As the ice settled inside the glass she held, it rattled around, making a small clinking sound as it separated from each other. Distracted, she looked down at it, noticing a small cherry sinking to the bottom â dammit.
Under her breath she âahemâedâ, stalling as words had conveniently escaped her. What could she have said?
How she remembers what he confessed that night before she left town? Or how she just left him there without saying it back? Or how she would send him postcard after postcard, but never heard anything back?Â
She didnât want to think about it, didnât want to remember any of it, because it hurt. But, the thing about Romy was, she didnât let it come to light. If she was hurt, sheâd suck it up. If she was angry, sheâd put a smile on. She repressed a lot of shit thanks to her parents for never listening to her, or telling her she was making a big deal out of nothing. So, she learned to hold it all in.Â
There was a sudden shift in mannerisms from her, as she smiled at Jack. Her eyebrows raised, just as her lips stretched into a fine line across her features, and she shifted her weight from one foot to the next â fake it till you make it.
âThe band?â It came out as a question, and it was meant as such. Romy wasnât sure if thatâs what he was referring too, but sheâd oblige, âWe split. I got my old job back at the cafe. Iâm, uh, back-back. But, uh, how are you? Howâs things?âÂ
Jack tried not to frown - all he could think about was all the dreams theyâd had, back when they were kids. Jack would be a published poet, and Romy would be a famous musician, and theyâd get away from Elisabeth and everything would be perfect. Obviously, those were just dreams, though.. But Jack had hoped at least Romy could make hers come true. And now, here he was. Being pulled back to fucking reality.
âShit,â He said, trying to look as casual about it as possible. âI.. Sorry to hear that.â How was he? God, the inevitable question. What was he supposed to say to that? Terrible? Everything is the same? âUh, Iâm.. You know. Same old Jack.â
