The Scrubs revival gave John C. McGinley a recurring guest credit on a show where he spent nine seasons being the most important person in every room.

That's not a slight. That's a nine-episode season with a new intern class to establish, a Sacred Heart to reintroduce, and a J.D. who just became chief of medicine. There wasn't structural space for Dr. Cox to actually be Dr. Cox.

Bill Lawrence already said Kelso didn't fit this season at all. McGinley has talked openly about how the Dr. Cox storyline this season was a deliberate handoff, not a farewell. Judy Reyes is in the same situation.

What's airing right now is the foundation. The original cast isn't absent because the show failed to get them. They're limited because the show is saving them for when it has room to use them correctly.

Most revivals don't think that far ahead. They lead with every legacy character in episode one and run out of story by episode five. Scrubs is doing the slower, harder thing.

Season 2 is the show at full strength. Season 1 is just earning it.
