Sam, I don’t know what to say. You left so suddenly and my heart’s been hurting and I wish I could turn back time and just relive a little bit of my journey with your work.

I’ve always loved Jurassic Park - that was my first introduction to your acting career. And after reading the book, I will submit that no one could ever be Alan Grant the specific way you were. I never thought that I would be writing a fic about it later on, but our minds like to take some interesting turns, don’t they?

I remember when I first really began diving into your movies. I had watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople for the very first time two years ago and fell in love with your role, and decided to begin watching your films that were within my interest. From there, it became the Hunt for Red October, Perfect Strangers, The Portable Door, Sweet Country, and several others that blew me away. I was floored with how versatile of a character span you could play, how down to earth and real you made them.

There was always a little sadness when I’d go to look for a film and it would say that it wasn’t available in my region, but this year I watched Rams after it became available and it quickly became a favorite.

Last year, I made you a quilt, which I’m pretty confident you never got to see, but I loved your work so much that I wanted to create something of my own to express that appreciation. It has animals from your farm on it and it looks like the Jurassic Park logo, which took me forever to make but was so worth it.

Your work brought me a lot of joy in an era that I was really struggling, especially as I was learning some hard lessons about myself that needed to change. The videos you posted during the pandemic and singing with Jeff are some of my favorites and still make me smile. And don’t get me started on the audiobook of your autobiography - I love getting to listen to your voice tell your own stories. (My unashamed favorite is the one about Sean Connery on that platform for Hunt for Red October, it has me cackling every time)

Writing for your characters in montana skies and amber to ash brought a new spark to my writing, and inspired so many other fics, which I feel I owe in part to you, for playing characters that meant so much to me.

Thank you for being so down to earth. For putting your heart and soul into your films. For being one of the sweetest people alive in everything you do and not letting fame change who you are at your core. Thank you for making us laugh, for bringing a spot of light into the world with just being you. I’m going to miss you forever, Sam, I swear.
