“Sounds fine to me,” Alex said. Because, really, what else could she have done? She wasn’t the first surgeon to pour herself into work at a time like this and she sure as hell wouldn’t be the last. 

“How are the kids?” He knew Alexis and Eli were okay because he’d talked to them, but he had always had a bit less to do with the other two considering he wasn’t their actual dad.

“I know everyone says this kind of stuff, but I am around if you need anything.”

“It’s better than some of the alternatives.” Izzie said shaking her head and finishing the rest of her cupcake, before taking a sip of her wine. 

When alex mentioned the kids, she took a deep breath and took a minute to think about how she should answer the question but she just shook her head. “They are how you would expect. sad and don’t really want to talk about it. I think their all grieving differently and it’s just hard right now.” Izzie said as she down the rest of her wine and then nodded her head. She was truly thankful for Alex and the kind of co-parenting relationship they had. It took some time, but they were friends now and Izzie was grateful. “I know Alex, thank you. How’s everything going with you and Jo? How are the kids?” 

“Not as good as yours,” Alex replied, with a smile. He chewed his own for a second, thinking. Izzy definitely looked flat and it wasn’t like Alex could blame her. 

He’d been trying to think of a way he could ask how she was doing without being the guy at the party who reminded her that her husband fucking died. But there wasn’t really a way that he could do that. The silence was starting to go on for too long as he thought. “Look, I don’t know if maybe you don’t want me to ask, but… how’re you holding up?”

Just because she wasn’t lying on a bathroom floor, or baking too many muffins to fit in a kitchen, didn’t mean she was fine.

“thanks alex. you guys always did like when i baked when we were interns.” she thought about the good old times, when there were five of them. she sighed when he asked if she was okay and gently, she nodded her head. “i’m doing okay. you know, taking it day by day and honestly, just putting my focus into work and the kids. it helps, i don’t know if it’s the healthiest way to grieve but it’s working for right now.” izzie shrugged her shoulders and took another bite of the cupcake. 

“i do love seeing all the different costumes - but i wouldn’t be lying if i said that i’d rather be at home with my kids. maybe baking some halloween desserts.” izzie sighed as she leaned against one of the tables and looked around the room. “though, i should be grateful nobody is staring. you know? the widow and the girl who’s lost a husband and fiance. it doesn’t slip under the radar with the gossiping nurses.”

“Well no, see the thing is that this costume wasn’t my idea at all. But it was an easy enough costume to make happen. There’s a surprising amount of shirts that look like Ernie’s and then I really just had to go out and grab a rubber duck from the story.” Mark explained to the individual who was beside him, taking a long swig of alcohol. “Yeah, see it was that menace over there who came up with the idea.” He explained, pointing at Amelia as she walked by.

“well, that makes alot more sense. i never really pictured you as a sesame street guy.” izzie said taking a sip of her wine and then laughing. “but it does suit you pretty well. kudos to amelia for actually getting you to pull it off. the rubber ducky is a nice touch, most people would’ve left out. but little do they know, ernie never went anywhere without it.”

The halloween party was about as expected. Alex was working the food tables, having just got off a shift, when he caught sight of Izzy. He’d tried to give her some space after her husband’s funeral so it was the first time he’d seen her in a while. He placed a handful of mummified pumpkin cookies on his plate and headed over to her. 

“Yo, Iz have you seen these? The baked goods here are actually decent enough that you might not be offended by them.” He held out his plate, offering her one. 

izzie wasn’t thrilled about going to the halloween party - sure, she liked parties and she loved halloween, but ever since her husband passed away it didn’t seem the same. she also didn’t want to be seen as some sad widow and didn’t feel like everybody staring at her. the blonde was happy when she found alex at the party, a familiar face. “i have seen them, but haven’t taste them yet. are they really worth it?” she questioned looking at the baked goods and then shrugging her shoulders, before actually taking one off the tray. “hmm, it is pretty good.” 

This was embarrassing, completely and utterly embarrassing. Arizona was settled in an on call room, leaning against the wall as she sat on the bed, hacking up a lung. Who came to work sick? Not her usually to be fair, but in her fevered state, she may have said some things to piss Callie off that she had no explanation for and now here she was banished. In between hacks it was only then did she realize that someone now stood in the doorway, and she gasped. “Please don’t tell anyone you saw me like this. I’m begging you.”

izzie had just been at the hospital for 16 hours and finally had a minute to grab a little rest. she made her way to an on-call room. “arizona? are you okay?” she questioned, not wanting to get involved with someone else business. “don’t worry - your secret is safe with me.” 

"The best perk of working in the cafeteria has to be the free food at the end of the day. Saves food waste and then I don't have to make my own supper. Worst part is the fact that I eat way more than I should. And that by the end of the day most of the desserts are gone."

“that does sound like a pretty good perk to me. i mean, who doesn’t like free food?” izzie smiled as she looked at the younger boy, who looked familar to her but she couldn’t place who he looked liked. “they do say dessert is the best part of a meal.”
