jacob held the blond's gaze with clenched teeth, as if holding back a beast by force, only by the weight of his own pride. it was unbearable to realize how much jasper seemed to break through defenses that not even he knew were still standing. that ability to feel other people's emotions, shape them, name them made him something more dangerous than an armed enemy.

jacob hated this. this vampire 'stuff'.

he hated the way jasper read his tremors before his body even admitted them and how he behaved. as if people's feelings almost had a smell, a color, a sound — and he was the only fool incapable of hiding it.

"you don't know anything about me or what i feel" he finally muttered.

it was almost a whisper, but it carried enough hatred to set an entire forest on fire.

he raises an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth curling into a half smile as he watches her stretch. unhurriedly, he crosses his arms over his chest and leans against the narrow frame of the bedroom door.

“as if you’d catch up to me” he says in a light, almost distracted tone.

the silence that follows weighs more than the provocation. he lets out a long sigh, his eyes fixed on her, now more attentive.

“are you going to tell me what happened last night... or are you going to keep pretending it was just another night?”

there was a time when charlie and his twin were unwanted, despised, and even plotted to be put to death by whatever methods it took. who could have gathered at that time, how far they'd come from then? who could have seen charlie and ness, large crooked grins on both their faces, embracing the world rather than destroying it? it was nearly impossible to believe... and yet the proof was living and breathing several dozen meters before jake, standing in the now open doorway to the front foyer of the cullen's glass home.

" jake? " his voice has deepened considerably, sounding similar to his father in pitch– yet this was charlie. doe eyes and brown hair, edward's facial features surely, but bella's coloring. charlie was a perfect combination of the two—  and his sister? was his mirror.

it was impossible to deny what they were: immortal yet mortal. the two of them were walking contradictions that should by all possible logic, not exist. and yet here one half of the pair stood, descending the front outdoor stair case, down to the paved driveway that cut through the woods.

" it's me— it's char. "

the last time the wolf had seen the boy, he'd been in a little yellow rain coat— over sized boots he'd grow into the following week, squeaking with each step he'd taken. now he quickly approaches, each step faster than the last, in a hoodie and jeans; some high school's name scrawled across his back. he was far from the little boy who had been placed with his sister upon jacob's hide, and told to run. and yet he was that same little boy in the same breath.

jacob held his breath the moment he felt it—his presence.

charlie?!

the child — no, the young —stood in the open doorway of the glass house’s foyer. his voice cut through the stillness, and for a heartbeat jacob saw edward. no. not the predator with gold or crimson eyes, but something closer to human.

charlie had bella’s eyes— dark, wide & soft like a doe’s. but the sharp lines of his face, the tension in his jaw — that was pure edward. he was a contradiction carved into flesh. the impossible child of two impossibilities. and yet, here he was, alive. walking down the steps with the kind.

the forest seemed to fold around him like it remembered, like the trees and stones had watched him grow. the paved trail beneath his feet, as if he'd never really left.

jacob finally breathed. the words tumbled out before he could tame them, thick with a weight he hadn’t meant to show.

"it's... it's me, char." his voice was rough, almost breaking. he swallowed, stepped forward, eyes locked on that new face. he blinked hard. "you’ve grown up."

𝒯he  cold  of  the  morning  nips  at  her  nose,  pale  complexion  flushed.  her  dad's  beloved  bomber  jacket  barely  keeps  her  warm,  even  when  zipped  all  the  way  up.  she  had  driven  to  the  reserve  at  the  crack  of  dawn,  wanting  to  see  jacob  at  last.  she  had  been  sending  messages,  leaving  calls,  &  nothing.  she'd  been  dropping  by  every  now  &  then,  &  nothing.  so  she  would  try  again.

was  he  avoiding  her   ?   had  she  done  something  wrong  ?  she  can't  bare  the  thought  of  a  friend  being  upset  with  her. she  sees  the  glimpse  of  him,  sat  upon  worn  porch.  pace  quickens  as  she  approaches  him,  almost  a  stomp  in  every  step.  “   are  you  ok  ?   ”   eyebrows  are  furrowed.   “   you've  been  ignoring  me.   ” 

her hurried footsteps cut through the thick silence of the morning, breaking the stillness that enveloped him. jacob didn’t move immediately. he continued to hold his coffee mug in his hands, his gaze lost somewhere in the invisible forest ahead—but he already knew it was bella.

when she came into his line of vision, her shoulders were hunched inside her loose jacket, the fabric feeling heavier than it should around her. there was something fragile about her posture, but her gaze was steady—fixed on him. as if demanding an explanation. as if she were ready to rip it away by force.

jacob took a deep breath and ran a hand through his short hair, looking away for a moment, as if trying to find a way to tell the truth.

“i wasn’t ignoring you” he began, his voice low, husky, almost blending in with the soft creaking of the trees around them. “i… i couldn’t answer.”

he raised his eyes to meet hers. it was hard to pick up the phone when you're running through the forest with four giant paws and no hands.
