Sometimes I’m like “damn Marie is a horrible person, she ruined Henry’s life and basically forced him to become a killer that’s really sad and super messed up. She abused her position of trust as his mother to use him as a pawn in her game. That’s like the worst thing ever.”
And then I remembered she also removed a child’s face, possibly while he was still alive.
And then I’m like yeah no that might be a little worse
Do I accept and enjoy the vast majority of ships in this fandom? Yes.
However, I do have concrete evidence that suggests merit for my personal favorite ships.
Now we all know Forrest is from Chicago. And we know from conventional wisdom that “you can take the [person] out of [place], but you can’t take the [place] out of [person]”
And we therefore know that since Chicago is at least some integral part of Forrest, we know that properties of Chicago must therefore be some integral properties of Forrest.
And what structure is a central piece of the Chicago landscape, located in the heart of the city?
I rest my case.
Forrest: *walks into the bathroom to see Marie sitting on the floor with her back leaning on the cabinets*
Forrest: everything okay hon?
Marie: oh yeah. I’m great.
Forrest:… watcha doing on the floor?
Marie: nothing.
Forrest: …is it the-
Marie: -it’s the guilt, yeah.
Reblogging because I realized part of Forrest and Marie’s relationship is just this meme, which is actually sweet. She doesn’t have to keep her emotions all bottled up and pushed aside to focus on working long hours or using by that pent up energy for harm. She’s allowed to talk about her guilt and trauma freely with him and that must feel like a huge weight off her shoulders
The amount of emotional labor she has this man doing is crazy for someone who has never had a girlfriend before. And then the first girlfriend he has ever had is absolutely plagued by guilt, depression, worry, self-hatred and grief.
But he absolutely loves her, baggage and all. And he fully accepted the role of helping her talk about and process all the shit that’s bothering her. And it does make her feel better, knowing he knows about all her flaws and still wants to be with her.

Forrest: by the way, when is your birthday?
Marie: what?
Forrest: when is your birthday?
Marie: no, I heard what you said. Why does that matter?
Forrest: because I want to know.
Marie: why?
Forrest:…. Why do you think? So I can know when to get you a gift.
Marie: oh, no, you don’t have to do any of that.
Forrest: well, I want to. So when is it?
Marie: it doesn’t matter.
Forrest: ….how long has it been since you celebrated your birthday?
Marie: since before my son was born.
Forrest: okay but he’s eighteen.
Marie: yeah?
Forrest: so it’s been eighteen years since you’ve celebrated your birthday???
Marie: what’s the big deal?
Forrest: well, everyone likes to feel special every once in a while, don’t they? Plus, with what you have gone through, making it another full year on earth is a genuine achievement. You’ve beaten the odds.
Marie: If you’re asking me if I want a party, the answer is no.
Forrest: it doesn’t have to be a party.
Marie: I’m still not telling you.
Forrest: fine, I’ll just ask your sister. And then she’ll want to throw a party since I brought it up.
Marie: okay, Jesus, fine!
I think, at least in part, how much sympathy you have for Marie is determined by how much you understand the cultural context of her situation.
Because yes, anyone can understand losing a loved one is terrible. Anyone can understand being ostracized from your community is shitty.
But Marie is a single, pregnant, homeless teenage girl in 1968, in rural Iowa. All of those factors paint the picture that her suffering was not just Whistling Night and then being stonewalled by all the blackmailed citizens, it was DECADES of systemic struggle against a society that devalued her existence. If not outward poor treatment or direct prejudice, it was stigma, it was increased difficulty finding employment, the possibility of food scarcity, a lack of modern medical care, so many other things. That’s a part of her story, too. It doesn’t excuse or justify what she did but it’s very important context to understand why she was pushed to the brink.
I know I’ve been in a very George Lives au time in my life but I just can’t help thinking about my other love, Change of Plans.
I really really want to eventually write a oneshot focused on Forrest and Henry’s relationship. Like, how Henry went from absolutely hating this man to appreciating him as another member of his family. Not quite his stepfather, but family nonetheless.
It would definitely come from Henry being faced with indisputable evidence that being in a relationship is genuinely healing for his mom. Like his whole life he’s seen her just miserable and brokenhearted and bitter and then she starts actually looking happy, she starts genuinely smiling more, she even starts looking healthier- less dark circles, brighter skin, light back in her eyes.
And it becomes impossible to hate Forrest because he did in like eight months what Henry couldn’t do in eighteen years.
Well that and Forrest helped cover Henry’s college tuition, helping him access a future beyond what he was originally told his purpose was. That’s a very very generous and thoughtful thing to do for his fiancée’s kid.
Love the idea of Forrest getting recognized while taking Marie back to Chicago (for some reason like shop, go to fancy restaurants, other cool shit Gallows Creek doesn’t have) like
Forrest: hey, how’s it going? I’ll have a glass of the cab-sauv and the lady would like the pale ale on tap.
Fancy restaurant bartender: coming right- you sound so familiar. Would I know you from somewhere?
Forrest: uh… I don’t…
Bartender: no, I swear I know you from somewhere. Help me out here.
Forrest: *sighs* well, I used to do radio…
Bartender: oh my god- YOURE THE GUY THAT GOT CANNED AFTER THAT CRAZY INTERVIEW! I LISTENED TO YOU ALL THE TIME!! YOURE AWESOME!
Forrest: *dryly* hahah wow thanks…
*he leans over into Marie’s ear*
Forrest: for the rest of our time in this city you’re gonna do all the talking, got it?
Today’s shitpost- Marie absolutely tripping balls on anesthetic, completely unaware she had a baby.

Alter Ego animation meme!
Yes it’s been dead for years but leave me alone I finally had time ok!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Freaking finally
Sorry about the pacing i was just stringing random scenes together as I thought of them
Me when I’m in a shove as many canon dialogue phrases into the fic as I can but with the context radically changed competition and my opponent is @its-been-rose
So Paint It, Black by the Rolling Stones came out in April 1966. I don't think it would be teenage Marie's vibe, but after George's death? That shit's her #2 anthem.
Original tags are wrong do not ever stop thinking about her
And yeah you’re absolutely right
She is driven by two things- revenge and nostalgia
Reality is often stranger (and worse) than fiction
So I was doing research for my George Lives fic and asked the question “hey so what was it like to have babies in a rural hospital in the late 1960’s?”
I should not have asked that question.
And I fully understand anyone who wants to not read this chapter even because I barely implied what Marie would have to go through. It is beyond unpleasant, honestly probably considered medical abuse by today’s standards.
If medical stuff somehow DOESN’T freak you out, I am very excited to present this newest chapter to you in the following days.
Again I am not even going into detail I’m just stating plainly what happened with JUST enough info you understand the truth but not enough where it paints a vivid picture. I’m even leaving a lot of the worst details out.
But yeah anyway hey Marie I’m not saying I condone your murder spree but I do at least understand how you could have accumulated so much rage. Girl society hated you. Being a young woman in the late 1960’s in a rural town that wasn’t as modern as some bigger cities, especially one as corrupt as Gallows Creek, wasn’t for the faint of heart.

@eating-plastic you have successfully convinced me to abandon my WIP COPE oneshot to work on another chapter of my GLAU fic. I hope you’re happy.
Wait for me!
Since everyone and their mom was drawing Ryland Grace and Laika I decided to draw some KF characters with some other animal heroes
The sled dogs are just a few of the dogs who mushed in the 1925 Diphtheria Serum Run in Nome, Alaska. A small town in the middle of nowhere came down with a nasty outbreak of the disease and their doctor’s antitoxin was expired. Due to horrific winter conditions, the town’s only hope was to send a relay team of dogs and their mushers to retrieve fresh antitoxin across the state and then go back again to bring it to them.
The little pigeon is meant to be Cher Ami, a pigeon who served in WW1. He’s credited with delivering a distress message sent from the Lost Battalion, a group of soldiers who had gotten stuck behind enemy lines, to the rest of their army, taking a bullet and losing a leg but continuing to fly until he landed at his destination. Unfortunately, while Cher Ami did lose a leg and did deliver many messages across active battlefields, the evidence he delivered any message from the Lost Battalion to call their army to aid is scarce. But I still wanted to include him because I love pigeons and he still saved many people.
