Ultimately, the fact of the matter is that thereâs a profound difference between taking some liberties while adapting a story and completely changing the characters and themes of said story as a supposed adaptation. Jesus Christ Superstar works as an âadaptationâ of the gospels because a) it does not pretend to be a faithful adaptation, but rather a play on the original story; b) itâs different in many ways, but the core of the story remains the same: it deals with themes of faith, mystery and contemplation of a higher will, predestination and free will, the relationship between humanity and the divine; it differs in its elaboration of those themes from the original, and introduces some new elements, but itâs still ultimately a story about those themes, and the characters â although explored in different ways â are still the same characters at their core.
Just like you canât write a Jesus that is unforgiving, or a Judas that doesnât betray Jesus in the end, you canât write an Odysseus thatâs not cunning and deceitful and full of hubris. Those are the traits that make him Odysseus. You can give him PTSD from the Trojan war, sure; you can explore the complexities of his character and any guilt he might feel about his actions, and still have him feel like Odysseus; I think the novel Circe by Madeline Miller does it fairly well, for instance. But you canât write an Odysseus who is a good, honest, straightforward man trying to grapple with his war crimes, simply because that is not Odysseus. And in the same vein, if you want to write a take on the Odyssey but you want to forgo all exploration of the original themes and concepts in favour of your own ideas, it would be worth it to look for a different epic poem that might be a better base for your ambitions.
Look, Iâm not the adaptation police. Iâve read plenty of stories that completely subverted the core of the respective original works and Iâve loved them to bits; but there has to be a clear connection between the story and the subsequent take on the story, or it doesnât work. You canât just write your original work with specific themes and characters, slap some familiar names on it and call it an Odyssey, and people are allowed to say so.

and the post begins
because otherwise it gets kind of visually confusing to parse, which is annoying to some folks, including me
GRANTED not everybody uses the same theme or even the same update. you might have noticed my version of tumblr is earlier than yours (I don't like the new button setup)
but still, it's just about being polite
so now you know
If THE modern translator of the OG Odyssey text wrote this about my film adaptation Iâd kill myself

Back during pride month, the football team I support (Corinthians) decided to make an instagram post celebrating LGBTQ+ pride day. This was the post they made. Do you notice anything missing?
Thatâs right, the green stripe on the pride flag has been removed. Because Corinthiansâ biggest rival, Palmeiras, has green as its main color.
Corinthians said: you can be queer, but we draw the line at being a Palmeiras fan.
Fun fact: in the early 2010s, when Corinthians was building its new stadium, the president of the club wanted to dye the pitch grass black to make the stadium completely green-free. Unfortunately the Brazilian football federation wouldnât allow it
To compensate for this, Corinthians will sometimes edit the green out of the grass in its social media posts
When the womenâs team played a rivalry game against Palmeiras at the Palmeiras stadium (where absolutely EVERYTHING is green), the social media posts were in black and white (which are the Corinthians colors)
closing statement from an article about being intersex & the possible connection of gender expression and sexuality in intersex individuals, published in The Gay Liberator, 1970s
[ID: a picture of an article that says, âHopefully gay liberation will continue to raise confusing issues until the world at large becomes so confused and befuddled about sex and gender and all that people can finally stop worrying if "it's a boy or a girl" and get around to being free to be and to love people.â /end ID]
