arenna-maesonâ:
She didnât mind Isoldeâs touch, felt the muscles in her face relax some under her gentle fingers. âIt will,â she promised, knowing without a single uncertainty that Isoldeâs heart would fall in love again. She was too young, too beautiful, and too kind a young to not share herself with someone special. Someone who looked at her and recognized, appreciated exactly what they had. âI donât worry for you, sister. You are strong, and independent. You donât need my worry,â Arenna reasoned with a small smile, mirroring the position of Isoldeâs hand and gently laying her own against her sisterâs cheek. âBut that doesnât meant I donât think of you. Every day, even when Iâm busy.â Dark eyes shone brightly with the truth of her words, and with her growing affections for this woman who had found her at such an opportune time. âI always wanted a sister, you know.â This she whispered, almost as if it were a secret that Andaren might here if the slightest wind caught hold of it. âSomeone to do exactly this with.â Arennaâs smile turned almost shy. âI hope you know that Iâm grateful to have you now. Even if we donât have many opportunities to enjoy sisterly things.â
She didnât need her worry, no, but it was nice to have it. To know she mattered enough to the younger woman now that she would worry for her, for such trivial matters as her broken heart. If Rowan had fractured it, taken part with her, having Arenna was helping to stitch it slowly back together again. She smiled slightly at the sweetness of Arennaâs words and touch, the reassurance she offered, and the way she referred to her as sister without underlying suspicion or uncertainty hanging between them. âI think of you every day as well,â she promised. âIt is hard not to, when youâre all anyone talks about.â This she added with a teasing note to her voice, thumb tapping lightly against her sisterâs cheek. Her expression softened and warmed at Arennaâs whispered declaration and she sighed a little, part relief and part gratefulness, her eyes closing briefly to absorb how nice this moment was. When she opened them again, they were slightly damp and shining with affection. âI wanted family,â she whispered. âIt was just mum and I for all my life, and it... it wasnât easy. I donât know that I ever thought of siblings, though I always wanted a close friend. And then I read those letters and knowing that you and Andaren were blood, I wanted nothing else but to know you. That did not pan out as far as the brother went, but thatâs fine. It led me to better things. It guided me to you. My sister.â She laughed a little, the sound soft and amazed. âWeâll have so much time, when the war ends and the world settles. I will see you married and making a start to your own family, your own nation. I will be there at your side when the crown is rightfully settled on your head. Weâre young, Arenna. So young. For all the time weâve lost, weâve still many years to know each other. I am looking forward to them.â
