DID YOU KNOW: a 15-ton piece of the Titanic’s hull was raised from the ocean floor in the 1990′s? The so-called “Big Piece” is a segment of Titanic’s hull from C-Deck that is believed to have broken off of the ship during the break-up as the ship sank. Three Titanic survivors - Dr. Michel Navratil, Eleanor Schuman, and Edith Brown - had been aboard an effort to raise the piece in 1996 that was foiled when the cables snapped 200 feet from the surface, sending the 15-ton hunk of steel rocketing down over 12,000 feet to the ocean floor once again. Successfully raised in 1998, the “Big Piece” has undergone copious restoration to halt the decomposition of the steel. Of the four whole portholes (and two partial portholes) contained in the piece, three still have glass in them. The “Big Piece” is currently the centerpiece of RMS Titanic, Inc.’s Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.
