the thing about prussia is he's a violent freak who sucks and picks fights for fun and is operating on such insane levels of haterism that he literally stalks austria and goes out of his way to ruin his day, and he's a misogynist with three layers of religious fuckery that both represses him and also gets used as an excuse for his gleeful acts of violence, and despite Probably doing his best to raise him, he's so emotionally stunted, more Machine Than Person, so hellbent on having the legacy of a singular strong german state that he did irreparable damage to germany and now the kid can't talk to people normally and has weird psychosexual hangups. he probably spends half of the twentieth century on hella coke, around people who have completely justified long-standing grudges against him and want to break his nose every time he talks. literally the kindest thing thats ever happened wrt prussia is getting dissolved so he can't be a problem anymore
but above all else. most importantly. prussia is my little princess
LRP: I think what speaks to me the most about Germany/Austria is that baseline respect. As someone who sits at the intersection of a bunch of marginalised identities, you learn pretty quickly that there are different levels of "acceptance":
> some people respect you to your face, but make fun of you to others behind your back or disclose they think you're full of it
> some people make underhanded remarks/comments/call you names that they wouldn't if they actually respected your identity
> some people just don't respect you at all, yet claim to be allies
And with Germany and Austria, no, obviously Austria isn't a monarchy anymore, he's not even really a noble, he's thriftier than you'd expect and he's not wealthy, but his image is important to him. How you perceive him is important to him, and it's important to him that you respect it.
The ideal lifestyle of aristocrats was simply to loaf around and indulge in their leisure activities all day while peasants toiled the fields and paid the taxes that supported them, and Germany lets him do it.
Observe how he doesn't even comment on the falsity of Austria's image; instead, he validates Austria's identity as an aristocrat in the same breath as scolding him:
"That's some attitude despite being a good-for-nothing freeloader!"
"What nerve, and I let you eat in this house! Acting like this when I'm your superior!"
He may protest, but it doesn't change the fact that he's letting Austria get away with what he wants, giving way to his demands again and again even though he's in the stronger position by dint of Austria's annexation. He's sometimes like... okay... but he does actually think Austria has some right, on some level, to behave the way that he does. Not all the time, but often enough.
...What this says about Germany and his disposition/tolerance levels for this behaviour is, umm... another subject, though.

Just spent 3 hours looking for this to make a point. Okay so
I think Austria and Germany have this super interesting dynamic; Roderich as a character is very tied to his familial units, he's in several marriages across his life, has had multiple children under his care (though he's never a good caretaker by any means) and it does seem like closeness between family members is something he yearns for. Later on, German Unification, we see Roderich eager to lead the charge and, as is quite literally stated up there, try to gain custody of Ludwig; for political reasons, of course, but I can't help but notice the familial term used, like he really did care about more than just controlling the newly emerging country.
And he fails, of course, but at the end of the day, we see Ludwig seek out Roderich's advice and opinion and council way more often than he does Gilbert's; he seems to respect him more, at a base level. Maybe the distance between them helped, maybe it's easier to respect an ally you view as an equal than an appendage that acts like he's in charge.
Roderich, in turn, is watching this child that is not his but could have been his grow up under the care of someone he considers a rival at best and probably as unfit to raise a nation, always with the thought in the back of his head that this could have been his if he just did something different; always with the loss of Holy Rome in his mind as well, whose death, although ultimately France's fault, was surely helped along by Austria.
And then you have the bit about the wheelchair, and I have to wonder when that was. Presumably after one of the World Wars, if it's meant to represent something about Austria the nation's state, rather than being caused by a random flare-up of disability (which is also possible!). Now, we've seen Roderich after WW1, in the Great Depression comic, and he wasn't in a wheelchair then. The statement up there came after that comic came out, so of course this wasn't actively intentioned, but that leaves two options; either Roderich stopped using the wheelchair before that comic, or he only needed it after WW2.
And that second possibility is super interesting to me. It builds off of what we're shown in the very early comics, where Roderich lives with Ludwig and is generally shown to have a rather cushy experience during the war; the comic never truly turns dark despite the subject matter, of course, but we don't see Roderich in uniform or participating in drills, for example. His relationship with Ludwig seems to flip-flop between shitty roommates and (rather oedipedal) married couple; he hardly seems to mind it, though naturally Roderich is very prideful and likely wouldn't openly wallow in his distress either way. There's always a possibility that he's been actively kept trapped, rather than just having the privilege of staying out of combat.
Now, Roderich doesn't have many people he *could* rely on and trust enough to help him move around while disabled. Erzsébet, he's been separated from, and even if Gilbert were here, he's been shown to revel in making him feel weak, so he wouldn't be an option, anyways. Switzerland, maybe? But I can't imagine their already constantly strained relationship got any less volatile after the war. Feliciano seems to be positively inclined towards him despite the childhood horrors, but is generally unreliable. Anyone else is too far away.
So, he chooses Ludwig. Maybe out of desperation, maybe he genuinely trusts him enough to have him be his first choice, maybe because Ludwig is the only person who actually *will* do it. The wording is that he *makes* Ludwig push him around, either way. I think it's an interesting dimension to their already pretty fascinating dynamic; if he does trust Ludwig not to hurt him, what does that say about him.
Really lovely post that captures so much of what I like about the Austria/Germany relationship. To offer a bit of speculation, I think part of it must be how much Germany explicitly admires Austria in a way that very few people still do. It's almost as if, being born so long after the other nation-tans, Germany hasn't had the chance to be disillusioned with Austria and still believes that he has superior taste/finesse in certain things. I think the following strips best illustrate this:
This relationship is reciprocal, as seen by Austria being comfortable enough to ask Germany for help (well, okay, "demand" more so than "ask"):
With Germany, Austria can still be the kizoku bocchan persona he tries to affect with someone who at least somewhat seems to buy it, even if he also finds it sort of ridiculous. And... Austria's lifestyle and mannerisms are ridiculous, but they are also intentional choices he makes in presenting himself, which perhaps Prussia, France, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, and co. don't buy because... well, they've known him for so long at this point.
Given all that, I don't think it's at all surprising Austria would be more comfortable showcasing his vulnerability with Germany, as he knows he'll always have a certain level of respect. It tracks for the rest of their relationship.

I realized uploading this without context might look bad.
This is about nearing the end of Italy as part of the axis. Prussia gave his dagger to Italy, but Italy reads it—my honor is loyalty—and he realized everything that they've done in the war, there's no honor in that. There is also no loyalty as after this Italy would switch sides, joining the allies and declaring war on Germany per 1943. This is why Italy's expression is a mix of disgust and confliction, while Prussia just doesn't care.

Also I am begging you to explore the idea that Gilbert and Roderich are actually alike.
They're both self-focused and ambitious and driven. They're both scared of falling out of power and what happens when they fail. They've made enemies to be on top.
Their methods are different but their driving motivations are not. It takes two to fuel a competitive obsession with each other.
A child who looks like Holy Rome appears and brings back memories.
Cw: it's a tad bit painful
Another work by Kobu!
This one hurt me...
The rest of the preview features the past with Austria and Hungary, and even further back in the past with Austria and Switzerland; but I can only post 10 pgs on mobile and I mostly just wanted to tl this part anyway.
