Conflict - Perspective lecture
This lecture was a very interesting look at conflict and it’s impact on artists work thoughtout the years. The lecturer did the talk in chronological order which helped to compare how we have changed in our view of war as society has changed with it.
For me I found that the surrealist imagery like ‘Dead Sea’ and Paul Nash’s work the most emotive and provicing. I feel that’s because war is something that to many cannot be comprehended and is something you cannot imagine without actually experiencing it. I feel like they’re also a lot more personal compared to photographs and more realistic pieces as it’s a real expression of how they felt.
Although I didn’t personal care for the photos created by Chloe Matthews in her ‘shot at dawn’, the concept was very interesting and is very bought provoking. I feel like with the stories behind it really give them a strong story and the dedication behind the work gives an amazing testimony to those who lost their lives.
Cyber space - Perspective lecture
In this lecture, Aly spoke about cyber space and its impact of our everyday life and how it’s portrayed in creative work.
I found it interesting in relation to the work that I’ve been doing at the moment and how different artists portray things differently between there work and how others borrow and use the same concepts.
Another thing that I found really interesting was when she showed images of how artist Ruslan Enikeev expressed what he felt cyber space looked like physically. The math and stratagy used to create the design including the closeness of circles expressing links between programs and the sizes of the circles showing internet traffic was a really interesting way to do it. You would think it would create a very mathematical look to it but it actually looked quite beautiful.
I found some of the none movie/TV pievesqiote shocking, especially the chat roulette piece and it really shows the danger and issues with cyberspace that fiction films don’t really get down to.
Wristband inspiration
After looking through a few different festival wristbands I made a few decisions about what I want from my own. One of those things was a design that is transferable to different colours, like the cochella ones below. I would have each ticket (V.I.P, standard etc) to have different colours to give a bit of variety but also to make it easier for staff to see who is who. As well as this I decided that i want one that had the bar code scanners/square bit of plastic as it’s practical to have a barecode or chip on the back of it to easily scan people in or out. I do want one that is more than just one colour, the multi-coloured ones are more in keeping with my festivals look.
Promo video I tested out this idea a few times with just the logo without the circle background and it was a little empty so I added the circle in and it worked really well. I am considering changing the logo a little but will decide after tests. As well as that I need to add an email at the end of the video but apart from that I’m really pleased with it and think it keeps the vibe of the festival with a bright and exciting logo but an uncomfortable/eerie theme to it

This is another idea that I had for an animation, and although its quite roughly done and I feel l doesnt look very professional yet it has a good idea and I think would look really nice on big screens above stages. I could lengthen the and have the shapes doing more things whilst bouncing round the screen, as well as the possibility of this being reversed.
This was my initial wordmark animation that I did really liked the idea of. I would like to make a more complex version of this which I have some ideas for however I don’t know how to go about them technically. I am going to attempt to learn how to however I may not be able to and thererfore it could just be an idea.
THE IDEA
My idea to make this look better and to have as a longer promo video is to start following an individual ‘wire’ (a line) in a 3d context. This would mean it coming onto the screen and following along a path, turning corners and exiting/entering the screen as if its following a complex trail. I would then exit and enter one time and then start spelling out the word as it has done in this animation, beginning with the T filling up most of the screen and zooming out so that you can see the whole word as it appears. It would then continue to zoom out as the screen fills up with wires (in the same way it is here just not spelling a word, just patterns with lots of corners and overlapping). To then have different coloured wires that roughly create the outline of the logo as the zoomed out screen fills with the lines, then as the logo is complete it would neaten up and become a clear, luminous version of the logo to then fade off and text with info on the festival appears.
LOGO CHOICES
This is the first set of designs that i went for based off of the hand drawn images I had created. I liked the ideas and the actual design itself however I was struggling to make it punch and to look professional. I tried multiple colour schemes and ideas but it didn’t seem to be working. I also had the text underneath it which after trying for a long time to simplify and change to make it fit I decided to separate. This is because I discovered that the designs needed a thicker line to give them an edge and it therefore made the type look thin and to detailed next to it. However, I wanted to keep both as the designs were working but went with one as the main logo and then the type as a workmark.
I created this piece in an attempt to see if something completely different worked better for me. however I felt it was quite complex and therefore not very transferable between different uses and also looked a little to rock for me. This then inspired the following partial 3D looking designs.
I did actually really these ones, they had a unique feel to them and looked quite professional in design. However, after much contemplation I decided to persevere with the original idea as it fit better with some animation ideas I had and I didn’t want to loose the Japanese symbol that they were originally designed off.
I pushed through looking at the different aspects that may make the logo look better. from thicker lines, to making it solely out of shapes it began to take place. Although I liked the separate shapes, it lost the symbol within the design and I feel I would have struggled translating it onto stickers, posters etc without loosing some of the punchy looks it has on its own.
After making the lines thicker and putting on the circles I really think it pulled the whole piece together and I was final happy with the design. It translated nicely into the mixed and single colours and also looked good inverted. It kept the original thought process as well as making it simpler and cleaner than the original designs.
Later on when doing other things like stickers and posters I removed the two corner triangles as i preferred how it looked when in different formats. (see below)
STICKERS
I decided that for a promo video idea I wanted to take loads of videos of the logo in different forms and places and one idea I had is to put stickers into derelict places. For that reason I’ve some sticker designing which I will use in the video but would also hypothetically be available for people to buy online and at the festival. When I began I really liked the first set with the logo that breaks out of the circle, and still do very much so however I think that I need to be looking for a better brush style that imitates a spray paint look more and work on making the lines gel together better so things don’t look to thick/thin. However as I started to work on the circle stickers with the logo inside and started using gradient to fill it iI began to get drawn towards them. I really like the flow of colour and how that makes it feel kind of like electricity flowing into one and other as well as adding a trippy feeling to them. I will be printing some out as tests to see how they work in a physical form before creating the final design. Although I like the triangles, for advertising reason I think its probably best to include the name somewhere, however i do like them and once I am branded and recognisable the type would no longer be an issue.
Line up posters
Starting to think about how to visually represent the line up, I began looking at existing festivals and the posters that they’ve used to represent it. I like this method as it’s an eye catching way to poster the line up online but also gives attendees the chance to buy some memorabilia at the festival to take home and put up.
One thing that I would really like from my design is to have some kind of illustrative feel to it, whether it’s an illustration of the stages on each individual line up or something else, I think it makes it more interesting and more collectible. The Glastonbury poster below is from 1982 and gives off some really nice aesthetics that fit in with my futuristic retro feel to it. I don’t plan to keep the mono tone colour but I will definitely use components of the contrasting shapes and symmetry.
Another thing I wanted to look into was how recorgnisable to posters are to their brand even if the name were to be removed. Festivals like reading have done this perfectly. Without even reading the name, the classing red and yellow colour scheme that has been an attachment to the core of their brand for many years. Even though it’s hard to solidify your brand on its first year of opening this is something to think about for the long run, including the colours and styles that can be transferable through the years.
There are also a few things that I really want to avoid, including finding fonts that are interesting by not over powering in bulk, as well as readability and something that’s interesting enough to catch a readers eye. Even though Cochella is a massive festival, I feel that their line up images do not meet the standard of what you would expect their festival to be. I think their very simplistic pieces that don’t work overly well. To me it feels very underwhelming with no illustration and a very back lay out. I am also not a big fan of their logo as it doesn’t really fit to the high-end feel of their festival.

Program landyard (and competitors research)
As well as doing research on the computer, I decided to look through the programs/landyards of festivals that I’ve been to myself. This way its a lot easier for me to see how practical and readable they are in use.
NASS FESTIVAL
Nass is a small dnb and skate festival in the south west of the uk. that has a wekkend capacity f 15,000. It opened its gates for the first time in 2012 with headliners like Andy C and Dj Fresh, to later having headlines like Cypress Hill and Netsky. Tickets start from £115 for 4 days and £125 for 3.
Nass 2014/2015 programs were attacked to black lanyards that have the logo printed along it. One thing that I didn’t like instantly about the program was that it had no kind of casing, this resulted in the program getting a bit ruined over the weekend and it would have been nice to have something to protect it. I also felt that the front of it and the over all design was a little bit boring and they could have used elements of the handlebars/headphones/skateboards in their designs to make it a little more exciting. However, the layout of the whole thing was clean and coordinated that made it easy to navigate without confusion. I didn’t like the separate pages as I know from experience how easy it is to have one fall off. The map did look nice and gave it an authentic however I dont think its particularly clear as there were 2 entrances, one to the festival and one to the stage and this does not show you how to get to the camping area from the main gate very well. Overall, I don’t think the program design is great but that may have been down to the relative newness of the festival where theyre still working things out,
LOVE SAVES THE DAY
LSTD is a 2 day, non-camp festival in Bristol featuring all types of dance and electric music for a daily capacity of 5000. With a 60s hippy vibe attached to the design and the festival, the festival is a has a fun, bright feel to it. Tickets cost £35-£49 a day depending on the sale tier.
What stood out to me about the LSTD lanyard was its bight colour against the other festivals I’d gone to which were all black. This gave it an unique edge and fitted perfectly with the bubbl/happy feel of the branding. It also had a sleeve like the one that I always planned to use with my lanyard and it kept i nice over the wo days however not camping would have definitely helped when it comes to looking after it. When you open the program up is a single tier, double sided fold out piece. This works really well however would have more complications with a bigger festival like the one I’m planning; I could consider making in two tier so that I can fit all the information it without making the font size too small. The map is also clean and concise, making it really easy to navigate whilst simultaneously being aesthetically pleasing to look at. Even though its for a much smaller area, I think it would still work well with a larger festival. Overall, I don't have many faults with the look and layout, the design is consistent and unique and the layout works perfectly for a festival of its size.
BOOMTOWN
Boomtown is an all-inclusive music festival with theatrical themes and a storyline to follow. With a capacity of 60,000, that has grown by 20,000+ since its opening in 2009 and its move to Matterley Estate in Hampshire in 2011. With tickets starting at £198.50 for the 4 days.
The boomtown lanyard is again black with the logo which I find a little boring, the festival branding isn’t particularly colourful however they could have done something a bit more adventurous. The program itself id really stylish and in keeping with the branding, however again the inside is a little boring even though its very practical for the line up side. This has made me question how i will make the program interesting without making it too complicated or messy. The fold out pages that make up the map is a really sleek and innovative idea, its neatly laid out into uptown and downtown with clear labelling and districts obvious to find. This design is really smart for such a complicated space and that makes up for the lack of illustrative design. I would have liked them to possibly have a larger map option that is a bit more theatrical. Overall, I think the festival has grown in capacity rapidly over the last few years so they’ve done well to make a clear and practical design but have lost the the theatrical magic of the festival.
Festival program mock up I liked the idea of having an envelope and to decorate it as if it was old. However I think it’s a little impractical for program and maps as festival goers would have to fiddle around with it to remove it from their landyards. However I will consider it as something you can buy at stalls during the festival either with exclusive story content or an artistic map
Fold out idea 1 Out of the mock ups that I have done so far this is my favourite, I like how much information it has the ability to retain yet how compact it is. It would ideally slot into a small plastic pouch attached to a land yard which festival goers can hang from their necks. This item would be included in the fully upgraded £25 extra ticket.
Typeface
Automate
Base Mono
Handel Gothic
KontikijF
Mashine
OCR A
Platelet
Temple Gothic
Ocena
I’m a fan of the more electronic style typefaces (OCR A and Mashine) however I do worry that there a little bit too thin. My favourite out of the thicker fonts is Ocena, the extended width of the letters the lowered middle lines gives it a unique feel to an otherwise quite normal typeface. As well as this the ‘A’s arent as slanted as a lot of the other text and the straight stoke gives the whole word more of an even feel to and allows spacing to be a lot easier. On the other hand if I am not going with one of the electronic fonts then I am drawn towards Handel Gothic for its very brand-able ‘E’ as well as the perfectly matching thickness to the logo but the issue with the extremely slanted ‘A’s could become an issue later in designing.
Going further with the logo designs, I picked my two favourite styles and went forward with different versions on the two.
One of the first things I looked at was the colour scheme. For my inspiration I have looked at cyberpunk/electronic and dystopian style themes and his is the same for the logo colours. I decided to go with the neon blue and pink as they’re both used throughout cyberpunk imagery, the strong contrast between the two made me pick them out specifically. I also felt as though the solid black was a little too much for the piece it made it very difficult to match with the tones on the pink and blue aswell as finding a background colour that wasn't washed out whiles simultaneously not being too bright that it takes away from the logo colours. I’m unsure on the background colours and will probably use more than one throughout my platforms, however I do plan to use the same kind of tone as the deep green/grey as it amplified the neon and still keeps the dystopian feel alive. I plan to test these out with more blue or pink undertones in them.
I had spent a lot of time trying to perfect the text so that its not lost against the thick logo, from trying to remove the lines and just have the logo as a shape (which I didn’t like as much as having the strong lines which could also benefit when animating) to simplifying the design so the stroke can be thickened. However, I have really struggled to get this correct and I am therefore going to look at typeface options and use the text I have created separately for the wordmark for the festival.

Logo inspiration (mostly the design republic)
Before starting my logo designs I created this moodboard to give me a bit of inspiration for my planning. I looked a lot at The Design Republic and what would have been a very futuristic feel to their time, which is exactly what I’m looking for. Their use of strong, simple shapes to create an effective yet captivating logo that is also easy to remember and leaves a lasting impression. The bottom left and right symbol are the ones that I was most drawn too, and I want to try and create a few triangles based on my initial sketches in a similar style to this by separating each shape out into different sections; this would make it easier to have the shapes move around and slot together as I originally planned. I want to create something that also looks like it could belong to a high end technical company to reinforce the idea of this hierarchy and this idea of someone watching over them with the logo symbol being plastered all over the festival in different forms (spray-paints, stickers, on animated boards etc)
‘Tektu presents’ dance music and youth events
Tektu are a events company that run deephouse, techno, disco and other dance and electronic music events. I love the graphics that they use and how they used vector style imagery to create busy but clean looking images that draw its Target audience in. I want to have this kind of repeated imagery in my style, using subject matters that are a little more underground and dystopian looking like different broken electric bits and wire inspired patters but I will keep there style in mind when doing so. I particularly like the colour scheme of the Tekfest and how it stands out on darker backgrounds, which is what I’m planning to do for my festival as a way to amplify the neon and brightness of the colours. Aswell as this the repetitive pattern of the money is something I’d like to try with my logo when I have it complete as it has an old style feel to it yet I think with the subject matter is a way of bringing that into a futuristic feel; the contrast pushes forward the low-life/high-tech theme I am going for.
