---
The first week in Greece had been absolutely amazing. After having spent the first three days in Mykonos, they took a ferry to Naxos and spent two days there. Azziâs camera roll was filled with pictures of white square houses, blue glittering ocean and a bright blue sky in every background, with an occasional blonde in the frame, usually completely unaware she was being captured.Â
It was easy to go back to their dynamic before they had broken up, and Paige thought to herself that they were even closer now than before. They were always in each otherâs proximity. It could be a hand on oneâs thigh when they were sitting by a table or their pinkies interlacing when they were walking through the streets of Greece.Â
There was always a small reminder that the other one was right there. Like they knew how it felt to lose one another, so they made sure to be grateful for every moment spent together, expressing it in physical touch.Â
After Naxos, they had taken the ferry to Santorini and checked into a hotel once again right by the beach.Â
Their balcony was overlooking the deep blue ocean and the horizon was their entertainment each night. They always spent at least an hour out on the balcony, admiring how the sun would dip into the ocean and create an orange cover over the peaceful sleepy water.Â
On this particular night, they had gotten take out dinner and ate out on their balcony just to catch the whole sunset.Â
Paige was chewing on some fries while Azzi was eating some chicken with parmesan. She looked at the younger one and reminisced on their time together. She thought back on their first kiss in the kitchen.Â
âOh, itâs kinda cold,â Azzi started to shudder and rubbed her own arms.Â
Paige took off her hoodie and tossed it to her. âHere.â
âThanks.â
âHey, you remember our first kiss?â Paige asked her.Â
âVividly,â Azzi nodded.Â
âI had no idea you even liked me like that before that kiss,â Paige mused out loud.Â
âWell, I was in a relationship so I would hope so,â Azzi awkwardly chuckled.Â
âBut you did like me?â Paige asked.Â
Azzi gave her a pointed look.Â
âAs a person, yes. Even though you were insufferable,â Azzi teased.Â
Paige hummed for a second, thinking about their beginning.Â
âHave you ever cheated before?â Paige suddenly asked.Â
Azzi looked at Paige with a neutral face. She didnât feel judged by the question, as she decided to take it as open curiosity rather than an assumption. She swallowed the food in her mouth before she answered.Â
âNo. Iâve always had very strong hatred for cheaters,â Azzi told her. âMy mom cheated on my dad. Thatâs why she left.â
Paige was about to put some more fries in her mouth but stopped midmotion.Â
âAnd thatâs why he kicked me out,â Azzi added before returning her attention to her food again.Â
âI didnât know that,â Paige said quietly and searched for any emotions in Azziâs eyes. But Azzi was sometimes hard to read.Â
âShe had found another family to join,â Azzi said. âAnd I thought to myself that cheaters were scum of the earth.â
Paige took a sip from her drink and listened without interrupting.Â
âBut I guess the apple doesnât fall far from the tree,â Azzi sighed.Â
âI donât necessarily think the cheating was your momâs biggest crime,â Paige spoke carefully, making Azzi turn her head to look at her curiously. âLeaving you for another family was. And youâve done nothing like that, Azzi.â
Azzi pursed her lips together and looked down on the table for a second. Her eyes were still hard to read, but Paige could hint a glint of restraint in them - she was holding something back.
âAzzi, you havenât,â Paige insisted, and it cracked something open in Azzi.Â
She closed her eyes with a long exhale and slowly shook her head.Â
âYou know, sometimes I really think dad was right - Iâm just like my mom,â she quickly let her hand wipe away the tears that were starting to fall.Â
Paige moved her chair closer to Azzi and instantly put her arm around her.Â
âAzzi, you didnât leave him, he kicked you out,â Paige tried to tell her.Â
âAnd he had every reason to,â Azzi sniffled.Â
âStop that,â Paige said firmly. âThatâs not true. Youâve taken care of him for years. You stayed when you didnât have to, and you shouldnât feel guilty for choosing yourself for once. He didnât exactly make it easy for you.â
âStill, I justâŚâ Azzi sighed deeply. âIâm so fucking grateful for you, but thereâs nothing I regret more than the fact that I did exactly what I hated my mom for doing.â
âItâs not the same,â Paige chimed in.Â
âDoesnât matter,â Azzi said. âI still cheated. Like her.â
âAzzi, youâre not her,â Paige cut in. âYou did that one thing the same as her, but thatâs it. You didnât abandon your whole family in the process. You have a conscience, Azzi. You regret it and you want to make things right. Thatâs what sets you apart from your mom.â
Azzi took a deep breath as Paigeâs words sank in. It was endearing, the way Paige stood up for Azziâs morality and believed in it more than herself.Â
âBetween you and me, we both carry so much guilt,â Azzi eventually said with a heavy sigh. âDo you ever think about that?â
It was Paigeâs turn to purse her lips together.Â
She had thought about her guilt, but she hadnât thought about it as something both of them were struggling with in their relationship.Â
So she slowly shook her head.Â
âI was so consumed by wanting you, that the guilt became suppressed by my longing,â Azzi continued. âAnd then it hit me like a punch to the gut. I would really get it if youâre hesitant on trusting me.â
Paige let out a breathy scoff in disbelief.Â
âOkay, but it doesnât change the fact that I do,â Paige stated.Â
Azzi blinked. Paige didnât even think twice before disregarding her understanding and just completely shattering her insecurities. All in one breath.Â
âYou talk before you think,â Azzi chuckled.Â
âI donât need to think when it comes to my feelings,â Paige shrugged. âI know what I feel, and I feel trust.â
Azzi swallowed at her words.Â
âThe hardest part of guilt is to forgive yourself,â Paige spoke up again. âI know I feel like I canât do that yet, even though Josh has forgiven me. Guilt is my own punishment from my morality. Maybe itâs just something that leaves with time, or maybe itâs something I feel like I have to earn back by making amends. But I donât want it to hold me back forever. That I know for sure.â
âI feel like I donât have the right to forgive myself,â Azzi said quietly. âLike this is just something within me that defines my character from now on. And it scares me.â
âI get what you mean, butâŚâ Paige took a second to think. âI donât think loyalty is inherently a trait within us. I think itâs something you practice, something you give, more than something you are. A decision.â
Azzi gave a quick hum of interest and leaned back in her chair, the cogs in her head turning almost visibly.Â
âIâm just scared of how others will perceive me,â Azzi said. âI feel like I could be the most loyal person in the world, but at the end of the day, Iâm still a cheater.â
Paige nodded. Not because she agreed, but because she understood.Â
âThatâs just your perception of others' perception of you,â Paige said. âAnd you donât get to decide what other people think of you. Thatâs actually none of your business.â
Azzi scoffed, her lips slightly curving into an amused smile. She tilted her head to the side and looked at the blonde one.Â
âYou say things like itâs easy,â Azzi stated.Â
âI say things that are true,â Paige countered. âHow about this? I get to know your guilt, and you get to know mine, and we take care of our guilt together, until itâs grown enough to leave the nest.â
Azzi let out a soft laugh at that.Â
âYou tryna raise guilt with me, Paige Bueckers?â Azzi asked with a big grin.Â
âAmongst other things, yeah,â Paige nodded and brushed her nose against Azziâs cheek.Â
âYouâre unbelievable,â Azzi exhaled and shook her head.Â
âI know.â
The sun was almost completely below the horizon now, leaving only a small slim ray of orange reflecting on the water.Â
The two women watched the moving art side by side. Even if it was cold and even if a heavy guilt was weighing down on them, there was nowhere else they would wanna be in that moment, than right there.Â
â---
It had almost become a routine for Paige to wake up earlier than Azzi, buy them breakfast and then wake Azzi up with loving kisses all over.Â
But this particular morning, Paige didnât just buy them breakfast.Â
âAnd this pendant is a David Yurman in sterling silver,â the woman behind the desk told her and pointed at a shimmering A in silver inside the glass case.
âI like that one,â Paige mused out loud. âDo you have a P as well?â
The saleswoman nodded. âYes, we have all the letters, A to Z.â
âAlright, Iâll take an A and a P, please,â she decided and smiled just from the thought of giving it to Azzi.Â
After leaving the jewelry store, Paige took a short cab ride up the west coast of Santorini and got out near a street she had marked on the map. She had a specific store in mind, and she walked the rest of the way when she had been dropped off.Â
Since she knew what she was looking for, it was a quick in and out of the boutique.Â
When she got back to the hotel, Azzi was up and awake in the living room. Paigeâs little trip had taken longer than she had thought, and she quickly hid her small shopping bags somewhere Azzi wouldnât see.Â
âHey, I was just wondering where you were,â Azzi walked up and embraced her.Â
âMissed my morning kisses?â Paige wriggled her eyebrows.
âMhm,â Azzi hummed into her chest. âYou wanna go have a morning swim with me? They have an infinity pool.â
âWhatâs up with you and infinity pools?â Paige laughed.Â
âI just like them. And this oneâs for adults onlyâŚâ Azzi said as her voice drifted off.Â
âAlright, Iâll come with you. But not for too long, remember we were gonna rent a boat today? And then have a fancy dinner tonight?â
âYes, I remember,â Azzi chuckled. âDonât worry. Now go change.â
Azzi pushed Paige away and into the bathroom while she went to the bedroom to get changed.Â
The pool was somewhat secluded. The edge of the pool was facing the ocean, creating a neverending illusion of water while it almost blended into the sky. It was blue everywhere.Â
There were a couple of people in the pool already, swimming laps back and forth with determination. And while Azzi had asked Paige if sheâd wanted to swim, she had no real intentions on actually swimming.Â
âShit,â Paige drew in a sharp breath as she lowered her body into the somewhat cold water.Â
Azzi slid in seamlessly and dipped her head under the water for a moment before surfacing again, slicking her hair back. Feeling cold water on her face always felt refreshing.Â
âLetâs go to the edge,â Azzi suggested and swam across the pool.Â
Paige followed and felt a flicker of unease as she stopped by the large pane of glass - the only thing holding the water in. There was no real edge to the pool, and it felt like she would fall out if someone would just shove her hard enough.
And as if her thoughts had been voiced out loud, Azzi crowded her from behind and trapped her between her arms, her whole body pressing into her back and towards the very glass she was hesitant to touch.Â
âIf this glass breaks, Iâm gonna kill you,â Paige mumbled.
âBut look at the view though,â Azzi just said and rested her chin on her shoulder, wrapping her arms around Paigeâs abdomen.Â
Paige hesitantly put her hands on the edge of the glass to hold onto something.
Looking out over the ocean like this, with a warm breeze that gave her goosebumps and the woman she loved around her body - it was perfect.Â
The water almost reached their collarbones as they stood and admired the view.Â
Paige was just about to say something, when she felt Azziâs hand on her abdomen travel lower down under the hem of her swim trunks.Â
âAzzi,â she whispered out, almost worried. âThere are people here.â
âIâm just hugging you from behind,â Azzi whispered back and placed a wet kiss on the top of her shoulder. âThey canât see whatâs going on in the front.â
âThe people on the other side of this glass can,â Paige said, and let out a short hiss when Azziâs fingers traveled down further.Â
âThereâs only the ocean there, babe,â Azzi murmured against her neck. âRelax.â
Paigeâs eyes fluttered closed the moment Azziâs fingers slid through her slick folds. Her head fell backwards as Azzi started to massage her clit softly.Â
âNah-uh,â Azzi said softly. âDonât show how good it feels.â
Paigeâs hips slightly jerked under the water when Azzi pressed on her clit harder, but obediently lifted her head back up.Â
âCanât look too fucked out, okay?â Azzi whispered in her ear.Â
Paige didnât say anything back, she was too focused on not staying still and being somewhat quiet.Â
âAnswer me when I talk to you, baby,â Azzi said in a soft, yet commanding voice.
âSorry,â Paige mumbled. Her chest was heaving. Azziâs fingers felt too good.Â
The few people in the pool were still swimming laps behind them. Since Paige and Azzi were standing on the long side of the pool, the swimmers never swam towards or away from them, but rather passed them a couple feet behind them. If they only looked forward, Paige and Azzi would simply only exist in their periphery.Â
âYou want me to fuck you?â Azzi asked with a sultry voice, and Paigeâs knees buckled desperately at the words.Â
âAzzi,â she quietly whined.Â
âAnswer me,â Azzi kissed her cheek softly, and from behind, it just looked like a sweet moment between the two. But on the other side of the glass, you would see the mischievous grin on Azziâs face and the completely wrecked one on Paigeâs.Â
âPlease,â Paige exhaled. âPlease fuck me.â
Her legs were shaking under the water from having to stand up, and she subtly leaned back on Azzi for support.Â
âMhm, thatâs what I like to hear,â Azzi praised her and moved her fingers down to Paigeâs entrance.Â
âIâm gonna fuck you slowly,â Azzi whispered. âAnd youâre gonna take it just like that. Because I canât move my arm too much, okay?â
Paige nodded.Â
The water around them was still except the occasional ripples from the swimmers motions.Â
Azzi smirked to herself when she saw the way Paige was biting her bottom lip with her eyebrows knitted together in concentration. Her eyes were shut tightly and her grip on the glass edge was making her knuckles go white.Â
And in an agonizingly slow manner, Azzi slid her ring and middle finger inside of her.Â
Paigeâs lips parted, like she was silently screaming. She wanted to do nothing more than to throw her head back onto Azziâs shoulder - but she knew better.Â
Azziâs long and slender fingers slid in and out of Paigeâs wet hole, curling them while she bent her wrist in a controlled motion.Â
âYouâre so fucking wet,â Azzi rasped. âYouâre gonna make a mess in this pool when you come, arenât you?â
Paige let out a breath of arousal. It took everything in her to not let out a shamelessly loud moan. The way Azzi was talking to her made her go weak in the knees, and it felt like she could just collapse right there and disappear under the surface.Â
âI said, arenât you?â Azzi muttered impatiently.Â
âYes,â Paige whimpered breathlessly.
âSuch a filthy fucking slut,â Azzi growled quietly, with a tone that sounded more like a praise than an insult. âGetting fucked right in front of them, huh? You like that?â
Azziâs fingers never sped up. They kept their torturously slow pace, making Paige feel every inch of Azziâs fingers go in and out of her repeatedly. But it didnât stop her from losing her mind.Â
Paige could only give a small nod. She was not in the right headspace to verbally answer any more questions. All her senses were consumed by the growing pleasure in her lower stomach.Â
Azzi had to hold her tighter against her as she felt Paigeâs body become more and more limp.Â
âJust imagine if someone was watching us from a boat out on the ocean,â Azzi whispered, her voice dripping with lust. âThey would see me fucking you shamelessly, and you, barely holding it together. Bet youâd love that.â
A strangled, pathetic, little moan escaped Paigeâs lips, and Azzi bit her lip, holding back a moan herself.Â
âI need more,â Paige whispered out breathlessly as she started to rock herself against Azziâs fingers, causing the water to stir around them.Â
âStop fucking moving,â Azzi stilled her fingers immediately.Â
Paige jerked her upper body forward against the glass, just to get the frustration out in some way. She wanted to scream, she wanted to collapse - but most of all, she wanted to come.Â
âYouâre gonna take what I give you,â Azzi gritted her teeth. âAnd youâre gonna thank me for it.â
She pulled Paigeâs upper body back into herself so it still looked like they were simply in a loving embrace, and proceeded to start moving her fingers inside of Paige. Her chin was resting on her shoulder, still looking out over the amazing view in front of them.
Paige on the other hand could barely hold her eyes open. They kept fluttering shut every time Azzi hit that spongy spot inside of her.Â
âSay thank you, Paige,â Azzi murmured low, her voice full of control.Â
âThank you,â Paige breathed out quietly and swallowed hard. She was completely at Azziâs mercy.
âMhm, and thank me for what?â Azzi pressed.Â
Paigeâs eyes rolled to the back of her head.Â
âThank you for fucking me,â she drawled, letting the words slip out with a breath.
âGood girl,â Azzi purred, satisfied with her answer.Â
As a reward, she moved her wrist a little faster, hitting Paigeâs g-spot over and over below the surface.Â
âOh God,â Paige whimpered out helplessly. âPlease donât stop.â
Azzi placed her lips on Paigeâs exposed shoulder and let them travel up to her neck.Â
âBe quiet baby,â Azzi murmured against her skin.Â
Paigeâs legs were about to give in. She could feel it. So she grabbed Azzi by her arms, holding on for dear life as her hips were starting to jerk in the water as her muscles were tensing up.Â
âMmm, I love when you come undone on my fingers,â Azzi mumbled. âYouâve been so good for me.â
Paige was digging her nails into Azziâs skin, probably breathing more heavily than the swimmers behind her. Her core convulsed in the most satisfactory way she knew, and her legs jerked back, making her ass rub up against Azziâs pelvis.Â
Azzi kept moving her fingers in and out of her - she loved when Paigeâs walls were clenching around her fingers so hard as if her pussy was trying to crush them.Â
âFuck, youâre so tight,â Azzi softly groaned into her ear, as she slowed down her fingers.
âI canât take any more,â Paige pleaded and instinctively shoved Azziâs fingers out of her.Â
Azzi brought her fingers up to her mouth discreetly, and sucked them clean in one swift motion.Â
They tasted like Paige and chlorine.Â
âYou did so good for me,â Azzi cooed in Paigeâs ear and nestled her face into the crook of her neck, returning to simply just hugging her from behind.Â
âYouâre insane,â Paige said breathlessly with a lazy smile.Â
She turned around and wrapped her arms around Azziâs shoulders and lifted her legs off the ground. She was tired in every limb, but the water helped her move, and she clung onto Azzi like a koala.Â
âClingy baby,â Azzi said and held her up with her hands under Paigeâs legs.Â
Paige was faced towards the swimmers and immediately started blushing.Â
âI canât believe we did that,â she whispered and buried her face in the crook of Azziâs neck.Â
âYou wanna get up?â Azzi lightly chuckled.Â
Paige nodded into her neck.Â
âYouâre so gonna get back for that,â she murmured against Azziâs skin.Â
Azzi started to walk through the water to the other side of the pool, still carrying her girl.Â
âI look forward to that,â she smirked to herself.
â---
âSo you need to sign here and here,â the man showed Paige two papers and gave her a pen. âYouâll have the boat for eight hours, no alcohol is allowed on board but food and other soft drinks are fine. And you bring it back here when youâre done.â
âOkay, great,â Paige signed the papers after having skimmed the bullet points of rules. âThank you.â
It was one of those smaller boats you didnât need a license to drive. But it still had a lot of space for sun bathing on it. There was a long brown cushioned bench at the stern right behind the steering wheel. And in the bow of the boat, there was a large cushioned sun pad in the same color as the one in the back. It was the perfect space for some sunbathing.Â
And the best part of the boat - according to Paige - was the fact that it had a white canvas stretched over a steel frame in the middle of the boat, protecting the driver from the sun.
It was perfect, because Paige didnât like to just lay in the sun while Azzi loved it.Â
Paige boarded the boat with ease and offered her hand for Azzi to hold as she boarded behind her.Â
Azzi sat down next to Paige on the bench in the rear, watching Paige start the motor and steering them out the dock with precision, being careful not to hit any other nearby boats as she backed out.Â
The light blue button up T-shirt highlighted Paigeâs blue eyes, and her beige khaki shorts that stopped right above her knees - the whole outfit made Azzi bite her lip. Paigeâs hair was up in a low bun, just the way Azzi loved. And her long fingers were wrapped around the steering wheel while one of her arms was stretched out behind Azziâs back while she started to accelerate away from the shore.Â
And the way the wind was making her blonde loose strands fly everywhere? It shouldnât be possible to look so hot just by driving a boat, but Paige did.Â
Azzi looked her up and down and felt a heat inside her core. She just wanted to take her again and again.Â
âHow about we stop right here?â Paige slowed down the boat as they had come a good distance away from the shore.Â
It felt like they were in the middle of the ocean, with the way they were alone on the water with just a couple of scattered islands further away.Â
âHereâs good,â Azzi nodded and took off her clothes, revealing her bikini.Â
Paige fully stopped the boat and set the anchor. She watched Azzi go to the front with a book in her hand and comfortably laid down on her back on the sun pad - the sun already glaring on her skin.Â
Paige grabbed her backpack and started to dig through it. She had brought her own book and a small speaker.Â
She put on some music to have in the background and laid down at the bench in the rear - wanting to be in the shadow. The wind was calm, and Paige appreciated the fact that it kept her skin cool under the canopy as it moved over them.Â
Paige had been too engulfed in her book for at least forty minutes to notice that Azzi had completely taken off her bikini by now. She was lying on her stomach, propped up on her elbows, holding a book in front of her, with her knees bent and ankles crossed in the air.Â
Her bikini was too small to really see that it was missing when she was laying on her stomach, concealing her breasts.Â
But the moment she rolled over to her back again, it was hard to miss her bare tits in the air.Â
Paige saw something move in her periphery and turned her head Azziâs way for just a second, before instantly snapping her head back, doing a double take.Â
âOh my God,â she muttered to herself, her pulse spiking through the roof at the sight of the naked woman in the front.Â
Azzi had been a fucking menace the whole day, her behaviour shouldnât be a surprise by now. Even so, nothing couldâve prepared Paige for the view she had in front of her.Â
Paige gulped.Â
Azzi was biting her lip, focusing on every word written in the book she held in her hands above her head, shielding her eyes from the sun. Her legs were pulled up comfortably, and she paid no attention to her girlfriend that was straight up staring at her now, practically drooling.Â
âA fucking problem is what she is,â Paige murmured low and sat up on the bench. She grabbed her backpack and dug through it once again, reaching for the very thing she had bought earlier in the morning.
Azzi heard a low clanging sound from the back of the boat but didnât bother checking what Paige was doing. She was too invested in her book.Â
But when she saw Paige approaching her in her periphery, she lowered her book and turned her head.Â
Her jaw hit the floor, and her heart stopped for a second.Â
Paige didnât wait for her to recover from the shock. She just walked up to her with a confident smirk and put her hand on the back of Azziâs head, pulling her face towards the head of the strap with no hesitation.Â
Azzi scrambled up to sit on her knees, Paigeâs dick already in her mouth.Â
âSomeone needs to fucking teach you manners,â Paige growled and bucked her hips forward, her dick hitting Azzi in the back of her throat for a split second before she pulled it out completely. Her shorts were off, but she kept her button up shirt on.Â
âYouâve been such a fucking menace the whole day,â Paige put of her hands on each side of Azziâs head, wrapping her fingers around her soft curls and positioned the strap on her lips once again. âOpen up, princess.â
Azzi put her hands on Paigeâs bare thighs and looked up at her with a doe-eyed stare, her big brown eyes boring into Paigeâs while she slowly opened her mouth.Â
Paige could feel her knees buckle at the sigh below her and she swallowed down a moan in her throat.Â
âSuck daddy off,â Paige ordered with authority and entered her mouth.Â
Azzi hummed with her mouth full and slowly moved her head forward and then back again, her cheeks hollow as she sucked it on her way back.Â
Paige let out a shaky exhale as Azzi was bobbing her head up and down the shaft, her eyes never leaving Paigeâs.Â
âFuck,â a desperate whimper escaped Paigeâs lips and she wondered who was really in control here.Â
Azzi pushed her head back against Paigeâs hands and gasped for air the same second Paigeâs dick left her mouth. It was completely slick in her spit now.Â
âStand up,â Paige said and backed away, giving Azzi space to do what she was told.Â
Azziâs eyes were already glassy and hazy, and Paige gently kissed her on the corner of her mouth. As she pulled back, Azzi followed and pressed her lips tenderly against Paigeâs.Â
âIâm gonna do what you did to me,â Paige murmured against her lips and took a step back. âYouâre gonna stand still, right here, while I do whatever I want with you.â
Azziâs body shuddered from the words, failing to stay still already. But the words were music to her ear, and she couldnât wait for Paige to start touching her.Â
âSay that you want it,â Paige said, standing a foot away from her, staring her down.Â
Azzi nodded eagerly. âI want it,â she said.Â
Paigeâs face broke into a sly smile and a slow nod. âNow look whoâs being a good girl.â
âYou and me both then,â Azzi cocked her head to the side innocently.
Paige grabbed her jaw in a tight grip, making Azziâs plump lips pout.Â
âDo not fucking test me right now,â Paige growled through gritted teeth, her nose touching Azziâs. âIâm gonna fuck that brat right out of you, I swear to God.â
She pushed Azziâs face to the side as she let her jaw go with a gentle shove of her fingers.Â
âDonât move,â Paige said low and positioned herself right behind Azzi. The tip of the strap was poking Azziâs protruding ass, and it drove her crazy.Â
She put her hands on Azziâs waist and let them move down over her hipbones. She caressed her ass, giving her right cheek a soft squeeze before slapping her hard.
âMmm- ungh!â Azziâs hips jerked forward involuntarily.Â
âI said, donât move,â Paige repeated. She moved closer to Azzi, pushing her body against hers.Â
Paige wrapped her arms around Azzi the same as Azzi had done to her in the pool. But instead of moving her hands down, she moved them up to Azziâs tits and massaged them in her hands.Â
Azziâs chest was heaving, and she leaned back on Paigeâs torso, wanting to do nothing more than to put her hands on Paigeâs body but knew she couldnât.Â
âNah, stand up,â Paige pinched her nipples and took a step back again, forcing Azzi to support herself again.Â
Paige took a step to the side and looked at Azziâs profile. Azzi kept looking forward, her eyes involuntarily glancing to her right side where Paige was standing.Â
The strap was poking her right hip, and the slick on the tip of her own spit made her eyes flutter close.Â
Paige saw the way Azzi was enjoying herself even if she wasnât even touching her yet, and smirked to herself.Â
Paige reached her right hand forward straight to Azziâs center and gently cupped her pussy. Azzi drew in a sharp breath and let her head fall backwards. She was warm and wet, and Paigeâs fingers were getting sticky.
âStand still,â Paige reminded her.
And without warning, Paige smacked her palm against her pussy, to then remove it completely.
âHmph- God!â Azzi gasped loudly. Her muscles were tense from trying not to move an inch.Â
Paige was impressed. She hadnât flinched.Â
âYou like that, baby?â Paige murmured.Â
Azzi was panting.Â
âYeah,â she could only exhale.Â
âYou want more?â Paige asked her, cupping Azziâs achingly wet pussy once more.Â
Azzi nodded eagerly.Â
âYou think you deserve that?â Paige pressed.
âMhm,â Azzi hummed. âPlease.â
âThatâs right baby, say please for me,â Paige purred, her lips brushing against the shell of Azziâs ear.Â
âPlease, plea- oh, fuck!â
She didnât even get the chance to say it more than once before Paige quickly struck her wet folds once more.Â
This time, Azzi couldnât control it. Her hips jerked forward from the impact and her hand flew to grip Paigeâs waist for support. The pain and the pleasure crashed through her in wave after wave.
She didnât know if it hurt more or just felt extremely good - her pussy throbbed either way.Â
âI told you to stand still,â Paige growled in her ear and shoved off her hand. âFucking brat.â
Paige grabbed Azziâs waist and guided her towards the side of the boat. Azzi was facing the water and had to hold onto the railing as Paige seemed to push her towards the edge.Â
âBend over,â Paige husked and pushed her upper body down with one hand, while the other one was resting on Azziâs lower back.Â
Azzi whimpered as she stood with her legs spread in front of Paige.
âYouâre dripping,â Paige murmured when she saw Azziâs wetness drip down her inner thighs.Â
And God, could Paige blame her?Â
Her whole core was already pulsating in anticipation. Her thighs were quivering, her breath ragged and her face already fucked out.Â
âJust fuck me already,â Azzi whined.Â
Paige teased her folds with the tip of her dick. She was stroking it softly up and down over Azziâs swollen clit and over her entrance. But she didnât give in.Â
âI will when you stop being a brat,â Paige rasped.Â
âPaige,â Azzi howled, dissatisfied.Â
âTell me youâll be a good girl, and act like it,â Paige snarled.Â
Azzi wanted to moan just from Paigeâs stern voice. But she wasnât done pushing Paigeâs buttons.Â
âWhat happened with fucking the brat out of me, huh? Worried youâre not gonna be able to do it?âÂ
Azzi thought Paige was definitely gonna slam the strap into her with those words.Â
But boy, was she wrong.Â
Instead, Paige took two steps back, removing all physical touch from Azziâs skin.Â
âWha-â
âNah, you stay there,â Paige ordered, and sat down on the edge of the sun pad. âYouâre gonna stay bent over just like that while I get myself off. And you donât get to touch.â
Azzi let out a pathetic whimper. Her knees buckled and she regretted everything. She could only turn her head to the side and look at how her woman took off the harness and comfortably laid down on the cushions - her wet pussy on full display for Azzi to see.Â
Paige looked right at her, while she let her hand move down to her center.Â
âPaige,â Azzi pleaded.Â
But Paige just shook her head. Azzi had had her chances.Â
She moved the pad of her fingers over her slick clit in slow circles, letting a soft moan escape her lips in the process.Â
âOh fuck,â she exhaled. She let her mouth hang open in pleasure, and her gaze on Azzi never wavered.Â
Azzi swallowed. Her plan had backfired.Â
Her wetness slid further down on the inside of her thighs, and she let out a desperate groan of frustration.Â
âPaige, please,â she begged. âPlease, I wanna touch you.â
Paige just scoffed. âShouldâve thought about that before you talked back. Oh God.â
Paigeâs head flew back on the cushions and her eyes fluttered closed.Â
âIâm sorry,â Azzi whined. âIâm sorry, Iâll be good. I swear.â
Paige bit her bottom lip with a victorious smirk playing on the curve of her mouth.Â
âWhat was that? I didnât hear you,â Paige was punishing Azzi in a way that had turned from fun to just frustrating for Azzi.Â
Azzi cursed to herself under her breath. She watched Paigeâs glistening pussy and her fingers lazily do the job. God, she wanted to taste her.Â
âI said,â Azzi said with a long exhale. âIâll be a good girl. Your good girl.â
Paige stopped her fingers and looked at Azzi, an impish smile tugging on her lips.Â
âHmm,â Paige hummed, finally satisfied. She got up from the cushions and put on the harness again.Â
Azziâs heartbeat thundered in her chest. She couldnât wait to be rewarded.Â
Paige unbuttoned her blue shirt and let the fabric fly with the wind, exposing her bare breasts underneath. She positioned herself behind Azzi, and Azzi hummed in contentment when one of Paigeâs hands grabbed her hip.
âGod, yes,â Azzi breathed out, finally feeling the tip of the strap by her soaking entrance again.Â
But of course, Paige didnât push it in just yet.Â
Azzi groaned the second she realized Paige wasnât just gonna give it to her.Â
âPlease!â she cried out. âPlease daddy, please, I need it!â
Paige let out a low laugh and slid in the tip. She pushed the whole length into Azzi slowly, earning a pathetically loud moan just from one single stroke.Â
âSee? This is what good girls get,â Paige murmured as she started to pick up her pace of penetrating in and out of Azzi. âYou still wanna talk back to me?â
âN- no,â Azzi choked out. âGod, no.â
Azziâs whole body was being pounded against the railing, and she felt her legs lose their strength with every hit. She was sure she would collapse if Paige didnât hold onto her hips, pulling her back onto her dick.Â
There was something so deeply erotic about the whole setting. Azzi, bent over against the railing on a boat in the middle of the southern Aegean sea, being pounded from behind, making her body thrash back and forth.Â
The strap was longer than the one Paige had used on her at home, and Azzi loved the way it was hitting that spot inside her walls every time Paige pushed it in.Â
And Paige was thrusting into her with full force now. Skin slapping on skin, with Azziâs loud moans escaping her lips in rhythm with every clap.Â
âGod, look at you,â Paige groaned like she was the one being fucked. âFuck, you feel so good on my dick.â
Azzi felt it building in her core. She felt the waves come closer and closer. The sensation traveled through her whole body, making her throat tighten from pleasure.Â
She let out a sob of bliss and pure exhaustion as her legs were starting to give in.Â
âI canât-â Azziâs knees buckled, but Paige caught her. She wrapped her arms around her hips just in time, and helped holding her up.Â
âYou can,â Paige growled and kept fucking her. âYou were such a good girl just now, donât ruin it.â
Azziâs legs were shaking, and she used every last drop of strength inside of her to stand on them while Paige fucked her.Â
âPaige!â she screamed out as the waves of pleasure hit her over and over again as Paigeâs dick kept hitting her g-spot.Â
And she couldnât help it anymore.Â
She collapsed onto the floor of the boat, and Paige quickly followed her down, trying to catch her.Â
âShit, baby,â Paige breathed out and helped her up on the sun pad. âCome here.â
Azzi panted out of exhaustion, her body laid out on the cushions with Paige sitting right beside her.Â
But even with trembling legs, she looked at Paige with her bottom lip between her teeth, pulled her legs in, and spread them.Â
âI want more,â she mumbled, almost bashfully.Â
A big amused smile spread across Paigeâs face, and she shook her head to herself in disbelief.Â
âOf course baby, anything you want,â Paige cooed and positioned herself between her legs.Â
Azziâs pussy clenched around Paigeâs dick as she eased into her.Â
âI want you close,â Azzi breathed out.Â
Paige lowered herself on top of Azzi and bumped noses, her upper body supported by her elbows.Â
âHi,â Paige smiled, her dick still inside of Azzi.Â
âHi,â Azzi swallowed, her eyes flicking between Paigeâs blue ones. Her pupils were dilated, and the blue irises were pushed out to the edge.Â
âYouâre so beautiful,â Paige stroked her nose against Azziâs affectionately.
Azzi wrapped her arms around Paige, hugging her tightly. Paige buried her face in the crook of Azziâs neck.Â
âYouâre the prettiest, P,â Azzi murmured.Â
Paige slowly started to roll her hips into Azzi. She heard every tremble in Azziâs inhales and every long exhale that was something between a whimper and a groan.Â
âJust like that,â Azzi moaned into her ear and threw her head back on the cushions.Â
Maybe it was the gentle rocking of the boat, stirred by the water's ripples, or maybe it was the way Paige was moving inside of her - but Azzi felt like her whole body was just floating in ecstasy.Â
Their skins were shimmering with sweat, and it didnât help that the sun was looking down on their naked bodies.Â
Paige heard a motorboat in the distance, but she didnât stop. She kept rolling her hips at a steady pace into her girlfriend.Â
Every nerve in Azzi was already sensitive and on alert. The stimuli from the strap felt like she was being touched everywhere all at once.Â
The pleasure was overwhelming, but Azzi still ached for release.Â
She always wanted more of Paige.Â
She needed it.Â
âGod, I love you so much,â Azzi whispered out between whimpers and dug her nails into Paigeâs back as her core was starting to tense up. Paige was working her to an irreversible feeling of pleasure.Â
âI love you more.â
And Azzi let out one last cry of pleasure over the ocean, as her whole body convulsed in pure bliss.Â
It was beautiful, really, making love out in the open like that.Â
Maybe it was because they had been loving in secret for such a long time that it felt extra meaningful.Â
Or maybe it was just because it was Paige. And it was Azzi. And it was them together.Â
Which, somehow, was always the most meaningful thing of all.
â-----
Paige pulled out the chair for Azzi to sit before taking her own seat across from her.Â
Azziâs white two piece set matched the clad chairs they were sitting on, and the skirt hugged her curves in the right places and her strapless top showed her tan line running over her shoulders.Â
And while Paige was admiring her view instead of looking through the menu, Azzi was actively trying to concentrate on the menu instead of peeking at the blonde woman who looked gorgeous tonight.Â
She was wearing dress pants, a button up shirt and a suit vest - all in white. It was the type of cream white that really complimented Paigeâs complexion and the golden accessories highlighted her blonde hair. Azzi had helped her do a half up half down kind of hairstyle with some strands framing her face in the front.Â
She was stunning.
It wasnât planned that they both were gonna wear white, it was just the fanciest both of them had brought.Â
Azzi couldnât help herself anymore. Her eyes snapped up over the menu and looked over at Paige, who was already looking at her.Â
Paige didnât smile. Her jaw flexed for a second, and Azzi saw her throat tense as she swallowed.Â
âAre you nervous?â Azzi asked softly and put down her menu completely.Â
âA little. I donât know why though,â Paige admitted with a small exhale that was probably supposed to be a chuckle but came out as a weak tremble of breath instead.Â
Azziâs lips curved into a warm smile. Her eyes reflected the candle on the table, making it look like she had a fire in them. And there was probably no better representation of what she was feeling inside than that.Â
âThatâs okay,â Azzi reassured. âIâm nervous too. Because weâre both wearing white and weâre so gonna spill on our clothes.â
Paige let out a soft laugh and Azziâs smile grew wider from the sight.Â
âGod,â Azzi softly groaned. âYouâre so gorgeous, it hurts.â
Paige slowly closed her eyes with a big grin on her face and slowly shook her head.Â
âYouâre the one to talk,â she spoke softly. âYouâre breathtaking.â
Azzi looked down with a shy smile and heat creeping up her cheeks.Â
Soon after, a waiter approached their table. Paige ordered in a bottle of red wine for them.Â
âWeâre so gonna spill,â Azzi mumbled again as the waiter poured up in their wine glasses.Â
Paige just quietly snickered at the obvious concern Azzi had over their clothes.Â
âJust close your mouth when you swallow,â Paige suggested playfully.Â
âOh thanks, Iâll try that,â Azzi rolled her eyes, her lips tugging into a smile.Â
The dinner was spent eating slowly and carefully, by Azziâs orders. But none of them really minded anyway. The conversation between them flowed easily like always, and it was natural for them to stop between bites to share thoughts.Â
âHow many people have you loved?â Azzi asked out of nowhere.
Paige hummed thoughtfully and pondered for a while.
âWell thereâs you,â she started listing up and held up a finger. âJosh, mom, dad, auntie Liv and Mike, Sam, grandma and grandpa, Alexine, my best friend from when I was five⌠all of my friends, really.â
âNo I mean, romantically,â Azzi clarified with a small chuckle.Â
âOh,â Paige said. âOnly you and Sam then.âÂ
âFor real?â Azziâs eyes widened a little.
âYeah,â Paige nodded with a chuckle. âWhy do you look so surprised?â
âI justâŚâ she started. âI have a hard time believing girls werenât all over you at the bar. How come you didnât date anyone between me and Sam?â
âI did,â Paige shrugged. âBut I donât catch feelings easily, so it usually ended with me explaining that I donât see a future with them.â
âHarsh,â Azziâs lips tugged into an amused smirk.Â
âHonest,â Paige corrected. âI donât waste their time, and they donât waste mine.â
Azzi took a sip of her wine. There was something so unexpected and intriguing at the idea of Paigeâs lack of people she has loved. Not that Azzi had loved any more people than her, but still. Paige was older, and she was very lovable. It fascinated Azzi for some reason that Paige seemed to have a somewhat picky heart.
âHow many people have you slept with?â She asked as she put down the wine glass.
Paige cracked into a smug smile. âWhy? Are you jealous?â
âNo,â Azzi replied. A little bit too quickly.
Paige waited a beat, then said: âFour.â
âFour!?â Azziâs eyes were now even wider.Â
âYes?â Paige laughed. âI donât know why you think Iâm some sort of fuckgirl?â
âFour, excluding me?â
âNo, four with you included.â
âYou only slept with three people before me?â Azzi asked, flabbergasted.Â
âYes, why is that so hard to believe?â Paige asked, amused.Â
âBecause look at you!â Azzi exclaimed and gestured her hands up and down.Â
âNow you gotta tell me how many youâve slept with because if thatâs your reasoning, you mustâve slept around,â Paige teased her.Â
Azzi scoffed. âIn college, yeah. A little.â
âYou didnât keep count?â Paige asked.Â
âNot really, but probably around fifteen or something.â
âFigures, youâre so horny,â Paige shrugged.Â
âI am not!â Azzi shot her a look of sheer embarrassment across the table.Â
âYou so are.â
âThatâs just because Iâm in love with you,â Azzi argued. âIâm not horny in general.â
âAnd because Iâm the best youâve ever had,â Paige added with a sly smirk.Â
Azzi sighed. There was no point in trying to argue against it. Paige clearly already knew that.
âYeah, that too,â Azzi mumbled.Â
Paige was grinning from ear to ear.Â
âNot that there's anything wrong with it, but how come only four?â Azzi asked.Â
Paige shrugged. âSex is better when you love the person.â
âSo itâs really about your intolerance to anything inadequate,â Azzi chuckled. âYou want quality sex.â
âDonât put it like that,â Paige laughed. âEverything is just better when you do something with someone you feel safe and relaxed with. Not just the sex, but the conversations, the time spent together, and everything really.â
Azzi hummed with a nod.Â
âLove makes everything better,â Azzi concluded. âI like that.â
âWhatâs love for you?â Paige asked.Â
âSafety, I think,â Azzi tapped her fingers on her chin, deep in thought. âStability. Security.â
âExciting,â Paige said playfully.Â
Azzi scoffed. âI just donât trust feelings too much,â she started. âI think feelings are great. But feelings will fade after some time, and then whatâs left is hopefully a safe foundation. Love isnât just strong feelings, itâs a commitment, itâs a decision. So if you wake up one day and suddenly don't feel super in love with me, even just for a day, I can still trust that youâll be there.â
Paige listened intently.Â
âI mean, realistically, people arenât in the honeymoon phase forever,â Azzi elaborated. âSo I think love is more than just butterflies in your stomach. Love is also that boring stability. Itâs not just happy moments shared together, but the sad and hard times too.â
âI get what you mean,â Paige nodded. âBut I also think it doesnât have to go from a hundred to zero. You said feelings will fade, but I see it more as a transition than something that gets lost. You learn how to love one another in small and big ways. Like you said, it becomes safe.â
âRight,â Azzi smiled. âAnd thereâs something so beautiful with that, I think. That sort of partnership where you just know where you have the other person, and you feel so secure in it.â
âI agree,â Paige smiled as well. âBut I have to say, youâre a little bit more pessimistic than I thought.â
âRealistic, you mean,â Azzi corrected her with a teaseful tone.Â
âNah, I donât think thatâs necessarily realistic for everyone,â Paige countered. âYouâll see. Years from now, youâll see how Iâm still head over heels for you.â
Azzi swallowed.Â
âThatâs nothing you can guarantee,â Azzi said. âItâs nothing you can decide now.â
âWatch me,â Paige smirked and leaned back in her chair confidently. âJust watch me, Azzi.â
Azziâs heart was hammering in her chest. Paigeâs unwavering confidence felt like a warm blanket over her cold heart.Â
âActually,â Paige reached her hand into her pant pocket. âI have something for you.âÂ
âNot another strap, I hope,â Azzi deadpanned and Paige just huffed in disbelief. âMy legs are still shaking.â
âAzzi, Iâm trying to do something romantic here and youâre kind of ruining it,â Paige groaned.Â
She put the jewelry box on the table and slid it forward to Azzi.Â
âOh my God,â Azzi exhaled and took the box in her hand. âYouâre not proposing, are you?â
âAm I down on my knee?â Paige asked sarcastically and laughed at Azziâs knack of not taking the romantic moment seriously. âJust open it.â
âOkay,â Azzi bit her lip and opened the box.Â
Her mouth was hanging open as she realized what was inside. She took the two necklaces in her hand and held it up, letting the pendants hang right in front of her to inspect them closely.Â
âYouâre fucking kidding me,â she murmured. âThis is insane.â
âWhat?â Paige slightly frowned at her strong reaction. Azzi looked more in disbelief than anything else.Â
âWhat the fuck are the odds, this is kinda crazy,â Azzi said again.
âItâs just jewelry, itâs not that crazy,â Paige let out a soft chuckle.Â
Azzi put down the necklaces on the table and started to reach for something in her purse.Â
And lo and behold, she took out a jewelry box and opened it.Â
âYouâre kidding,â Paige exclaimed as Azzi held up two golden necklaces, one with an A pendant and the other with a P.Â
âI bought this at the airport before I saw you,â Azzi told her.Â
Paigeâs mouth was hanging open. There was no way.Â
The two women looked at each other with wide eyes in silence, and then burst out laughing at the same time.Â
âWe should take one each,â Azzi suggested between her giggles.Â
They exchanged jewelry and ended up with two necklaces each. Paige got the A in gold and the P in Sterling silver while Azzi got the P in gold and the A in sterling silver.Â
âUgh, I love us,â Paige shook her head in disbelief. âThis is too damn cute.â
Azzi nodded with a big smile.Â
Her parents had never been strong role models - not in life, and certainly not in love. She didnât admire them as individuals, nor did she see their relationship as something to aspire to.
She had never been in love with anyone she hadnât fallen out of love with eventually, and that scared her a little.Â
But the way Paige loved her so fearlessly, even after she'd confessed her realistic, maybe even pessimistic view on love, felt incredibly relieving.Â
Safe.Â
The thing that mattered the most to her.Â
Paigeâs certainty felt contagious, and it made Azzi feel balanced.Â
It made her feel excited about their future.

âââââ ââ ââ â ââââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
For two months, Azzi and Paige made a rhythm out of distance.
Azzi texted more often than she ever had with anyone and found herself smiling at her phone more than she wanted to admit. Sheâd text little random things, updates about her day. Sometimes it was full paragraphs when she had a lot on her mind and she knew she didnât have to pretend to be anything she wasnât with Paige.
Paige usually took her time to reply because it took her more of a conscious effort to remember her phone existed. Initially Azzi flinched at the lull in responses, checking their message thread often like she was owed urgency. Eventually she started to connect the dots that would always respond.Â
Usually it was at the end of the day. She would make her appearance in the thread with a picture from her day. Once a dusky sky leaking a beautiful lavender behind a slatted fence, another time it was the horses under a large Texas ash tree while the dogs were asleep on their backs. Sheâd always respond with a string of her messages responding to everything Azzi sent before sending her own thoughts about the day.Â
"Mrs. Emory asked about you again today."
"I think Stew misses you. Keeps on running to the guest room.â
"Too hot to wear black out here today. Even my boots were sweating."
Each message made Azzi ache in a strange, shapeless way that longing for another person does.
Azzi likes that Paige never pries her for information. Even when Azziâs messages showed signs of her lifestyle: the glam team tending to her when she sent a selfie, tired replies at odd hours. It was a quiet agreement they easily fell into; if Paige didnât ask, Azzi didnât have to lie or dodge.
They also had a few FaceTimes here and there. The calls were usually late with Paige already under her covers and the dogs laying close by on their dog beds. Every time they spoke her voice was always hoarse, like her long day hadnât let go of her yet.
âWas just about to call it a night,â sheâd say, but each time she followed up with a grin that showed she was waiting for Azzi to call.
Azzi was usually just getting home and as she threw her keys on the island sheâd say, âSure you were.â
Because they were both tired from their days the conversations were never too long and they always ended slower than they started. Paige had a way of making even a goodbye stretch with how calm she was.Â
âAlright then, goodnight sweetheartâ, her finger nowhere near the end call button. Words like that always got to Azzi because Paigeâs Southern cadence made everything sound like she was flirting. Azzi swears she tried not to read too far into itâŚKeywords tried because unfortunately for her most days she failed
Because sometimes Paige would say something simple like, âThat color looks amazing on you,â without second guessing how it came off. Azzi lost count of the times she heard Paige say âWish you could sit with me to watch this sunset,â and mean it so plainly it reminded Azzi of a white bare room that she could paint pastels into.
The only problem is Paige would toss in a âmaâamâ just to tease her but on her end Azzi was left wondering how she meant it. She didnât know if it was from Paige being raised by her grandmother or if there was something more threading through the seams.
However Paige felt, whether she felt anything for Azzi at all, no one could deny that there was something growing like kudzu between their words.
On a specific occasion during one of their later calls Paige was stuck between sleep and conciseness while Azzi was still fully dressed, streetlightâs eclipsing her living room in amber.
âI want to see you,â Azzi said, as she moved around her kitchen to go to the couch. âIn person I mean.â
Paige blinked her eyes open slowly, voice honeyed from sleep. âYeah?âÂ
Azzi nodded, pushing her knees up on the couch to get more comfortable. âYou let me be a part of your world for a weekend. I feel like it might be time for you to come see mine.â
Paige grinned against her pillows, the apples of her cheeks getting a little rosie. âYou plannin on getting me lost in a city?â
Azzi grinned. âYou wouldnât last five minutes without me, country girl.â
âMmm,â Paige hummed, rolling onto her back. âBet Iâd last six.â
What surprised Azzi after that call was that Paige didnât need much convincing. There was no hemming and hawing, just Paige mumbling, âlemme figure a few things out darlinâ and a promise to have an update for her soon.
Over the next few days, Paige tied up her responsibilities to make sure everything was in place for the weekend. She called one of her good friends Ashlynn to stay at the house and tend to the animals, made sure she separated Mrs. Emory's meds after mowing the lawn, and fixed the Langston's broken water heater and got them groceries.
The last thing she did was swap her truck for her friendâs Ford F-150 Raptor. âSo you donât rattle the doors off your beauty on I-35,â Jeff teased as he tossed her the keys that morning.
âŚ
By the time Paige rolled into Dallas, the sky was yawning pink behind her. The city bloomed alive in front of her. Instead of soft trees melting into the sky, buildings rose sharply against the horizon, their glass facades catching the last of the sunlight like magnifying glasses, casting heat in every angled direction. It was louder here. Not even in just volume, the energy felt more frenzied. Everything felt like it was buzzing. People moved impatiently, everyone caught up in their own stories.
Azzi's high rise apartment was taller than the rest of the buildings, planted right in the heart of the city where someone of her caliber belonged. Paige followed the instructions Azzi sent her that morning to get into the garage.Â
She circled around the maze until she got to the level that belonged to Azzi and pulled the Raptor right next to her pink coupe. The engine rumbled to a stop and Paige just sat there for a few moments to take a breather. One of her hands was still on the gear shift, while she rubbed the back of her neck with the other one. Eventually she let out a long breath and picked up her phone to call Azzi.
It rang once before she heard Azzi answer. âIâm in your garage, sweetheart.â
She could hear Azziâs smile through the phone. âStay there, Iâm coming down.â
By the time Paige got out of the truck and got her duffle bag from the backseat elevator doors across the garage were sliding open.
When Azzi stepped out of the elevator the fluorescent lights in the ceiling caught the silver hoops in her ears and the waist chain peeking out from underneath her cropped hoodie. Her hair was pulled up, curls piled high with a few tendrils purposefully left out to frame her features. When she got close enough, Paige caught on to the smell of jasmine and vanilla radiating from her skin. Warm and sweet just like she remembered.
Paige was standing next to the truck, watching her with a softened look. Appreciative of her but never greedy, never ill-mannered. Azzi was doing her own version of the same thing. Her eyes drifted from the worn blue jeans, to the white t-shirt underneath the open blue flannel that brought out the color in her eyes even under the garage lights. A silver cross chain resting just above her collarbone.
Azziâs lips parted in an unintentional smile before she spoke. âHi.â
Paigeâs grin mirrored hers as soon as she heard Azziâs voice. âHi, sweetheart.â
The words landed a little differently in person. Azzi felt them wrap around her chest like a honey dipper dunked deeply into a pit of honey, coming out golden. The warmth of it coated her ribs, drizzled down and settled somewhere behind her sternum. âI missed hearing that,â she said, a little bashfully.
Paige gave her another crooked grin, saying everything with her eyes. When Azzi reached for her bag, Paige tightened her hand around the leather, shaking her head no like Azzi should know better. Azzi sighed before they walked beside each other as they made their way to the private elevator.
The ride was quick and pretty quiet the entire time. Paige all of a sudden felt a little shy.
When the elevator doors opened into Azziâs apartment Paige stepped out first.
Just off the initial view alone it was apparent how expansive the space was. The ceilings were high enough to have another floor and light wood stretched across the open floor plan, all bathed in natural light. Floor to ceiling windows wrapped around almost every wall, offering a full view of the Dallas skyline.
It felt like the complete opposite of the farmhouse. There were no creaky floors, or the sound of animals just outside the back door. The clutter was minimal and Azzi had an earth toned throw blanket over the couch. The house was completely modernized but there were small sprinkles of Azzi throughout that Paige wanted to help her expand on.Â
Paige set her bag down on a wooden bench near the elevator, sliding her boots off as her eyes moved around the space.
Azzi watched her take it in. Observing her reaction to the quiet luxury of the place, but the more she watched the more indifferent Paige seemed which made her heart swell a little before she decided to just outwardly ask. âYou good?â
Paige nodded once, slowly. âYup,â she said. âJustâŚbig.â
Azzi laughed. âItâs not that big.â
Paige glanced at her before her eyes drifted toward the windows again. âDarlin, I can see the clouds through your windows.â
Before Azzi could tease her about it, a voice called her name. âAzzi.â
Azziâs eyebrows lifted, completely forgetting people were still there. âOh right,â she mumbled under her breath, then cleared her throat and walked toward the kitchen, grabbing Paigeâs attention to tell her to follow.
They walked in to see two people standing near the oversized kitchen island. Katie, Azziâs mother, and Azziâs manager, were mid conversation, when they walked in but stopped when they saw Paige walking in with Azzi.
âThis is my mom,â Azzi said, one hand brushing Paigeâs lower back as she stepped forward to introduce them.
Katie offered Paige her hand, making sure to give her a kind smile as she did. Paige shook Katieâs hand, her own natural grin sliding into place. âItâs really nice to meet you, maâam.â
Katie tilted her head, already charmed into giving her a genuine smile. âOh, you donât have to call me that. Katieâs just fine.â
Paigeâs grin widened. âIf I did that maâam, my grandmother would haunt my dreams,â she said, letting out a short laugh.
That made both Fudd women laugh. Katieâs a little fuller, while Azziâs was softer but a little more affected.
âAnd this is my manager, Skye,â Azzi added, glancing over at the young woman beside her mother, who had been watching Paige and Azzi both with interest.
Paige turned and extended her hand again. âNice to meet you, as well,â she said, just as respectfully.
Skye shook her hand with a slight smile in Azziâs direction. âYouâve got manners, Iâll give you that.â
Paige tipped her chin in modest agreement and a silent thank you.
Katie looked between Azzi and Paige as she threw her hair into a ponytail. âSo Azzi told me about the little car situation,â she said, laughing a little. âThat she ended up staying on your farm for a few days?â
Paige nodded. Her posture was much more relaxed than everyone else, like she was still standing on open land instead of expensive wooden floors. âYes maâam thatâs right,â she said, glancing toward Azzi. âHad to make sure she didnât try to ride the tractor out of there,â she added charmingly.
Azzi rolled her eyes, but Paige kept going. âShe was a natural on a horse, though.â
Katie raised her eyebrows, pleasantly surprised. âIs that so?â
Azzi shrugged, pretending not to smile. âI held on and didnât fall. That counts for something.â
âShe did a lot more than that. Everything counts for a lot when it comes to ridin Rosie,â Paige said, the natural flirtatious drawl she has with Azzi forming on the edges of her words.
Skye noticed something more than just Paige complimenting horseback riding and looked at Azzi with one of her eyebrows raised.
Azzi ignored it.
Behind them, Paige had drifted toward the windows, soaking in the view in front of her.
Katie and Skye started gathering their things, sensing that Azzi most likely wanted to be alone.
âAlright,â Katie said, scrolling through her calendar app. âYour car service for the morning will be downstairs by four thirty, glamâs at five. Itâll be the same team as always.â
Azzi nodded, listening but watching Paige lean her forehead closer to the window to see the lines of traffic two dozen floors below.
Skye added, âIâll meet you at the Dallas News studio to record the GMA segment and then we may or may not have to stop by the arena forââ
Azzi cut in smoothly, âActually, can you just text me everything?â
Skye blinked in slight shock, caught mid sentence. âUh yeah, sure of course.â
Katie, who was a little oblivious, kept going. âJust make sure you stretch tonight honey. Youâre not gonna want to be stiff tomorrow morning after all the drills youââ
Azziâs voice cut in again casually. âI know mom, I got it.â Azzi looked toward Paige and she was still seemingly entertained by the windows, not caring about the conversation going on behind her. Azzi silently thanked the universe that Paige wasnât nosey.Â
âOk weâll get out of your hair. Call if you need anything,â Katie said.
Azzi nodded, leaning down to give her mom a hug. Katie kissed her cheek, then turned to Paige. âIt was really nice meeting you, Paige.â
Paige turned around, the city still glittering behind her. âPleasureâs mine, maâam.â
Katie gave her a warm smile before stepping toward the elevator with Skye. When the two of them left it left the apartment quieter and the energy a little lighter.
âYou want something to drink?â
Paige wandered back toward the island. âSome cold water would be amazing.â
Azzi pulled a glass from the cabinet and walked to the refrigerator to fill it with cold water. Her back was to Paige but her awareness was trained entirely on her presence. The air felt different with Paige in her space.Â
When she turned around and held the glass out, Paige took it saying, âThank you,â their fingers brushing in the exchange.
Azzi watched as Paige brought the glass to her lips, tilted her head back slightly, throat bobbing as she drank. Her lashes fluttered before they settled and when she lowered the glass her eyes flicked toward Azzi.
âYou alright?â Paige asked when she noticed Azzi looking.
Azzi blinked, realizing sheâd been caught staring and all of a sudden she felt more like a schoolgirl with a crush than the 24 year old millionaire she was. âYeah,â she said, trying to shake off the giddy feeling, adding a joke to mask the truth, âyou just drink water a little dramatically, didnât realize that was a thing.â
Paige grinned. âIs that so?â
Azzi shrugged as she moved to one of the seats at the island, adding some space to calm her chest but not too much. Her smile stayed put even as she looked down at the smooth marble countertop. âApparently so.â
The space got quiet again, but it wasnât empty. Their energy, whatever it was, hung between them. Azziâs apartment, typically completely spacious and serene, suddenly felt smaller, cozier.
Paige watched Azzi in a way that made the younger girl more aware of herself. Her hands, her breathing, the way her foot tapped against the footrest of the stool. After a few seconds, Paige noticed her fidgeting a little so she asked, âAm I making you uncomfortable, sweetheart?â
Azziâs eyes flew up. âNo,â she said, maybe too quickly. Then she calmed her voice. âNo, not at all.â
Paige continued to study her, patience in her eyes. âWhat is it then?â
Azzi rested her chin on the palm of her hand, fingers curled under her jaw. âYou just have aâŚpresence.âÂ
Paige nodded.
Azziâs gaze dropped, then moved back up. She looked a little embarrassed, like even trying to explain was making her feel more than she wanted to. âI donât know,â she admitted. âEverything on the farm felt natural. Like I knew how to just be around you there. Now youâre here, in my space, and itâs different because Iâm different here. Itâs not bad justââ she let out a long breath. âI donât fully remember how we moved around each other but I want to. Iâve been excited about this. I just guess Iâm a little in my head.â
Paigeâs eyes softened at her in a way that made Azziâs chest ache again. âThereâs no right or wrong way to act around me, sweetheart,â she said. âYou donât gotta perform or be anything you donât wanna be. Just tell me what you need.â
âI kinda wanted a hug when you got here.â
Paige set her glass down on the counter before walking around the island. Azzi stood up when she got close, like her body had been waiting for an excuse to move toward Paige.
She relaxed into Paige arms like warm tea meeting the base of a hoarse sore throat. Soothing in a way that felt necessary for her survival. The cool air conditioning whispering through the apartment highlighted just how warm Paigeâs body was against hers. Azzi closed her eyes and let her head rest on Paigeâs shoulder.
Paige kept her hands in the middle of Azziâs back, rubbing her thumb between her shoulder blades. âWe gotta get you to slow down in the city too, darlinâ,â she whispered, her voice close enough to Azziâs ear to vibrate through her chest.
Azzi smiled into the hug. âThink I might need you to teach me how.â
Paige chuckled under her breath. âFirst stepâs already done.âÂ
Azzi gave Paige a quick squeeze before pulling back, her hands trailing down Paigeâs arms before falling to her own sides. She took a step back, eyes skimming over Paige again with a small grin. âSo this is your version of dressing up, hm?â she teased. âI donât think Iâve ever seen you in anything besides a white tee or a tank top. The flannelâs definitely a nice surprise.â
âThatâs âcause 85% of my closet is plain tees. The other 15% isâŚflannels and other shirts I wear when someone fancy invites me to the city.â
Azzi laughed at the concept of being fancy. âYouâre ridiculous.â
âStill charming,â Paige said, with a grin.
Azzi didnât bother denying it as she moved back to her seat at the island, gesturing for Paige to do the same. âUnfortunately we picked a weekend thatâs a little packed for me tomorrow.â
âYeah, I heard. Seems youâre a busy woman darlinâ.â
Azzi laughed, the sound angelic to Paigeâs ears. âIf itâs okay with you, I want you to come with me tomorrow. See what my day to day looks like.â
There was a very brief Paise before Paige asked, âIs that something youâd want?â
Azzi looked at her understanding the question wasnât as surface level as it seemed. Paige didnât care for the logistics of the whole thing. She wanted to know if Azzi was ready to open her up to that part of her life.Â
Azziâs tone was more curious than accusatory when she asked, âWhy havenât you ever asked me what I do? Or looked into it for that matter.â
âBecause if it was somethin you wanted to dictate how we interacted youâd tell me on your own accord.â
âI play basketball,â Azzi said plainly. âProfessionally I mean.â
Paige nodded, storing that fact about Azzi with the rest of them. Azzi kept going. âIâm in the WNBA, which Iâm sure you probably donât care about but my first season ended not too long ago. Right before I ended up on the farm actually.â
Paige grinned at Azziâs small ramble before offering a simple, âThatâs amazing Azzi.â
Azzi nodded once, but her smile didnât come and she kept rambling a little. âIt is and it isnât. Itâs been my dream my entire life. But itâs also been a little exhausting. Like, for the past year every part of me has been stretched thin. My body, mind, everything.â
She squeezed the bridge of her nose with two fingers to calm herself down. âThe travel, the overnight change in the life and people Iâve known since I was 18, the spotlight, expecting to save a franchise overnightâŚall of it just moves so fast. Sometimes it feels like I donât even get to just be in the life I worked so hard for. Iâm just constantly managing it. Trying to stay afloat so my name isnât in headlines for not living up to expectations.â
Paige leaned back in the chair to keep her posture open. âIs that why youâve been avoidin it with me?â
Azzi nodded. âPart of it is justââ She paused, trying to figure out what she wanted to say fully. âI wanted to experience being with someone who didnât know anything about that version of me. I just wanted to be Azzi with you. Doing that has given me some of the best days Iâve had in a really long time.â
Paige smiled at her, wanting to reach out to touch her but deciding to keep her hands to herself. âThen youâll always just be Azzi with me, yeah?â
Azziâs smile came slowly when she heard Paige say that, like it had to let the seed be planted and bloom through her chest before she fully processed it.Â
âYou successfully ridin Rosie is probably more impressive than anything else in my book anyway,â Paige added to lighten Azziâs eyes.
That made Azzi snort which caused a loud laugh to burst from her chest as she exhaled the tension she was holding in her shoulders.
Azzi leaned back against her chair, warmth pooling in her brown eyes. âAre you hungry? I can cook for you.â
Paige smiled at the offer. âHow about you go get a little comfortable first?â
Azzi raised an eyebrow, pushing herself upright as her hoops shimmered under the kitchen lights. âWhat, you donât like me in this?â
Paige caught the bait easily, but she didnât play into it the way she knew Azzi. Instead, she softened her voice, intending to make her words sound as genuine as possible as she looked at Azzi. âYouâd look lovely in anything, beautiful. I just want you to be comfortable in your own home before you start tendinâ to me is all.â
The words made Azzi go still for a second. Before her fingers started playing with the strings of the cropped hoodie a little nervously her smile bashful now that Paige moved past every version of flirting she knew hot to deflect. She bit her bottom lip before whispering, âIâll be right back.â
When Azzi came back to the kitchen her curls were looser and her skin was bare skin bare. She had on a slightly oversized t-shirt and short cotton shorts. Her face showed her youth without the makeup.
Paige was sitting on the couch, her body angled toward the melting skyline. The city shimmered through the windows, soft purples and deepening blue streaked with gold as the sun dipped lower behind the other buildings.
Azziâs voice traveled from behind her. âYou like the view?â
Paige smiled at the glass before she turned her head. âI do now.â
Azzi flushed just enough to notice it, brushing past it huffing as she walked into the kitchen. She washed her hands under the faucet, drying them before opening the fridge and scanning the shelves.
By the time she stood back up with a few ingredients in her hand, Paige had moved from the couch to the kitchen, rolling her sleeves up.
âWhat are you doing?â
Paige was at the sink washing her hands. âIâm helpinâ you cook.â
Azzi was already shaking her head no. âYou donât need to do that.â
âYou wanna cook alone while I just sit around in your apartment, sweetheart?â Paige said. Her voice had that familiar southern twang that made Azzi feel like she was standing in a field somewhere rather than in the middle of a luxury high rise. Paige dried her hands casually, keeping her eyes on Azzi. âDoesnât feel right to me.â
Azzi crossed her arms and leaned against the counter. âIf I remember thatâs exactly what you made me do at the farm.â
Paige tilted her head, grinning. âThat was different.â
âWas it?â
âYes maâam I was lettinâ you show off those fine manners of yours sitting at my table.â
Azzi squinted her eyes, giving Paige a skeptical look before she handed her a cutting board. âMmm I see. Well weâre making tomato sauce, soâŚâ She gestured vaguely toward Paigeâs chest. âYou might wanna lose the shirt.âÂ
Both of Paigeâs eyebrows lifted in shock. But she was always one to follow directions so she stepped toward the island and turned away, tugging the flannel off first, before she pulled the white tee over her head. That left her in a black sports bra, and her jeans that were low enough to show the band of her Calvinâs at her waist.
Azzi looked away immediately, staring a little too hard at the tomatoes on the counter. Suddenly peeling garlic was the most important thing in the world.
âYou alright over there?â
Azzi nodded, still not looking up. âYeah, fine. Just donât blame me if you get splashed in the stomach.â
Paige laughed, stepping next to her and picking up the knife. âYes maâam.â
Azzi rolled her eyes, âStop calling me that.â
Paige chuckled.
As they cooked they fell into an easy flow without needing to speak too much. Azzi handed Paige things she needed chopped and Paige picked up on Azziâs movements and what she needed like sheâd watch her move around a kitchen in a thousand lifetimes.Â
There was fresh pasta dough resting under a cloth and when it was ready Azzi rolled it out on the floured counter while Paige shaped the turkey meatballs. Early on Azzi realized she needed to be slick when it came to handing Paige the vegetables after sliding her zucchini and putting spinach in the pot.Â
Paige had suspiciously eyed the growing pile of greens. âHow many vegetables you plan on sliding to me?â
Azzi smirked, not looking up. âYouâre not getting out of it so just go ahead and cut them.â
Paige grinned. âYou gonna tell me youâre putting kale in there too?â
Azzi didnât answer, just added another handful of spinach into the sauce with a smile on her face.
While the meatballs were browning in the pan, Azzi reached for her phone to put on some music, soft R&B floating through her built-in speakers throughout the apartment.
Azzi started to hum under her breath while Paige wiped her hands on a towel and leaned against the counter to watch Azzi slot the pasta through the machine.
When Azzi turned around to stir the sauce she took note of Paige looking at her. âYouâve done this before,â Azzi said, glancing at the uniform shape of the meatballs sizzling in a pan.
Paige shrugged modestly. âUsed to help my grandma make fresh pasta every few Sundays. We didnât do turkey though, thatâs all you.â
Azzi smiled, her eyes softening as she glanced over at Paige. âDid she teach you everything?â
âYeah mostly,â Paige said quietly. âTaught me a lot of what I know. Being kind, respectful, takinâ care of folks who need takinâ care of.â
Azzi nodded, making sure she kept her eyes on Paige to let her know she was listening. âI wish I couldâve met her.â
Paigeâs smile was faint. âIâm sure she wouldâve loved you. Tell you all about how amazing you are every chance sheâd get.â
After Paige said that a moment lingered between them. It was a little more taut than usual and neither one of them wanted to be the one to break it. There was something comforting about the moment, in the way both of them just wanted to exist in it.
But then a bit of sauce splattered up from the pot and landed on Paigeâs stomach making her flinch at the stinging sensation.
Azzi laughed as she pointed at Paige. âSee?! Your shirt wouldâve been ruined.â
Paige chuckled, wiping the spot with a napkin âMightâve been worth it over getting popped.â
Azzi grabbed the bundle of pasta and dropped it into the pot of boiling water, the steam rising and curling around her jawline. âFresh pasta only takes a few minutes,â she said to Paige. âSo it should be done soon.â
Paige reached into a cabinet and pulled out two plates. âThese okay?â
âPerfect.â
Azzi turned off the heat and wiped her hands on a towel. âGo sit,â she said, nodding toward the general direction of her table.
Paige nodded before going to discover the dining area.
When she found it the table was the perfect size for maybe six people and she could tell it was made of rich dark wood. There was a muted olive runner that went across the middle and overhead there was a glass chandelier that spilled down from the ceiling.
The artwork on the walls was a mix of aesthetic memories. There were a few framed black and white pictures of what looked like memories. Azzi with friends, family, teammates. The apartmentâs wide windows allowed for light to stretch into this portion of the house, letting in the last of the sky's watercolor hues.
Paige was still taking everything in when Azzi walked over holding two plates and a bottle. Azzi put the plate in front of Paige first, then set down a cold Lone Star next to it.
Paigeâs eyes flicked to the bottle, then up to Azziâs face. âYou got beer for me?â
Azzi shrugged, trying not to put too much attention on the fact. âFigured I should have something for you to drink besides water.â
Paige leaned back in her chair to stretch her arms above her head, unable to hide her smile. âThatâs real thoughtful of you. Thank you, sweetheart.â
Azzi sat down across from her, reaching for her fork. âDonât thank me yet. You havenât tasted the food yet.â
Paige kept her eyes on Azzi as she picked up her fork. âI got the strange feelinâ that Iâm gonna like everything you feed me.â
Azziâs cheeks warmed at where her brain went before she took her first bite to distract herself, letting the silence settle between them.Â
For the most part dinner wasnât too eventful. They talked about Azziâs day before Paige got there and Paigeâs drive to the city. When that was done they talked about whatever came to mind, just basking in the presence of one another again. When they were eating Azzi stood up first and grabbed their plates.Â
âLet me take that,â Paige offered.Â
Azzi shook her head no.
âYou sure?â
Azzi smiled. âYes Iâm sure. Go take a shower and wind down. I put towels in the guest room for you.â
Paige squinted at her, about to say something but Azzi spoke before she could. âDonât be hard headed.âÂ
Paige grinned, deciding not to fight Azzi on it anymore as she pushed her chair back. âAlright then, yes maâam.â Azzi threw a napkin at her back as she walked away, making Paige laugh.
Azzi walked toward the kitchen to start cleaning up. She rinsed everything in the sink before sliding them into the dishwasher. When she turned around to wipe off the counters, she saw Paigeâs shoes by the elevator and her shirts draped over one of the island chairs. The simpleness of it all made her smile. The small evidence that Paige was here in her space.Â
The dishwasher hummed lowly, the only rhythm inside the quiet home. Most of the lights were off, except for the lamp next to the couch that gave the living room a soft pool of light. Azzi was curled into the corner of the large sectional as she read. It was a book sheâd read before but she kept returning to it, finding something new to love about it each time.
The city outside the windows was quieter now, distant headlights flickering like fireflies instead of angry wasps in traffic.Â
She heard the door to the guest room open before Paige made her way toward the living room. Azzi glanced up from the book when Paige came into view towel drying her hair the smell of eucalyptus drifting behind her.
âHey,â Paige said quietly, coming around the couch.
Azzi dog eared her page. âHey.â
âJust comin to say goodnight.â Paige hovered for a second before sitting on the couch next to Azzi, leaving a respectful amount of space between them.
Azzi smiled gently. âThe shower was alright?â
âFresh as Iâll ever be.â Paige nodded toward the book in her lap. âWhatâre you readinâ?â
Azzi held it up for her to see.
Paige squinted at the cover before grinning. âIs that the one you said makes you cry every time you read it?â
Azzi laughed through her nose. âMaybe.â
Paige hummed and leaned back, looking toward the windows.
âIâm glad youâre here,â Azzi said, almost out of nowhere.
Paige looked at her, memorizing the way she looked under the warm glow of the lamp. Then she smiled. âI am too.â She stood up after that, stretching her arms back again. âIâll get outta your way. Long day tomorrow, right?â
Azzi nodded. âYeah.â
âSleep well, sweetheart.â
âYou too, Paige.â
Azzi watched until Paige disappeared down the hall, the sound of the door closing behind her. She sat there for a few more minutes, letting her heart move slow without any interruptions. Eventually, she turned off the lamp and walked toward her room, ready to call it a night.
âŚ
It was around 11:30PM, but Paige still couldnât fall asleep.
She was laying on her back in the guest room, eyes tracing the lights that bled through the windows. The blinds were drawn, but they werenât blackout so the slats could only do so much to dim the city lights. A car horn blared in the distance, and Paigeâs eyebrows furrowed. She rolled onto her side and pulled the covers tighter around herself. Then she rolled onto her back again. Then her other side.
Paige was used to complete darkness and silence so full if you listened close enough you could hear the insects breathing. Even the air was different in the city; a lot less still, wired by electricity.
She let out a long exhale and stared at the ceiling for a few more minutes. Eventually, the restlessness won and she slipped out of bed. Her bare feet padded across the cool floors as she walked to the kitchen for some water, hoping to find peace in another area of the apartment.
Paige was surprised when she saw that Azzi was still awake. The living room light was off, but the glow from the kitchen under cabinet lights spilled out to outline her silhouette. Azzi was curled into the same corner of the couch with a cup cradled in her hands. Her gaze was distant until she noticed Paige step into view.
âCouldnât sleep?â
Paige offered her a sheepish grin. âDidnât realize how loud the world can be when youâre used to only hearinâ crickets.â
Azzi nodded. âI get that.â
Paigeâs eyes moved over Azzi slowly before glancing down at herself in just a sports bra and boxers. âIâm sorry. If I knew you were still up, I wouldâve put more on,â she said, brushing a hand across her arm, suddenly aware of how bare she was.
Azzi waved her off. âYouâre fine. Itâs your house too this weekend.â
Paige smiled at that and sat down, keeping a few inches of cushion between them. âWhatâs goinâ on with you, sweetheart?â
Azzi hesitated before offering a shrug. âJust cold by myself in my room. Trying to warm up.â
The answer felt simple but the way Azzi said it hinted at a different meaning so Paige didnât push. She just nodded, letting the silence hold what didnât need to be said out loud.
She tilted her chin toward the mug in Azziâs hands. âThatâs the yerbamante you always drinking?â Her accent curled around the words making Azzi laugh and lean her head back against the couch.Â
âYerba Mate,â Azzi corrected. âAnd no, itâs not, thank you very much. This is just chamomile.â
Paige grinned at her, swiping her tongue across her bottom lip.
Azzi turned to look at her as she sipped from her cup. âYou want me to make you some? Itâll help you sleep.â
âIâd appreciate that,â Paige said, her tone reflecting her gratitude.
Azzi gave her a soft smile and pushed herself up from the couch. She moved through the kitchen to pull down a second mug before pouring warm water into it from the kettle. She glanced over her shoulder. âYou want anything in it? Honey, lemon, agave?â
Paige looked at her from the couch. âNo need for all that extra stuff âM sure the way you made it is perfect.â
Azzi finished steeping the tea with a smile on her face that she failed to hide. Once she was done she brought the second mug over, handing it to Paige with both hands.
âThank you darlin,â Paige whispered.
Azzi sat down a little closer this time making their knees bump a little when she got comfortable.Â
Paige lifted the mug to take a sip and Azziâs eyes lingered on her, catching something beneath the hem of her sports bra right near her ribs. âI didnât know you had a tattoo,â Azzi said.
Paige looked down, usually forgetting it was there. âMatthew 25:35â40,â she answered, putting her mug down for a second on the table. She lifted the band of her sports bra for Azzi to see the delicate cursive along her skin.
Azziâs eyes traced the verse. âWhat does it mean?â
ââŻâFor I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.ââ
Azzi looked at her for a while like something clicked into place for her at that moment. Instead of voicing her own thoughts she said, âIâve noticed religionâs important to you.â
âItâs helped me with a lot,â Paige said. âPart of how I was raised with my grandmother. I feel like a lot of religion is just helpinâ people, being honest and livin with the right intentions. I live by those things more than anything. Try to, anyway I mean.â
Azziâs eyes didnât leave her. âI can tell,â she said softly.
Paige grinned while a faint blush rose up her neck. âYouâre flatterinâ me.â
âIâm not.â
Paige noticed their lingering gazes becoming more common but she held it before she looked away, just from needing a second to breathe. They both sipped their tea, not bothered by the silence as they looked out the window.
After about five minutes or so Azzi spoke first. âHave you ever had a serious relationship?â
Paige shifted to get more comfortable causing them to get a little closer as she subtly leaned toward Azzi.
âI fell for the whole high school sweetheart thing,â Paige said, laughing a little. âYâknow the way everybody likes to do in the South. We were friends first, grew up together. I asked her to homecomin my sophomore year.â
Azzi sipped her tea as she listened.
âStayed together all through high school and most of my first year of college. At that point we were together for the comfort of knowin somebody and we both realized it. Ended things before it could get messy.â
Paige reached for her mug again, taking a sip before she kept going. âNever really met anyone after that cause of the whole college scene.â
âToo many keg stands?â Azzi asked, leaning her head back on the back of the couch but turning to look at Paige.
Paige grinned at her. âSomething like that. I just respected women too much to pretend I didnât care about âem for a night. That whole scene never sat right with me.â
Azzi let out a quiet snort. âYouâre a rare one.â
Paige shrugged like she didnât think it was much. âOnce I got settled on the farm, all the elders made it their personal goal to marry me off. Mrs. Emory swore up and down she had the perfect girl for me.â
Azzi raised her eyebrow. âOh yeah? What happened with that one?â
Paige chuckled, shaking her head. âNever got around to meetinâ her.â Paige leaned back against the couch and turned her head sideways at Azzi. Their positions mirrored each other before she kept going. âThen this brown eyed girl from Dallas got stuck in the country and changed her mind.â
Azzi blinked, a smile pulling at her muscles before Paige finished the sentence.
âSaid I should focus on gettinâ to know her instead.â
Azziâs smile came slowly. Something flickering in her eyes as Paigeâs words took shape behind them. âAnd what do you think about that?â
Paige didnât rush to answer. Opting to look at Azzi from this new angle instead. The curve of her cheekbone in the low lighting, the faint crease between her eyebrows that always showed when she was trying to hold herself still. Paige gave her a small smile when she was done, meeting her gaze. âI think Iâm way outta my league but everything Iâve gotten to know about her so far has shown me how incredible she is.â
âI donât think anybody could be out of your league,â Azzi said, eyes locked on Paige like she couldnât look away if she wanted to.
They sat in that mirrored position for a while just watching one another, a silent conversation passing between them. Azziâs eyes dipped to Paigeâs lips before immediately coming back up, just in time to catch the way Paigeâs gaze softened.
Their bodies leaned in by muscle memory alone before Paige paused. She whispered considering how close Azziâs face was to hers. âI canât kiss you, darlinâ.â
Azziâs eyebrows lifted, her tone matching the furrow between them. âWhy not?â
Paige took in a slow breath. ââCause I was raised with manners and because I respect you.â
Azzi tilted her head closer, grinning as she whispered, âI think kissing me is probably the most respectful thing you could do right now.â
That pulled a laugh from the back of Paigeâs throat. She reached out, brushing her fingers against Azziâs temple to tuck a loose curl behind her ear.
Azzi closed her eyes for just a second, leaning into the touch without thinking. That small motion made Paigeâs fingers linger longer than she needed to. The softness of Azziâs skin, the warmth now radiating off of her grounded Paige, held her there for a few extra heartbeats. âYou should get some rest,â she murmured, almost like she didnât fully want to say it. âLong day tomorrow, right?â
Azzi opened her eyes and gave the smallest nod, keeping her gaze on Paige as she pulled her hand away.
Paige gave her a gentle smile before she got up from the couch. She leaned down to press a tender kiss to the area right where Azziâs hairline met her forehead. When Paige straightened her posture she picked up both of their mugs with one hand and carried them to the kitchen.Â
When she got back she paused at the edge of the couch. âGood night.âÂ
Azziâs voice met hers like a whisper on a still lake. âGood night, Paige.â
âŚ
A few hours later, the world was cloaked in early morning fog when Paige stepped out of the guest room. She had on washed Abercrombie & Fitch camo pants and of course a plain white tee shirt. Her hair was pulled back into a low, messy bun and sheâd thrown a trucker hat over it. Her glasses in place instead of her usual contacts with how early it was.
Azzi was barefoot in the kitchen with sweatpants and a cropped shirt on. Her face bare and somehow more beautiful in the early morning.
They met each otherâs eyes across the open space, both of them wearing a sleepy smile, reserved for people who felt good in each otherâs presence before words left their mouths.
Paigeâs voice was a little horse still when she said, âGood morninâ sweetheart.â
Azzi handed her a tall glass as soon as she was close enough. âMorning.âÂ
Paige took the green smoothie, holding it at eye level as she inspected it.
Azzi laughed when she saw what Paige was doing. âDonât start,â she warned. âJust drink it.â
Paige side eyed her a little, but the corners of her mouth twitched as she brought the glass to her lips taking a cautious sip of the smoothie. When it landed on her tongue she pulled the glass away squinting at it again. âYou put kale in this?â
âI did.â
Paige sighed dramatically, sitting down at one of the island stools. âFigures.â
Azzi leaned back against the counter, watching Paige take another sip despite herself.
âWhatâs on the agenda today?â Paige asked.
âI have a small recorded segment for GMA at the Dallas News Studioâ she said, ticking it off on her fingers. âMight have to do a shoot for next seasonâs jerseys but thatâs still up in the air. Then just a few quick endorsement videos for a skincare brand, and I think thatâs it. Unless Skye decides to slide something else on my calendar last minute like she loves to do.â
âYou said âI think thatâs itâ like thatâs not already a full day.â
Azzi shrugged, picking up her own smoothie to finish it. âIâm used to it.â
When she was done she placed the glass in the sink. âBy the way, they had to schedule a car to pick us up. I still havenât gotten the oil changed on mine.â
Paige raised her eyebrow. âThe oil I told you to change two weeks ago?â
âIâm just a girl,â Azzi said, smiling to flash her dimples.
Paige hummed. âYou are. But we can just take the truck.â
Azzi opened her mouth to object, but Paige kept going. âIf weâve got time later, Iâll change your oil for you and rotate your tires.â
âYou donât have to do all that. I can just hire someone like I was supposed to.â
âI know you can,â Paige said, standing up to rinse her glass. âBut Iâm here so I can do it.â
It was too early for Azzi to argue so she just agreed for the sake of seeing Paige fixing her car again. Azzi canceled the chauffeur for the morning and they stepped into the elevator. Azzi leaned against the wall, scrolling on her phone while Paige stood next to her with her hands in her pockets.
When they got off Paige walked ahead of Azzi slightly, unlocking the truck as she walked toward the passenger side. She pulled the door open and offered Azzi her hand. Azzi smiled at the gesture, slipping her hand into Paigeâs, letting her help her step up into the truck. Once Azzi was settled, Paige shut the door and walked toward the driver's side.
âŚ
After about 20 minutes of driving Paige eased the truck to a stop in front of the valet stand. Before the attendant could come out of the building, she was getting out and walking around to open the door for Azzi again.
Azzi looked down at her with a smile when she saw Paige offer her hand again. âYou know I can get out of a truck by myself, right?â
Paige grinned at her. âIâm sure you can but thatâs not the point.â
Azzi just slipped her hand into Paigeâs and let her help her down.
Inside the building, Skye was waiting near the elevator, scrolling through something on her phone with her planner tucked under one arm. She looked up when she heard Azzi walk in.Â
âYouâre late,â she said in a tone that was more of a reflex than real annoyance. âMorning.â
Azzi was used to her friend's rigidness when it came to scheduling. âGood morning.â
Paige slowed down to greet her properly, her manners showing despite everyone else being in a bit of a frenzy. âGood mornin.â How are you?â
Skye glanced back, momentarily surprised by the courtesy. âIâm good, thanks. Hope yâall got some sleep.â
All three of them stepped into the elevator. Paige stood near the back with her hands in her pockets watching the floor numbers tick up. Azzi was standing right in front of her toward the side a little bit as her fingers flew across her phone screen as she responded to texts. It wasnât intentional, but the space between her and Paige was pretty narrow and Azzi barely noticed how every time she sent a message her arm brushed against Paigeâs chest.Â
Azzi glanced up from her phone to see Skye shooting her a subtle look. She had one eyebrow raised and her eyes flicked from Paige to Azzi for emphasis. Azzi blinked at her waiting for her to say something, but she never said anything, just went back to her own phone.
The elevator opened and as soon the three of them walked to Azziâs glam room it was filled with energy. Hair and makeup were already there with their carts turning on vanity lights. Her stylist was unzipping garment bags and putting pieces on racks and there were a couple of BTS cameras already stationed throughout the room.Â
Azzi stepped in first, offering a few good mornings to all the familiar faces. She made her way to the chair centered in front of the vanity and set her bag down on the table.
Behind her Paige moved a lot slower as her eyes scanned the room as she tried to make sense of a world that moved a few clicks faster than what she was used to. She didnât seem in the midst of it all but anyone looking from the outside could see the contrast in her calm presence versus the fury of the room around her.
Azzi turned around and saw Paige looking around. She smiled at her before calling her name to get her attention. âYou can sit here,â she said, gesturing to the seat next to hers.
Before Azzi could say more, Skye walked up to her, tilting her head to a quieter part of the room. âLet me talk to you real quick.â Azzi looked confused but followed her anyway.Â
Skye lowered her voice to keep what she needed to say between them. âWhatâs going on there?â she asked, referring to Paige, who had just picked up a newspaper that was sitting on the table.
Azzi kept her expression neutral for once. âNothing.â
âUh huh. Do we need an NDA?â
âNo.â
Skye looked slightly unconvinced. âAre you sure? Weâre going to be doing a lot thatâs not necessarily public today. You trust the extra eyes one hundred percent?â
Azzi turned her head and couldnât help the big grin that pulled at her face when she saw Paige reading the comic section of the paper. âPaige?â
Paige perked up when she heard Azzi call her name. âYeah?â
âWhereâs your phone?â
Paige patted her pockets with both hands, narrowing her eyes when she didnât feel it. She looked back at Azzi with a sheepish grin. âI mightâve left it at your place. Too busy drinkin that kale.â
Azzi laughed telling her it was fine before she turned back toward Skye. âSee? No NDA necessary. In case you canât tell sheâs more of the off the grid type.â
After Skye was satisfied Azzi went back to sit in her chair as the glam team got to work. One of them started sectioning off her curls while the makeup artist patted moisturizer into her skin. A mellow playlist was playing from someoneâs speaker to fill the space.
For the first thirty minutes or so no one really spoke considering how early it was. Azzi scrolled through her phone absently while Paige read through each section of the newspaper. She was such a stark contrast to everything around them that Azzi had to sneak a picture. When she was done she put her phone on her lap before getting Paigeâs attention. âYouâre such an old man.â
Paige looked up from the paper smiling at Azzi. âHow else am I supposed to keep up with whatâs goinâ on in the world?â
âI donât know, maybe joining the 21st century like everybody else?â
Paige leaned back in the chair, shaking her head. âOld fashioned wayâs always better. Doesnât have a phone yellinâ in my pocket every five minutes.â
Azzi was about to tell Paige about DND when her stylist came over holding a binder full of wardrobe options. âPick a few of your favorites for today.âÂ
Azzi took it and flipped through it slowly. She looked at a couple of the options closer than others before she turned the binder toward Skye. âWhatâs your favorite?â
Skye didnât even need to look up from her phone, already knowing the options. âThe fitted cream jacket, page nine.â
Azzi flipped to it and nodded. Then she turned toward Paige and swiveled the binder in her direction. âAlright, your turn. Which one do you like?â
Paige gave her a charming smile. âI like whichever one you like.â
Azzi narrowed her eyes. âThatâs not what I asked you.â
Paige shrugged, folding the newspaper in half and putting it on her lap. âWhich one do you like?â
Azzi flipped through a few pages before she landed on the one that caught her attention. âThis one. The pastel blue vest is nice.â
Paige leaned forward, taking another look. âAlright let me see it again.â
Azzi turned the binder back toward her and Paige pointed at the same light blue vest she had chosen two seconds ago. âI love this one,â she said grinning.
âYouâre just picking that one because I did.â
Paige didnât have any reason to deny it as she nodded. âYouâre the one wearinâ it. If you like it I love it and thatâs what you should put on.â
Azzi bit her bottom lip hard, fighting off the smile that tried to bloom. Her brown eyes stayed on Paige until her head was turned by her hairstylist.
âI want the cream pants and the light blue tweed vest,â she called out to her stylist.
Even though Azzi couldnât see the stylist nod she was already pulling the pieces off the rack. Once she saw how the two pieces complemented one another she started laying out jewelry to add to the look.
Azzi snuck a quick glance to Paige as she went back to the paper in her lap.
Once Azziâs glam was fully done a production assistant approached her with a black mic pack that they clipped to the back of her pants.Â
âAre you nervous?â Paige asked from behind Azziâs chair, sipping on a bottle of water.Â
Azzi glanced at her through the mirror. âFor what?â
Paige shrugged. âI donât know sweetheart. All the cameras, random questions, all these people buzzinâ around you like bees in a jar.â
Azzi chuckled under her breath, eyes softening a little at Paigeâs innocence about it all. âIâm used to it at this point. But I donât hate having you here to calm my nerves.â
That made Paige smile like a kid on Christmas morning.Â
In the middle of the conversation a stylist approached with some heels in her hand ready to bend down to put them on for Azzi. âYou want me toââ
âI can do it,â Paige interrupted politely, already moving in front of Azzi who had stood up to put them on herself. Azzi closed her eyes to stop her reeling brain when she saw Paige kneel in front of her, pulling the stuffing paper out of the heels. Azzi opened her mouth to say something but her voice had gone quiet so she just closed it.Â
Paige held Azziâs calf softly as she slid on the first heel, Azziâs hand coming to rest on Paigeâs shoulder to keep her balance. Her fingertips curled into the cotton of Paigeâs shirt as she held on.
Once both heels were on, Paige looked up from where she was kneeled and found Azziâs eyes already on her. Azziâs hand was still holding onto her shoulder even though both legs were even now and the physical touch along with the positioning made the air between them a little tense.
Skye cleared her throat from the other side of the room silently reminding Azzi that there were people not a part of her personal team moving around the area.
Azzi blinked and broke the stare before she straightened her posture and took a small step back, rubbing her palms on her thighs as she did. Paige stood up next, stepping back to give her more space.
Azzi turned on her heel, doing a slow spin in place, a grin forming as she looked over her shoulder. âWell how do I look?â
Paige grinned, tilting her head as she "assessed" Azziâs outfit. âFolks at GMA donât know their morninâs about to be graced by an angel.â
Azziâs face and neck warmed as she dropped her chin, trying to hide her smile behind her hand. âStop,â she mumbled under her breath, laughing as she turned away from Paige.Â
âIâm serious.â
âAzzi, cameras are ready,â Skye said as she ran through a list in her head before Azzi walked out.Â
Azzi nodded as she started walking to the door but she realized halfway there her phone was still in her hand. She turned around and took a few quick steps back to Paige. âCan you hold this for me please?â
Paige took and slid it into her pocket. âGood luck out there.â
Azzi smiled and gave Paige a quick wink before she was turning around and walking through the door. Rolling her shoulders back as she got herself ready to be in front of a camera.Â
As soon as Azziâs segment started it was clear she was someone born to be in front of a camera. She was a natural in every sense; poised without being stiff and full of charisma that made even the scripted moments feel personal. Her energy was just always contagious, allowing her to make the most polished sets feel warm and personal.
One of the hosts smiled, turning toward her. âSo, first of all, Azzi, what a season. Youâve been everywhere lately, and your rookie season was just absolutely incredible. Whatâs been the biggest lesson or takeaway for you this year?â
Azzi nodded as she listened, her fingers laced in her lap. âHonestlyâŚI think this season just taught me how to lead in a new way. Not just on the court, but off of it. Iâm not the loudest in a room but there were moments where I had to trust my voice more, learn how to balance being present for my team while also protecting myself and what I needed.â
The other host chimed in, âAnd physically, I mean wow, you looked stronger than ever. As a rookie you were out there giving vets what you guys like to call, âwelcome to the league moments.â How are you feeling now?â
Azzi chuckled. âI feel good. Tired but in the best way. I gave everything I had to the season because thatâs really the only way I know how to play.â
âFair enough,â the host said. âSo how did you wind down after it was all wrapped up? We see you everywhere these days doing events left and right. How do you recharge?â
Azziâs smile was completely genuine and natural from this question. âI actually spent some time out of the city,â she said âIt was amazingâŚa sort of reset from the rest of the world. Definitely something Iâm going to try to do more often.â
âOh? What was your favorite part?â
There was a pause before she answered, her brain naturally going one direction before she had to pivot to a PR response. âI, uhâŚI learned Iâm actually kind of good at riding a horse,â she said, laughing a little. âSo thatâs definitely something I plan on doing again.â
Behind the cameras, Paige leaned against a wall with her arms crossed. When Azzi said that she grinned a little from the corner of her mouth, as she stored that new information away. Skye, who was standing nearby glanced at Paige but didnât say anything.
The segment wrapped with a few more light questions. Azzi talked about how the fans in Dallas had immediately shown up for her, how the city had embraced her like one of its own. They touched on the community, the culture, the energy on game days and the new facility. She grinned when one of the anchors joked about the crowd chanting her name.
âWe hear them every game,â Azzi said. âAnd I hear them. I really do. That kind of love sticks with you.â
âClearly, Dallas is lucky to have you,â the host said as the segment began to fade out. âWeâll all be watching next season. Donât keep us waiting too long.â Azzi gave the camera a smile and wave until they cut to another segment.
She stepped out of frame, relaxing her posture now that she was off air. Azzi saw Paige standing near the walk and started walking toward her.
Paige grinned and opened her mouth and Azzi just knew she was about to say something charming but she had to reach her hand out quickly to pause her.
âWait hold on,â Azzi said, brushing her fingers over the mic still clipped to her vest. She turned toward one of the crew members nearby and pointed at the mic with an apologetic smile. âCan you take this off for me?â
They nodded, stepping forward to unclip the mic for her, coiling the wire and grabbing the transmitter. Once it was off Azzi turned back toward Paige and guided her back toward her glam room away from the buzz of the set.
She shut the door behind them and as soon as she sat on the couch she was pulling off her heels. Paige sat in the armchair across from spreading her legs to get comfortable. When she smiled at Azzi, Azziâs face mirrored herself immediately. âCan I flirt with you now?â
The door cracked open again and Skye slipped in. Her expression said enough for Azzi before she even spoke.
Azzi groaned and tipped her head back in frustration. Not only from interruption but whatever she knew was about to come out of Skyeâs mouth. âWhat is it,â she said flatly.
âI moved around the shoot for the new jerseys and your endorsement recordings,â Skye said, walking further into the room.
âButâŚ?â
Skye gave her a look that just almost passed for apologetic if Azzi hadnât known her since college. âBut youâre going to have to take Aziahaâs place at the event tonight. She canât make it, and they need someone from the team to show face.â
Azzi rubbed her temples. âWhat kind of event?â
âSome league dinner thing. Media, sponsors, donors. Just the usual buttoned up crowd. You wonât have to stay long. Literally just wave at the camera when they mention the Wings, eat dinner and you can go. They just need someone there.â She paused, then added, âPreferably someone who didnât have a negative plus minus this season, so...â
Azzi laughed under her breath. âYouâre shady.â
Skye lifted her hands. âJust the messenger.â
Azzi sighed, leaning further into the couch like the weight of her day was starting to press on her like always. âWhat time is the event?â
âCarpet starts around 7:30. You donât need to show up until eight,â Skye said, flipping to a page in her planner. âIâll have glam come to your place around six-thirty so you donât have to travel.â
Azzi nodded, already mentally shifting her schedule. âPaige needs styling.â
Paige looked completely caught off guard. âWait, excuse me darlinâ?â
Azzi turned to her. âYouâre coming with me to the event.â
Paige sat up a little straighter, the corners of her mouth twitching because she wasnât sure if she wanted to argue or smile. âYou donât need to worry about puttinâ clothes on me.â
Azzi tilted her head playfully. âPaige you didnât bring anything other than flannels, carhartt shirts, and white tees.â
Paige grinned as she thought about it. âOk thatâs fair.â
Skye stopped herself from laughing, tapping a note into her phone. âIâll make sure styling brings some options for her. Paige, how tall are you?â
Paige glanced at her. ââRound 6'1.â
Skye didnât look up from her planner as she said, âMmm. 6â1s tall.â She looked up pointedly at Azzi.
Azzi rolled her eyes, catching the implication but choosing not to dignify it.
âAlright like I said, Iâll have glam come to the loft around six-thirty. Actually Iâm going to do six to give them some extra time. The car will be there by seven thirty, seven fourty-ish to give you time to pull up right at eight.â As she started heading for the door Skye added one more thing, âAnd Azzi donât disappear before then. They already have your name on the lineup.â
Azzi waved her hand. âYeah alright Iâm not going anywhere.â
âAlright,â Skye said, halfway out the door. âIâll talk to you tonight.â
Once the door shut behind her, Azzi let her head fall back against the couch and she let out a long sigh. Paige reached over and tapped her knee gently. âStill glad you brought me along?âÂ
Azzi cracked one of her eyes open, grinning despite her slight frustration. âAsk me again after I see what they dress you in.â
When Paige and Azzi stepped outside, Texas was starting to warm the pavement. The front of the studio had a small group of fans gathered behind a yellow tape barrier, a few holding signs while others started recording as soon as they saw Azzi.
Azzi paused next to Paige nodding toward them. âIâm just gonna go sign a few things.â
âGo ahead. Iâll get the truck.â
Paige walked off with Azziâs bag just as the valet pulled up with the truck. The fansâ eyes briefly followed her before they returned their attention to Azzi.
As Azzi started signing things and taking pictures Paige leaned against the passenger door with her arms crossed. She looked up toward the sky trying to get some of the sun sheâd been missing, content when she felt it warming her face. Â
A few fans caught onto her being there with Azzi and discreetly angled their phones toward her. When Azzi finished speaking to everyone she gave the group a quick wave before she walked toward the truck. Paige opened the door for her, of course holding out her hand to help her get in. Azzi took it and stepped in mumbled a shy, âthank you,â holding Paigeâs arm for balance.Â
By the time the truck pulled off, the internet and fans had already done what they do best.
[X/Twitter Post - @/hoopstarzdaily] đš| Azzi Fudd stopped to sign for fans outside the Dallas News studio this morning but who's that mystery girl helping her get in the truck? đđ
đŹ @/depressedwingsfan whatâs the sayingâŚsave a horse, ride a cowboy đ
đŹ @/azfuddfan35 hold onnnn wasnât she just on live TV talking about how she just learned how to ride a horse?? let me find out đ
Inside the truck, Paige had one hand loosely on the wheel as they pulled away from the studio. âYou gonna let me put some food in your stomach, sweetheart?â
Azzi turned to look at Paige. âYou feeding me now?â
âI mean,â Paige shrugged, grinning, âI did just wake up at 4AM for you. Feels like the least you could do is let me feed you.â
âThat logicâs questionable but ok.â After scrolling for a few minutes Azzi tapped on a spot and the car's map rerouted. âIâve been craving this place.â
Paige checked the screen and nodded.
It only took a few more minutes before Paige was pulling into a small local spot with an outdoor walk up window. When they got their food in to-go containers Paige turned toward Azzi. âYou mind if we eat out back?â she asked, nodding toward the truck bed. âKinda miss beinâ out in the sun.â
Azzi looked amused at the concept of missing the Texas sun. âYeah of course but you say that like youâve been trapped underground for six years.â
Paige just grinned and popped the tailgate open. âNot underground. Just inside too long.â
She hopped into the trunk bed first putting the food down before she turned around to help Azzi step up. Azzi hesitated for a quick second, feeling like a damsel in Paigeâs presence before remembering she was an athlete. She grabbed Paigeâs hand and let her guide her up before settling next to her to open their food containers.Â
The bed of the truck was warm underneath them after being hit by the Texas sun. The two of them always started in a quiet limbo so Azzi leaned back as she ate, enjoying the warmth hitting her skin. Paige was next to her with her shoes off and her long legs stretched out. She was as comfortable here as sheâd be anywhere.
The city rarely let Azzi breathe. Being here usually meant constant movement for her. Always somewhere to be, someone to call, things to check off. Her days sped by her in 2x speed, her life pulled along by a current whether she was ready or not. But sitting in the back of the pickup truck with Paige next to her made everything feel still. Like the city had pressed pause for her so she could take a breath. So she could glide with the current instead of being consumed by it.Â
Azzi didnât know how Paige did it. How she made her feel so calm, subtly anchoring her to moments without being obvious about it. Azzi hadnât even realized how tense sheâd been until her shoulders relaxed when she felt the sun, how tight her chest felt until it eased open just from being around Paige.
The thought that Paige would be gone soon drifted to her consciousness. That sheâd be right back to being everywhere and nowhere at once. Azzi shoved the thought aside before it could take shape.
She took another bite of her food before she glanced sideways. âSoâŚâ she said, casually, âis this a date?â
Paige turned her head toward Azzi grinning at the question as she wiped her mouth with a napkin. âYou think Iâd take you on a date and make you eat in the back of a pickup truck?â
Azzi laughed. âI mean you did pay for both of us.â
âThatâs just manners.â Paige said, leaning back on her palms. âIf this were a date, Iâd be a whole lot more respectful.â
Azziâs eyebrow arched, a little curious now. âRespectful?â
âYeah. Iâd pick you up properly, have some nice flowers for you, take you somewhere nice.â
âOhh, so flowers are mandatory for our first date?â
âAbsolutely,â Paige said, with a smile on her face at Azziâs implication of their absolutely being a first date. âBig, bright ones too. Not those sad grocery store bouquets.â
Azzi laughed quietly as she went back to eating. Paige had finished already but she waited patiently for Azzi to finish her food.
When Azzi was done she wiped her hands before laying her head on Paigeâs shoulder. âIs this okay?â Azzi asked softly. Her tone was a little unsure.
Paige angled her head toward Azzi. ââCourse it is, sweetheart.â
They sat like that for a while, letting the sun warm their skin as the occasional car flew past. The moment felt like being outside of time, the world continuing on without them.
âCan I be honest with you?â
Paige nodded once. âAlways.â
Azzi hesitated before just deciding to be honest, realizing there was no need to be overly polished. âI have feelings for you.â
âItâs weird,â she added quickly, not looking at Paige yet. âI mean I know we talk a lot but weâve physically spent less than a week together. Thatâs not usually how I operate. I donât do fast or feelings reallyâŚâ
Paige looked down at her. âYouâre not the only one feelinâ it. You know how I am. I take my time, move slow and let the world move around me.â She smiled in the middle of her words. âBut you make my heart race like nobodyâs business.â
Azzi let out a short laugh, the slight weight of the moment breaking to let some light in. âYouâre such an old lady,â she teased, bumping her shoulder against Paigeâs.
Paige laughed too, making her head tip back. âExcuse me for beinâ old school. What yaâll like to say these days? You want me to have some more rizz?â
Azzi burst out laughing. âYou have plenty, no need to ever say that again.â
Paige grinned. âWhat? You donât like it?â
âNot even a little bit,â Azzi teased, still laughing.
âTough crowd.â Paige said, chuckling as she took a sip of her water.
They talked a little longer the conversation wondering to random topics until Paige stretched out her legs and looked over at Azzi again. âCâmon,â she said gently, nudging her knee. âWe should head back. I gotta take care of your car before it gets too late.â
Azzi stood up with her cup in her hand. She sipped from her straw as she said, âYou sure you donât wanna let a real mechanic handle it?â
âI am a real mechanic, sweetheart. Just donât charge you hourly.â
Azzi shook her head, smiling as she let Paige help her down.
They made a quick stop at an AutoZone on the way back to Azziâs place so Paige could grab a few things she needed. When they got back to Azziâs building, Paige didnât bother heading upstairs. She pulled into one of Azzi's designated garage spots and turned off the engine.
âYou donât want to change first?â Azzi asked as she stepped out of the truck.
Paige shut her door and moved to the truck bed to grab the toolbox and two jacks tucked in the weatherproof container. âI get the feeling if I go up there, Iâll get distracted.â
Azzi crossed her arms, leaning against the truck. âSo Iâll just stand here quietly then.â
Paige smirked, shaking her head as she circled back to the driverâs side. She pulled the door open and leaned in to turn the truck back on. âYou can sit in there looking pretty and play some nice music for us,â she offered over her shoulder.
Paige stepped back from the truck and peeled off her white tee leaving her in a tank top. She held the shirt out toward Azzi who had just gotten settled into the driverâs seat. âAnd you can hold this for safekeepinâ too.â
Azzi took it from her with a smirk. âMmm. You just like having me hold your stuff.â
âCanât think of anyone better.â
Paige jacked up the car before sliding jack stands in place for support. She grabbed the closed lid pan and slid underneath the car to unbolt the drain plug letting the old oil stream out.
Azzi had her legs crossed in the driverâs seat, watching Paige with satisfaction even though she had no idea what was being done underneath the car.Â
âYou know sweetheart,â Paigeâs voice echoed under the car, âthereâs somethinâ I could use some help with.â
âOh? You want me to get under there with you? Risk my whole outfit?â
There was a laugh from underneath the car before Paigeâs voice came again. âJust need you to hand me that new oil filter I got at the store.â
Azzi hopped out of the truck and grabbed the new oil filter, crouching down to pass it to her. Paigeâs fingers brushed Azziâs as she took it making sure she didnât get any oil on her. When she slid from under the car, she had a streak of grime on her forearm and a light sheen of sweat across her collarbone.
Azzi blinked a few times. Paige wiped her hands on a rag without looking up. âYouâre starinâ,â she said, not needing to see the expression on Azziâs face to know it. Azzi folded her arms, trying to play it off. âIâm just making sure you did it right.â
âSs that what youâre callinâ it?â Paige grinned, tossing the rag down before she picked up the fresh oil to refill it. ââM just sayin. Ainât nobody ever looked at me changinâ oil like I was out here modeling for one of your magazines.â
âNow that you mention it, Iâd probably thoroughly enjoy that.â
Paige paused when she processed what Azzi meant. She couldnât do anything but shake her head as she capped the oil and moved on to the tires.
She made quick work of loosening the lugs and getting the tires rotated. Instead of getting back in the driverâs seat Azzi was leaning on the truck and she caught herself chewing on her bottom lip as she watched more often than not.
By the time Paige lowered the car back down and stood up, brushing her hands on her pants, Azziâs eyes were a little dazed.
âYou alright over there, sweetheart?â
Azzi smiled as she trailed her eyes up to meet Paigeâs. âIâm definitely more than alright.â
Paige turned around to hide the heat rising to her cheeks as she leaned down to grab the new windshield wipers she got. Once she got the color of her cheeks back to normal she said, âCâmere,â nodding toward the front of the car. âWanna show you how to do this part.â
Azzi pushed off the truck and walked over, standing next to Paige as she pulled the blade so it sat straight up.
âSo,â Paige said, motioning toward the hook and latch setup, âthis part right here? Thatâs what locks the blade onto the arm. All you really gotta do is pull down gently and itâll slide right odd.â She demonstrated slowly, releasing the clip with her thumb and sliding the old blade off. Azzi watched before Paige gestured to the other side.
âAlright. Your turn.â
Azzi stepped around to the other side, carefully lifting the arm of the other wiper. She copied what Paige did, pressing the latch, but the blade didnât budge. âItâs stuck,â she mumbled.
Paige came up next to her to fold her warm over Azziâs. âHere,â she said, guiding her fingers down a little lower. âYou gotta press right here. Feel that little give when you press in?â
Azzi nodded and with Paigeâs help, the old blade slipped free.
Paige grinned. âYouâre a natural.â She handed her the new blade. âSlide it up this time, put it under the hook first, just like I showed you and youâll hear it click into place.â
Azzi lined it up and pushed up gently. It resisted for a second before she used a little more force and it clicked into place.
âThere you go.â Paige tapped the hood of the car. âWipers are officially brand new.â
Paige put everything away before they headed upstairs. The elevator barely closed behind them in the apartment when Azzi heard Paige say something about needing a shower as she headed toward the guest room. Azzi smiled to herself, still faintly buzzed off the sight of Paige under her car.
Azzi was getting water from the kitchen when she heard someone knock on her door. Azzi was confused as she walked to the door and looked through the peephole. âWhat the hell.â She pulled the door open to see Caroline standing there.Â
Caroline stepped into the apartment, âI was in the neighborhood and I figured we could go get drinks or something. Iâve been so bored.â
Azzi forced a smile, stepping aside to let her in. âYeah, umâŚyou couldâve texted.â
Caroline dropped her bag on the island, but her movements slowed down the more her eyes scanned the room making her eyebrows crease. She saw Paigeâs white tee and flannel from last night thrown over the back of the chair. Her gaze shifted again and paused when she saw another white tee on the island, Paigeâs Von Dutch hat on top of it. Then she processed the sound of the water coming from the guest bathroom. She looked back at Azzi slowly. âDo you have company?â
Azzi blinked. âWhat? No..I meanâŚyes, butââ She cleared her throat, trying to make it sound light. âYeah. Just Paige.â
Both of Caroline's eyebrows shot up. âLike blonde country girl with the farm? That Paige?â
Azzi gave a small nod, hoping her expression stayed unreadable. âYeah. Sheâs visiting for the weekend.â
âI didnât know yâall kept in touch,â Caroline said.
âWe did,â Azzi said, then added a little quickly, âI mean we do. Just here and there, you know.â
Caroline hummed, still not moving. âRightt.â
Azzi glanced down the hall, pulse skipping a little at the thought of Paige stepping out of the guest room unaware that Azzi had company. She turned back to Caroline, suddenly very antsy.
âListen, I would love to catch up Car,â she said, walking toward the front door, âbut weâre probably about to just take a nap. Itâs been a long day and I have an event later.â
âYâall already ate?â
âYeah,â Azzi said, hand already holding the doorknob. âAnd you know how she is, early riser, early sleeper. Farmer stuff. Probably needs a nap before later.â
Caroline laughed under her breath. âMmhm. Right farmer stuff.â
Azzi held the door open, giving her the most gracious please-please-leave-before-she-walks-out-in-a-towel look she could muster.
Caroline grabbed her bag. âWell, alright then. Tell Farmer Paige I said hi.â
âI will,â Azzi said, gently nudging her out.
âAnd maybe next time Iâll text first. Seems youâll be a little more private these days,â Caroline said, stepping into the hallway.
âMaybe. I love you, Iâll call you tomorrow," Azzi said, closing the door the moment Caroline was out of sight.
About five minutes later Paige stepped out of the guest room, tugging on a fresh shirt when she saw Azzi scrolling through movie options on the TV.Â
âYou donât even like romcoms,â Paige said as she walked toward the couch.
âI never said that.â
âYou implied it. Twice. Just last week actually.â
Azzi shrugged. âMaybe I was lying to save face.â
Paige sat down as they tried to find a movie to turn on. It only took a few minutes, and Azzi pouting at Paige for the first time for the blonde to cave and let Azzi pick some cheesy movie.Â
They ended up laying on the couch, with the lights turned off and a soft throw blanket spread across both of their laps. They werenât cuddling, exactly but they werenât far from it either.
When a particularly cheesy scene played, Azzi turned her head to catch Paige trying not to laugh.
âYouâre not gonna cry, are you?â Azzi teased.
âNot unless the dog dies.â
âMm. You sure? Thought I saw a little lip quiver over there.â
âIâll throw this pillow at you sweetheart.â
Azzi smirked. âNo you wouldnât.â
The banter faded as their attention went back to the movie, a shared smile spreading between them. Azzi fell asleep for maybe twenty minutes at one point during the movie and when she woke up the movieâs final act was picking up. Azziâs fingers found a loose thread on the throw blanket and absentmindedly twisted it between her fingers to keep herself awake, occasionally brushing against Paigeâs knee.Â
Paige looked down when she noticed her moving and whispering, âHey sleepy head.â
Azzi smiled to herself but didnât say anything.
As soon as the credits rolled there was a gentle knock on Azziâs door.Â
Azzi pushed herself upright to turn on the light. âThatâs probably glam.â
Paige stayed reclined with her arms crossed behind her head as Azzi walked off to open the door.Â
âŚ
When everything was up and running the room smelled like setting spray and the flat irons as R&B music filtering through the room. Azzi was sitting comfortably in one of her chairs with her phone in one hand as she scrolled through instagram as a stylist carefully straightened her edges.
She didnât look up until one of the stylists helping Paige came around the corner and called out playfully, âYour blondieâs hard to please Azzi.â
Azzi looked up from her phone with a smile. âWhatâs wrong?â
âShe thinks all the tailored pants are âtoo tight,ââ the stylist said, laughing a little. âLike, maâam. Thatâs what tailored pants are supposed to do.â
Azzi laughed, putting her phone down for a second as she turned her attention to the rolling rack nearby. âLet me see the options.â
The stylist started showing her a few pants she was considering and when she was done Azzi said, âLet me see those black Louis Vuitton ones. Third hanger in.â
The stylist passed them to her and Azzi held them up by the waistband, folding them to inspect the ankles before saying, âShe should be fine with these.â
The stylist took them from her. âThatâs what you think.â
Azzi laughed. âJust tell her I like them if she argues.â
The stylist was walking back around the corner. âOop. Say less.â
Azzi leaned back in her chair as the makeup artist started on her eyeliner, a small grin still on her face as she imagined Paige standing in the other room probably judging the pants for being two centimeters too short. Somehow, it only made Azzi more endeared.
As glam was wrapping up Azzi was standing up as the stylists were making small final tweaks to her black dress. She adjusted the delicate drape across her chest so enough cleavage showed without doing too much. Her straightened hair was swept to one side so they could put a simple tennis necklace around her neck to rest against her collarbone.
When they were done Azzi glanced in the mirror and gave a satisfied nod.
A few steps behind her, the sound of shoes echoed against the floor.
Paige was walking around the corner with the black Louis Vuitton, a button up tucked in neatly, the first two buttons left open. Her hair was down in natural waves, and a tennis necklace also rested around her neck. She tugged at one of the sleeve cuffs as she walked in, adjusting it distractedly until her eyes landed on Azzi.
She froze for a second. Blinked once a little quickly. Then again, slower.
âWell, damnâŚâ Paige said under her breath, catching herself and standing up a little straighter, clearing her throat. âI meanâsorry. Um. You lookâŚwow.â
Azzi didnât turn around from the mirror right away. She just smirked faintly at her through the mirror. âYou like?â
Paige laughed, hand rubbing the back of her neck as she stepped closer. âSweetheart, Iâm tryinâ real hard to be respectful right now, but youâre makinâ it near impossible.â
Azzi turned around after hearing that, deeply enjoying the effect she was having on her. Paigeâs eyes were locked on her face and only her face as if that was the only safe place for her to look. Even then, Azzi caught the subtle dilation in Paigeâs blue eyes, that faint darkness around the iris that gave her away. The corner of Azziâs mouth twitched as she took a step closer.
Paige held her ground but her eyes fluttered closed when Azziâs perfume consumed her space.
Azzi reached up to âfixâ Paigeâs collar. Making sure she didnât break eye contact as she did it, her makeup casting a soft smokiness over her eyes, making them look deeper. Paige took a deep breath as her eyes finally swept down Azziâs figure before snapping back up to look somewhere over Azziâs shoulder, trying to pretend she wasnât spiraling a little.
âYou smell amazing, darlinâ,â Paige murmured.
Azzi smiled at the compliment before she mercifully took a step back, easing the tension for both of them. Her eyes dropped as she let herself take in Paigeâs full look. The black Louis Vuitton fit her just right, and the hem of the pants sat perfectly over the Prada shoes that gave Paige a few extra inches, still leaving her taller than Azzi even with heels on.
âYou clean up nice, country girl,â she said as she walked away to grab her clutch off the island.
Paige blinked and her eyes couldnât help but trail after her, and when Azzi turned around again, she caught her. Paige tried to look away, but it was too late.
Azzi stopped herself from grinning, the tip of her tongue brushing the inside of her cheek. âYou gonna make it through the night?â
Paige let out a breathy laugh and exhaled hard. âIâm sorry sweetheart,â she said genuinely, a little embarrassed. âI really am tryinâ to be respectful.â
Azzi crossed the short distance between them. âItâs fine,â she clarified, dropping her gaze to Paigeâs lips for a second. âI like it.â
Paige stood still like Azzi had just flipped the table on her and she had no idea what to do with her hands so she put them in her pockets.
Somewhere down the hall, someone called out to let Azzi know the car was here for them.
Azzi walked ahead of Paige, swaying her hips a little more than usual. Paige swallowed harshly, shaking her head to herself as she mumbled, âLord please have mercy.â
âŚ
Luckily for Azzi, Skye hadnât exaggerated. It really was just a league dinner. Azzi didnât have to give any speeches or red carpet interviews, just smile for the usual cameras.
Azzi stepped out of the black SUV by herself, pausing at the designated photo line. The lights flashed like usual, the photographers called her name, and she smiled just enough to get through it without looking bored before she was able to duck past the ropes.
Someone from the venue had already come to escort Paige to the ballroom when they got there. Paige didnât look like she belonged in an event like this. She was too composed for such a high networking event that had everyone else a little on edge, but at the same time, she looked good amongst everyone. So good that occasionally people walking past did a double take.
By the time Azzi made it to the ballroom, Paige was already at their table, observing the people around the room.
When Paige saw Azzi approaching the table she stood up to pull Azziâs chair out for her.Â
Azzi smiled and said, âThank you.â Smoothing out the front of her dress before sitting down.
Paige helped slide her chair in before she moved to sit back in her own chair.
Across from them Curt and the new head coach of the Wings were talking. Azziâs smile thinned slightly as she acknowledged them with a nod making sure she offered enough to seem politeâbut not enough to invite real conversation. She could feel Paige glance at her, picking up on the shift in her energy.
Once the quick greetings were over and Azzi had given the required âItâs good to see you again,â Azzi turned her attention back to Paige.
She leaned a little closer toward her so nobody else could hear. âPlease tell me you already figured out the sweet treats they have.â
Paige grinned, dipping her head toward Azziâs ear. âThereâs a chocolate mousse situation on the corner table. I even saw they had some nutella for your strawberries.â
Azzi laughed, easing back in her seat. âSee, thatâs why I brought you.â
Paige got a little closer, lips barely brushing the shell of Azziâs ear. âThat the only reason?â
Azzi raised an eyebrow at the comment, turning to look at Paige closely. âFor now.â
Paige tapped her finger against the table, trying to look unaffected. âIâll take that.â
âGood evening, everyone,â someone greeted through the mic with a polished voice. âWeâre honored to be joined tonight by some of Dallasâ finest across leagues, sports, and generations.â
A few polite claps followed as he began listing notable attendees. âRepresenting FC Dallas, we have Luciana Acosta,â the list went on with cameras panning to different tables, each athlete smiling like they were supposed to.
When the camera shifted towards the Wings table, the hostâs voice got a little more upbeat. âAnd gracing us tonight with her presence tonight, fresh off an incredible season, we have the lovely Rookie of the Year from the Dallas Wings Azzi Fudd.â
Azziâs expression didnât falter at the compliment. She offered a dimpled smile and a quick wave to the nearest camera lens, the roomâs applause getting a little louder for her. The camera lingered before panning away to another table.
âYou always make it look easy,â Paige whispered so she didnât interrupt the evening.
Azzi smiled. âSomeone has to.â
Not long after the host spoke, waitstaff started gliding between tables, with trays of red and white wine, champagne, or sparkling water for guests.
One of them stepped toward their table, offering Paige a glass of white wine. She reached for it out of politeness, but Azzi caught the serverâs attention politely.
âWould it be possible to swap that for a beer?â Azzi asked with a warm smile.
The waiter nodded. âOf course. Do you have a preference?â
âDo you have Lone Star?â
The server gave an apologetic shake of his head. âNo maâam, but we do have Shiner Bock, Modelo, and Stella.â
Azzi nodded once. âUmm letâs go with a Shiner Bock please.â
âComing right up,â he said, disappearing with Paigeâs untouched wine.
Paige leaned back in her chair, doing an awful job at hiding her grin. âYou didnât have to do that.â
âI know,â Azzi said casually, nudging a piece of unseasoned carrot with her fork.
Paige leaned in to whisper. âPromise Iâll take you to get some real food after this.â
That got a quiet laugh from Azzi as the server returned, setting the cold beer in front of Paige. Paige gave him a small nod. âThank you, I appreciate it.â
She took a swig of it before tilting it toward Azzi. Azzi gave her a look shaking her head no.Â
âYou sure? This oneâs a little sweeter. Has a small taste of caramel youâd like.â
âWeâve been over this.â
Paige gave her a boyish grin, that was a little too charming to say no to. âThis oneâs different, I swear.â
âPaige,â Azzi warned with no real backbone.
Paigeâs blue eyes sparkled as she said, âYes, darlinâ?â
Azzi rolled her eyes but reached for the bottle anyway. She took a small skeptical sip. When the taste hit her tongue it was more gentle than she expected and for once she didnât make a face. She passed it back. âOkay. That one wasnât that bad.â
Paige grinned like she won a bet. âKnew you had a little Texas in you.â
Azzi snorted. âYouâre so lucky youâre on my good side.â
Paige lifted the beer in a toast to herself. âTo luck, then.â
Azzi glanced around, noticing the shift in the environment as guests started mingling with each other with the cocktail hour. âYou wanna do the whole schmooze and smile thing?â she asked.
Paige stood up, offering her hand to help Azzi stand. âNot even a little.â
âGood. Letâs go before somebody tries to corner me into talking about sponsoring the team.â
âToo late,â Paige mumbled, subtly tilting her head toward a man in a navy suit who was eyeing them from his table across the room.
Azzi followed her gaze and unfortunately made direct eye contact with him. She snapped her attention away as soon as she saw him and wrapped her fingers tighter around Paigeâs. âAlright weâre leaving,â she said as they slipped toward the exit.Â
When they got back to Azziâs place, Azzi barely had time to take off her heels before Paige was grabbing the truck keys off the counter so they could go get some food. Azzi smiled and let Paige carry her to the truck after insisting they didnât have time for Azzi to put on her shoes until she got in the car. Â
They pulled into a late night fast food spot with a glowing sign and no line. Azzi wanted to eat in the truck bed again so Paige laid down a blanket that was kept tucked behind the seat considering the cost of the clothes they had on.
They ate out of the paper bags and laughed at shit that wasnât even funny. Occasionally Paige would have to reach over and push Azziâs hair out of her face when a warm breeze would push past them.
Once the food was gone and the night was starting to get a little cooler, they climbed down and drove back to Azziâs apartment in silence. Azzi leaned on Paige the entire drive back as she watched the city speed by.
When they got back the apartment was dim, the evening winding down naturally.
âGoodnight,â Paige said at the guestroom hall, already unbuttoning her shirt.
Azzi smiled at her as she walked toward her room. âGoodnight, P.â
Paige disappeared into the guest room and Azzi into hers. They both showered, slipped into something softer, and fell into their beds. They were exhausted in that oddly peaceful way.
Azzi laid on her back with one arm folded under her head, eyes wide open in the dark.
It had been maybe 45 minutes but the room felt too quiet. The noise of the day had faded into silence. No more laughter echoing around them from the truck bed, no Paige teasing her over trying to steal her last fry when in reality Azzi couldâve just taken it. Just complete stillness. The kind of stillness Azzi wouldâve killed for any other day but today it felt like a hole that Paige had carved only for her to fill.
Azzi turned, letting the cool sheets brush over her skin like they always did. But they felt colder tonight so she forced herself to stop moving and closed her eyes. The day played on a loop behind her eyelids, warming her up from the inside.Â
It had been a long time since Azzi felt this warm. She felt it lingering her chest, replacing the parts of her where things tended to stay locked up, shelved behind sarcasm and distractions. She looked over at the pillow next to her. It laid flat and undisturbed like always. She exhaled through her nose and turned onto her side, curling into herself like she could make the space feel smaller.
The longer she laid there, the more she realized she didnât want the night to end like this. Not with her here and Paige just across the hall. Not with all these feelings left suspended between them.
She was about to get up when she heard a soft knock at her door. She slid out of bed faster than she could think, her feet hitting the floor before her brain processed the sound. When she pulled it open she saw Paige standing there looking a little unsure. There was something hesitant about her posture, the way her weight shifted on her feet like she was second guessing herself in real time.
Azzi saw the uncertainty and decided to speak first. âHey. You okay?â
âYeah, I justââ Her voice caught, and she stopped speaking all together, eyes flicking toward the floor. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to disturb your sleep, sweetheart.â She turned around like she planned to walk away, but Azziâs hand reached to catch her wrist. Paige stopped moving when she felt Azzi grab her and turned back around letting out a sigh. âHey,â she tried again.
Azzi smiled at her. âHi.â
Paige glanced at her, then dropped her gaze. âI couldnât sleep again,â she admitted. âI was hopinâ youâd be on the couch again but you werenât.â
âI wasnât,â Azzi replied softly, still holding her hand.
Paige nodded like she understood, but then added, âI justâŚI remembered how you like to talk at night. How that one time you made me stay on the phone with you for hours âcause you didnât wanna be alone.â
Azzi tilted her head slightly, biting her cheek so she didnât smile. âYou came to my room at one in the morning just to talk?â
There was a pause, filled with the tension that had been hovering between something old and something dangerously close to new. Paige grinned, as she said, âI promise thatâs all it is.â
âThatâs the problem,â Azzi teased, before interlacing her fingers with Paigeâs and gently pulling her into the room. She shut the door behind them and led her toward the bed, the ambient light spilling through the windows brushing her tan skin in gold and shadows. Paige looked around like she needed something to focus on, âThis feels a little more tense than just talkinâ, darlinâ.â
âThatâs because your headâs in the gutter,â Azzi said without looking toward her.
That earned her a crooked smile from Paige, who said nothing as Azzi climbed into the bed first, settling on her side. Paige followed her lead, lying on her back next to her with both hands tucked behind her head.
There was a few minutes of comfortable silence between them; comfortable, warm even. Azzi's gaze wandered across the angles of Paigeâs face, the way the light danced over her sharp jaw, the slight part in her lips, the rise and fall of her chest. Paigeâs eyes flicked toward her, a small smile twitching at her lips when she caught her looking.
âSo what do you wanna talk about?â Paige asked.
Azzi, making a habit of not answering Paigeâs questions, just kept looking at her. Like she was trying to configure if Paige being here was real or some scene she was drawing up from her imagination. But then their eyes locked again, and the moment bent a little in her chest letting her know it was in fact real. .
âMaybe letâs talk about what you lookinâ at me like that means,â Paige added.
Azzi's voice was quiet when she answered. âIt means what Iâve been telling you all weekend.â
Paige shifted her arm and brought her hand up to gently brush the side of Azziâs face, keeping her fingertips gentle against her delicate skin, reverent in the way she traced the line of her cheek. âYouâre the most beautiful woman Iâve ever laid my eyes on, Azzi.â
âYou canât say things like that to a woman youâre refusing to kiss.â
Paigeâs thumb paused at her jaw, her smile tugging back in. âIâm not refusinâ,â she whispered. âIâm just tryinâ to make sure when I do it, itâs not âcause youâre tired, or lonely, or layinâ in the dark. I want it to count for somethinâ more than that.â
Azzi stared at her, struck by the softness in Paigeâs voice. âI want it to be somethinâ you want all the time and not just sometimes sweetheart.â
They were simple words. Not overly poetic or dressed up in metaphors and similes like writers like to do. Just simple words that she wanted Azzi to understand.
Yet, they made Azzi feel like her whole body was slowly being set alight. Her skin prickled with awareness, a hum starting deep in her core and rising like static to her chest, her neck, the tips of her fingers. It was the warmth sheâd been craving for years and when she found it there was tension under it, that craved her just as much..
Paige wasnât just saying she wanted to kiss her. She was telling Azzi she could, right now, easily. But she wouldnât until Azzi was sure. It was juvenile, in theory. The idea of aching just to be kissed. But Azzi couldnât remember the last time something as simple as anticipation made her feel this shaken.
She could feel her heart pounding not just in her chest, but in her throat, behind her knees, between her legs. Her whole body was suddenly aware of Paige. How she sounded, smelled, the heat always radiating off of her like temptation. LIke the apple from the Garden of Eden.
Azzi swallowed, keeping her gaze on those damn blue eyes that never stopped looking at her like she was it. With a voice barely an octave above a breath, she whispered, âI need you to stop talking.â
Paige took in her appearance, the dilation in her eyes, being so in tune with the moment that she felt like she could see the nerves radiating off of Azzâs skin. âMaybe we should go to bed,â she whispered.
Azzi nodded slowly.
Paige leaned in to press a soft kiss to her forehead. âGoodnight, love.âÂ
She started to shift, getting ready to push herself up from the bed, but Azzi caught her wrist gently.
âStay?â she asked.
Paige looked down at her wordlessly asking if that was a good idea.
Azzi met her gaze and said quietly, âI donât want to be cold.â Then added quickly, âI just want to be close to you.â
Paige nodded and settled back into the bed.
âCan you hold me?â Azzi asked, more tentative than she meant to sound.
âWe can lay however you need.â
Azzi shifted closer until her head rested on Paigeâs chest, the steady beat of her heart beneath her. She slipped one leg over Paigeâs and winded her arm around her waist. Paigeâs hand found a respectful place at Azziâs hip, the warmth of her palm felt through the cotton of Azziâs shirt. âThat okay?â Paige asked, referring to her hand placement.
Azzi nodded into her chest. âYes,â she whispered. âGoodnight.â
Paige smiled, brushing her thumb gently along Azziâs side. âGoodnight, Azzi.â
With the rhythm of Paigeâs heartbeat beating calmly under her ear, Azzi let her body soften. The tightness in her chest uncoiled, thoughts quieted.Â
âŚ
Azzi woke up draped fully across Paige, both of her legs tangled around her waist and her face tucked into the curve of Paigeâs neck.Â
The buzzing of Azziâs phone was a little insistent rattling against the nightstand. Paige stirred from the sound first. âSweetheart your phoneâs ringing,â she mumbled, the rasp in her voice sending a quiet thrill through Azzi even before she was fully awake.
Azzi groaned into Paigeâs neck, reaching out blindly and fumbled for the phone. She swiped to answer without looking to see who it was.
âAzzi,â Skyeâs voice traveled through the speaker sharply and way too awake for Azziâs liking, âyouâre supposed to be at the jersey shoot in an hour. Please donât stress me out.â
Azzi blinked once, still half asleep. âOkay,â she said simply and hung up.
Calmness settled around the room again. Azzi whispered into Paigeâs skin, âWe should run away. Leave my phone behind.â
Paige let out a sleepy laugh that vibrated through her chest, arms still cradling Azzi in position. Azzi closed her eyes again, breathing in the sound of Paigeâs laugh, how she felt wrapped in her arms, how it felt to be wrapped around her scent in her own bed. Azzi silently told herself that sound was her favorite thing to hear first thing in the morning. That beautiful laugh that made her chest flutter.Â
Eventually, she sighed and reluctantly pulled herself out of the warmth theyâd made. She made sure she looked over her shoulder when she got out of bed. Paige still stretched out in her sheets, blonde hair a mess against the pillows, with an arm flung above her head shielding her blue eyes from the morning light.
Azzi took the mental picture and tucked it away somewhere private just for her.
They moved through their morning in parallel. Paige folded clothes into her duffle bag methodically, like dragging it out could delay the inevitable. Azzi blended up her smoothie in the kitchen, then made a second one, pouring it into a to-go cup Paige could take on the road.
They didnât say much as they made their way to the garage. There wasnât anything either of them knew how to say that wouldnât make it harder.
In the garage, Paige tossed her bag in the backseat of the truck before walking Azzi to her car. Azzi stood by the driverâs side with her keys in hand, chewing the inside of her cheek like she didnât trust herself to speak first.
Paige noticed like always. âCan I give you a hug?â
As soon as Azzi nodded Paige stepped into her space and wrapped her arms around her. Azzi let herself melt into it, let her face press into Paigeâs shoulder, curling her arms tight around her shoulders like she could hold time in place if she tried hard enough.Â
âYou okay?â
Azzi nodded but it was the nod you gave when you were trying to lie to yourself to feel better in a moment that felt like hell.
Paigeâs eyebrows pulled together in that gentle way she always looked at Azzi. âWhat can I do?â
âIâm not tired. Or lonely. Or laying in the dark.â
It took Paige a second to register her own words being echoed back to her but when she did she smiled. âAre you sure?â
Azzi nodded. âI wouldnât ask if I wasnât.â
Paige tilted her head, studying her features. âYou askinâ me to kiss you?â
Azzi gave the smallest smile. âI think Iâve been asking all weekend.â
That made Paige laugh under her breath. âDamn. Iâve been tryinâ to be the good guy all weekend.â
âYou still are,â Azzi said. âBut if you donât kiss me now, Iâm gonna think you donât want to.â
Paigeâs expression shifted into surprise, like the idea had never even crossed her mind. âSweetheart, Iâve wanted to kiss you since you walked out of that elevator with that gorgeous smile of yours when I first got here.â
âPlease just do it before I lose my mind then.â
For a second, neither of them moved as Paige assessed the situation. The garage around them was quiet and Azzi could hear the sound of Dallas waking up outside. It made the moment feel suspended.
Paige leaned in slowly, giving Azzi every chance she possibly could to pull back. When their lips connected there werenât sparks but they fit perfectly.
Their lips found each other like it was something they'd done in a thousand lifetimes before this one. Azziâs mouth was warm, pliant. Paige's lips tasted faintly of the smoothie Azzi had made her that morning. Sweet with cool berries and a trace of mint instead of kale. Azzi could taste the berries faintly on Paigeâs tongue when they lingered longer than planned.
Paige led the kiss while somehow letting Azzi lead. Like she was reading her in real time, adapting to her reactions and what she wanted, offering without pressing. Azzi sighed into her mouth and the kiss deepened slightly, both of them tilting their heads and swelling their tongues gently together, a moment of softness melting into the sincere ache that they each were feeling before they pulled apart.
When they separated, Paige looked at Azzi and said, âWell there goes my whole beinâ respectful plan.â
Azzi laughed under her breath. âThat was respectful,â she whispered.
âYou sure?â
Azzi leaned in again, pressing a kiss to the corner of Paigeâs mouth this time. âPositive.â
Paige grinned at the gesture. âIâm glad you opened the door last night.â
âIâm glad you knocked.â
Neither moved for a moment. Then Azziâs phone buzzed again loudly against the calmness radiating between them. It rattled against her palm reminding her of everything outside of this little bubble. Azzi silenced it without checking the screen.
They shared one more hug, longer this time before Paige opened Azziâs car door for her. Azzi gave her a soft look as she climbed in, rolling down the window.
âIâll call you tonight?â she said, like she already missed her.
Paige leaned down putting her hand on the roof of the car and gave her that easy grin. She grabbed Azziâs jaw gently kissing her one more time. âIâll call you tonight, sweetheart.ââ she said, blue eyes sparkling.
Azzi blushed as she nodded.Â
Paige winked at her and tapped the roof twice before she turned toward her truck. Azzi watched her climb in, start the engine, and drive off leaving the garage a little quieter, and Azziâs heart a little louder.

Paigeâs blonde hair was tickling Azziâs stomach, but that wasnât the problem. No, the problem was that her tongue was still nowhere near where Azzi wanted it to be. It was on her inner thighs, her hips, her pelvis - so Azzi used her hands to push Paigeâs head further down.Â
Her tongue was getting closer and closer to the desired destination. Azzi was breathing heavily. This was torture.Â
Almost there. She was almost there now. Azzi whimpered at the anticipation and squirmed. She couldnât wait any longer.Â
She felt a feather light swipe of a tongue through her folds. And then another one. Azzi gasped. Paigeâs tongue was soft and hot. Azzi impatiently pressed herself down on Paigeâs tongue and moaned loudly at the new pressure.
Everything felt so intense. She felt the pleasure move through her whole body up to her head, and out to her fingertips. She was buzzing. She was a mess.Â
All she could feel was Paigeâs tongue on her clit. And it didnât take long before she felt it building.Â
Paigeâs tongue became more and more urgent. Her lips were closing in on the sensitive nub and she was sucking, kissing, nibbling, licking, circling - driving Azzi insane.Â
And Azzi was loud. She heard herself scream out nonsense. She just wanted Paige to finish her. She felt so desperate while also never wanting it to end.Â
Inevitably, she felt herself getting closer. She was standing at the edge of the cliff, waiting for Paige to push her off into free falling. She was at the top of the rollercoaster, waiting for the drop.Â
But neither came.Â
Instead, she woke up in her bed, confused and horny.Â
Azzi looked around the room stressfully, as if she was expecting someone else to be there with her.Â
But no, she was alone.Â
She closed her eyes and sighed. She just had a wet dream about her boyfriendâs sister. How fucked up was that?Â
With a sense of shame, she carefully let her hand move down her torso to her boxers and let her fingers slide through her folds.
Soaking wet.Â
So wet that she groaned in embarrassment and smashed her face down into her pillows.Â
This was all Paigeâs fault. Azzi only dreamed that because Paigeâs ex-girlfriend was scandalously loud, and it got stuck in Azziâs head.Â
Azzi wasn't a freak. This was all Paigeâs thin walls fault. And her ex-girlfriendâs fault. But mostly just Paigeâs fault. Everyone elseâs but Azziâs fault.Â
Yet, the vivid dream replayed itself in her head. The way Paigeâs tongue had felt on her body, and immediately, Azzi felt her pussy throb. The dreamâs details were so vivid and lifelike, they blurred the line between memory and imagination, making Azzi feel like she had actually slept with her. Almost.Â
She reached over with her hand to the nightstand and shuffled through the drawer. She had brought her vibrator to Joshâs one night and kept it there.Â
Josh.Â
Azzi swallowed and turned on the vibrator on the lowest setting, not wanting Paige to hear the vibrations through the wall.Â
She tried to steer her thoughts to her boyfriend who so loyally and kindly had let her stay at his place, since he knew that Azzi had some problems at home.Â
Azzi removed her boxers beneath the covers and positioned the vibrator against her clit. She whimpered at the sensation and relaxed with relief.Â
She thought of Joshâs hands on her body. On her sides, on her boobs, on her thighs-
-Paigeâs hot tongue on her clit.Â
âFuck,â Azziâs hips twitched at the intrusive thought and felt her core tighten.Â
No. Focus.Â
Joshâs tongue on her clit. His face between her legs. And his eyes, looking up at-
-Paigeâs hot tongue on her clit. Her hands on Azziâs skin, grabbing everything she reaches. Her bright blue eyes looking up at Azzi hungrily with pupils dilated. Paige murmuring into her pussy how good she felt.Â
Just the fantasy of Paige telling Azzi a compliment made her moan. What if Paige is someone who uses praise during sex?
âOh God,â Azzi whined. She imagined Paige calling her a good girl while making her legs shake.Â
No, this is bad.Â
Josh calling Azzi a good girl.Â
No, that didnât entice Azzi at all. That would just be awkward. Besides, Josh wasnât like that. He was soft and gentle.Â
Azzi exhaled frustratedly. She just wanted to come.
Judging by the sounds Paigeâs ex-girlfriend had made, Paige was anything but soft and gentle. She was probably just like her personality - rough and mean. Sharp.Â
Merciless.Â
Azzi whimpered and took the vibrator up a notch. She grinded down on it and felt herself getting close, just like in her dream, but this time she was definitely gonna make sure to come.Â
Until she heard her phone ring and saw the contact photo of Josh lighten up the screen.Â
Guilt immediately took over all her senses, and she turned off the vibrator and tried to catch her breath before answering.Â
Fuck, what was she doing?
She felt dirty and ashamed and regretted ever reaching for the vibrator. She shouldâve just taken a cold shower and shook it off, but instead she chose to touch herself to the thought of someone else that wasnât her boyfriend? And to make things worse, it was his sister? His sister who also hated Azziâs guts? Everything was just backwards.
Azzi felt a pathetic tear roll down her cheek as she answered the phone at last.Â
She was the worst girlfriend ever.
On the other side of the door, Paige was sitting by the kitchen table, drinking her morning coffee in peace, having no idea that Azzi had just been seconds away from coming by thinking of her.Â
And it really was better that way, because the moment Azzi stepped out of her room, Paigeâs mouth instantly went dry just from looking at her.
Azzi looked all flushed, her lips almost looked more full and her cheeks had color in them and she looked so⌠wrecked. Paige couldnât tell if it was the face of somebody recently crying, or newly awake, or something else entirely. But the rawness of it all made Paige think that Azzi looked kind of beautiful this morning. Just a little.
âJosh wants to talk to you,â Azzi mumbled and gave her phone to Paige who had been staring at her.Â
Azzi couldnât meet Paigeâs eyes. It felt like her dirty little secret would be exposed if she did.Â
Paige grabbed her phone and saw her younger roommate disappear back into Joshâs bedroom.
âHey, howâs Europe?â Paige greeted her brother.
âHey Paigey, itâs all good. Itâs way more fun to work here than at home, it feels like a holiday while getting paid,â Josh said.Â
âIâm glad.â
âI havenât heard from you for a couple days,â Josh started. âHowâs it going living with Azzi?â
Paige let out a short laugh.Â
âYeah, thanks for just letting her drop the bomb on me when you already had left,â Paige scoffed. âReal nice of you. I had no say in it at all.â
âWell, it is our apartment,â Josh chuckled.
âIt isnât, but okay,â Paige said. âItâs going⌠alright. Iâll live.â
âYeah, and what about Azzi?â Josh asked.Â
âShe watched a horror movie in the middle of the night alone, I donât think you have to worry about her,â Paige stated.Â
âYeah, sheâs pretty fearless. Thatâs what I like about her,â Paige could practically hear Joshâs smile through the phone.Â
âAlright moving on,â Paige rolled her eyes.Â
âJust wanted to check in and see how things were between you two,â Josh said.Â
âAlrighty,â Paige said.Â
âAnd I just wanted to give a friendly reminder that it doesnât hurt to let your guard down for once and put in some effort into getting to know her.â
Paige let out a tired breath. âI donât see that happening anytime soon.â
âPaige,â Josh warned. âPlease. For me. She means the world to me, I want you two to get along.â
Paige rolled her eyes, but felt herself softening at his words. âFine, Iâll get to know her. But only for your sake. You owe me big time.â
âYou wonât regret it,â Josh replied gratefully.Â
âDonât be too sure.â
They said their goodbyes and I miss youâs and ended the call.Â
Paige took a last sip of her coffee and stood up. She approached Azziâs closed door with her phone in her hand, and gently knocked.Â
The brunette opened the door and looked up at Paige.
âHereâs your phone,â Paige said and handed it back to its owner.Â
âThanks,â Azzi mumbled out.Â
Joshâs words were still in Paigeâs head. She had promised him, after all.
âHey, I donât work until the afternoon, you wanna do something til then?â Paige casually asked.Â
The surprise on Azziâs face was evident. Her eyes widening, her mouth slightly opening and her throat bobbing from swallowing.
âUh, okay?â Azzi accepted the offer with an uncertain tone.Â
âWhat you like to do? Besides watching horror movies in the middle of the night.â Paige asked, leaning on the doorframe relaxed while Azzi looked like everything but relaxed.
âUm⌠I donât know,â Azzi drawled unsure. âI mean I do like watching movies. But maybe eat or something?â
âEat?â Paige raised her eyebrow at the girl.Â
âYeah, food, you know,â Azzi elaborated fumbly.Â
âYeah, Iâm familiar with the concept,â Paige huffed.Â
âWhat, you donât eat?â Azzi shot back, trying to regain some control in the conversation.Â
âOf course I eat, what kind of question is that?â Paige said bewildered, almost more to herself than to Azzi.Â
âOkay, so letâs.â
âAlright,â Paige huffed again. âI know a place.â
âImpressive,â Azzi said and looked at Paige with a small grin. Paige just looked back and shook her head like she had given up on the whole conversation.Â
âGet dressed. Weâll leave in ten,â Paige said sternly and disappeared into her own room.
Azzi just stood there a few seconds, taking in the fact that Paige had initiated any sort of contact with her. It was unexpected, and Paigeâs unpredictability made Azzi feel uneasy. What if this was all a setup? What if she was actually planning on performing a humiliation ritual on Azzi and this was just her way to lure her into the trap?
Despite her irrational fears, Azzi got dressed. A simple white cropped tight tank top with some loose denim cargos. It showcased her toned abs and defined arm muscles perfectly.Â
When she stepped outside of her room, Paige was already waiting for her by the front door, looking down at her phone. She was wearing what looked like a knitted basketball jersey from Nahmias and white pants. Her arms were more muscular than Azzi had thought, and she looked at them for an extra second before putting on her shoes.Â
During the car ride, Azzi found herself glancing at the blonde every other second. Her hands on the steering wheel looked nice and her arms as well. Azzi noticed the way her high cheekbones became even more prominent every time the sun peeked through into the car, and the way her jawline seemed impossibly sharp at all angles. Her eyes almost becoming bluer for every passing minute and how her tongue always wet the corner of her lips every other second.Â
If Azzi hadnât known Paige, she would definitely be in awe of her beautiful features.Â
âSomething funny about me?â Paige suddenly asked, but kept looking ahead at the road.Â
Azzi froze. She was caught.Â
âUh- I was just looking out the window,â she stuttered.Â
âWhatâd you see?â Paige asked unusually curiously.Â
Shit, Azzi thought.
âUm, just, traffic,â she cleared her throat nervously.
Paige didnât answer to that, she just frowned to herself.Â
At last, Paige parked the car in a garage that belonged to a mall. They walked inside, and Paige led them to a small brunch restaurant.Â
âItâs 10 am, itâs too early for lunch,â Paige explained as they took a seat in the back.Â
Azzi nodded and looked at the menu. She instinctively swallowed when she saw the prices of the food.Â
âI usually take the omelette with an acai berry bowl, itâs pretty good,â Paige mused out loud.Â
Azzi was nearly caught off guard by how casually Paige shared that with her.
âYou come here often?â she asked.
âItâs my go to date place,â the blonde shrugged.Â
âOh,â Azzi swallowed. This was the most she had heard Paige share about herself ever.Â
With that, Paige looked up from her menu and looked at Azzi.
âDonât flatter yourself,â she said emotionlessly. It wasnât mean, it wasnât playful, it was just very factually said.Â
âI would never,â Azzi innocently replied, and Paige raised her eyebrows and looked back at the menu.Â
Paige ordered her usual while Azzi decided to try the Belgian waffles with strawberries. It was still pricey, but not too expensive.Â
âYou wanna try some of my bowl?â Paige asked and scooted her bowl forward towards Azzi.Â
It was ridiculous, how Azzi found herself constantly feeling shocked by every little sign of normalcy the older one was showing her, but it genuinely took her by surprise every time. Her eyes widened so visibly it was almost embarrassing.
She just grabbed her spoon and took a small bite. It was the perfect mixture of berries, banana and pineapple, and Azzi really liked it.
âItâs good,â she nodded and scooted the bowl back.Â
âYouâre welcome to try my omelette too,â Paige offered.
âThatâs alright,â Azzi nervously chuckled.Â
They continued to eat in silence, with occasional glances at each other when the other one wasnât looking.Â
Azzi wondered what had happened. Why was Paige all of a sudden nice to her? She felt herself being tense, wondering when Paige would drop her next insult again. The memory of Paige completely shattering Azziâs heart the day she had made them dinner flashed in her mind, and Azzi instantly felt the lump in her stomach just by thinking of it.
Hesitantly, she asked:
âWas my dinner really that bad?â Her voice was quiet but still felt so loud after breaking the silence.Â
Paige met her eyes but showed no sign of surprise from the question. She just licked her lips and stared at her, until she finally opened her mouth.
âI donât know, I didnât really try it,â she shrugged.Â
Azzi frowned.Â
âIf you had, you wouldâve noticed that it was actually really good, and I wouldnât have gone to bed feeling bad,â Azzi confronted her with an honest confession.
âIt wasnât personal,â Paige argued. âI just donât like broccoli.â
âAnd there was no other way of saying that?â
Paige slowly exhaled.Â
âOkay, Iâm sorry if it came out wrong, but I just really donât like broccoli,â she stated.Â
But Azzi was quick to argue back.
âI donât want your sorryâs if they sound like that,â she said.
They werenât fighting. At least not yet. They were simply arguing calmly.
âYou donât like the way I express my preferences, and now you donât like the way I say sorry?â Paige raised her eyebrow and looked at her expectantly, as if Azzi should hear how ridiculous it sounded. âMaybe you just donât like me.â
âMaybe I donât,â Azzi said and stared at her with a neutral expression.Â
âGreat,â Paige huffed. âSo weâre on the same page then?â
âYouâre soâŚâ Azzi couldnât help herself but to frustratedly slip in an insult. âDifficult.â
Paige scoffed and tore her eyes away from Azzi and returned to her bowl.Â
Azzi thought they had dropped it and returned to their hostile silence once again. But she was wrong.Â
âIâm not difficult, Iâm just honest, and youâre just sensitive.â
Azzi almost wanted to laugh.Â
âI canât believe youâre twenty-six,â she let out, fully aware that it was a risky thing to say.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Paige asked, annoyed.
âYouâre twenty-six, you should know,â Azzi replied with narrowed eyes.
âWhat the fuck is your problem?â Paige was beginning to get more and more annoyed now. She had been nice, she had put in effort and she had taken Azzi to a great brunch restaurant, and Azzi was paying her back by being an asshole all of a sudden?Â
âWhat the fuck is your problem?â Azzi shot back.Â
âMy problem is that you came to my home, looking all flushed and cute, and just interrupted my space and peace. Thatâs my fucking problem,â Paige said angrily.Â
âCute?â Azzi dropped her annoyance and repeated the word, utterly confused.
âYeah, thatâs what you think you are, donât you?â Paigeâs chest heaved. She hadnât meant to say that. Hell, she hadnât even thought it before it slipped out of her mouth.
Azzi ignored that comment and argued: âI told you I could ask someone else, but you said I could stay.â
Paige huffed in annoyance, mostly because she didnât know what to say and she didnât trust herself anymore to not say something stupid again.Â
After having gathered her thoughts carefully, she said: âIâm not trying to fight with you, Iâm just trying to explain that you donât like me because Iâm honest, and I donât like you because youâre sensitive. Weâre just not compatible.â
Azzi narrowed her brown eyes, her gaze piercing as if she could see straight through Paige.
âIâm literally not sensitive,â Azzi calmly said. âYou have no idea how much shit I have taken in my life. Youâre just that disrespectful.â
âIf Iâm so damn disrespectful, then why are you here eating brunch with me?â Paige questioned. âWhy are you trying so damn hard to be liked by someone who's that disrespectful?â
âBecause youâre my boyfriendâs sister!â Azzi exclaimed frustratedly.Â
âBelieve me, I have done this too many times to count. Iâm sorry if Iâm tired of pretending to give a damn about someone I know will be out of Joshâs life within a month,â Paige said, and the whole table went quiet.
Paige looked straight at Azzi, and Azzi looked straight back at Paige.Â
âThatâs not true,â Azzi exhaled.Â
Paige knew she had stepped over several lines during the whole argument, but she felt the need to vindicate herself.Â
âJosh didnât tell you? That youâre number four this year?â Paige continued to make it worse with a malicious tone.
Before she knew it, her head was whipped to the side by Azzi's palm, and the sharp pain in her cheek followed shortly after.Â
Paige froze and let out a breath, her face still turned to the side. Her cheek was burning and it was probably already red. She saw Azzi leave the restaurant in her periphery.Â
A couple of customers who sat close by were staring at her, but she didnât care.Â
All she could think about was the look in Azziâs eyes she had right before she had slapped her. Tears had pooled in the corner of her eye, shimmering like glass on the edge of breaking.Â
âWhat the fuck am I doing?â Paige thought to herself and finally started to move again. She let her fingertips gently touch the cheek Azzi had smacked and slightly winced.Â
The thing with Azzi was that she wasnât like any of the other girls Josh had dated. She was persistent and obviously cared a lot more about what Paige thought about her than the rest of his exâs. She was soft and resilient. Quiet but also fearless. She was sensitive, but stood up for herself. And the fact that Paige had to live with her made it harder to dismiss her the way she had done with Joshâs other former girlfriends.Â
The slap was like a wake up call for Paige. It was humiliating and she should be mad. She should be furious with the fact that Azzi had humiliated her publicly.Â
Instead, she found herself feeling guilty.Â
Guilty for having pushed Azzi over the edge where she had felt that her words werenât ever enough for Paige to understand.Â
She quietly stood up from the table, paid for their food and left the restaurant. She walked to the car and hoped to herself that Azzi was waiting for her there - she wasnât.Â
Paige drove around until her shift started. She drove for an hour, in silence, all alone with her thoughts.Â
âDamn, youâve only shown one side of your face out in the sun or something?â Alexine asked the moment she stepped inside Velvet.Â
âAzzi slapped me,â Paige confessed quickly, not being in the mood to postpone the inevitable truth.Â
âThe fuck?â the bartender said, shocked.Â
âYeah. But it was my fault, really,â Paige said.
âObviously,â Alexine just replied to that.Â
Paige scoffed.
âI didnât mean to make her hate me this much,â Paige sighed.Â
âDidnât you? I mean, you were the one who hated her first.â
âI didnât hate her, I just disliked her and thought she was annoying. But now these last few days Iâve seen⌠less annoying traits in her.â
âOr maybe you just actually gave her a chance,â Alexine argued.Â
Paige groaned.Â
âI think I fucked up for real now,â she said. âIf Josh finds out, heâs gonna kill me. And I promised him to get to know her.â
âSo fix it.â
âYou always say things as if itâs easy,â Paige complained.Â
âIt is easy. Apologize.â
âShe doesnât like the way I say sorry,â the blonde told her.Â
âSo then show her instead of saying,â Alexine suggested.Â
Paige quietly repeated the sentence in her head. âShow her instead of sayingâ. Maybe there was some truth in that.Â
When she got home, it was in the middle of the night. She had been closing the bar and had stayed in her car a little longer than necessary before entering her own home. She had carefully looked up at the windows of her apartment and saw that the lights in the living room were out, which hopefully meant that Azzi was sleeping.Â
And to her relief, Azzi was nowhere in sight when she stepped inside.Â
Tomorrow sheâs gonna fix things. The burning sensation still on her cheek was a constant reminder of that.Â
----
Azzi woke up with dried tears on her face.Â
She wasnât usually someone who cried a lot, but the last few days had felt like a psychological test in every way, and she just had to break down. And since Paige had been working late the night before, she had felt herself relax into a complete breakdown.
She hadnât called Josh. She hadnât even texted him. Because what would she even say? âI slapped your sister that already hates me, you think sheâll like me more now?âÂ
Why the hell did she slap her? What if Paige was gonna tell Josh and he would break up with her and Paige would be right - Azzi would be gone within a month.Â
Paigeâs words had been ringing in her head ever since she had said it. Josh and Azzi hadnât talked about their exes a lot, but it never occurred to Azzi that Josh had dated several people recently.Â
Azzi sighed and tried to shake off the feeling of guilt and a bad gut feeling. It was 8 am.Â
Suddenly, a soft knock was heard on her bedroom door. Azzi almost thought she had misheard and didnât move.
âAzzi?â Paigeâs voice rang out and she gently knocked again.Â
Azzi nervously gulped, wiped away her dry tears from her face and approached the door.Â
The sight she saw when she opened the door was unexpected to say the least.Â
Paige, holding a bouquet of broccoli in one hand, and two pieces of paper in the other.Â
âHi,â Paige licked her lips, and for the first time ever, Azzi could see some nervousness and insecurity show in the blondeâs face.Â
âHey,â Azzi said.
Azzi saw Paigeâs eyes traveled up and down her body for a second, staying at her thighs one second longer before settling on her brown eyes. She was only wearing Joshâs oversized t-shirt and a pair of panties, but other than that she was bare. Azzi couldnât help but raise one of her eyebrows. Did Paige just check her out?
âThis is for you,â Paige handed her the large broccoli. âAnd these are two tickets to a horror movie we can go and watch tonight, if you want.â
Azzi took her random gifts into her hands quietly.Â
âUm,â Paige started again. âUh, I just wanted to say Iâm sorry. Although I know you donât like how I say sorry, but I really am sorry. I shouldnât have said what I said yesterday.â
Azzi just blinked, not really sure how to react. But before she could even say anything, Paige added:
âAnd I hope you stay.â
With that, Azzi felt her mouth slightly curve into a shy smile.Â
âIâm sorry too,â she said softly. âI shouldnât have slapped you. It was-â
â-No, you had every right to slap me,â Paige interrupted. âI stepped over the line. I was being a jerk.â
âWell, me too,â Azzi gave a crooked smile.Â
Paige shyly smiled at Azziâs smile and awkwardly cleared her throat.Â
âMaybe weâre more alike than we think,â Paige mused out loud.Â
âYou wish,â Azzi playfully said, and Paige actually let out a small chuckle at that, to her surprise.Â
âCan we like, start over?â Paige asked carefully.Â
Azzi felt a sudden conflict between her pride and her reason. Of course the best thing would be to start over, to forgive and forget. But the way Paige had treated her still hurt her. Besides, there was no guarantee that Paige was gonna be consistent with being nice. Azzi felt very limited trust in Paige.
âI want to,â Azzi started. âBut Iâm also a little scared if Iâm being honest.â
Paige nodded understandingly.Â
âI get that,â she said. âMe too.â
âAre you?â Azzi asked, surprised. What could Paige possibly be scared of? Insulting her too much?Â
âYeah,â she confirmed. âI donât know how to explain, but you kind of trigger something in me. And no offense, but itâs kind of annoying.â
âOh,â Azzi said, kind of disappointed.Â
âI guess I feel like Iâm usually so in control, but you make me feel like Iâm not, and that feels kinda scary to me,â Paige confessed quietly.Â
âBecause I live in your home?â Azzi asked, genuinely wanting to understand.Â
âNo, or yes, or likeâŚâ
Azzi had never heard Paige have this much trouble getting her words out ever.Â
âI donât know,â she said. âIt just felt safer for me to keep you at a distance. But I understand now that itâs not sustainable, for either of us. As you said yesterday, you are Joshâs girlfriend, and I canât just ignore that.â
Azzi was confused. She didnât quite understand what Paige meant with âsaferâ, as if Azzi was some sort of danger.Â
âOkay,â she said slowly. âIs there anything I can do to make it feel safer for you?â
Paigeâs lips twitched into a smile. âYeah, travel back in time and undo the night I heard your moansâ, Paige thought to herself, and instantly caught herself in the subconscious truth.Â
Wait⌠Was that the root problem? Azziâs fucking moans?Â
âUh- I- um- I think,â Paige full on glitched as realization hit. Her eyes started to wander, trying to find something that could ground her as her thoughts were racing. The fact that Azzi was just standing there expectantly, her panties slightly showing when she moved her arms, did not help.Â
âNo,â Paige exhaled at last. âItâs my own problem that I gotta take responsibility for.â
Azzi hummed with her eyebrows raised. She almost looked suspicious.Â
âWell, Iâm scared youâll step over the line again,â Azzi shared honestly.Â
Paige nodded. âI know.âÂ
âIâm gonna be honest with you, Paige,â Azzi started. âI really want us to get along, for Joshâs sake. Maybe heâs brought home a lot of girlfriends that have lived here, I donât know. But you need to understand that Iâm not like them. Iâm here to stay. Josh means the world to me, and so his family means the world to me too. And youâre his family. So you gotta get used to the fact that Iâll be here.â
The older woman bit her lip and listened.Â
âI know,â she then said once again.Â
âDo you?â Azzi questioned skeptically.Â
âYeah, it hit me yesterday,â Paige said. âOn my cheek, actually,â she added, with a cheeky grin.Â
Azzi couldnât help but roll her eyes with a smile playing on her lips.Â
âHave patience with me,â Paige asked of Azzi. âAnd Iâll have patience with you.â
âDonât be a jerk, and I wonât slap you,â Azzi countered.Â
Paige cocked her head to the side with a smirk.Â
âDeal.â
She extended her hand, but Azzi had something else in mind instead.Â
Azzi put down her gifts on the floor, then took a step forward and wrapped her arms around the blonde woman.Â
âDeal.â
Paigeâs breath caught in her throat by the proximity of the brown eyed girl. Her vanilla lavender shampoo filling Paigeâs nostrils, making her stomach do involuntary flips at the sweet scent.Â
She hesitantly and awkwardly put her hands on Azziâs back and reciprocated the hug. She felt the muscles on Azziâs back and felt her heart race through her ribs. And with that, she let go of the younger one, hoping that she hadnât felt how hard her heart had beaten.
âCanât believe you want to put yourself through another horror movie,â Azzi chuckled and picked up the gifts from the floor. As she was bending down, her T-shirt rode up and her pantyclad butt was on full display for Paige.Â
She turned her head sideways by reflex, feeling her cheeks start to heat up. And she cursed under her breath for the additional confirmation of her realization.Â
She hated to even think about it, to even have to admit it to herself.Â
But maybe the whole problem was that she was really fucking attracted to her brotherâs girlfriend.
Later that night, the two women drove to the movie theatre to watch the horror movie Paige had bought tickets to. She was dreading it, knowing that she actually hated horror movies. But she was serious about wanting to fix things with Azzi, and therefore she found herself sitting in the front row of the venue with popcorn in her lap.Â
âI heard this movie is based on a true story,â Azzi casually and reached over to grab some popcorn from Paigeâs lap. They were sharing a big one.Â
âWhy would you say that?â Paige groaned, already feeling terrified and the movie hadnât even begun yet.Â
Azzi just smirked and kept on chewing her popcorn.Â
The movie was horrible. If it wasnât a jumpscare, it was morbid images and suspense that made Paige slowly die on the inside. She was jumping, gasping, almost screaming at times. Eventually, Azzi had to move the popcorn to her own lap just to stop losing handfuls every time Paige flinched.
Halfway through the movie, Azzi looked over at Paige amused and saw how the older one was grabbing her chair like it would save her, shutting her eyes tightly to not have to watch the horrible scenes.Â
âYou need to hold my hand?â Azzi asked teasingly.Â
But Paige didnât even hesitate. She just opened her palm, eyes still shut.Â
Azzi swallowed, taken aback by her openness for the physical touch. She gently put her palm against Paigeâs and wrapped her finger around, still staring at her. Paige didnât react, she just welcomed Azziâs hand gratefully and held onto it.Â
Azzi could feel the tremble in Paigeâs fingers and started to actually feel bad for her. She was obviously not enjoying it.Â
âYou want to leave?â she leaned over and whispered.Â
âNo, no, Iâm fine,â Paige opened her eyes and looked at her, panic visible in her eyes.Â
It was laughable.Â
âI can see that,â Azzi smiled and rubbed her thumb on Paigeâs hand. âBut really, we can leave. I donât mind.â
Paige hesitated.Â
âYou sure?â
âYes,â Azzi slightly giggled and got up from her chair and led them out of the cinema, never letting go of Paigeâs hand.Â
Paige looked down at their hands, fingers tangled together.
If it had been yesterday, she wouldâve freaked out. It wouldâve set off that familiar sense of danger.
But today, it felt warm. Steady. Addicting.
She had been afraid of Azziâs ability to make her lose control and it had almost taken a week for her to understand that the control she was referring to was her self-restraint. Because the more control she let go of, the more self-restraint was slipping.
But maybe it didnât matter. If it meant holding Azziâs hand again, Paige didnât really mind losing it anymore.Â
----
It had gone two weeks since Azzi moved in, and the last week had been exponentially better between the two women than the first one.Â
Paige had accepted her attraction to Azzi and stopped projecting it into dislike, and instead let herself notice the things she actually liked about her - for example her eyes, her lips, her smile, her voice, her arms, her hands, her whole body actually, and her hair, and the way she always walked into the kitchen in the morning with that oversized T-shirt and those sleepy eyes, and the way she always teased Paige back, and how she wanted to get to know Paige for real. It truly made her want to put her walls down for once.Â
Azzi had started to genuinely enjoy Paigeâs company. Yeah, she was blunt - sometimes to the point of being rude - and had a way of saying things that landed hard. But Azzi had slowly learned, the hard way, that it truly wasnât personal, and that it didnât necessarily change the way Paige felt about something. Paige could say something borderline rude and the next moment laugh at Azziâs response to it. It was just never that deep with Paige.Â
They had gotten into a routine of always greeting each other with a hug in the morning, which had quickly become Paigeâs favorite time of the day. Sometimes when she was working late at the bar, she even found herself longing for the morning just to have Azzi in her arms again.Â
But longing for those kinds of things obviously didnât come without conflicted feelings. Of course Paige felt guilt. Guilt towards Josh for craving something that was technically his, and guilt towards Azzi for craving her at all. Â
Paige told herself that it was innocent. As long as she didnât act on it, it was just harmless thoughts and feelings. There was nothing wrong with being attracted to Azzi, especially now that things had started to feel easier between them. If anything, realizing she actually wanted to be around her had made everything simpler. Or at least, thatâs what she kept telling herself.
But there was one day where Paige almost couldnât handle it.Â
It was a day when neither of them had work and they were watching a movie in the living room. Paige was curled up on the chaise, legs stretched out beneath a blanket. Across from her, Azzi sat with her body angled toward Paige, her back resting against the armrest, comfortably settled in.
The fact that Azzi was only wearing her pajama T-shirt and light grey panties had been a reason enough for Paige to have a hard time breathing normally, but then on top of that, a sex scene appeared on the screen. And not only that - it was a sex scene between two women.Â
The tension in the room shifted. Mostly because it was awkward to watch together.Â
The women on the screen were devouring each other. Paige and Azziâs silence made the moans from the speakers feel uncomfortably loud, and Paige reached for the control to lower the volume a little, which earned a faint snicker from the brunette.Â
âDoes that make it less awkward, to turn down the volume?â Azzi teasingly asked.Â
Paige turned her head and looked at her with a neutral face, trying to play it cool.Â
âJust donât want the neighbours to think weâre having sex in here,â she shrugged.Â
Azzi laughed. âYeah right.â
But Paige didnât miss the way Azziâs cheeks started to turn red, and how she stroked her leg against the other one, almost squirming with her lower half. And it made Paigeâs lips curve into a smug smirk.Â
The moment the screen showed how one of the women ate the other one out, Paige heard Azzi swallow quite loudly. She glanced over and saw how she was squeezing her legs together.Â
âAre you turned on by this?â Paige almost laughed, and Azzi instantly looked at her with a glare.Â
âNo?â Azzi said angrily.Â
âYou so are,â Paige kept on teasing. âYouâre literally tensing up.â
âShut up,â Azzi threw a pillow at her, which Paige easily just caught. âIâm just cold.âÂ
âOh youâre cold?â Paige chuckled.Â
âYeah, dumbass,â Azzi said and scrambled up from the couch and approached Paige.Â
And Paige froze.Â
Not because Azzi just made her scoot over and let her sit next to her, her leg brushing against Paigeâs under the blanket.Â
But because she saw it.Â
The moment Azzi had moved to stand up, she saw the dark patch on her panties.Â
âAre you turned on by this?â Azzi asked after Paige had been completely silent, paralyzed, for a full minute.Â
All Paige could feel was Azziâs bare thigh against her own, her shoulder leaning on hers, and the image of her panties stuck in her mind.Â
Azzi was wet.Â
âNo,â Paige exhaled as images of having Azzi underneath her started to intrusively play in her mind.Â
âThen why did you tense up all of a sudden?â Azzi pushed with a smirk.Â
She was looking at Paige, but Paige couldnât meet her eyes. They were too close. It was too much.Â
âIâm just not feeling this movie,â Paige said seriously.Â
âMe neither,â Azzi sighed and leaned her head on Paigeâs shoulder.Â
Moments like those, Paige almost wondered if Azzi felt the same way she did. But she knew that she didnât.Â
She was her brotherâs girlfriend, for crying out loud!
She probably only saw Paige as some older sister figure, and Paige was over there, thinking sinful things about her.Â
Oh, Paige was going to hell.Â
She was breathing heavily but tried to stay as still as possible with Azziâs head on her shoulder.Â
âYou smell good,â Azzi suddenly mumbled.Â
Paige just took a deep breath and closed her eyes for two seconds. What was she doing to her?
âThanks.â
Azzi moved her head and looked up at Paige, the air out of her nose hitting Paigeâs throat and her lips painfully close as well.Â
âWhat perfume do you use?â she inhaled with her nose and Paige felt goosebumps rise all over her skin.Â
âValentino,â Paige replied, strained.Â
âWhich one?â
âUomo Born in Roma.â
âHmm,â Azzi hummed and stroked her nose against Paigeâs throat almost like a cat, and Paige felt her lips barely brushing her skin.Â
Paige was almost shaking from having all her muscles being tense. This is what it must feel like right before you burst, Paige thought to herself. Her self-restraint was being tested to its limits, and she did everything in her power to not completely turn into a desperate mess.
This was too much. Paige could feel her body collapsing, feel her brain overheat and her heartbeat impossibly hard against her ribcage. This was not good.Â
âUh- I have to go to the bathroom,â Paige blurted out and fled the scene.Â
Azzi just sat on the couch and looked after her with a satisfied smirk on her face.Â
