Canada doesn’t always get international attention, but when we do it often takes the form of good-humoured incredulity about the Canadian tendency to apologize all the time. And it certainly is a different way to be, but I don’t think it’s quaint or ridiculous. I can’t speak for all Canadians, but here’s why I do it: if I think I hurt, annoyed, or inconvenienced someone, and especially if they tell me I did, it’s important for me to let them know that I meant no harm and that I wish I could take it back. Or: maybe I had nothing to do it, but hearing the words “I’m sorry” would ease their pain. I like to say it, and I like to hear it. It sets the tone for making things right. It fosters good will between people. Other cultures have different norms for handling missteps and hurt feelings but in Canada an apology goes a long way.
