Begining of the term we were set a project to work within groups to create our own little strand magazine, based on anything we want! The group I'm collaborating with all equally made a decision to make this magazine more of a promotion/kick starter to our professional practice in the real world.

Starting off gathering a visual mood board of different types of magazines to zines and what not, we searched from tumblr, pintrest, creative bloq to more to research visually what attracts the viewer to be interested to a magazine. I started off sketching ideas and composition visuals for my group to stick with a specific format.

Discussing in a group its a fact that we all love free stuff and little add ons. So we decided to create an A5 magazine that’s placed into a paper bag (giving the intention of a sweet bag to a big kid) with our own stickers and bookmarks to our magazine as a use for the reader and promotion! .

‘THEIR BEARD IS THEIR UNIVERSE’ series is finally done!

Ive probably mentioned the whole idea of this collection on another post, but i’ll simplify it !

ITS ALIVE!

In a page of my sketchbook I wanted to explore a series of hipsters dominant feature which is their beards, and show how its their universe. Meaning the beards show ‘dominance’ or their ego.. The bigger the beard equals the alpha hipster? Anyways I wanted to show how their beards is the most important feature to be apart of this trend. How its their universe. 

Pin pointing what makes a hipster, this was already in everybody's thoughts but never knew there was another category of the type of hipster you are. 

Reading this article and viewing others experimenting with this all over social media, it confirms that its a new trend. But a trend trying out a new trend? It seems that a majority of ‘hipsters’ are trying this out with their overly grown, groomed facial hair.

This instagram account shows two men (who meets the requirements of being a top hipster) who are experimenting putting objects into their beards. This would be fun to incorporate into my drawings and taking the micky out of the trend even further. 

Before getting introduced to the brief I already tried to think of different possible interpretations and the definition to the word taste and how I can tackle it without knowing what exactly the brief is asking for.

Researching the term I came across this “In sociology taste is an individuals personal and cultural patterns of choice and preference. It is drawing distinctions between things such as styles, manners, consumer goods and works of art and relating to these. It is the human ability to judge what is beautiful, good and proper.” Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgement (1790)

On Tuesday’s studio practice with Jo we started off reflecting on what we did in our last project which we could of done better.. Listing down how we left things to the last minute, changing themes, not enough research, not enough of a good body of work etc. And then totally changing the table and listing what we need to be doing in the beginning of the project.

 Pretty simple tasks but as a whole group discussing, engaging and sharing their faults and ideas, it really kicked start the whole group!

Out of this session I've learnt that I seriously needed to plan and almost schedule my timing better. Visually planning out the days and time im free to get the most out of the week before coming back to our next session empty handed or not enough work put into the hours. I’ll upload my first week planning guide to show how i’m not just stacking and layering information and ideas into my head without jotting them down and working from it.

Finally found the name of the forest!!! Lower Fell Greave!

This may sound seriously nerdy but I think that was thee most helpful one to one session I’ve had during my experience at uni! Explainng my progress and thoughts to Jo seriously made me felt she was engaged and eager to actually help and improve my work. I was struggling and baffled to where I was going and over complicating the project for myself when the brief is pretty much simple. I was already sketching possible final outcomes to create when i haven't even gathered enough information and process towards it! 

We both came to a conclusion to scrap my idea of comparing two different sites  to show the differences and trying to find the urban culture within. It was too ambitious and no real point to it: I was basically stressing myself out with over complicating things to a simple project when the brief is only asking for one thing! Documentation. 

Seriously, documenting my process and anything to everything that I've gathered for my particular site. She showed me her own sketchbook of surveying different forms and styles of one thing. Explaining to me i’m way too restricted and controlling my drawings too much when really I have to be lose and gather the simplest things in different mediums and techniques. We narrowed down my project for this brief and rather than surveying two sites, I’m going to narrow down the rail station and try to investigate what makes  the rail station urban or trying to find what doesn't make it urban or finding what is missing. Breaking it down Jo than gave me a few example how to survey or document this such as tracing a chewing gum, and than drawing from it in different forms and using different materials and so on.
