100 Prompts of Fluff (Part 1)
Some more InuKag! Set in mid-canon this time :) Again, little tweaking for context. Enjoy!
11. “I had a nightmare … can I stay with you tonight?”
There are things you take for granted, and only realize how good they are once they’re gone. For Kagome, that thing was her bed. She missed her family, her friends, she even vaguely missed school when she out fighting literal demons, but if there was one thing she would have taken with her, it would have been her bed, mattress, pillow and duvet included. Sure, she had gotten used to her sleeping bag, to the hard ground under her, and she didn’t complain about it, but still. Her bed was a magical thing to come back to.
After taking a long bath — bathes were quite amazing, too, but there were hot springs in the Feudal Era —, putting on her favorite, blue-with-little-white-clouds pyjama, she wanted nothing more than to finally have one good night indoors. She wasn’t scared in the Feudal Era, knowing that Inuyasha would never let anything happen to her, but she couldn’t say she enjoyed hearing everything happening in nature.
She slid under the covers, sighing with content as the warmth engulfed her. She buried her face in her huge, soft pillow, enjoying the mattress under her. She had changed it since first leaving for the Feudal Era, as her old one had started feeling too soft, but this was just… right. Heaven. She was in heaven.
And, as she had learned during the past months, heaven never lasted long.
She had closed her eyes for what felt like less than a minute when there was a knock against her window, and of course, her eyes shot open immediately. One look at her clock told her that it was both far too late and too early to be reasonable. She had promised Inuyasha to come back in the morning, but dammit, she wanted one night of peace.
With an extremely inelegant grunt, she pulled herself out of her bed, out of heaven, and sleepily walked to the window to slide it open. Inuyasha could have done it himself, of course, but no, he just had to wake her up.
She didn’t bother greeting him before falling back into bed, but she frowned when he realized he hadn’t gotten into the room.
“What are you doing? I’m not leaving with you tonight, even if there are rumors about a Jewel shard.”
Inuyasha hesitantly stepped into the room and slid the window close.
Kagome rolled around to look at him. He was clutching Tessaiga so tightly in his hand that his knuckles were white.
“Can I— can I stay here tonight?”
The ‘with you’ didn’t make it past his lips, but Kagome heard it all the same.
Her voice was soft, gentle, and somehow that made him want to cry. He dropped next to her bed, fully intent on staying there for the night. Kagome watched him for a while. She knew he was too proud to say anything, but after watching him doze off and jump awake a dozen times, she decided to take the matter in her own hands.
“The bed’s big enough for two. You should get in, Inuyasha.”
His ears perked up, and she grinned, knowing that meant he enjoyed the proposition.
There was a moment of silence after that, during which Kagome simply watched him carefully. Finally, he got up, leaving Tessaiga on the ground, knowing she wouldn’t appreciate having the blade in her bed, and laid down beside her. For a moment, since she hadn’t turned around, he simply stared at the back of her head. Her flowy, freshly washed hair smelled good, and he found himself wanting to play with it.
Slowly, he moved closer, and without knowing exactly how, he moved his arm around her.
Kagome didn’t ask questions, because she knew he wasn’t good with answers. He let out a small sigh and brought her against him, breathing in her scent, allowing her warmth radiate through him and drive the nightmares away.
He knew by morning, it would all be shattered, and Kagome knew he wouldn’t act like that again, that it wouldn’t change the current status quo between them. But for now… She closed her eyes and sunk in his embrace.
For now, this could be their heaven.
