Step 1: Start by using a tinted BB cream instead of a normal, heavy duty foundation. BB creams are lighter and contain SPF which is beneficial to your skin. Try MAC’s Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm ($31). A little goes a long way and it will keep your skin moisturized for the entire day! Simply squeeze a little bit onto your finger and gently rub onto your face.

Step 2: If you want a little extra coverage while still maintaining the natural look, use a light concealer to cover dark under eye circles and blemishes. Try NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30). Again, swipe a little bit onto the places that need to be concealed and blend in. This concealer also brightens, making you look more awake and radiant. 

Step 3: In order to look like a glowing goddess, bronzer and highlighter are a must. Try Colourpop’s Poolside Bronzer ($8) and Colourpop’s Might Be Highlighter ($8). Super affordable and super pigmented! Apply the bronzer using light strokes to your forehead, cheek bones, and jawline, almost drawing a “3″ shape. Apply the highlighter to the bridge and tip of your nose, cupid’s bow, brow bone, and cheekbones. Also add a a little bit to the inner corner of your eyes to make them look more awake. 

Step 4: This step isn’t necessary, but if you would like you can apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend it into your cheekbones. I recommend Colourpop’s Cheerio Blush ($8). 

1. Headphones

I cannot stress enough how important it is to bring a pair of headphones. There are gonna be nights when you want to drown out the sound of your roommate and her friends, or the loud talkers at the library. Having headphones comes in clutch when you can just pop them on and be transported into your own, self absorbed world. 

I just bought a pair of FRENDS headphones in Layla Rose Gold, and I am in love with them! They are so chic and the sound quality is amazing. 10/10 recommend. I also have a pair of regular apple earphones if I’m on the go and don’t want something too big or over-the-ear. 

2. Bathrobe

There are gonna be times when you come out of the shower and don’t feel like putting on clothes. This is where having a bathrobe comes in handy! Rather than walking around your apartment (or dorm room) in your birthday suit, put on a comfy robe and go about your business. 

This is also great if you’re living in a dorm with communal bathrooms (like I did my freshman year). It reduces the risk of your towel getting caught or slipping off as you walk past the hottie on your floor! No, but seriously.

3. Portable Charger

Imagine: You’re on the bus riding back to your dorm (or apartment). Suddenly, the bus breaks down and there’s no other way to get back unless you call a cab, or a friend for a ride. You frantically check your phone only to realize you have 1% phone battery. You try to think of who to call as fast as you can. But as soon as you reach for the call button, the spiral of death appears. And your phone goes dark. 

Don’t let this dreadful situation happen to you! There are going to be moments where you forget your phone charger or there are no outlets available to charge your phone. Invest in a portable charger. Trust me, even your friends will love you for it when you’re at all-day music festivals. 

4. Lounge Clothes (sweatpants + slip on shoes)

In most cases, the earliest you’ll wake up on the weekends is 12PM. And the only thing you will want to do is get to the dining hall because you are starving. Obviously, there’s no time to shower, do your makeup, and put together an outfit. Instead, put on some comfy sweatpants and shoes you can easily slip on and off (you know, for when you crawl back into bed). Don’t worry if you look like a mess, chances are 80% of people you see will look like that too!

5. A reminder of home

PSA: YOU ARE GOING TO BE HOMESICK!! Even if it’s just for a few minutes, there are going to be moments where you miss your room, your family, and your friends from back home. With this in mind, bring something that reminds you of home. That way, you’ll always have a piece of home with you! For me, my islands flag and some polaroid pictures of me and my friends form home did the trick. I also printed and framed some photos of my family and I and put them on my dresser.

6. Polaroid Camera

Or any camera for that matter! I chose a polaroid camera because 1.) They are adorable, and 2.) Having a physical copy of a picture is the greatest feeling ever. These cameras will come in clutch when you’re ready to capture a moment that will last forever. Never have to worry about your phone photos not being backed up, with these bad boys it’s all about aesthetic and practicability. They also make for hipster worthy instagram pictures! So, yeah. If that’s not a reason to buy one I don’t know what is.

7. Mattress Pad

SERIOUSLY. College mattresses are probably the grossest, bacteria filled things on campus. They are also, 9 times out of 10, very uncomfortable. Who would of thought there’s no Tempur Pedic mattresses in college?! Anyway, getting a mattress pad will help you sleep better at night (you know, without worrying about what could actually be lying on your mattress). I don’t even want to think about it tbh. 

8. Throw Blanket

A cozy, comfy blanket the recipe for a perfect night. It’s going to get cold. If your freshman year dorm is anything like mine, they don’t crank the heat up until it reaches below freezing temperatures outside. So, yeah, it’ll get cold. Having a blanket you can carry with you (or on you, as a cape) is an absolute must have. I used to take mine with me to our floor lounge as I cozied up on the couch to watch a movie. Pair this blanket with your loungewear and I’m certain you’ll never want to go out on the weekends.

9. Water bottle

Sure, there are water fountains on campus. But leaving class because your mouth is dry and you need a sip of water? Best to be avoided. Water bottles are great because you don’t have to spend extra money on buying the individual plastic ones (you know the ones I’m talking about) every time you go to the grocery store. Saving you money, and the environment! Also, don’t forget to bring your water bottle with you to the dining hall. Just refill with water every time you go and BAM! Hydrated forever.

10. Planner

There’s going to be times when you feel overwhelmed with everything you have to do. In order to stay organized and on top of things, get (or make) a planner! Put in everything you have to do and schedule them so you know exactly when you have to do them. My planner was my lifesaver. Every time something new came up, it went straight into it. Every assignment I ever had to do was also in there with important due dates. Try color-coding and adding your own personal touch to make it more pleasing to open and read.

1. I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

I’ve heard about this book from almost everyone. It’s the autobiography of Malala Yousafzai, a girl that flees the Taliban, gets shot in the head, and miraculously survives. All for the fight of an education. It seems like a truly inspiring book, and I have a feeling after one is finished reading it, they will have a brand new perspective on life.

2. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

A classic book written by a well-known female author that I’ve never gotten a chance to read. The Bell Jar is a supposed “haunting American classic” that details a woman’s journey to insanity.

3. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Ok, so, I didn’t really know where to begin to start describing this book having never read it. Even after reading the summary, I couldn’t begin to summarize this plot line. Thus, here is the summary from none other than Amazon.

“Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.”

4. Looking for Alaska by John Green

I’m kinda cheating by adding this one on here because I’ve already read it, but Looking for Alaska is a great book about what it means to be a young adult in a world full of temptation. This novel perfectly describes the emotions every teen goes through as they age.

5. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

A neurosurgeon finds out he has terminal cancer and questions what makes life worth living. It sounds like a deep and personal piece of written work. It’s been raved about by many book reviewers and doctors themselves.

6. Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

A major motion picture starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, Me Before You talks about the romance between two people from completely different worlds. Together, they take on new challenges and prove that love can exist with differences.

7. The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins

This book is on almost everyone’s must-read list. For good reason, I hope. I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages, and summer is the perfect reason to start doing so. 

8. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Ok, I’m not going to lie, when I saw this book in a store in Canada, I was totally attracted to it because of it’s cover. Look at the pretty cursive and clean white cover. It was so aesthetic I had to pick it up and read the summary. It’s pretty much about love letters the main character writes about all the boys she’s ever loved. This seems like a cute, romantic book that will have anyone sighing “awwww.”

9. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green

Another John Green book because why tf not?! John Green is hailed as one of the best YA authors pretty much EVER. If you’ve read The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, then you know what to expect when it comes to John Green novels (i.e. heartbreak and tears). It’ll be interesting to find out if this book is any different.

10. Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner

1. READ!

This is probably the most obvious, but it really does make time go by so much faster! Find a book you love, snuggle in a corner, grad a cup of hot cocoa (or tea...or coffee... whatever floats your boat) and get to reading.

2. Bake/Make a snack.

Making a yummy snack is a great way to spend your time. And the reward of eating it afterwards is even better. Bonus points if the snack you make turns out to be a four-course meal.

3. Jam out to music.

Take this opportunity to listen to some new music. Give Today’s Top hits a rest, and listen to something out of your comfort zone. It might just surprise you and lead you into a whole new world of music (which is always a good time). Take a look at my Spotify account if you would like!

4. Become a photographer.

If there’s one thing I absolutely love to do during summer, it’s take pictures! If you don’t have a camera or polaroid, use your phone camera! They take high quality pictures and with a little editing can end up looking super professional. An app I love is Timer Cam, which is pretty much like your own personal photographer.

5. Learn a new language.

Just because school is out, doesn’t mean your brain is. Take this extra free time to study up on something you’ve always wanted to learn. What’s great about this is you can learn at your own pace without the pressure of exams or homework.

6. Give yourself a makeover.

Before you starting taking photos, practice doing your makeup. There are numerous amounts of makeup tutorials on youtube. It can be a great way to spend time and even if it doesn’t turn out as expected, you can simply wash your face and start over! So, go on girl, practice that cat eye.

7. Binge-watch a show on Netflix.

Find a show, watch it, watch it, watch it... One can spend hours, if not days, binge-watching a TV show. Find one you like out of the numerous options on Netflix and begin! Some of my favorite include The Office, Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, and One Tree Hill.

8. Learn a new instrument.

Might as well start a band while you’re at it! This is the perfect opportunity to pick up that dusty old guitar you got as a christmas present that you forgot about. Try playing something simple, like twinkle twinkle little star, and then pick it up from there. Next thing you know you’ll be jamming out like Bruce Springsteen.

9. Watch YouTube videos.

I will literally spend hours on YouTube because of the suggested videos box. After you watch one, you’ll just want to keep on going. It’s an addiction, a sickness. Whatever you want to call it, YouTube is a great way to be entertained and perhaps even learn something. (You can also check out my Youtube account!)

10. Write in a journal. 

Journaling is a great way to release whatever you may be feeling. Or, even if you aren’t feeling anything, its a great place to doodle while binge-watching a TV Show. Who knows, maybe your journals will become a book one day.
