DROWNING IN A SEA OF GRAINS OF SAND
Andarions, humans and sentient creatures alike, each and every one will tell you about love. Love. As if one word could hold the power to cure this putrid Universe, reeking of corruption, violence and endless death. It was laughable, really. In its most genuine essence, love is simple. Uncomplicated. Jullien eton Anatale would even dare to claim it as beautiful. The construction of this concept was based, however, solely in his observations. Never in real experience. His surroundings, though spoiled by the absence of proper morals —such as decency—, still managed to catch a likeliness of it. Marvelled by this flawed depiction of love, Jullien scribbled down his own ruination in fate’s most tattered notebook. The first paragraph held analogies between his true heart’s desires and poetic beauty, translated in muses made of raw art. Parallels to this artistry persuaded him into welcoming a foreign sentiment. Hope. Was he worthy of love? In truth, he doubted it. But the seed of hope had been planted already. In the final paragraph, following every failed attempt to be bestowed the rare gift of untainted love, angry letters spewed the venom of his gut-wrenching fears. The onslaught on his already frail hope brought about its ultimate demise, no mercy in sight. Broken pieces of him laid across the floor as if he had been ripped open by an angry lorina, defending its offspring from him. Multiple daggers had been so ruthlessly plunged into his heart over the years. For that, it bled profusely until the four cavities of this useless organ were emptied of all emotion. He soon became fate’s favourite punchline. And when his exile came, the lingering traces of hope received their final blow. The brutal execution brought him to his knees in a moment of disheartening desperation and his cry fell into the void, promptly absorbed by the deafening silence of space —home of fathomless galaxies and their respective stars. Without pause, assassins and bounty hunters pursued him at the former tadara’s request. Neither reserved an ounce of compassionate humanity for him, his head was worth a ridiculous amount of credits. Eriadne eton Anatole, the ruler of Andarion (his homeworld) and his (dear) grandmother, refused to leave his untimely death to fate or luck. Hence the hefty price on his head and the Thrill-Kill contract on his warrant. This meant every assassin was given carte blanche to kill, violate, desecrate and tear him into pieces. There was even a bonus to be offered if his heart and the Andarion signet ring were delivered. According to the royal bitch of legendary tantrums, Jullien eton Anatole was guilty of theft, murder and attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, terrorism and high treason against his empire and race. With all that shit-show happening, his chances of finding a soul to complete his and connect with were reduced to zero. Or something very close it anyway. The day for him began before the rise of the pair of suns of the backwater planet he escaped to after the latest rendezvous with the barrel of several blasters. It became imperative to be on the move without prolonged interruptions to avoid recognition from those with access to any means of technology. So far he had been doing a piss-poor job at it. Eluding detection proved to be a near-impossible feat beneath the watchful eyes of hungry vultures, ready to pounce and claim the fortune his death represented. He was treading through the sandy desert under the blistering suns, a meagre scarf covering his head and face save for his damned human eyes when his demons revivified with renewed cruelty, ready to be spoon-fed to him. The searing heat from the binary suns quickly depleted him of his water reserves, effectively inducing a state of delirium. “Nobody cares about your sorry ass.” “You’re a disgusting hybrid.” “Not even your own mother could love you.” “You’re defective. A poor excuse of an Andarion.” “You never had a true friend. Only leeches surrounded you.” “Even your brides chose death rather spend their lives with you.” Their songs, stuck in endless loops, guided the ship of his soul to the staring abyss like sirens’ melodies with the might to wreck a sailor’s ship. Driven by the momentary loss of gravity, his knees met the immeasurable sea of grains of sand in a soft thud. And frozen in panic and desperation, he drowned. His weakness grew beneath the weight of each cry, and logic abandoned the building in the midst of chaotic torture. There was no place for it, not while the panic attack spread the infection of insanity. Then the delusion followed. Panting progressively harder with each heartbeat, a distorted vision of Jullien’s twin brother invaded his thoughts. Nykyrian’s body laid on the ground, immobile. Silently, great amounts of blood oozed from what looked like a blaster wound. “Nyk!” He rushed to his brother’s side. “Please, Nyk. Nyk! Wake up. Kill me if you must, just don’t die on me. Not like this.” Despite the missing coordination of hands, Jullien held onto his brother, willing him to live as he shook him with violence. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for what I’ve done to you. I was hurting, I-I lashed out on you. They, they... it doesn’t matter now. Nyk!” His anguished pleas went unheard by the gods he both worshipped and despised. Breathlessly, the angry sobs raked through him. His hands, now stained with Nyk’s blood, trembled furiously as he so hopelessly tried to seal the gaping wound with them. Boundless sorrow took over him as he grieved his brother yet he suspected denial would knock next. Still blinded by the tears that offered him no reprieve, disbelief moulded his expression once he lifted his gaze and glanced at their immediate vicinity. Dread, shock and misery unfurled in wicked vengeance as he saw the familiar blaster pointed at Nykyrian’s general direction. As if frozen in time, the old Jullien dared not to move while the murder weapon remained sat between his fingers with unerring aim. Anger bit him next. Jullien had been lost before, lost and angry, but he had never harboured such malice for his brother. How could he? They had both been fucked over by their grandmother. Refusing to believe that, he glanced between his old self, still overweight from the constant drownings in food where he often found solace from the never-ending abuse, and his brother who lied lifeless in his arms. “Titana ræl. What have you done? Nyk doesn’t deserve this! You’re a minsid fuck.” Salty tears revealed themselves as they flowed freely for the first time in weeks. “He’s our brother.” “No. He isn’t. You just shared a womb with him, chiran. It doesn’t make him your brother. Besides, he left us. Left us to deal with the atrocities of Eriadne’s rule. Haven’t we suffered more than him?” The once tiziran and heir to two of the greatest empires of all the Nine Worlds shot back at him, with spite haunting his gaze. “Just look at yourself, asshole. Your mother never cared whether you live or die because all she does is mourn him. Her favoured son. Your father believed you to be Eriadne’s little puppet, he never gave you a chance. You’ve been exiled, estranged from your own land, and disinherited over crimes you never committed. You’re hungry, gravely wounded by the regular encounters with bounty hunters and assassins. And you’re telling me you don’t resent that shit over there?” Regally dressed, his old self pointed accusatorially at their twin. “How is he to blame for the actions of others? Our parents are the ones who wronged us. Never cared for our well-being. Our mother even marked us as Outcast. It wasn’t Nyk who issued your death warrant, even though we deserve it after our stunt against Kiara.” Present, exiled Jullien barked back with solid arguments, his grief painfully written across his features. “You’re pathetic. He’d kill you without hesitation and here you are defending him. Nyk would never listen to your story, he’d refuse to. Why would he? Your whole life has been exposed and manipulated by the media, the facts were never truly broadcasted. Were they? No. You did what you did to survive the interminable abuse. All your miserable life, you just wanted to belong. You have lurked in darkness, peeking from the shadows as Nyk rebuild himself, sealed his wounds and cauterised his scars among the elite members of the Sentella. Did you get this chance? Did you? You’re a minsid loser who only gets to watch in silence, bear witness to your brother’s growing happiness while your soul withers from the neglect brought by lack of a single modicum of affection. The unbreakable bond he has forged with his comrades through the many feuds with the League, that sense of family and companionship is all you’ve ever desired. Is it not? How many times has your soul cried out for kindness? Did you find it? No. Instead, you watched every door shut in your face while they all screamed ‘you’re not welcomed here, hybrid reject’.” The accusations and truth dissertations, laced in venom, mutilated his weakened heart beneath the cruelty of his own unspoken thoughts. Jules grew restless, even drowning in feverish delirium. His unkempt claws dug into flesh forcefully until little droplets of blood rolled from the self-inflicted wounds, a haunting cry for help as he desperately sought to ground himself and separate hallucination from reality. “Go away. Leave me alone, let me burn in Tophet alone.” His knees buried in scorching sand, Jullien held onto his head lost to irrational panic as his mind went under siege by screaming wraiths. “When did you become such a disgrace? Eriadne would have a field day if she were to see you right now. She didn’t groom you to be so pitiful.” The vicious tirade didn’t falter from the finely dressed Jullien, the heir of Andaria’s grand empire. “Accept it already that you’ll never be loved, and Nyk will never welcome you into his circle of trust. You’ve lost it before you could even ask for it.” “SHUT UP!” Breathlessly, he lifted his chin to glance at his old self just as equally broken as he was. The only difference being the fine clothing, expensive luxuries and the uninterrupted drugged stupor he was victim of. “Please. All she ever did was break us to ensure we wouldn’t dare escape the spot beneath her heel.” “Congratulations, you minsid cocúpün caxam. You tricked her iron fist and became an intergalactic runaway. That made your life that much easier.” The vicious barbs kept coming inducing the beast that dwelled within. The Dagger Ixur, forged by the shattered pieces of the goddess Samari’s heart, finally rose from its slumber with a blunt dagger between his fingers. The green eyes ringed by a circle of red fixed on Jullien’s next target as the stoic expression etched to his face revealed a calmness he did not and could not feel for as long as he waged wars against himself. And like a burning Phoenix rising from ashes in the aftermath of its demise, he too rose. His knees, weakened by the onslaught of emotional torment, remained surprisingly steady throughout each hardship as the predator finally pounced on his prey after a mad dash toward his old self. One loud gasp disrupted the ongoing tongue-lashing. Despite the blade lacking its expected sharpness, it delivered the intended punishment. And in less than just a few heartbeats, blood coated the prince’s shirt. Between shock and betrayal, the face of Jullien’s old self shifted its expression as his gaze lingered on the blade that stuck out of his abdomen. His lips parted, old Jullien lifted his chin to throw an accusatory glower at his other self. “I’ll see you in Tophet.”
