My wife and I have been discussing whether or not Lady Monica *should* or *could* have ended up with Dame Edna. Like, the show has a gay relationship which is treated exactly the same as all of the hetero relationships (doomed, fraught with secrecy), so the show isn't immediately killing all the gays.
But when she spoke with Lizzie about having had a love that she couldn't pursue... And then she gets up the courage to leave Tony. And when he spits at her that she is dead from the waist down, she says she wasn't always. The woman is thinking about the butch on the board of Venturer. She's thinking about Dame Edna, who thinks Lady Monica's Queen Titania was better than Maud O'Hara's.
And so when she leaves Tony, then we're definitely thinking she's going to end up with Dame Enid. But she dies. And it's devastating. And she won't get her happy ending, and she won't get to take Tony over the coals. But maybe her leaving him for another woman would just have been too big a scandal, even for these books. I said they could have lived as "room mates" as so often it is seen.
But then we find out that in the books they end up together! The middle-aged lesbians hook the fuck up and while people are shocked, they're just so wholesome that ultimately no one gives a shit.
So now I'm extra strength pissed off that they took that away from us! Wholesome middle-aged lesbians STOLEN from us during pride month.
