most of the time i like my job but at least once a week i am reminded of the reasons i was (and still am) TERRIFIED of project engineering. like im sure i will stop endlessly messing up eventually but god damn it am i such an exhausted idiot

#i mean the job is fine im the problem (nother Super Long Tag Ramble incoming will delete later but hell i need to get things off my chest)#at least if anyone says anything i can truthfully reply “well i neither applied for nor accepted this specific job!”#applied for (and got!) a job as a reliability engineer which to me seemed a good niche between dull paperwork and insane capital projects #and i get there and apparently like two weeks before i started they switched me to projects and just didn't tell me.#like i found out when i went up to say hi to the person who mentored me during my internship #and he was like “oh [manager] has some projects for you!” and i was just like. wait. he what. why is [manager] assigning me projects.#anyways onto Today's Major Fuck Up: accidentally used “as soon as possible” with VERY MUCH THE WRONG VENDOR #learned two lessons the hard way today #1) always send a follow up email. ALWAYS. called a sales rep i had asked to get me a quote three weeks ago to follow up and they Forgot.#now the closest thing i have to documentation is a call log saying i called him mid-July #2) USE SPECIFIC DATES. DO NOT JUST SAY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. made this mistake thinking “oh it'll take a day or two to process will say asap #uh. yeah no. they sent me the info two hours ago like “btw it'll get here tomorrow can we have the PO number?” and now im screwed.#got to chase down an order of pipe fittings (again) cause i forgot we got an order or two in before locking in a contractor and stored em #i love working here but man despite my best efforts i am just. not good at it yet.#have an ever growing mental tally of “things that will (somewhat) fix me”#most will definitely help. like “new shoes” “not daily misfiring car” “long term apartment” “phone that can make calls” “survive to october #getting either a new or newer car cause im tired of these issues continuously popping up #like if it was just another coil fine i can do that. it's a 2 hour job max and $60 but it's the catalytic converter among other things #had a sit down with my parents asking what they thought and the general consensus was “yeah don't put $1500-2000 more into the '08 beater”#i mean it's not out of nowhere. spent most of my internships saving VERY aggressively for a new car so have enough set aside #got lucky with housing as an intern so fully lived off my relocation stipend and my entire paycheck went to (and stayed in) savings #i got 99 problems and i love her but my '08 camry is at least thirty of em #wouldn't fix my anxiety but would do wonders to have a car i KNOW will make my commute #like im out here saying my prayers everytime i drive up a hill. god forbid someone's behind me.#got stuck at 30 in a 55 on a hill once with a semi behind me and a stuttering engine. almost had a god damn heart attack #she's just like me though. we can be barely functioning overwhelmed disasters TOGETHER #on the plus side as a result of a quarter of my job being Phone Call i can now make a phone call without hyping myself up for two hours #and at least there is the novelty of getting to just wander around a paper mill. you can get a lot of places with a company hard hat #i know they don't expect me to be perfect straight out of college and i shouldn't expect it but i just can't get that through my thick skul #like to me perfection is the bare minimum and anything else is a Moral Failing. been trying to unlearn this to no avail.

When I was in college, my Stage Craft teacher showed us this. Basically the machine heats up a sheet of plastic, and once it’s malleable enough it’ll be blown up to make room for whatever you want to imprint in the plastic. Once it’s in place, the air reverses and the plastic vacuum-sucks all around the object.

He demonstrated it on a baby doll and it was like a baby had been frozen in carbonite. I got to take it home and I still have frozen-carbonite-baby to this day (his name is Franklin XD)
