THE OCEAN
When the Goddess of the Seas split Assyria into seven kingdoms and designated seven mermaid princesses to rule them, no one seemed to question or fight their fate. Each princess was born from their kingdomâs gemstone and that was enough to determine their next ruler. However, when Isla was born, the mermaids of the South Atlantic Ocean had to wonder if there was a mistake for the first time. It was obvious from the beginning that the princess wasnât a natural born leader, she was too restless to stay in one place and too careless to make important decisions.Â
Isla was always a bit of a stereotype. While the other mermaids were preparing for war, she was more interested in exploring sunken ships for treasure, combing her long blonde hair with broken shells, and swimming through the South Atlantic Ocean as fast as she could. The others looked to her for guidance, but she had none to give. She wanted nothing to do with the war they seemed so determined to fight. Isla never asked to be a princess, and if given a choice, she wouldâve gladly handed over the title to someone else, but the Sea Goddess determined her fate. It was her birthright, chosen for her by the gemstone on her neck.
It was because she didnât have a choice that Isla never took her rule seriously. She had the tendency to be a flake, disappearing from her pod for days to go on her own adventures. Just because there was a war going on didnât mean she had to be involved, and so she wasnât. Her negligence frustrated her pod, but when they expressed their feelings to herâtheir desire for her to lead them, she would dismiss them, reminding them that they didnât have to fight. When Isla saw the displeased faces staring back at her, she shouldâve felt guilty for disappointing them, but she didnât. Isla wasnât a ruler, and she couldnât lead a battle, so while Assyria continued to fall apart around her, she closed her eyes and lived in her own little world.
ON LAND
No matter how much Isla ignored the war, the war didnât stop. Mermaids and sirens went missing or died, villages were destroyed, and still she did nothing to help stop it. Her pod quickly began to dwindle as they escaped to land, and she decided to join them, seeing it as yet another adventure. She braved land a few times in her long life, and she was eager to mingle with the humans again. Isla would treat living on land about as seriously as she treated the ocean, like a practical joke. How much could she play with the humans? How many hints could she drop about being a mermaid before she turned into sea foam? She was eager to find out--as long as she didnât have to hear about this silly war anymore.Â
PERSONALITY
Despite being 108 years old, Isla hasnât developed or grown much as a mermaid. She values comfort and fun above anything else. Sheâs light-hearted and relatively harmless, but her careless and avoidant personality still causes harm. While everyone else seems to be grounded in reality and willing to fight, Isla would much rather ignore the truth if it means inconveniencing her too much. She hasnât experienced true loss yet, and it makes it easy for her to turn everything into a joke and ignore her responsibilities. On land, she plans on playing with humans like theyâre her little toys even with the threat of turning into seafoam hanging over her head.Â
CONNECTIONS
TOPAZ: she is naive, and sometimes that drives you crazy, but you see her heart of gold and the vast deepness she cares with â you knew she needed a friend and that friend you became. youâre by her side through thick and thin, all the while trying to get her to let loose and have some fun once in a while.
PORCELAIN: no one ever said he had to stick around so close, but then again, youâve never complained about it. your courts always worry you are too reckless, too hedonistic⌠but he keeps you in check enough that they stay off your back. so you welcome his company, even if you wish he would knock off the worrying. in port vale, you feel the freedom kissing your soul, and even he canât hold you back from chasing whatever fun is to be had on land.
PLATINUM: as far as sirens go⌠she isnât that bad. youâd never admit it to another mermaid, but you like the siren captain of the caribbean sea, quite a bit. neither of you care too much about this war, and itâs not like you are strangers, or even all that different⌠port vale has promised so much, and youâre watching now, expecting her to make the first move. you would, but fear the courtâs reaction.
