to be sent away again. And to let that good stuff go to waste.â
James brought the food inside her bohemian abode and set it on the little island in her kitchen before turning to get some plates down from the cabinets. âYou have excellent taste in treats, Connie,â she teased using a nickname she rarely used mainly because she wasnât sure how he felt about it. In the military nicknames were a given, mostly like codenames. Hers had been Blondie and even some of her COs used the moniker to address her and sometimes James found herself giving people pet names without her even realizing it.
âIs this pie!? Oh my god I could kiss you,â she sighed pulling the slices carefully from the back and then grabbing forks so they could eat them out of the plastic trays the slices were nestled in. She opened her fridge and looked over at Conor. âExcuse the mess, been here four months and I still havenât completely moved in,â she explained pushing her blonde hair out of her face and smiling warmly. âHope itâs not too bad, uh you want milk or something else with your delectables?â

Daisy eyes widened, âI was kind of hoping youâd answer sheâs still too young,â she responded honestly, âIsnât it dangerous?â
James looked up at Daisy and stood with a warm and understanding smile. âNot as dangerous as back home, especially now. These waters are too cold for any predators and I wouldnât take her out far. Plus the board ensures she doesnât go under and if she does sheâs got something to help pull her back up, but she can learn at any age really. Iâll be around if and when you think sheâs ready and if she wants to learn, itâs really a great sport to be involved in. You meet some great people.â
Vi took the apple with a grateful smile. âIâm really bad for these. My grandmother had to give me a limit on them when I was a kid because I used to make myself sick eating them so much. Theyâre my favourites. So you need to make sure Iâm sensible,â She told James, with a laugh.
âI love this festival,â Vi told her, honestly, âWe used to come every year when I was a kid, I think I actually preferred it to Halloween. What about you? Is this your first experience of the festival? Yeah the bonfire is always good,â She grinned over at the girl when she said that, âAw, of course, I would love that!â
âIâll make sure to cut you off at like five,â James giggled as she bit into her own and sucked at the juice threatening to leak down her chin. It was like shotgunning a beer in the desert and she had to admit she had gotten pretty good at it. James licked her lips and wiped at her chin as Violette spoke.Â
âYeah,â James nodded, âThis is my first year in Harpoole and itâs a rough one itâs the first year without my boys and I miss em everyday but things like this keep me busy. It was one of the reasons I decided to stay in this area, there was a winter something or other when I passed through last year that was really fun and Iâm really enjoying this festival. Itâs beautiful here, how long have you been around Harpoole, Vi?â
Conor couldnât fight the feeling like between all of his work, he had neglected catching up with friends. It made him feel a little bad, especially since he always felt like it was his job to make sure they were doing okay. Now that he had a whole weekend to relax and to enjoy the festival, he figured it was a good time to visit some of them.
A grin spread across his lips at Jamesâ reaction. He held up a bag which contained some food he had previously bought at one of the stands on Main Street. âSorry. Figured you might be hungry, but if you donât want any, Iâll just go home and eat it by myself,â he responded casually and with a shrug of his shoulders.
âOh wait wait hold on now,â James hurried to say as she swung her legs around and sat up to look at Conor more closely. âYou eat all that youâll get sick and I know because Iâm a nurse,â she teased with a grin and held her hand in a staying gesture, âThereâs only one course of action, Con, and thatâs to let me help you eat it.â
James stood up from the hammock and padded across the hot deck into the sun warmed sand where Conor stood with a bag of goodies. James smiled at Conor cheekily as she peeked in the bag and winked at him. âYep this will do, you may come inside, but take your shoes off. I just swept,â she said taking the bag from his and rinsing her feet off on a small little stand and hose before hopping up onto the clean deck and swinging open her door. âCâmon.â
He didnât want to be here, honestly. But with his mother pestering him and telling him that she demanded stories and pictures, he had no choice. Of course, Jaxon being Jaxon did everything he could to avoid most of it. After consuming one too many beers, the slightly intoxicated man had trailed off elsewhere. He was doing his best to sober up a bit, which seemed to be working for the most part.
However, after a moment of getting lost in the once familiar place, Jaxonâs attention moved toward someone speaking. âHmm?â He began, looking up only to catch sight of the blonde nurse he had met a week or so ago. âOh, my apologies. I had no idea where I was wandering off to. I didnât mean to bother you, just.. well I guess I was just in need of fifteen minutes to breathe too.âÂ
James paused at the sound of the familiar voice and lifted her head from the pillow attached to the hammock she was currently occupying. Finding the guy from the hospital there was a bit of a surprise but she figured a lot of people would be roaming the beaches while they drank and ate and enjoyed the festival so she probably shouldnât have been all that surprised she ran into him- er- he found her.
âNo no Iâm sorry I snapped uh,â James swung her legs around and padded across her deck to unfold a beach chair onto the small deck and gesturing for the other to come on up. âCome on up, you can relax here for a minute. YOu want a soda or something? I made a smoothie not too long ago, might have some left,â she offered with a warm smile. âJust donât look inside, Iâm still moving in so itâs a wreck.â
âWell thank you, my knight in fluffy warm clothing,â he teased a bit, allowing the scarf to warm him up a bit. Oliver tried to pay for himself but she was too quick and he ended up giving her a warm smile. âThank you, really,â he murmured, taking a long sip of the drink, making a happy noise. âFuck this is so good,â the blond laughed. âExactly. Autumn here is better than any winter could ever be.â
âI grew up in California, we had summer all year round. If you wanted snow or changing leaves you had drive north for hours or leave the state entirely,â she said with a light laugh before smiling warmly at Oliver. âDonât mention it Ollie, what are friends for?â James liked Oliver, a lot, he was fun and warm. He never failed to put a smile on her face and she was grateful to have him in her life. She nodded for him to follow her and started along the street to continue looking at all the stands and merchants. Harpoole was suddenly a very busy place to be. âSo did you catch it from one of the little boogers you teach?â she teased smiling at him. âKids are walking petrie dishes of bacteria and germs,â she joked crinkling her nose and shaking her head. She giggled to show she didnât mean it and sipped her cider. âAre you on anything for it? I could get my friend to prescribe you an antibiotic or something probably.â

{ Ollie }:
âWhatâre you-â He cut himself off when she wrapped her scarf around him. âShouldnât you be wearing this?â Ollie asked worriedly, eyebrows knitting together. Pulling the edge of his shirt-neck up around his mouth and nose, he coughed a few times, grimacing as he swallowed. âIâm glad youâre enjoying yourself. Autumn here is like something out of a story book,â the man said dreamily. âRarely.â
âNo, no you wear it, you need it,â James insisted with a smile as she waved off his worry and then grimaced at his cough. âPoor Ollie you sound awful, come on Iâll buy you something hot,â she offered rounding the corner and fishing in her pocket for her money. She paid for two ciders and offered a cup to Oliver. âHere try this,â she said sipping her own cider and smiling with a crisp âAh.â She pouted when he said it rarely snowed and looked around at the trees. âThe leaves change yeah? Thatâs just as good I guess.â
{ Ollie }:
He smiled at James and nodded, giving an annoyed look. âWell thanks J, thatâs sweet,â he said dead-panned at the mention of how he looked. âYeah, colds are the worst. Youâre not sick enough to really stay home but youâre sick enough to feel gross,â Oliver rolled his eyes and then nodded. âI was actually just looking for some,â the blond admitted before he froze. âOf course, promise,â he laughed. The man sniffled and pulled his sweater closer. âHaving fun?â
James giggled and smiled warmly as she took her scarf off and draped it around Oliverâs neck, bundling him up further. âWell letâs just get the chill off your bones,â she started for the stand serving hot cocoa and cider. Her own boots gave hollow little thuds across the pavement as she walked. âI am actually, thanks, Iâve never been anywhere with seasons before. Kincaid lived in Cleveland but I only ever saw him in the summer, I never saw snow or anything like that. Does it snow here?â
{ Romeo }:
âYeah, Iâve been here since I was like, fourteen. Fifteen, maybe,â he shrugged lightly. âIâm from Italy. I stuck with my roots when I went to go serve, so I just enlisted with the Italian Armed Forces,â he clarified with a smile. âIâve seen a few familiar faces since I got here. Didnât expect to see any childhood friends, but I did and Iâll admit itâs nicer than starting over in a new town. Besides, I got to meet you, didnât I? Thatâs just as good.â
âMust be nice, everyone I knew is back in the States an ocean away but itâs nice to have a fresh start, a clean break,â she said nodding lightly before looking at Romeo truly touched by what he was saying. She put a hand to her chest and smiled warmly, âAw Rome,â she said reaching up and brushing his hair back affectionately. âMeeting youâs been awesome too, Iâm so glad we got to hang out and become friends. I donât have many here in Harpoole and Iâm honored to call you one of them.â
{ Ollie }:
Oliver loved Autumn, loved the festival and everything it brought with it. But he hated germs. And currently, he was a sniffling, miserable mess due to all the recent weather changes, along with being back teaching again, allowing his immune system to be assaulted. The mere task of breathing through his pink-chapped nose was exhausting, and if Ollie was being honest, quite irritating. Heâd only woken up four hours ago with the cold and yet it felt like a lifetime ago.
There was no way he was going to miss the annual Autumn Festival though, no way in hell. So heâd put on some clean, warm clothes, stuffed a few tissues in his pockets along with a travel-sized thing of hand sanitizer and made his way down to Main Street, walking idly along as he took everything in. He was currently in search of a good hot cider vendor, something warm and soothing for his raw throat. Sniffling again, he noted a familiar face and brightened up some, smiling. âHey!â
James was taste testing some small cakes from the bakery, enjoying the break from the heat and absorbing everything a season like autumn had to offer. She had grown up in Laguna Beach where summer was year long and had never really had an autumn and winter on the beach it never got very cold because she was so far south. She loved the idea of having seasons and a beach, she was curious to see if it snowed at Harpoole but hadnât had the guts to ask anyone yet.
She gave a start when she heard a chipper albeit stuffy voice greet her and she looked up to see Oliver. âOllie! You look awful,â she teased in a concerned manner as she instantly reached for his forehead. âAw man, first cold of the season? That sucks browski, want some cider? I saw a vendor just around the corner, they have cocoa too,â she offered smiling a bit before wincing playfully. âIf I hang out with you and get sick does that mean you play nurse and watch Disney movies with me all day?â
{ Romeo }:
He smiled softly at her remark, almost finding himself missing being called that. Of course he missed serving, but there was nothing quite like having a normal life where he could get out of bed every day and be proud to do so. Still, he couldnât help but feel a little nostalgic. Came with the label he supposed. The festival was a nice little start to his little life, and who better to spend a little of his time than with James. He wouldnât admit it, but their meeting was incredibly curious to say the least.
âItâs been a few years since Iâve been to the festival, so I guess Iâm a technical newbie.â He wasnât. âOh, thatâs fine. Iâd be more than happy to buy you a drink instead, to be honest.â
âOh well what kind of friend would I be if I didnât let you buy me at least one drink?â she asked smiling over her shoulder as she grabbed her wallet and draped her lanyard with her keys on it over her head. She walked back over to Romeo after ensuring her front door was locked then led him out the back and locked up that, too.
âWell I guess weâll figure out the festival together, I didnât know you lived here before. Did you leave to serve in Italy?â she asked curiously as she hopped down the steps and into the cool sand. It was a chilly autumn day but not so chilly she needed anything warmer than the jogging sweater she wore with her jeans. âHave you met anyone you knew before here?â

{ Romeo }:
âSomeone like that is good to have around,â he pointed out, probably unnecessarily. âNo need to apologise, just glad to see you donât actually hate me just yet,â he chuckled. Standing aside to let James go first, he haphazardly tucked his hands into his pockets, following her. Her last few words struck him oddly, and he wondered if it was by another context or something sheâd just said out of dry humourâ or maybe sheâd actually meant it. Either way, he disregarded it. âAny other plans this weekend?â
James laughed lightly and swung herself out of the hammock and slid on her sandals. She stood and tousled her hair absently, âNo I could never hate you, Capitaino,â she teased lightly as she tied up her hair. âLet my grab my wallet and we can head up to the festival and no, no real plans. This is my first year here in Harpoole, I donât know much about the festival so Iâm kinda just going to roam around and see whatâs what around this time. I moved in this summer so-â she shrugged and waved for Romeo to follow her inside. âYou want a water or anything? I can buy us a drink once we hit Main Street if you want.â
{ Romeo }:
âWell, thatâs certainly something I didnât expect,â he perked his brows in confusion. âSorry, I just came by to ask if you were coming to the festival, but I can see youâre busy.â
âOh Rome itâs you, sorry I thought you were my busy-body neighbor. Heâs always trying to get me out and about to mingle,â she held a hand up in pause and winced, âSorry I snapped, Iâve had a really long night. Work,â she explained before smiling. âLetâs try this again- ahem, Hey Rome whatâs up? Festival? Sure I could go,â James said in a happier tone once seeing it wasnât Isaac from next door. âMaybe I can meet âThe Oneâ,â she said mysteriously as she stood.Â
Of course by âthe oneâ she meant a roommate. Since moving to the small little bungalow James had been looking for the perfect person to share it with. She had a spare bedroom and a guest room currently being used for storage and she really liked the idea of reliving her college dorm days where she had a permanent best friend living with her. She just always neglected to think about how the term âthe oneâ came across to others.
