I Havenât Been Completely Honest With You... || Mary & Adam
The more Jacob spoke, the more she started wondering just how serious this was. Honestly, why couldnât things be easy for them just this once? If it had to do with someone while Adam was in Rogue, how the heck could she guess who it was? She didnât know anyone who was a part of Rogue. When he moved closer to her she leaned further back into the couch, wincing, frightened. Mary didnât know what to do and she started crying again. How could she be mentally stable enough for two more people again? She couldnât even do it for a whole family. She canât do it anymore. She canât enable it. She canât. At the mention of War she paled, knowing he was talking about one of the leaders. God, what kind of mess did her brothers get into? What if Joseph was worse? What if⌠She looked up at the sound of Adamâs voice and tried to wipe her tears away, but she knew she couldnât do it without being obvious.
âYouââ she started, choking because she didnât know whether to lie to Adam or tell him what Jacob said. Her lower lip trembled and just trying to wipe her tears away made room for more. âJacob,â she whined, unable to get more than a couple syllables out at the moment. Dropping her hands and looking at him, she moved to hug him tightly, crushing her glasses against his shoulders. She started sobbing like she was a child all over again and couldnât handle the stress growing up in a household of different faces, of having to see your mother and father as different people, their normal faces becoming as strange to you as the others. âIâm sorry for leaving. Maybe, maybe if I hadnât we wouldnât be in this mess and youâyou wouldnât be dealing with some dead guyâs memories.â She leaned back, looking at him through watering eyes. âHe told me th-they did something to you. Andâand heâs keeping it from coming back out.â She had to tell him. They said no more lying and Mary took it as no more secrets. She didnât want to hide anything from him. They could give each other strength. Jacob didnât know how strong family could be. He didnât know their family. They will go through hell and come out in one piece.
Seeing his sister in tears made Adam all the more sure that something had happened to him, but he couldnât even begin to guess what, and her mentioning Jacob just confused him more. âMary, wha-â he couldnât even really get a word in though before she was suddenly hugging him so tight that he was afraid something might break. And then came an apology and something about a cryptic warning Jacob told her? How long was he out for exactly? Actually, screw it. It didnât matter. Whatever it was had really scared Mary, and what he needed to worry about was making sure she was alright. He wrapped one arm around her and started running his fingers through her hair to comfort her. âItâs okay, weâll be okay.â
Adam felt tears come to his eyes as well, and he lowered his voice to keep it steady. âDonât ever think this is your fault, okay? You did the right thing for you. Whatever happened between then and now... it doesnât matter. Weâre gonna find Joseph, and weâre going to get past whatever this is. Whatever they did to me, Iâm still here after it. Jacob doesnât know how strong us Wakes are. As long as I have my family, I can get through anything. And as long as Iâm here, no matter what comes at us, Iâm not going to let anything happen to my little sister. So donât worry.â It had never been easy for them. From the beginning, the chips had been stacked against them. But they were still here, and whatever this was would just be another thing that made them stronger in the end.
