“I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self-respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and that’s the beginning and end of everything.”

“Let’s not talk about getting married. Let’s stop reciting imaginary vows with each other when we’re under the covers. I want to stop thinking about happily ever afters or what ifs because what if it all gets swallowed by a rainstorm and thrown down an ocean. I know you love me and I know that I’m madly in love with you. But being in love can be temporary, and please don’t tell me that we’re different because that’s everyone’s story.”

“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit within the core belief.”
