I. Men would cower at my name, were they so allowed to speak it. Men would swoon to see my face, were they unafraid to see it. Dreary though it is I have my garden, and a husband that is just, and fair, not kind. I imagine it is lonely there in winter. I know I have grown used to the cold. I know I have grown. III. They used to call me Cora. I was a child. I was a maiden, and a foolish girl, and dull. When men hit the ground and curse, I grant damnations. Mother, this place is dark-walled, but it’s home. IV. I will be home soon, in the springtime, growing flowers. But know that you can’t stop me when I leave again. It is beautiful above ground, and beautiful below. I am now life and death, the dread Persephone.
