alan shore of boston legal (played by james spader) has this amazing arc in s2 of the show where he is losing it over living in 2000s america, the worldwide horrors of the empire & the failures of the american legal system & his own moral desolation as a successful lawyer, and it is neverrr so explicit. he never talks about it, no one points it out. the show just shows him in these situations you know are painful without the show telling you theyre bad, and spader plays it AMAZING so you can SEE it killing him. most striking implicit existentialist horror is when alan starts sleep walking and ending up on his window ledge about to jump. this subconscious suicidality... and he's only saved by his homoerotic best friend chaining them together and sleeping next to him :(
