Working in the Avengers tower had become routine, while you were hired as Tonyâs lab assistant, youâd occasionally patch up a surface wound if anyone stopped by. Your day was mainly spent in the lab, trying to ignore Tonyâs bad jokes and bickering with Bruce. Although you werenât technically an avenger, the team had become so used to having you around, that if you werenât there it would feel off.Â
It had taken time, in the beginning you were timid around the group, only really talking to Tony and Bruce. You had been skittish, and it had taken a long time for you to feel like you belonged in the tower. Now you felt like being at work was your break from reality. Youâd be able to dive into a project and not worry about what was waiting for you at home.Â
Youâd been tinkering with Tonyâs suit for the past couple hours, a malfunction in the hardware had caused his blasters to stop working. You hadnât noticed the door to the lab open, or the super soldier leaning against the table. âWhat are you doing?â Bucky breaks the silence, you shot up, dropping the tools in your hands around you, as you turned to him. âBucky! You scared me!â your exclamation makes Bucky chuckle, as he raises his arms in surrender. âBefore you gave me a heart attack, I was trying to fix Tonyâs suit, somethingâs off with it, but I canât place itâ Bucky would never tell anyone, but he canât help but love the way your eyes light up when you get that determined look on your face.Â
You looked back at Bucky, expecting him to say something, but he just stood there looking at you. You grinned shyly and waved your hand in front of his face, âEarth to Buckyâ he snapped out of it with a light blush across his cheeks. âSo, did you just come here to scare me, or did you need something?â you lean against the table, turned toward him, while your hand held your wrist, soothing it slightly.
âI was wondering if you could help me take out my stitches?â Buckyâs eyes find the floor, and you furrow your brows at him. You know very well that he is able to take out stitches, hell he could easily stitch himself up without even flinching. You bite your tongue, âSure, sit downâ, you motion for him to sit on your chair as you go and grab the equipment.Â
When you turn back around his shirt is off, you stumble just a bit, and try to regain the balance of the tray youâre holding. The blush is set on your face, and you try your best to act as if it doesnât exist. âHow old is it?â you ask, as you inspect the wound, itâs about 4 inches long and sits on the left side of his chest. Bucky replies as you start working on taking out the stitches. Your fingers graze his skin, despite the deliberate calmness to your touch, it makes Buckyâs skin heat up.Â
âThere you goâ you finished up and threw out the used tissue, âyouâre as good as newâ. Bucky felt the warm, nervous feeling in his stomach as he looked at your smile. âThank you, dollâ his nicknames always managed to fluster you. âI think Tony ordered some food for dinner, dâyou wanna join?â Bucky motioned his head toward the door, and his invitation made you smile, but you couldnât let go of the feeling of dread that crept in.Â
Just as you were about to answer, your phone started ringing. The lockscreen showed a photo of your boyfriend, and you answered immediately, knowing better than to let him hang. âHi Brettâ you gave Bucky an apologetic smile, as Brett questioned if you were on your way home, âIâll be home in twenty minutes, things ran a bit late hereâ. Tyler muttered something under his breath, you sensed he wasnât going to be in a good mood when you got home. You ended the phone call and turned back to Bucky, he tried to look interested in something on the table, clearly not wanting to listen in on your conversation.Â
âSorry Bucky, I have to get home, maybe I can join you guys another timeâ he nodded, and watched as you packed up your things. âLet me walk you to the doorâ he offered, you wanted to refuse, scared of how Brett would react if he found out, but Bucky wasnât offering as much as he was telling. You two walked out to the main doors, talking quietly and giggling here and there. âThanks for walking me to the doorâ you smiled up at him, at your thanks it looked like he grew about six inches and stuck out his chest a little. âOf course, doll, get home safeâ Bucky offered you a soft smile as he opened the door for you. âI will, and remember to be careful with the scar, and put on the ointment I gave youâ he chuckled at your lecture, but agreed and watched as you walked out in the streets and blended in with the crowds of people.
The next day you entered the lab with your head toward the floor. Trying your best to blend in with the sterile interior, and taking the long way up in order to avoid as many avengers as possible. Apparently, you weren't the only one trying to avoid people. In your busy job, looking down, you bumped into a firm body, who caught you by the arm before you fell. âSorry doll, I didn't think anyone would be going this wayâ Bucky's voice hitched, as does your heart at the nickname. Bucky shuffles awkwardly, and a blush appears on his cheeks. âDon't worry, I-...I should've looked where I was goingâ you dismiss his apology with your own, only now meeting his eyes. You could see the shift.
Bucky took you in, the dark circles and sunken in eyes morphed your face in a way he hasn't seen before. He noticed how you tug at the hem of your sleeves, it's almost unconsciously, but his analysing gaze proves him wrong. You looked away, too intimidated by his staring eyes. âI have to get to the labâ you squeaked and hurried around Bucky. Before you're fully out of the mostly empty hallways, you turn around, only to see Bucky already standing there, with a small smile on his face and body turned to you. With a tight smile you continue down the hallway, away from this super human, who apparently just studied your mind without you saying anything.
While you're nose deep in Tony's latest project, Bucky just wrapped up training with Sam. Bucky hadn't been able to quit thinking about that look on your face, and he was sure Sam had noticed by now. âYou're usually quiet, but man it's starting to get weird nowâ Sam's smirk widening as he nudged the super soldier, earning a low grunt from him. Bucky turned to leave the training area, but halted and turned towards Sam. Sam's grin lessened at Bucky's grim expression.Â
âDo you think Y/n's doing alright? I mean like lately?â Bucky could tell Sam already had a joke, or five, lined up, so he shot him a warning glare. With a hum Sam composed himself, giving himself time to think. âI don't know man, I think Tony just got a lot of different projects for her, maybe she needs a break?â Sam's thoughts didn't calm Bucky, clearly what he'd seen wasn't nothing. Though the way your eyes had shifted to something unrecognizable, it didn't seem like just time off would fix it.Â
âYeah maybeâ Bucky muttered as they both walked out the door and went to grab a water. âHave you tried talking with her about it?â Sam's question made Bucky blush slightly, but also turn his head away as an answer. âYou gotta talk to her first! Or else you'll never know what's going on in her brainâ Sam held his shoulder in a firm grip and laughed to himself, he took his water and left Bucky to ponder on his own.Â
Later in the afternoon, Bucky have already worn down a permanent trail of worry in his room, he decides to go talk to you. Hoping that his worries will be made to shame. At first he knocks quietly on the lab door, but it doesnât seem to catch your attention, neither does the louder, and firmer, knocks he tries with. Losing patience, Bucky opens the door and at first thinks the lab is empty. That is until he sees your hunched over form, scribbling away on a piece of paper and headphones in.
His heart tightens and warms at the sight, your eyebrow scrunch of focus, your hair splaying around your head, cascading in front of your face. You hum along to whatever song is playing in your ears, and Bucky is about to squash his worries at what looks like apparent content.Â
His breath hitches in his throat when he spots dark purple splotchings at your upper wrist, almost hidden by your shirt. The bruising looks angry and pulsing, so, new. Buckyâs mind short circuits, and at a certain point he is worried he reverted back to the soldier. His eyes narrowed in at the bruising.Â
Just as Bucky steps forward, you absentmindedly look up from your work and flinch at the appearance of another person in the lab. âBucky?â your voice is quiet, testing the waters, the look in his eyes make you nervous. âWhat are you doi-â your sentence trails off when you see where his eyes are pointed. Not your eyes, not your work. Itâs your wrist, that is even more visible after your surprise flinch.Â
Panic sets in, and in one quick motion the sleeve is pulled down to your fingers, and in an even quicker motion, Bucky moves to stand directly besides you. You stay silent, not daring to look Bucky in the eyes, as you already feel them start to burn. It takes a couple of minutes before Bucky speaks up, his voice sounds far away, but brings you back to reality. âWas it Brett?â your shoulders tense at the mentioning of his name, and Buckyâs direct question.Â
The silence is enough for Bucky. He steps back and exhales a deep sigh, dragging his hand over his face. Bucky use every force inside his body to calm his reaction, not wanting to put you through more. Your head is slumped, hair hiding your face, as the tears start rolling. A small sniffle makes Bucky turn around.Â
At once, Bucky kneels by your chair, turning you to face him, as he brushes some of your hair away. Bucky has experienced brainwashing, torture and punishment, but nothing is as bad as seeing your broken form in front of him. âIâm sorry-â you manage to whisper, and you instantly feel Buckyâs warm hand on your cheek, wiping away your tears. âDoll, you have nothing to apologize for, it is never your faultâ Bucky mutters reassurance for a while, until you calm down enough to finally look him in the eyes.Â
âDoll, I need you to tell me if thereâs more bruising, are you hurt other places?â Bucky scans your face as it twists in anguish, and nod after a little while. âMy ribs, I think theyâre just bruisedâŚâ you gesture to your left side. Bucky wants to rip apart the man who dared touch you in this way. He nods, trying to come up with the best plan. âI will get Tony to set up the spare room for you, youâre not going homeâ at this you stare wildly in his eyes, fear erasing your irises. âNo, I canât, he will know, he will come for meâ while you rambled in fear you didnât noticed you gripped Buckyâs arm, squeezing more for each worried thought that entered your brain.
Buckyâs hand smoothed over yours, soothing some of the anxious tension. âDoll, weâre a whole tower full of avengers, who all will fight for you, weâll keep you safeâ his eyes softened, âI will keep you safeâ. You choke a cry and lean forward, resting your head on Buckyâs shoulder, and finally letting him hold you.
The sun has slowly begun setting and you step into the room Tony had made up for you, it was cozy, not too big and most importantly safe. Two small knocks sound against the door as it creeks open, Bucky peaks inside and smiles at you. âIs it alright?â he asks, and you nod enthusiastically. âItâs great Buck, thank you for everythingâ you step forward and embrace him in a hug. âDâyou want to go to the kitchen, I think Sam is trying to make something edible for dinnerâ you laugh at Buckyâs dig at Sam and agree.Â
You feel safe at the tower, but you still walk close to Bucky. Somehow just his presence reassures your feeling of safety, and Bucky doesnât seem to mind it. As the two of you join Sam in the kitchen, the bickering between the two men starts almost instantly. You sit on a bar stool and observe them, the scene feels homely and comfortable.Â
That is until a loud commotion is heard from down the entry hallway. Sam and Bucky instantly switch to avengers mode, and Bucky hurries over to you. âStay behind me at all timeâ his tone is serious and non-negotiable. You move a few feet behind the two of them, as they stealthily get closer to the sound.Â
âY/N!! WHERE ARE YOU?!â you stop dead in your tracks, face stiffen as well as the rest of your body. A second after his voice rings out, he walks into your view. Brett's face is twisted with rage and possession, and disregarding the two avengers in between you two, he towers forward in an attempt to get to you.
âBack down man!â Sam barks out, hand hovering, ready to attack if need be. âGet out of my way, this doesnât concern youâ Brett snarls and continues, only being stopped by Buckyâs vibranium hand, keeping him in his place. âItâs Y/nâŚIt concerns me a lotâ Bucky growls, eyes dark and ready to kill.Â
Brett backs up with raised hands, until he is far enough back to get cocky again. âSo itâs you? You got my slut wrapped around your finger or somethinâ?â Brett smirk as he looks between you and Bucky. âYou better leave now, before things get messyâ Sam offers a diplomatic way out, he knows Bucky is beyond reason and even speech.Â
Brett turns with a scoff, ready to walk away, âWhatever, you enjoy my sloppy seconds, sheâll let you all fuck her if you just say please, slutâ. Brett barely got to mutter the last word before a fist hit him in the back of his head. Bucky spins him around and headbutts him, while landing a crushing kick to his groin. In under 15 seconds, Brett is whining and writhing on the ground, while Bucky towers over him.Â
âGet lostâ Bucky warns and delivers a final kick to his stomach. Bucky turn around and walk to you, while Sam stays and makes sure that Brett will never dare show his face at the Avengers Tower again.Â
You stand, frozen to your spot, as Bucky steps in between your view of Brett. âAre you okay?â Bucky slowly reaches out and holds your hand, grounding you back in the moment. âI thinkâ you nod as you meet his eyes, and the ice seems to be replaced by warmth spreading from your stomach.Â
Bucky leads you back to your new room, while you sit on your bed, he props up pillows and blankets for you. You grab his hand, stopping him in the whirlwind of caretaking. âCan you just hold meâŚplease?â your timid voice makes Bucky fold instantly, he is quick to crawl onto the bed and hold you tight.Â
You let out a content sigh, as if all of the worries of the day washes off of you, while you rest in Buckyâs arms. âI got you, dollâ Bucky whispers into your hair, as he caresses your back. His sweet words make you sink deeper into the embrace, it makes it more difficult to keep your eyes open.Â
On a whim, just before you think youâre about to fall asleep, you bring Buckyâs hand up to you and give it a small kiss. If you werenât as content and exhausted from the day, youâd most definitely felt his quickening heartbeat beneath you. As you drift off into sleep, Bucky continues to talk to you, mumble reassurances and comforts. He places a kiss to the crown of your head, swearing to always keep you safe.

You had just finished unloading the rented uhaul, leaving a small cardboard box tower standing on the side of New York. Your back already aches by the thought of having to carry them all up the three flights of stairs leading to your new apartment. Tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear you stack two boxes and make your way up. Opening the door with no hands and an armful of boxes seemed to be the first challenge of many, but you managed. The stairway seemed more narrow now, it didnât take long before your grunts of frustration could be heard from a few flights up. When the first set of boxes had been placed in the empty living room, you hurried back down, hoping the abandoned boxes on the street were still there.Â
A quiet routine started, two boxes at a time, leaving your arms more sore with every step up the stairs. With just a couple boxes left, two in your arms and three still on the sideway, you managed to keep the frustrations at bay while the rebellious strands of hair told a different story.Â
You had been struggling with the door into the apartment complex for a couple minutes, stubbornness making you continue trying with the boxes still in hand. Bucky had seen the struggle from further away, as heâd moved closer to the building. Furrowed in amusement at the scene, the two boxes threatened to fall, while you balanced them trying to use your pinky to open the door. Bucky had watched for a little while, now standing only a few feet away from the spectacle, wondering when would be the right time to butt in.Â
âYou need some help with that?â you hadnât registered his presence and his sudden comment made you jump slightly, causing the boxes to start tumbling over. A big, metal, hand caught them before they hit the ground. You turned to look at who had made you jump, and your heart beat half out of your chest. His striking blue eyes and reserved but amused smile caused your heart to beat for a completely different reason, which left you lost for words, just for a minute. âThanksâ you breathed out and rolled your eyes in embarrassment, âI think this door has it out for me, I canât open itâ. Bucky chuckled at your comment, keeping eye contact as he shifted the two boxes, now only holding them with his metal arm. He reached behind you, moving you ever so slightly and politely, and with a quick tug opened the door.Â
âItâs tricky, youâll get used to itâ he gestured for you to move inside, and you did, feeling more embarrassed at his ease. âThanks⌠again, Iâm lucky you know how to open it, you know, if it takes a while to get used toâ you stuttered a bit, feeling heat rush to your cheeks. You moved forward, your arms out toward the boxes, ready to take them from him. With a shift he, knowingly, diverted your attempt at taking back the boxes. âWhere can I put the boxes?â his old-fashioned attitude made you chuckle slightly and shake your head. âItâs okay, I can get them up myself, but thanks for the offerâ you were quick to dismiss, which made Bucky furrow his eyebrows slightly. âItâs fine, I donât mind it really, besides I live on the 4th floor, let me take them some of the wayâ he offered.Â
âI canât ask you to do that, you already helped me twiceâ you declined, and this time you grabbed the boxes out of his arms. He saw you struggle slightly with the new weight in your arms, and the stubborn look heâd seen outside the building returned to your eyes. With small grunts and muttering, you turned towards the stairs and started your climb. âThanks for the help, friendly neighborâ you quipped from over your shoulder, a laugh stuck in your throat. Bucky shook his head in amusement, looking back out the door seeing the three boxes with scribbled handwriting spelling out what he assumed was your name.Â
You had just gotten to the third floor, now outside your door you turned to put down the boxes, to open the door. But someone beat you to it. The glinting of metal made you laugh, but as you turned around you saw the three boxes he was holding with ease. Your eyes shamelessly caught how his bicep flexed, as you met his eyes, a patient smirk was painted on his lips. âAfter you, dollâ the nickname made your cheeks burn a little harder, and you scurried inside to put down the boxes. As soon as they had left your hands, you smoothed out your shirt and tried to tame your hair to the best of your ability. âThank you, you really didn't have to do thatâ you smiled, as you stepped a bit closer to him, still feeling a little flustered.Â
âOf course, I'm happy to help, Y/nâ he said, chuckling slightly at your raised brows when he mentioned your name. A small point of his finger toward the boxes, makes you hum in understanding. The silence lingered for a small second, until Bucky made a shift move towards the door. âI better get going, good luck unpackingâ he walked outside, turning around to meet you with a smile you wanted to study up close, âname's Buckyâ. Just as abruptly as he'd appeared, just as abruptly had he left. The door now gaping with an empty hallway as his footsteps echoed in the background. You were screwed, your very attractive, and a gentleman, neighbor lived just above you. With a click the door locked, just in sync with the sigh that left your lips.
Settling in had gone mostly without any big drama, if you donât count the many struggles with the door. Now at 9.12pm you had gotten home from your office job, finally getting tired of moving around the same table lamp trying to get a lid room. The electrician wasnât coming for another week, and another week was exactly the time it would take for you to crash out over this. After searching through a couple boxes you finally found your drill and started sending a little prayer out to the universe. You lined up the screw, hoping you werenât hitting anything important in the ceiling, and started drilling. The loud noise made you flinch slightly, causing the ladder to shake a little. Another sharp inhale, coughing lightly at the dust gathering in the wind. Another attempt at drilling the screws in the ceiling, only for it to end up bent and flinging out of its position. You grumbled loudly and huffed, you werenât going to let this get to you. But when you audibly started yelling and almost tossed the drill, you accepted defeat and climbed down the ladder.Â
Three short knocks at the door made you freeze. Seeing the clock, on a weekday, you worried another resident had complaints to make. Through the peephole you saw the same pair of eyes you hadnât been able to get out of your head the past week. As you opened the door you were greeted by a warm, but tired, smile. âHi Bucky, can I help you with something?â you tried to steady your voice, and the internal cringing of worry that he was the neighbor coming to complain.
âHi dollâ your knees weakened slightly, âif you wanted to talk to me you couldâve just said so, no need for you to try and drill a hole through my floorâ. Shut eyes and pinching your nose bridge was all you could respond at first, feeling embarrassed at the situation. âIâm so sorry Bucky, I just got so fed up with not having proper lighting, I guess I kind of forgot the timeâ you fiddled with your fingers, glancing up at him. âSince you got all the way down here, can I at least see the finished result?â he chuckled, but seemed to quickly become aware of the fact he just shamelessly invited himself into your apartment.Â
âOf course- well⌠You wonât be able to see it, since, no lights and I apparently canât be trusted with power toolsâ the joke made Bucky let out an airy laugh. You stepped aside and gestured for him to enter, you both made your way over to the lamp, inspecting it seriously. âWhereâs the drill?â Bucky asked, not looking away from the discarded lamp on the floor. With a little shrug you pointed to where the drill was buried in manuals and broken screws. Before you had time to ask why, Bucky had already climbed up the ladder with the drill in hand.Â
âWhat are you doing, Bucky!?â you exclaimed as you held the ladder, trying to steady it for him. He looked down at you, damn, why did he have to look so good from above, your mind was killing you. Your cheeks heating up caused a smirk to slip its way onto his lips. âIâm fixing your lampâ Bucky sounded like he had just said the most obvious thing in the world, almost making you feel crazy for asking. âI can see that! But why?â you laughed in disbelief as he started drilling the holes, he answered without looking down at you. âHow else would I get to see your pretty face?â you thanked god for the dimly lit room, you were sure your cheeks would be bright red, maybe you wouldnât need a lamp after all?
Your silence made Bucky look down, your wide eyes were answer enough, which made him chuckle. âBesides, if I ever want to get some sleep, it would help you wonât be drilling holes through my floorâ this made you snicker, helping the tension release from your shoulders. A mischievous glint crossed your eyes. âSo Iâll just have to keep tinkering with the drill and you will come running?â you gave a pause for dramatic thinking effect, âthatâs definitely notedâ. Now it was Buckyâs turn to shy away and keep his eyes focused on the drill and screws, and not let his beating heart affect his balance. He kept working for a few more minutes, and at last he climbed down the ladder, setting down the drill.Â
The grey shirt clung tightly to his body, as he brushed himself clean from the dust. You werenât afraid to admit you had slightly wandering eyes. âYou should probably test out the light, make sure it actually worksâ he commented, making you flick the switch and light shine up your apartment. âIt works!â the exclamation made Bucky huff a laugh and look up to see your bright smile, âthank you so much Bucky!â. Instinctively you pulled him into a quick hug, which made Bucky tense up and you realize the boundary you mightâve crossed. You pulled back from the hug, and got ready to apologize but Bucky beat you to it. âItâs no worries, as I said, Iâm happy to helpâ Bucky kept on replaying the hug in his mind, âand next time, you can just come knockâ.Â
With an enthusiastic nod you giggled slightly, âIâll have to start paying you for your work soonâ. Bucky dismissed the joke, he started moving toward the door. âConsider it a welcome gift from a friendly neighborâ you followed him to your door. âRoger that, Buckyâ you joked, and he laughed, and suddenly your knees were like jello again. âIâll see you around Y/nâ you nodded, âsweet dreams, dollâ, and with that had he left again. Leaving you to deal with jelly knees and a thundering heart. Â
A couple of days go by with small smiles and even smaller hiâs exchanged whenever your ways crossed in the stairway but nothing more. Thatâs until a Saturday afternoon when you mustered up enough courage to walk up to Buckyâs door. The smell of failed, and burned, baked goods linger slightly in your hair, and the two beers in hand was the second best alternative. A deep breath is followed by two knocks on his door, and a second later he is standing in the doorway.Â
âHiâ you fidget slightly as you hold up the beers as explanation, âI tried baking cookies, and uh, failed, so think of this as a âthank youâ beerâ. His smile widened in time with your rambling, and as you put the two beers in his hands, he moved to the side. âDo you wanna come in?â his nod, a gesture of invitation, but he continued talking when he saw you looking a bit dumbfounded, âitâs kind of sad to drink alone, besides I wouldnât mind the companyâ. With that he walked deeper into his apartment, leaving you standing for a minute before you hurried in behind him, closing the door on your way.
âThanks again for your help, I think I wouldâve made the whole building collapse if Iâd continued trying to hang my lampâ you giggle bashfully and grab the open beer Bucky hands you. You take in the living room, itâs bare, not even just for a guy. A two person couch standing against a wall, on the other side a TV propped onto a small coffee table. Underneath documents and books is a dinner table, which you guessed wasnât being used often, by the state of it. Bucky saw you taking in his place, heat creeping in at the base of his neck. âYeah, youâre welcome, howâs the move in going?â he asked, politely directed your eyes away from his slightly depressing living room. The one âthank youâ beer turned into two, and another after that, as you ended up talking for a few hours on the couch.Â
â-and then he hit me square in my face!â Bucky had just finished telling you about a training session heâd have with Sam. He was careful not to mention his name, not wanting to talk about his work. Bucky hoped you had never heard of him, at least not in the Avengers context, but knowing his reputation you most definitely had. âIt must be a demanding job you have, I canât imagineâ your earnest voice tugged at his heart strings, it almost sounded like concern. âItâs fine, as long as I get the job done, and with the best outcome for everyoneâ he dismissed your analyzing eyes, his own too busy staring at the bottle in his hands.
âAnd for youâ your voice broke his trance, and when he looked back up your eyes met his instantly, âyou have to take care of yourself out thereâ. Bucky took you in, sitting in his dimly lit living room, being concerned about his well-being. It flustered him to the point of no words. Sensing the sincere moment you placed your hand on top of his arm, squeezing it a little bit, trying to bring him back down. As you went to take your hand back, his hand grabbed yours and held it. âThank youâ he said, now staring at his hand holding yours. âOf course Buckyâ, your voice now timid and shy, he saw your cheeks heating up slightly, and your lips flare up in a rosy color.Â
The sudden ring of a phone made you both jump, your hand clutching your heart as you let out an airy laugh. You saw Buckyâs phone light up with the name âSamâ, alongside a picture of him in a compromising position. Bucky awkwardly looked at his phone, he let it ring out, until Sam got impatient and stopped trying. âSorry âbout thatâ his sheepish smile made you forget your sudden scare, as you shook your head, âdonât worry about itâ you reassured.Â
Bucky reached his hand over to yours, slowly, he tested the water, letting you retreat if you changed your mind. Just as he was about to touch your hand, the phone lit up again, Sam calling again. In your flustered mind, you realized what the time was and a sudden feeling of overstaying settled in your stomach. âUhm, I should⌠get goingâ your hesitant announcement came alongside you standing awkwardly by the couch. You swear you saw a disappointed shimmer in Buckyâs eyes but you tried not to think too far ahead of yourself. âSure, uh, thanks for the beerâ Bucky cringed at his words, they definitely left out all the other things he wouldâve wanted to thank her for. You hurried towards the door, and opened it just as Bucky arrived behind you. Turning around and meeting his eyes, Bucky realized how closed heâd actually been standing to you. âThanks for tonight, it was niceâ you looked away, heat rising to your cheeks, which you blamed the alcohol. Bucky agreed, âget home safe, dollâ and with that it was your turn to leave the doorway quickly, leaving Bucky wanting more and gazing at the spot you had just been standing.
It was late one night, you were on your way home from meeting with a couple of friends, and Bucky had been standing outside the apartment building. He looked in his head, furrowed brows and a half-smoked cigarette that had been lit a long time ago. Your steps slowed down, as you approached carefully. âHey thereâ his eyes snapped to you, his eyes dark and set in a deep exhaustion. He grunted a greeting. âLong day at work?â you settled onto the brick steps besides him, tugging your coat tighter to your body. âSomething like thatâ he settled down beside you, tossing the cigarette into a bin.Â
âDâyou want to talk about it?â you puffed his arm with your shoulder, making him give you a tired smile. âNo, but thanks for the offerâ you nodded, returning to a solemn silence, observing the bustling city life in front of you. That was until something in Bucky woke up, maybe from the tiredness of the day, or the feelings heâd been questioning and working through his head every day.Â
âWhat are you even doing?â his question came out harsher than intended, and you just blinked up at him in confusion, not understanding the question. âI mean⌠I just help you a little, nothing anybody wouldnât do, and you bring me beer and sit on my couch longer than any one ever hasâ he explained, his eyebrows furrowing. As did yours.
âYeah, you did help me, and I wanted to thank you for that⌠But I also wanted to get to know youâ his eyes let you know that, that answer wasnât enough for him. âI guess I thought you were worth knowing since you helped me so much, that takes a good manâ you placed a hand on his shoulder. Unfortunately, after the day heâd had, being reminded of his failures and past mistakes, his body reacted before his mind could. Bucky quickly stood up, making you drop your hand, a hand dragging over his face. He sighed in frustration until he turned around to face you.
âYou know who I am right?â you had thought it was a rhetorical question at first, but he expected an answer from you. âYeah, I know youâre Bucky, uhm, that you worked with Captain Americaâ you stuttered, your mind racing due to his sudden change in behaviour. Bucky scoffs. It hits you directly in your gut, without you truly understanding why. âIf you know that, you know thatâs not only who I am, what I didâ his glare now becoming too much for you to meet, you have to avert your eyes. âI know, you had to do some things against your willâ your voice is hush, uncomfortable due to the energy.
âI killed people, Y/n, Iâm not a good manâ his voice is icy and his stature seems frozen to his spot, just out of your reach. You donât know how to respond, but you shake your head in confusion. âI donât know if you pity me, or if you wanted to get a closer look at the spectacleâ now youâre furrowing your brows even more, youâre worried they might get stuck, âI donât know what youâre doing or whyâ. Now it was your turn to stand up, walking over to him, your stubbornness overtaking. âI donât pity you, and Iâm not trying to get a front row seat to some show, thatâs the stupidest thing youâve ever said, Buckyâ you canât wrap your head around his thoughts, âI like you, I want to get to know youâ your frustrations seeps into your voice.Â
At first you think youâve reached Bucky, but then you sense the dismissal in his eyes. His slight head shake and his down-turned mouth. âThatâs not right, it canât be⌠Iâm not stupid, Y/nâ his voice is laced with venom, âthereâs a catch, there always isâ. Now itâs your turn to shake your head, as you try to control the frustrations welling up in your body, your shaking hands giving you away.
âYouâre being unfair, Buckyâ you couldnât look him in the eyes, the tension overwhelming you, âhow dare you think I have some ill intentions, Iâm pouring my heart out to you and you reject it? Why?â you paused, giving yourself time to breathe. âItâs not fair that you twist my actions, when all Iâve done is be nice to you, Iâve shown you no reason to be insecureâ you feel your eyes sting, and curse yourself for it, not wanting to feel weak in front of him. âI want you, Bucky, but you have to realize it for yourselfâ with that you turn around, and the first tear drops to your cheek. You tug a couple times at the door until it gives way for you to hurriedly climb your stairs, wanting to be far away from him right now.
Another week passed, this time, when your eyes met you would turn to look at the floor in front of you. Bucky had been cursing himself ever since heâd heard you sniffle as you walked away, realizing the stress of the day had gotten to him. Not only that, but itâd made him question your acts of kindness. Bucky had been too nervous to talk to you, worried you would turn him down before he could apologize. This had led him to stand in front of your door, for several minutes, many times a day, this past week.Â
This day, you were on your way out, when you were met with him and Sam, walking upstairs and taking up the entire stairway. Wanting to be polite you stuttered a small âhiâ, but your voice was so timid you wondered if they had even heard it. The sound of your voice made Buckyâs focus shift entirely onto you, stopping mid-sentence in the conversation heâd just had with Sam. Samâs eyebrows raised in confusion until he saw you.Â
âHi Y/nâ Buckyâs voice was surprised, he had thought that you would ignore him if your paths had crossed. Your eyes met, his clear as day displayed regret, it was too much and you had to look away. The feelings from that night resurfacing all too well. Bucky was about to say something more, when a booming voice from beside him interrupted his train of thought.
âY/n? As in the Y/n?â Sam was smirking, looking between the both of you. Buckyâs jab to Samâs side only confirmed his theory, causing his smile to widen, as he stepped towards you. âIâm Sam, Buckyâs best buddyâ Bucky rolled his eyes at his antics, âIâve heard a lot about youâ. Now it was your turn to blush a deep crimson red, looking over at Bucky for answers, only being met with a confirming blush across his cheeks. âNice to meet you Samâ you politely shook his hand, before moving a bit further down the stairs, stopping awkwardly besides Bucky.Â
You looked at him expectantly, you didnât even know what you were waiting for, but the hope was burning inside of you. âItâs good to see youâ Bucky cringed at his own words, another minute passed and the staring was only dissolved due to Sam clearing his throat. âUhm, I better get⌠I need to go⌠Bye, Buckyâ you mumbled and hurried down the stairs, the outside air calling your name.Â
Inside the building Bucky stood looking back where youâd left, making Sam laugh at the man, he looked like a lost puppy. âThe day has come, a woman melted the winter soldierâ Sam grabs Buckyâs shoulder with excitement. Bucky just sighed before returning to face his friend, âI messed it up Samâ. Sam deadpanned, already done with whatever had happened. His eyebrows raised in question, waiting for Bucky to continue. âAfter that long day, last week⌠I came back here and met Y/n outsideâ he wasnât proud of how heâd acted, âI was stressed out, and I⌠confronted her about this, and I kinda blew up on her and she leftâ.Â
Sam shook his head in disbelief but turned to his friend, wanting to help. âYou talked to her after that, right?â the silence worked as an answer, âBucky, are you dumb?â. Bucky was about to protest, not wanting to hear Samâs sass. âI saw the way she looked at you, she gave you a million chances to reach out, and if you donât youâll loose the thing that have made you slightly less grumpy these last few weeksâ Sam preached to him, while he just nodded, already knowing he had to do something.Â
âI know, I knowâŚâ Bucky searched for his words, âBut she could do better, she deserves better than meâ. Sam dismissed him immediately, âNuh-uh, donât start with that self-depricating talk, you deserve good too, and she clearly decided on you, now you just gotta make it up to herâ and with that Sam walked into Buckyâs apartment. The hangout turned into a guiding session in how to make it up to you, and Sam rooting for him as he went home.Â
A few days later, two knocks rang out against your door. Before opening it you saw it was late, and considered letting it go unanswered. But as soon as she saw Bucky through the peephole, she opened the door, trying not to show her surprise and slight excitement. âHi, Y/nâ Buckyâs controlled voice had a slight tremble to it, âcan we talk?â. You nodded and led him into your living room and plopped down on the couch, motioning for him to do the same.Â
âIâm sorry for how I blew up at you, I shouldnât have done thatâ Bucky starts, his eyes fixated on his hands, âIâm sorry I didnât believe what you said, or didnât want to believe itâ. You couldnât hold yourself back anymore, your hands grabbed his, effectively stopping his fidgeting and making his eyes meet yours. âI get it Bucky, I just didnât want you to think all my kindness had some scheming intentâ he nodded, gripping your hands tighter, never wanting to let go. âMy thoughts clouded my mind, I should have talked to you instead of letting my mind wanderâ at his words, you caressed his hands softly, âyou definitely shouldâve just talked to me⌠But Iâm happy you decided to do it nowâ.Â
He feels himself be swallowed up under your gaze, wanting to stay there forever. Without thinking he moved closer to you, pushing a few pieces of loose hair behind your ear. The color returned to your cheeks and you were scared he might be able to hear your wild heartbeat. Bucky could feel your breath getting caught in your throat, his own heart running wild, matching yours. He leaned in, his breath touching your lips, âcan I kiss you?â his voice just above a whisper, filled with a certain hunger. Instead of answering him with words, you lean forwards to meet his lips. His hand cupping your cheek, as you grab onto his arm, needing the support if your heart was going to give up on you.
When you finally pulled apart, your bodies were up against each other, and without thinking you leaned into him. In between kisses you ended up lying in his arms, cramped up on the couch, resting your head against his firm chest. His human hand weaving through your hair, while he admired his girl. âWhat took you so long?â you broke the silence, glancing up at Bucky. âI had a lot of courage to gather upâ he smiles softly at you, seeing your lips turn into a smirk. âI could tell, if you hadnât knocked today I wouldâve gone up to youâ his eyebrows raised in confusion, âI couldnât keep seeing your hurt face on my ring camera, it was getting out of handâ you joke, making his cheeks turn deep red at the realization.

(A/N: First Sam Wilson fic! Goddamn Anthony Mackie is gorgeous and charming. And who doesn't love the way he hypes up/flusters his ~bestie~ Sebastian Stan? Also I adore the story he told about Betty White telling him that he makes her wish she was 40 years younger. Enjoy!)

You and Steve had gotten together in the fall of 2013. It was a mutual and soft confession that finally brought the two of you to make it official. The other Avengers started referring to the two of you as 'Mom and Dad', much to the both of yours' faux dismay. In truth, you both loved it. Because it really did feel like the quirky and often dysfunctional team were your kids. That you also sometimes wanted to murder.
You became fast friends with Sam Wilson, and you were Steve's rock when Bucky turned up as the Winter Soldier. Steve loved you more than he ever thought he could, once he saw you interacting with his damaged best friend so softly. You ended up being a huge help in bringing the Bucky he knew, back to himself.
Steve also loved listening to you and Sam banter back and forth like it was second nature; you'd often catch your boyfriend smiling fondly at you in those moments, and you always made a remark about Steve being on your side, rather than Sam's. Steve would put his hands up in defense, and say he's got enough self-preservation instincts to not get between one of your arguments.
But, it seemed that nothing in the super soldier's life could ever be simple or perfect. Your boyfriend saw the way Sam looked at you. The way he smiled at you when you gave him a witty retort. He knew that Sam would never make a move or try anything with you; he cared too much about the both of you to screw up your beautiful relationship.
Although, Steve often wondered if it really was a beautiful relationship. Yes, he was happy, yes he was in love with you, yes he could see having a perfect family with you. But at night, when he was dreaming, it wasn't you he was dancing with. It was her.
He felt guilty, but it wasn't like he had a chance with her now. It wasn't like he could do the responsible thing and let you down gently to go be with her. So he stayed. He gave you the best life he could.
And you loved it. You didn't have a clue that he was still yearning for another woman, whom he'd known for all of two years, more than seven decades ago. Sure, you were a little put off when you'd always wake up with the spot beside you empty, walking through the tower to find your boyfriend already on his morning run. But you'd always tell yourself it was because of his time in the army. You weren't exactly wrong.
You remained at Steve's side through the Blip; being one of the few of his closest friends who wasn't turned into dust. Something shifted in your relationship, but it was difficult for you to pinpoint what. He wasn't as affectionate, and he didn't comfort you as much as you comforted him, anymore. It was always you holding him on the couch, or reassuring him about his ability to lead.
Rarely did he hold you, or reassure you. Even when you were missing your parents and siblings and friends that had been taken unfairly in the Blip.
But he stayed.
And you convinced yourself that was enough. That it meant that he was still yours to have. That it was just a moment in your long, loving, destined relationship.
Still, you weren't completely oblivious. You knew what his intentions were the second he volunteered to be the one to return the stones.
You stood far enough back from your three best friends that you couldn't hear what they were saying. And yet you knew, they were saying their goodbyes. Your arms were wrapped around yourself, attempting to hold yourself together.
You watched as Sam and Bucky each took a step back from your boyfriend, turning back to look at you with sad little smiles on their faces. And you felt instinctively drawn in when Steve looked past them to you, a similarly sad smile on his face.
Walking up to him, you wrap your arms around his torso tightly, laying the side of your face against his chest as you hear your two friends give the couple some space.
Speaking with a wobbly voice, you ask a question you already know the answer to.
"You're coming back, right?" You feel Steve's chest deflate slightly as he sighs, bringing a hand up to run over your hair.
"SweetheartâŚ." He whispers, and you crack.
Quiet sobs wrack your body, and you press your forehead into his chest, gripping your fingers in his shirt. You feel him press a kiss on the top of your head.
Pulling back to look up at him through blurred eyes, you ask a second question. Again, you already know the answer. But you need to hear him say it.
"It was never going to be me, was it?" Your voice breaks.
He gives you a sympathetic and sad smile, before shaking his head slightly.
"I don't think so."
Your forehead presses into his chest once last time, for barely a second, before you're removing your arms from around his waist. Wiping roughly at your face, you don't even look him in the eyes as you say a weak:
"Goodbye, Steve."
Turning away, you ignore his call of your name, starting to speed walk away. As you pass between Bucky and Sam, they both gently reach a hand out to you, saying a quiet "hey" or your nickname. But you wrench your arms out of their grips, and keep walking. You need to get out of there before you lose the last of your dignity; running back and gripping to the man you love like a koala, refusing to let go, and begging him not to leave you.
You're convinced you're dying. And for a long while, you think maybe that wouldn't be so bad.
-
That night, Sam comes home to his apartment, not surprised in the slightest when he sees the TV on, and finds you wrapped in a hoodie and two blankets on his couch. You're awake and your eyes are open, but you don't look conscious. Not really.
He sighs lightly, taking the shield back to his room, and slips it into his closet before you can see it. That would be too much, too soon.
When he returns to his living room, he stares at your unmoving form for a minute, before walking around the couch. You feel him gently lift your head while supporting your neck, before you feel the cushions dip beneath you. He sets your head on his thigh, and rests his hand on your shoulder heavily. Grounding you.
Running a hand over his face, Sam is feeling lost. His best friend of years, and a historical hero, just handed him a hunk of metal with more meaning, significance, and history than any one person could comprehend. Anyone but Steve. And now, Sam was coming home to the heartbroken shell of the aforementioned historical hero's ex lover, whom he'd been instructed to take care of by the man.
Sam was fucking pissed at Steve, to be quite honest. Yes, for the bigger-picture reasons, like how he had just expected Sam to take on the mantle with nothing but a 'gee thanks man!', or how he'd left all of his friends and family and the life that he'd made here, for something so far in the past.
But honestly? It was the bitter, much-too-personal reasons that were wrecking him the most. Steve had left you.
You; the most admirable, strong, funny, beautiful, skilled, kind, and perfect woman in existence, were left a fucking hollow shell that Sam was now expected to piece back together.
And Sam would do it. Without hesitation. He'd pick up every piece, let the edges break his skin. He'd clean and wipe off the ash and blood, and stick the shards together with anything and everything he could find. He'd be there to hold you, reassure you, polish your seams when they were getting dull.
But the thing that almost made Sam punch his elderly best friend in the face, in the middle of that park in broad-daylight?
It was the way that Steve expected him to do it without his feelings for you becoming involved.
It was the way that Steve had known about Sam's love for you the whole time, and never said a damn thing about it. It was the way that Steve fucking Rogers had trusted Sam not to come between your relationship, but didn't trust him enough to be yours, even if the super soldier wasn't in the same fucking Century anymore.
Obviously, Sam knew he couldn't tell you about his feelings for you for a long damn time. That would be manipulative, predatory, and just a dick-move in general.
You were broken by a man you were solely devoted to for almost 10 years, not even 4 hours ago; him confessing that he loved you that whole time would cause nothing but hurt, confusion, and you probably wouldn't trust him anymore.
Sam was brought out of his thoughts when he felt his hand on your shoulder rise slightly, before falling back down as you let out a heavy sigh.
The man beside you swallows. He probably shouldn't talk about it right now. Fuck, he knows he shouldn't talk about it right now. For some people, talking about a traumatic event within the first 24 hours after said event, could cause lasting negative effects. More so than the trauma itself.
Usually, Sam found it best to wait until client was stabilized (following a nightmare, or inciting event) to talk about what happened.
But right now, Sam needed to talk about it. And he didn't think Bucky would be so compassionate about Sam's newfound hatred for the best friend Bucky had since the 40s.
So Sam talked to you.
"He passed down the shield to me." He felt you freeze under his hand, causing him to rub a thumb over your fabric-covered shoulder in a repetitive motion.
Sam didn't expect you to respond, so he kept talking.
"Said it was mine, now. Acted like I deserve it."
You remain silent.
"I asked him if he'd always been such an idiot and I just hadn't noticed. He didn't say anything else, he just⌠laughed." He swallows, letting his head fall back against the back of the couch, closing his eyes tightly.
"I told him I'd do my best. But I can't⌠I can't help but feel that my best will never be good enough. It'll never be as good as his⌠decent, even."
Sam feels your head lift from his leg, and he slowly brings his head up, opening his eyes to see you already looking at him.
You placed your hand firmly on his knee.
"You do deserve it, Sam. The shield, the opportunity, the gloryâŚ." Sam chuckles humorlessly, and you shake your head, silencing him.
"Your best will always be good enough. And⌠we're entering a new era. Nothing is the same as it was 5 years ago, and it will never be the same again. We need new leaders; new perspectives and new choices. What worked back then won't work now, and we need to act and react accordingly." He's looking at you like you're preaching the words of a perfect world.
"St-⌠he did the right thing. Giving you the shield. You're the only person for the job, and the fact that he himself was the one to give it to you should tell you as much." You can't bring yourself to say his name.
Sam is speechless, his eyes glossy with tears as he stares into your eyes.
"You'll do amazing things, Sam. And I'll be right by your side as you do them."
He allows a small smile to form on his lips, but he resists the urge to reach his hand up to cup your cheek.
"Thank you." He whispers.
Instead of replying, you adjust yourself to lay on your side, wrapping your arms around his waist and laying the side of your head against him.
The two of you sit in the quiet for a while; the only sound being the TV playing a rerun of some 90s sitcom.
"It would have been our 10 year anniversary, next week." You whisper.
Sam sighs.
"I know."
-
"Did we come here to talk, or?"
Your eyes shoot up to glare at the gray haired man sitting across from you. Your arms that are crossed over your chest tighten, and your hot chocolate sits long-forgotten on the table in front of you.
"You came here to talk. I came here to-⌠I came here." You bite out, and he smiles.
"Still as fiery as ever." He comments, and you have to resist the urge to reach across the table and strangle the senior citizen.
"Did you have something to tell me, or did you just want to torture me some more?" Steve blinks at you, before setting down the fork he was using to take bites of the coffee cake he had ordered before you got there.
You had been late, because at first you didn't think you were going to go at all. But you needed to see him again. Needed some closure, if you were allowed it.
"I'm sorry." Your jaw clenches and your eyes scrunch shut. You let your head drop with your chin against your chest.
You honestly don't know what the fuck to say. And anything you tried to say would undoubtedly come out as a sob, which you wouldn't let him see. You wouldn't waste any more time crying over the man in front of you.
"I don't regret my choice. I know I did the right thing-"
"For you." You mumble, but he catches it. Maybe the serum made it so that when his hearing started to fail, it was starting at super-human, and only dropped to an average level; that of younger folks hearing abilities.
"For both of us." He corrected, and you look back up at him, daring him to explain how in the hell he came to that conclusion.
"I was leading you on for years, at that point. You deserved-" You scoff roughly.
"Jesus Christ, Steven." Running a hand over your face, partially to hide back the angry tears that were now building in your eyes.
"What?" He asks, genuinely.
"Fuck, I don't know, Steve, maybe it's fucking news to me that you were just leading me on. I thought what we had was more than you leading me on." You choke out, and he sighs.
"Of course it was more than that. I loved you, and you know that." Shaking your head, you wipe your eyes briskly.
The two of you are silent for a moment.
"So, has anybody⌠caught your eye?" Your jaw grinds again.
"You mean: has anybody managed to fill the hollow void in my chest that you left behind that day?" He shakes his head.
"I mean, have you moved on?" You scoff in disbelief, looking out the window to your left for a short moment, before standing up. Grabbing your jacket from the back of your chair, you refuse to look at him anymore as you say:
"You don't have the fucking right to know anything about my life anymore."
You hear him sigh heavily, but you're already at the door. Grabbing the handle, you open it, pausing when you hear him call your name after you. It's too much like the day he left.
"At least tell me who he is!"
Your head slowly turns to look at him, your expression cold. You don't hesitate.
"Captain America."
And you leave.
You leave the old man that you once loved, sitting shocked in a quiet coffee shop, all alone.
-
You let out a breath of relief as you step inside the front door of your home, shucking off your jacket, not caring to hang it on the hook to your left. It falls to the floor, and you kick off your shoes next to it.
Shuffling your socked feet along the hardwood, you follow the sound of 70s music to the kitchen, finding Sam standing over the stove, stirring a pot. Inhaling deeply, you practically melt at the delicious and comforting smell of garlic and onions.
Your boyfriend didn't seem to hear you come in, and he startles slightly as you wrap your arms around his waist from behind, pressing the side of your face to his back.
One of his warm hands rests over yours, intertwining your fingers, as his other reaches to turn down the burner to low.
Twisting in your arms, he lets go of your hand and rubs your back instead, while holding your head against his chest. He gives you gentle kisses on the top of your head.
He doesn't ask you how it went. He doesn't ask you how you're feeling, or what it was like seeing him like that. He doesn't need to.
"I love you." You mumble into his shirt. He kisses your head once more.
"I love you, baby." He murmurs so genuinely that your heart aches.
"You know that I love you for reasons all unrelated to him, right? You know I didn't just fall for you because you were there when he wasn't-" Sam gently grabs both of your cheeks, and tilts your head up, capturing your lips in a firm kiss.
When he finally pulls away, he rests his forehead against yours, looking into your eyes without hesitation.
"Of course I know that. I really do. I know that you don't love me just because I was there, or because it was easy or convenient, or even because I was one of his best friends. I know that you love me for⌠untainted reasons, even if you don't seem to know that yourself sometimes."
He gently wipes the tears falling from your eyes, and he kisses you again, softer this time.
"And I sincerely hope that you know that I love you, seeing as it was far from easy or convenient to get to where I am with you, but that I'd do it a million times over again. No doubt."
You smile at him, and pout your lips exaggeratedly, asking for another kiss. He chuckles warmly, and fulfills your request.
"I love you." You whisper against his lips, and a hum rumbles through his chest.
"Love you more."
When he pulls away this time, he has a teasing smirk on his face.
"You know what I'm beginning to think?" Your eyes narrow at him playfully.
"What?"
"I think maybe you have a type." Raising one eyebrow at him in suspicion, his smirk widens.
"I think you just like a man in a red, white, and blue uniform." You gasp dramatically and smack his chest, causing him to burst out laughing.
He grabs your hand and kisses your knuckles tenderly, and gratefully.
Because the both of you know that if it had been anyone else to make such a ill-timed joke, they would have been dead on the floor already.

Y/n had worked as Valentina de Fontaineâs personal assistant for two years now. She had worked hard to get the job, and even harder proving her worth to Valentina and her team. Y/n wanted to make a change, and Valentina had been her way forward with that wish. That had been until Y/n slowly noticed the flaws in Valentina's plans, and the more calculated reasons behind them. Most recently the lurking possibility of Valentinaâs impeachment had brought on a new wave of problems, problems that Y/n in the end, most likely, had to sort out. One of the solutions to this impeachment problem had come in the form of a fundraiser party, which Y/n attended now. She stood silently against a wall, close enough for Valentina to easily reach her, but out of sight from the important guests. Her tablet gripped tightly by her side, as she scanned her surroundings. Soon sensing the presence of congressman James Barnes by her side.
âQuite the showâ Bucky quipped with a small scoff, clearly not buying the act. âYes, Ms de Fontaine worked hard on setting it all up in timeâ Y/n said quickly, as she looked over at the super soldier beside her. âWow, you almost sound like you didnât rehearse that before the partyâ Bucky smiled at her, reaching his hand out, âIâm Bucky by the wayâ. Y/n smiled tightly and shook his firm, human, hand, âY/n, and I know who you are Congressman Barnes, I saw you at the hearingâ. They both looked towards Valentina, who had just let out a loud laugh, perfectly working the politicians and business people around her. âPlease, just call me Buckyâ he huffed slightly at the title, not entirely comfortable in the new role.Â
âWhat can I help you with Congressman Barnes?â Y/n asked, a slightly smirk appearing at his hidden frustration from the title. âWell, I just wanted to let you know youâre not dependent on Valentina. She might be powerful, but I can help you, if youâre just willing to testify against herâ Bucky explained, stepping closer to Y/n, his tone laced with sincerity. Y/n shook her head with a chuckle, âIâm not going to go against Valentina, but it was a good tryâ. Bucky held her gaze until he broke it and fished out a small business card from his pocket. âI canât force you, but just remember, she canât force you eitherâ Bucky nodded towards Valentina, âcall me if you need anythingâ. Y/n hesitantly took the card, twirling it around, looking at the number. She looked back to Bucky, and as she was about to respond, she was cut off by Valentina clearing her throat as she stepped toward them.Â
âCongressman Barnes, what a surprise seeing you hereâ Valentina looked him up and down, âI thought you were busy having me impeachedâ. Bucky narrowed his eyes at the O.X.E. director, âI am, just wanted to see your final showâ. Valentina gave a composed chuckle at his words which made Y/n scoot closer to Valentina, sensing the tension and Valentinaâs disapproval at her chat with Bucky. âWell you enjoy yourself, but please donât bother my assistant while sheâs at workâ Valentina turned to Y/n motioning her to follow, but was interrupted by Bucky. âThanks for the talk Y/n, and good luck Ms. de Fontaineâ Bucky only held Y/nâs gaze as he talked, until he turned away and disappeared in the crowd.Â
Valentinaâs nails gripped into Y/nâs bare arm as she dragged her into a corner of the venue. âY/n you are not to talk to James, or any congressman for that matterâ Valentina let go of Y/nâs arm, but her gaze remained fixed on her, âI donât expect to have to keep reminding you of who is helping you move along?â. Y/n was quick to shake her head, âNo of course not Valentina! Congressman Barnes was being pushy about his case, nothing unexpectedâ. Valentina narrowed her eyebrows as if she was analyzing every word Y/n had just said. âAlright, if he tries to contact you, you come to me immediatelyâ Valentina demanded and Y/n agreed without hesitation. Valentina seemed appeased and smiled at Y/n. âGood⌠I have guests to greet, you need to stay alert, and let me know how it goes with the clean up assignmentâ Valentina nods at Y/n understandingly, and pats her arm lightly as she moves past Y/n and returns to socializing.Â
Y/n looks down at her tablet, security footage of the vault of all the proof needed to impeach Valentina. The heavy doors closed, and the group of four superhero misfits contained in the vault. Y/n furrow her brows in worry, wondering if it truly was for the better. She closed the tablet and looked back into the crowds, in a second her eyes met a pair of icy blue eyes that had been studying her, maybe throughout the whole conversation with Valentina. Y/n shuddered slightly and turned to leave her spot in the corner.Â
~ time skip ~
The vault had been broken out of, Yelena Belova, John Walker and Ava Starr had escaped. Though that was the least worrying thing right now, it had turned out that the vault had contained more than just secrets. The only survivor of the sentry project had been there, alive and embodying the results of the project. Y/n had seen him survive being gunned down, sheâd seen him fly far up in the sky only to come crashing down making a small crater in the desert they were in. Now Bob, as they had learned was his name, was being held in a room where Valentina was nurturing him awake and molding him into The Sentry.Â
Y/n had paced up and down a small corridor in the unfinished ex-Avengers tower, her head spinning with thoughts and worries. Sheâd dug into the files from the sentry project, sheâd heard Valentinaâs speech about controlling the unbeatable and godlike sentry form. It had made the past worries of Valentinaâs motives blow up at an even bigger scale. Y/n was sure this wasnât right anymore, they probably crossed that line long ago, but sheâd only been able to fully accept and see it now. Her hand had instinctively found its way to the small business card in her pocket. Quickly she pulled out her phone and dialled Buckyâs number, hoping he had meant what he said at the fundraiser.
âItâs Buckyâ he answered with a sigh, Y/n could hear bickering in the background, and it made her nervous, along with his sigh. âWho is this?â Bucky asked, which made Y/n realize how she hadnât said anything due to her mind racing. âItâs Y/nâ she said quietly, suddenly very aware of Valentina being in the same building as her. Buckyâs focus shifted quickly, from the bickering bunch to Y/nâs timid voice on the other end. âY/n⌠are you alright?â Bucky had hoped to hear from her, but now that he did it made her worry, especially with the current situation. âIâm⌠Iâm alright, itâs justâŚâ Y/n trailed off trying to gather her train of thoughts, âIâm not sure Valentina can be trusted anymoreâ. Bucky nodded to himself, glancing back at Valentina's ex-handymen, he pieced together what was supposed to have happened to them. âAre you with her right now?â Bucky asked, sensing Y/nâs hesitation. âNo, well, yes, sheâs in another room, with Bobâ Y/n explained, âBob?â Bucky questioned and Y/n could hear multiple groans and repeating of the name.
âYeah, Bob⌠He was the only survivor of the sentry project, and it looks like he got some powers, like worrying powers, and I think Valentina wants to use them in her favorâ Y/n rambled only stopping when she felt like her mind had calmed slightly. âOkay, where are you right now?â Bucky was the one pacing now, âIâm at the-â Y/n stopped abruptly when she heard the clicking of heels approaching. âSheâs on her way, just, you know how to track a phone, right? Right⌠Just track my phone and come, pleaseâ Y/n almost pleaded, she didnât give Bucky time to answer as she hung up and pocketed her phone. When Y/n whipped around she stood face to face with Valentina who shook her head disappointedly. âI really expected better from you Y/n⌠I saw a younger me in you, but I guess you just donât quite get itâ Valentina moved slightly to the side, and motioned for someone to enter. âY/n let me introduce you to someoneâ Valentina called out, and in came Bob, but not quite Bob as heâd been in the vault. His hair was blond and combed backwards, and a golden suit with a cape. âThis is The Sentry, my proudest creationâ Valentina smiled up at him, and then turned to Y/n with a stern look. âI thought better of you, but you have forgotten where your loyalty liesâ Valentina sighed and looked at Bob, âplease, take her away, she needs remindingâ.Â
Y/n shifted backwards as The Sentry stepped closer to her with precision. He reached for her arm and grabbed it firmly. âBob, you donât have to do this!â Y/n negotiated, while she began trying to tuck her arm free. âY/n, this will be easier if you just go along with me, I donât want to hurt youâ The Sentry explained as he started dragging her slightly by the arm. Y/n still struggled against his iron grip, but nothing faltered and she let out a cry of desperation. âValentina, please make him stop, Iâm- Iâm sorry, okay?â Y/n wasnât proud of her begging, but as she was being dragged by an unstoppable entity she couldnât see any other way. âYouâre embarrassing yourselfâ was the only thing Valentina said before walking away from the scene, leaving The Sentry to drag Y/n into a bare room. âYou just stay here for nowâ The Sentry said as he turned to leave, but Y/n rushed towards him, grabbing his arm. âBob, I donât know what she told you or did to you, but I just want to get away from here, please help meâ Y/n thought for a moment that sheâd been able to break through to him, the hint of recognition and confusion was quick to disappear almost as soon as it had been there. Now it was only replaced by a stern look. âI am The Sentry, not Bobâ and with that he yanked his arm away from her grip, and strode out of the room, closing the door behind him. A heavy sound confirmed her fear of being locked in the room.Â
Y/n was by the door in an instant despite knowing it was locked, she tugged at the handle until her hands ached slightly. âHey! Is anyone out there! Hey!â Y/n continued yelling, tugging and hitting the door, but it remained mockingly closed in her face. She paced around the room, silently praying that Bucky was tracking her phone at this very moment. Y/n pulled out her phone, trying to dial his number, multiple times to no avail. The room must have been interfering with her cell service, Y/n groaned in frustration as she slid down along one of the walls. It had been, what felt like hours, before she heard a commotion outside the door. Y/n shot up and returned to her place, banging on the door and yelling out, hoping that whoever was out there could help her. Then she heard a voice which made her sigh in relief.
âY/n?! Are you in there?â Bucky called out, on his side of the door a heavy bolt was placed against the door, but heâd heard the banging and yelling. âBucky! Please help me get out of here!â Y/n yelled back, desperate to be let out of her imprisonment. âOkay, okayâ Bucky got a closer look at the bolt and formed a plan, âY/n, I need you to step away from the doorâ. Y/n rushed to the other side of the room with wide eyes, for a second forgetting she was being rescued by a super soldier. Soon after she heard heavy thuds against the door, the clang of metal on metal, and after a few more thuds a loud ringing of metal breaking apart. The door swung open just as Bucky tossed, the now, torn up bolt. Y/n stood still in a quiet awe at the man in front of her, who also happened to be her current savior. Bucky moved quickly, entering the room and holding her by her arms. First he gave a look over her body, checking for any injuries, then he looked at her face. âAre you hurt?â Buckyâs eyes held a tinge of concern mixed with the adrenalin pumping through his veins. Y/n shook her head at first, âNo, no Iâm okay, she just locked me in hereâ she explained standing frozen in her spot.Â
By the door Y/n could now see the group of henchmen who used to work for Valentina. âBucky we have to move, now!â Yelena called out, she seemed to register Y/n as a non-threat, and moved further down the corridor. Yelena was followed by Ava, John Walker and at last a man in a red suit. âYou have to come with us, thatâs the only way I can make sure youâre safeâ Bucky said while pushing Y/n slightly behind him as they followed the group, his tone was apologetic and his eyes showed the same. Y/n gave a timid nod, not daring to discuss while being in a high alert situation. The five of them followed the long halls until they got to the big lounge and bar room. Y/n stopped in her tracks as she saw Valentina behind the bar, seemingly expecting them.
âNice for you to finally show up, what took you so long?â Valentina grins up at them until she locks eyes with Y/n, âI see, you had to grab my assistant⌠How thoughtful of youâ. Bucky steps in and shields Y/n behind his broad frame. âValentina we just want to get Bob, it doesnât have to end in a fightâ Buckyâs voice was carried in the unfurnished room. Valentina stepped out from the bar towards the group. âThat wonât be able to happen unfortunatelyâ she chuckles, âbut, what will be able to happen, is my big announcement of my proudest creation, all thanks to youâ. Valentina notices the shift in Yelena at the insinuation of Bob. âYou see, in a minute all the reporters across town will be here to witness how a lowlife group of ungroomed ex-heroes tried attacking the next protection of the people. They will see you be taken down by The Sentryâ as Valentina mentioned Bobâs evil alter ego, he flew out and landed beside her. While Valentina continued explaining her big plan to the group, Bucky angled his face back toward Y/n. âWhen things go south I need you to seek cover and stay hiddenâ Bucky whispered in a serious tone making Y/n nod, until she realized he wasnât able to see her face. âOkayâ Y/n confirmed with a shaken up voice, not fully grasping what she was agreeing to.Â
Things went south just a few minutes after when John Walker charged at The Sentry, which resulted in him being flung across the room. Bucky turned to Y/n, locking eyes with her to make sure she understood the intensity of the situation, and after that he ran to fight and she ran to hide. Y/n thought behind the bar had been a good place to hide, until all the glass shattered and cascaded over her face, which she covered with her arms. Y/n stumbled out from behind the bar, just in time to miss an elbow in the face by the Red Guardian. She yelped and backed away, narrowly missing another person being flung her way. Y/n could see Bucky fighting with The Sentry, trying to stab him with a knife but being unsuccessful. She ended up backed up against a wall and hoping that she was safe for now, and out of the first line of battle. Time would have it that no wishes are fulfilled, and in the commotion of the battle, The Sentry had lodged free a table and flung it against Bucky and John. They had both managed to get out of its way before it hit them, but Y/n wasnât as quick. She only just gets her arms up, protecting her face, before the table hits her full force, making her slam against the wall. The table almost bounces back from the wall and falls to the floor, Y/n follows suit as the air is knocked from her lungs and knees give out.Â
Bucky sees it happen and charges as The Sentry once more, this time with his metal arm. The Sentry catches it with ease, and in an instant the arm is detached from his body, and Bucky is swung across the room, landing closely to Y/n. Recognizing defeat, Yelena and Ava start retreating back to the elevator. Theyâre followed by Alexi who hollers angrily in russian. John returns Buckyâs arm to him, and in an instant Bucky is over by Y/n. âY/n, look at meâ Bucky shakes her slightly, gaining her attention and also a groan of pain. âWe have to get out of hereâ Bucky stands back up, expecting Y/n to be following, but in her haze and knees not working with her, she ends up just struggling on the ground. Bucky turns back to her and without more thought he scoops her up, barely with any struggle despite having his ass just handed to him. Y/n whines in pain but accepts her lift, and when she comes to it slightly more, she also appreciates it. âIâve got youâ mutters Bucky under his breath, just loud enough for her to hear.
Outside on the streets they reconcile after the defeat, Yelena yelling at the group, while Bucky props up Y/n, checking her injuries. âThank youâ Y/n grabs his hand, stopping him in his frantic movements. Bucky seems surprised at first, and now he seems too timid to talk. âThank you for saving meâ Y/n squeezes his hand, and chuckles to herself, âTwice, I suppose⌠I shouldâve just listened the first time you came to meâ. Buckyâs eyes soften, his gaze lingering at their hands. âIâm just happy you called, I was worried youâd just thrown away my numberâ he murmurs, not looking up at Y/n yet. âYou caught my attention, even if we were on opposite sides⌠It would be difficult to throw it awayâ Y/n says with a smile while looking into his icy blue eyes.

The streets of Madripoor had a lingering smell of smoke, secrets and lowlives trying to go unnoticed. There were small crowds surrounding stalls selling all kinds of unauthorized exotic goods. Zemo was moving through the crowd acting like a king coming home, or in this case a baron followed by a Smiling Tiger lookalike and two ex-assasins.Â
The crowds disrupted quietly at the sight of Bucky, or The Winter Soldier, as they muttered in disbelief. Although Sam as the Smiling Tiger and Y/n in a reconstruction of a black widow suit also caused a stir.
âStay in character no matter whatâ Zemo said as he looked over his shoulder at the bunch, âone slip up and weâre deadâ. With a small glance at Bucky Y/n tried to keep focus on the task, diving head first into the past she tried to cover up and work through. Although Bucky's glance was cold as the winter soldier, he held a softness Y/n recognized as hers when they locked eyes.
They entered the bar, Sam got his snake shot and Zemo tried to get a meeting with Selby. People were gawking at the assassin duo. The shine from Bucky's metal arm reflected slightly in the colorful lights of the bar. Meanwhile Y/n was aware of the many stares in her direction, she felt the suit tightly against every inch of her skin, and if she wasnât focused on her role she wouldâve shifted and turned away from the stares. It wasnât new, and while in the black widow program it was how a job was done. Seducing the targets of her missions was what she was brought into, but the time spent away from the red rooms, with the avengers and most importantly with Bucky, sheâd learned her strength in many other ways.
âI have an offer for Selby she might be interested inâ Y/n heard Zemo tell the bartender as he glanced towards her and Bucky. Now it was Buckyâs turn to shift ever so slightly, and Sam narrowed his eyes at Zemo. âYouâre not welcome in Madripoor anymore⌠Iâm sure youâre awareâ the bartender said, as the energy shifted in the bar. People reached for their weapons, ready to trigger any moment. âŃОНдаŃâŚĐ˛Đ´ĐžĐ˛Đ°â (âsoldierâŚwidowâ) Zemo looked expectantly, and with a hint of excitement at Bucky and Y/n, until he gave a quick nod and they knew they had to comply.
A man charged at Bucky as another lunged at Y/n, both were quick to be put down, as Y/n moved onto another attacker. He came at her with a dagger which she kicked out of his hands, as she ducked his next attack. Y/n swung herself onto his back and put him in a headlock, the attacker was down just seconds later. Another one swung at her, only to be swept off his feet, landing on his back with a boot pressed against his neck.Â
Two shots rang out in the bar, stopping everyone, Y/n and Bucky being ordered to back down by Zemo. People were quick to desert the bar, and soon the group was being escorted to the back by two of Selby's bodyguards. âExcellent job soldiers, you make good work of yourselvesâ Zemo smirked at them, clearly enjoying his current position of power.Â
âSmiling Tiger! I didnât expect to see you here in my bar todayâ Selby called out, which made Sam huff slightly, before he could respond Zemo had cut him off. âThe Smiling Tiger and I share a common interest⌠One I've heard you have some information onâ He moved closer to Selby and sat by her on the leather couch. Selby leaned back as she scanned Sam closely, her eyes glimmering sinisterly. âI have a lot of information, you have to be more specificâ Selbyâs eyes moved on to Bucky and Y/n by the wall, âbut my information isnât cheap, do you have plans of negotiating, Zemo?â.
Zemo moved from the couch to stand besides Bucky, his hand hovering over the metal arm. âAh yes, I come prepared, of courseâ Zemo ran his hand alongside Bucky's arm, âThe Winter Soldier here is an excellent soldier, you can have him. Alongside the words to activate himâ. Selby grinned widely but shook her head. âOh Zemo, I know youâre after the super serum, and I could definitely put him to good use, you need to name a better priceâ.Â
Bucky shifted slightly making Zemo let go of his arm and move over to Y/n who stood cemented in place with a cold glare directed straight forward. âI know black widows are high in value, and Y/n here is one of the best trained and last of her kindâ Zemo moved a piece of hair behind her ear, âshe is said to have a multitude of talents, trained in seducition, Iâm sure youâre aware of the storiesâ. Selby stood up and moved in front of Y/n, her eyes looking over every part of her, making her feel naked under the glaring. In the corner of Y/nâs eyes she saw Sam hover a hand close to the gun tucked in his waistband, and Bucky had broken his winter soldier stare, now more focused on what played out besides him.Â
âYes, yes, I know all of her talents, some of my men have had their turns with her kind, Iâm sure theyâd like to be reunitedâ Selby grabs Y/nâs face, turning it in different directions, her finger coming to Y/nâs lips as she parts them. âWith a Winter Soldier we wonât need more protection, but I will take the black widow as wellâ Selby says as she lets go of Y/nâs face and turns to Zemo with a nod. First when Selby moved away from her could Y/n take in a breath, faltering slightly in her assassin role as she sought out Bucky. His eyes clearly displayed anger, hurt and comfort. His hand just slightly tilted toward Y/n, making her want to cling onto him until they had fought their way out of this hell hole of a city.
âThat seems like a fair agreem-â Zemo was cut off by Samâs phone ringing, in an instant the energy had shifted and Selby was demanding Sam to answer it. In the slight chaos of Sarah beginning to lecture Sam in finances, Y/n had inched closer to Bucky. She could now feel his heat, or anger, seep off of him and it helped her calm her senses and bring focus back, as they approached another fight.Â
In an instant chaos had broken out, Selby had been shot and her people attacked. While the four were fighting off people, Bucky was quick to get to Y/n and push her slightly away from the danger. Y/n was about to protest and defend her abilities, but the look of protective pleading from Bucky was enough for Y/n to turn around and look for an escape route.
They fought their way far out of Madripoor and ended up reuniting with Sharon where they now were hiding out. Bucky hadnât let go of his grip on Y/nâs arm since they arrived. âHey, Buck, are you okay?â Y/n quietly asked as they stood a bit away from the rest. His eyes instantly met hers and she could see the guilt clear as day. âI-..Iâm sorry Y/n, I shouldâve shot her myself as soon as she touched youâ he whispered, âhey, no no, Bucky itâs not your fault, we had to follow the planâ. Y/n could see that her words didnât reach him, âBucky, we couldnât have done anything differently, or else we wouldâve risked getting the info on the serumâ.Â
Bucky shook his head, âThe serum, it doesnât matter⌠The second they started talking about you like that⌠I shouldâve- I shouldâve done somethingâŚâ. Y/n grabbed his hand, drawing small circles on it with her thumb, as a soft smile played on her lips, âI love you Bucky, but thereâs nothing we couldâve done back there that wouldnât have made the situation worseâ Buckyâs eyes soften at her words, and his shoulders fall slightly. He hums slightly and squeezes her hand softly. Bucky locks eyes with Y/n as he sees a glint of mischievousness enter her gaze, âand for the record, if anyone was gonna shoot her, I call dibsâ.
