Yesterday I ran the Avalon 50 miler. I think it went pretty decently. This race has been on my list of races I’ve wanted to do ever since I came out to Catalina island for the first time as part of a school field trip back in 2015. Didn’t intend to run fast but when you’re being chased for 20+ miles, it’s kinda hard not to. The JFK 50 Mile. 6:05 to place 7th in the fastest top 10 in the race’s 59 year history. Missed the start of the race. Took a tumble on the Appalachian Trail around mile 14. Almost got stuck behind a train crossing onto the towpath but THE highlight of the whole race was keeping pace with said train for two miles. Lack of fitness caught up to me around mile 27 and by mile 33 I was ready to drop. But after a couple miles of running till I physically couldn’t and then walking 30 seconds, I found myself with 8 miles left and figured that I should be able to finish. A day of ups and downs but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I probably won’t be able to walk for a couple days but I guess that’s a sign of a fun day. Finally a finish line. It’s been over a year since the last time I finished a race. Weeks of inconsistent training and life stress did their best to derail this one as well but there’s something about being immersed in the sights and sounds of nature that brings peace to everything.
