Artist Statement: monumental / un-monumental: beautifying and nullifying passion and hurt.
The second project has been another interesting exploration for me as an artist. I was happy with the aesthetic created in the first project, and therefore decided to focus more on conceptual motivation for the work. This drove me to consider the medium of photography, and explore the concept of obscuring meaning by concealing recognisable features of an image. I aimed to achieve this by painting photographs white and presenting them as folded forms similar to those from the first project. In this form, the work held a lot of emotional significance for me, as I intended to photograph those who mean the most to me, and then conceal them, almost enacting the sheltered privacy I sometimes possess in terms of my emotional torments. I thought I had planned the resolved work and would simply go through the motions of creating it; however, it frustrated me having a final outcome so early in the project, and I wanted to go through more of a process and exploration of media. So I gave myself a problem: to make something different for the sake of it.
The idea of broken glass has been consistent throughout the semester, and it became more relevant during this project. I think it also holds symbolism in terms of the emotional motivations behind the work. The idea of defacing is also evident in my final project. I defaced materials from the first project by cutting them up, then transformed them through photography and digital imaging, before experimenting with printing and layering with translucency. I continued cutting and folding to create forms that would be assembled onto a pane of Perspex, creating an effect reminiscent of shards of shattered glass. This is juxtaposed with photographs, which are defaced by being painted white, together creating a clean monochromatic architectural installation that features repetition of motifs and that interacts with light and shadow.
