It was the kind of cold and rainy night that sinks into your bones until you can’t stop shivering, even long after you’ve escaped it. The walk to the lot had felt like forever, and even as she was finally sitting there in the warmth of his car, her hands remained painfully frozen. She rubbed them together fiercely, trying to force some heat and life back into her fingers, but to no avail. Then, just as she was about to give up and wait for her hands to defrost in their own time, he almost absentmindedly slipped his palm beneath her interlocked fingers, loosely wrapping his own around both her hands, and rested them softly against her thigh.
“Here”.
With a small gesture and a smaller word, even as her fingers remained a little cold, he filled her chest with a warmth that seemed to spread all the way to her toes. Unaware, his gaze remained towards the window, watching the rain fall against the glass in heavy sheets, cocooning them away from the world.
“You’re watching the rain.” Her tone was both adoring and accusatory.
“Yeah, it’s nice. You know, when you’re inside and not getting wet.”
She let out a small laugh as he ran his free hand consciously over his damp coif.
“It’s just that you made fun–”
“I made fun of you last time when you were watching the rain, yeah. But you were right.”
His grasp on her hands tightened ever so slightly, as his eyes continued to take in the way the water reflected the street lights, casting a blue sheen in the darkness.
But even amid that simple beauty, and eventhough she did love to watch the rain, she found that night that her eyes could focus only on him, always on him.
