âItâs not your fault, Jack. Whoever did this, especially if it was Booker - he did it because they wanted to. He would have found a way no matter what,â Rey insisted, hating the look on Jackâs face, remembering how it looked on her own when Karen had been killed. She still blamed herself on some days, but she kept that to herself.Â
She swallowed and forced herself out of the memory. She usually made a rule of not allowing emotion to drive off professionalism, but instinct overpowered it. She leaned forward and put her hand on top of Jackâs in comfort. âWeâll get your Bucky back. I promise.â
Jack looked up at Rey and managed a half-smile even if it was just for here benefit. She was trying to help when she really didnât have to. âThere was nothing I could have done,â he agreed, though he still thought about how the personâs intentions, were it Booker could still be because of something he did.
He believed she meant the promise and he still believed it was possible. He certainly wasnât giving up until he was back. âWhat can I do?â
