Hi there! I’m Ko Triadson — for the fae, no you can’t have my name. My first name was already technically taken, anyways. I go by she/they/it.

I’m technically an Intern at The ESC, despite having all the rights of a scientist, like my own lab and assistant and getting paid. You can talk to my assistant(s) here! @ko-mpanions

Chapter I: The Hero and The <Princess/Prince>

The Narrator

[ YOU'RE ON A PATH IN THE WOODS. AND AT THE END OF THAT PATH IS A CABIN. AND IN THE BASEMENT OF THAT CABIN IS A <PRINCESS/PRINCE>. YOU'RE HERE TO SLAY <HER/HIM>. IF YOU DON'T, IT WILL BE THE END OF THE WORLD. ]

*Ko blinks. Okay, then…*

“And… why, exactly, will it be the end of the world?*

*She starts to walk along the path as she talks. It’s not fully sure it’ll get an answer…*

*…Ko isn’t sure how to feel about having another narrator. But she’ll listen. This was his plan.*

*This was the choice she made — to trust him. She won’t back out now.*

“Alright. I’ll take the blade, then. I’ll proceed.”

*Ko reaches down. She grabs the blade.*

The Narrator

[ YOU REACH DOWN TO TAKE THE BLADE, BUT AS YOU DO, THE GROUND BENEATH IT SHIFTS, THE WEAPON SINKING DEEP INTO THE EARTH. YOU LEAN OVER THE HOLE AND GAZE INTO THE ABYSS. IT IS SO VERY DEEP. DEEP IN THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH, YOU SEE SOMETHING STARING BACK AT YOU. IT FILLS YOU WITH DREAD. ]

[It's the Prince's mask.]

Voice of the Hero: "It's him."

Voice of the Paranoid: "He's watching us. He never stops watching us."

"I told you I would tip the scales!"

The Narrator

[ WITH EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS, THE PRINCE IN THE PIT BLINKS CLOSER. ]

[As he approaches, you can see he has multiple floating arms. ]

"I'm glad you could trust me on this."

The Narrator

[ AND CLOSER. ]

"I know how this looks. It was the only way. You needed to understand."

The Narrator

[ AND CLOSER. ]

"I've taken control of everything. Now, all you need to do is to let me out. One last time."

[One of his many hands reach out to you.]

The Narrator

[ DO SOMETHING! DO ANYTHING THAT ISN'T TAKING HIS HAND! ]

Voice of the Hero: "What are we supposed to do? We trust him more than you."

Voice of the Paranoid: "There's no paralysis anymore. Is it because we've already given him what he wants?"

[You're just an object.] [A tool.] [You once were something else, a long time ago.] [But was that something you, or is it just a dull and jaded memory?] [There is no other ending here.] [Just take his hand, and set him free.]

*Ko smiles at the mask. It’s familiar; a nice sight, in the unfamiliar.*

“Hah, that you did. I’m glad you’re not buried, Prince. The lack of stairs was… a little frightening.”

*Sorry, Narrator. But… Ko made her choice in this; the choice to trust him. And even if she didn’t; what is she to do? Leave him there? That won’t work out very well. They can both tell, can’t they?*

*He deserves to be freed. He deserves to live. Just as you do, Narrator. Just as all of them do. Safety can be found; it can be created.*

*Also; other narrator. Ko doesn’t exactly enjoy being referred to as an object. Or a tool, but she can understand that one much more. What is the something that she was? If it was her, she’s forgotten.*

*They reach their hand out.*

"I am a Nightmare. What did you expect? Butterflies and rainbows? But I'm glad I'm not buried, either. It was one of the many risks I had to take. Another was this person in red. I don't think they were supposed to be here, but they were very aggressive. But then I pulled my mask off and realized they were scared of me. That made the rest easier."

[Glass cracking could be heard. The Prince seems to smirk.]

"Oops. I believe that was your doing."

The Narrator

[ YOU EXTEND YOUR HAND TO HIS. FOR ALL HIS PAST CRUELTIES, THE MOMENT FEELS GENTLE, TENDER EVEN. WE CAN'T BELIEVE YOU JUST MADE US SAY THAT. WE HATE YOU. ]

[Another crack. The Narrator winces in pain.]

The Narrator

[ THE MOTION IS DIFFICULT AT FIRST, AS IF SOMETHING STILL RESISTS YOUR EFFORTS, BUT THEN THAT RESISTANCE GIVES WAY, AND IT'S OVER. THE PRINCE CRAWLS OUT OF THE ABYSS AND LETS OUT A SIGH OF RELIEF. YOU CAN SEE HIM IN FULL GLORY. THE MASK IS MORE CRACKED THAN IT WAS BEFORE AND YOU CAN SEE BLACK MIST COMING FROM THEM. THE SEVEN ARMS SPREAD OUT. ]

"I wonder what we will do next..."

*Ko sticks their tongue out at him.* “Butterflies would’ve been nice. I’ve found I prefer spiders, though. And rainbows… usually need a light source. Assuming that would be the sun, that would be pretty unpleasant for me.”

“They were probably scared because of the whole… world-ending thing. The wall was red, too.”

*…Sorry, Narrator. I know how much you probably hate this. All of it. I’m sorry you’re breaking.*

*Ko hugs him, as soon as he gains his footing.* “Your mask is cracking. Are you okay?”

[Hugging the Prince is like hugging mist with an actual form, cold and a little wet.]

"Too bad they won't see the fruits of my labor. The mask is fine. That happened once the person in red become unresponsive. I think I broke them too. Oh well."

[The Prince looks around.]

"I didn't think I'd be so... tired."

[the Prince, exhausted, slumps.]

"Why is it so cold?"

*Ko isn’t all that worried about the feeling. Her wings are similar — a solid wind. Why wouldn’t he be able to be like a solid mist?*

“That… doesn’t sound good, Prince. It broke on its own? Or-“

*…Tired. Cold.*

*Tired? Cold?*

*Oh.*

*Ko hugs him tighter, refusing to let go. That, and the mask breaking… it’s not a good sign, is it?*

“It’s okay, Prince. Rest. I won’t leave you.”

“Please don’t die.”

[Blue tendrils covered with eyes surround the Prince. They cover his whole body, then both the Prince and the tendrils disappear. Your vision becomes fuzzier until you're in a gray void of a room. In the middle stands the mirror you saw before.]

[he does not get the chance to respond, nor will he ever. it's time to leave. memory returns.]

Voice of the Broken: "He's gone."

Voice of the Skeptic: "Yeah. I can finally think again. Almost."

Voice of the Hero: "That mirror's back…"

Voice of the Contrarian: "What does that mean for us?"

Voice of the Cheated: "I'm sure it'll be whisked away just like him."

Voice of the Hunted: "Maybe it won't be gone. Things are different now, aren't they?"

Voice of the Paranoid: "It doesn't seem like there's much else to do here."

Voice of the Stubborn: "Finally. We can smash it."

Voice of the Cold: "Oh, will you stop with the smashing?"

Voice of the Smitten: "What do we say, ladies? One last vain attempt to look at ourselves?"

Voice of the Hero: "Yeah. I think I'd like that."

Voice of the Opportunist: "Seems we've got a majority. All that's left is to give it a look."

*Ko feels a part of her break. It didn’t work. It didn’t work it didn’t work it didn’t-*

*…She should stop. Before she scares someone. She’s sorry.*

“Okay! Let’s go, then.”

*She’ll see them on the other side. Or… she’ll see Hero, at least. The rest… it was nice to meet them. Or see them again. Either or.*

*Ko steps up to the mirror, slowly.*

[you step towards the mirror once more. its secrets remain hidden. its mysteries remain unresolved.]

Voice of the Hero: "Something tells me that this is the end of the line, but I don't feel bad about it. I'm ready."

Voice of the Broken: "It feels okay."

Voice of the Paranoid: "The fear's gone."

Voice of the Stubborn: "I'm done fighting."

Voice of the Smitten: "My heart feels quiet."

Voice of the Cheated: "The game was always going to end."

Voice of the Cold: "I'll be free of all of you."

Voice of the Skeptic: "I'm ready for the truth."

Voice of the Hunted: "I'm ready to sleep."

Voice of the Contrarian: "I'm just ready to be anywhere that isn't here."

Voice of the Opportunist: "Ladies, it's been an honor."

*…Huh. Usually, they’re gone by this point. It’s a surprise, but a welcome one.*

*She’s glad that they feel comforted by the mirror, at least.*

“Yeah. Yeah. It’ll be okay.”

*Ko reaches for the mirror.*

[you approach the mirror. the Voices feel small, distant, as you approach.]

[You see your own reflection. Your eyes glow in the glass. You can see that what remains of your arm are bones. There's no sign of the skin which was there previously.]

[you've Unraveled.]

“Oh, that is… a term. One I don’t think I’m supposed to like, for some reason.”

*Ko glances at her arms, not at the mirror. Is her skin still visibly there, at least? Or does she need to cover more to look… passably human?*

*it already has to hide so much… arms and eyes and hooves and hands…*

[your arms still have flesh on them. it is only the reflection which doesn't. the mirror disappears.]

[The mirror fades. You can see a blue figure in the distance, where the cabin would be.]

*Ko relaxes, immediately feeling better. She knows, now.*

*One more time.*

*She’ll manage. They have to.*

*She hops towards the Prince.*

*One last try.*

[The Prince stands upright, suspended in the darkness. Countless writhing blue tendrils surround him like a horrifying halo, each one studded with unblinking eyes that stare in every direction. The tendrils coil around each of the floating arms, as well as his waist. His many palms are forced open and facing you, as though he is being displayed. A dark strip of cloth wraps around the cracked mask, covering his eyes. He wears clothing worthy of a prince, though something is deeply wrong with it. The royal coat is torn and stained, the fine fabric shredded at the edges as though dragged through something terrible. Long white gloves reach to his elbows, stark against the ruined outfit. On his head sits a crown, withered and bent, missing pieces, barely clinging. His expression is still, almost peaceful, though the tendrils are the only thing holding him in place.]

"There's a world beyond the conforming and oppressive walls of The Vault. We are curious to see what it means for us to know it."

*Ko smiles at him, weakly.*

“This last one was… rough, Prince. But I’m glad you’ll be whole again, soon. I’m glad you’ll be able to leave and see, soon.”

"We are sorry this Vessel caused so much strife. Pain is a part of life, as much as some may wish to rid it. He is not gone. He will be a part of us, now. And if you wish, he will live on. Just not separately."

“Oh- no, no. Nightmare was sweet. Minus the whole looking-at-him-killed-me for a bit, thing, but I don’t think that was on purpose. Rough in the sense of… I thought it would be over, and then it wasn’t and I was in the void again.”

“…Just one more Vessel, right?”

"That is correct. One last Vessel, until we are free. We have a feeling this time will be different. The Triangle is nervous. They will not acknowledge this."

*Ko’s hand automatically brushes against the keychain on her Bag; the Bag she can’t access, right now, but is there nonetheless.*

“…Yeah. I don’t think they ever would. Not to the public, at least.” *Her voice is quiet, with that. She shakes their head.*

“One last time. I’ll see you there, Prince. I would ask if there’s anything in particular you think you’re missing, but… I won’t remember, anyways. So it matters little.”

“I’ll try to be careful, though. Thank you for the warning.”

"There is a part of you which remembers everything. Your instincts will drive you. Before you go, we would like to ask if you wish to see a fragment of the truth."

“…That part of me is… the type to hide things, if we’re talking about the same thing.” *Ko sounds a little bitter, a dry laugh following the statement.*

*She hesitates, before nodding.* “…Yeah. May as well. I am curious.”

"We are. You'll have to figure something out with it. That part of you will be more than helpful if you let it. After all, why do you think you are gaining Voices each time you fail? Where do you think they come from?"

[a tendril reaches out to you, like a hand.]

“We have… some level of arrangement, don’t worry. They don’t hinder me, at least.” *Ko tilts her head. She… hadn’t really thought much of it.* “I thought it was just a side effect of the world? Like how my Bag doesn’t work, and how the Blade can kill me.”

*Ko bumps her head against the tendril, affectionately.*

"The Voices are a symptom. You are correct. As is your missing Bag and the Blade. You never questioned why those Voices sound like your own?"

“I had bigger issues to worry about, like figuring out where I was or the looping. Plus, voices that appeared in my head upon arriving in this world… they could sound like anything, couldn’t they? Something familiar, like my own voice, would make a level of sense. I guess I chalked it up to them being some level of… subconscious, or something. Or More Beings that got into my head and decided to sound like me. Mi usually uses my voice, so it’s not unheard of.”

YOU CAN SEE HIM IN FULL GLORY. THE MASK IS MORE CRACKED THAN IT WAS BEFORE AND YOU CAN SEE BLACK MIST COMING FROM THEM. THE SEVEN ARMS SPREAD OUT. ]

"I wonder what we will do next..."

*Ko sticks their tongue out at him.* “Butterflies would’ve been nice. I’ve found I prefer spiders, though. And rainbows… usually need a light source. Assuming that would be the sun, that would be pretty unpleasant for me.”

“They were probably scared because of the whole… world-ending thing. The wall was red, too.”

*Ko hugs him, as soon as he gains his footing.* “Your mask is cracking. Are you okay?”

[The Prince stands upright, suspended in the darkness. Countless writhing blue tendrils surround him like a horrifying halo, each one studded with unblinking eyes that stare in every direction. The tendrils coil around each of the floating arms, as well as his waist. His many palms are forced open and facing you, as though he is being displayed. A dark strip of cloth wraps around the cracked mask, covering his eyes. He wears clothing worthy of a prince, though something is deeply wrong with it. The royal coat is torn and stained, the fine fabric shredded at the edges as though dragged through something terrible. Long white gloves reach to his elbows, stark against the ruined outfit. On his head sits a crown, withered and bent, missing pieces, barely clinging. His expression is still, almost peaceful, though the tendrils are the only thing holding him in place.]

"There's a world beyond the conforming and oppressive walls of The Vault. We are curious to see what it means for us to know it."

*Ko smiles at him, weakly.*

“This last one was… rough, Prince. But I’m glad you’ll be whole again, soon. I’m glad you’ll be able to leave and see, soon.”

The tendrils coil around each of the floating arms, as well as his waist. His many palms are forced open and facing you, as though he is being displayed. A dark strip of cloth wraps around the cracked mask, covering his eyes. He wears clothing worthy of a prince, though something is deeply wrong with it. The royal coat is torn and stained, the fine fabric shredded at the edges as though dragged through something terrible. Long white gloves reach to his elbows, stark against the ruined outfit. On his head sits a crown, withered and bent, missing pieces, barely clinging. His expression is still, almost peaceful, though the tendrils are the only thing holding him in place.]

"There's a world beyond the conforming and oppressive walls of The Vault. We are curious to see what it means for us to know it."

*Ko smiles at him, weakly.*

“This last one was… rough, Prince. But I’m glad you’ll be whole again, soon. I’m glad you’ll be able to leave and see, soon.”

Voice of the Hero: "What are we supposed to do? We trust him more than you."

Voice of the Paranoid: "There's no paralysis anymore. Is it because we've already given him what he wants?"

[You're just an object.] [A tool.] [You once were something else, a long time ago.] [But was that something you, or is it just a dull and jaded memory?] [There is no other ending here.] [Just take his hand, and set him free.]

*Ko smiles at the mask. It’s familiar; a nice sight, in the unfamiliar.*

“Hah, that you did. I’m glad you’re not buried, Prince. The lack of stairs was… a little frightening.”

*Sorry, Narrator. But… Ko made her choice in this; the choice to trust him. And even if she didn’t; what is she to do? Leave him there? That won’t work out very well. They can both tell, can’t they?*

*He deserves to be freed. He deserves to live. Just as you do, Narrator. Just as all of them do. Safety can be found; it can be created.*

*Also; other narrator. Ko doesn’t exactly enjoy being referred to as an object. Or a tool, but she can understand that one much more. What is the something that she was? If it was her, she’s forgotten.*

I don't think they were supposed to be here, but they were very aggressive. But then I pulled my mask off and realized they were scared of me. That made the rest easier."

[Glass cracking could be heard. The Prince seems to smirk.]

"Oops. I believe that was your doing."

[ YOU EXTEND YOUR HAND TO HIS. FOR ALL HIS PAST CRUELTIES, THE MOMENT FEELS GENTLE, TENDER EVEN. WE CAN'T BELIEVE YOU JUST MADE US SAY THAT. WE HATE YOU. ]

[Another crack. The Narrator winces in pain.]

[ THE MOTION IS DIFFICULT AT FIRST, AS IF SOMETHING STILL RESISTS YOUR EFFORTS, BUT THEN THAT RESISTANCE GIVES WAY, AND IT'S OVER. THE PRINCE CRAWLS OUT OF THE ABYSS AND LETS OUT A SIGH OF RELIEF. YOU CAN SEE HIM IN FULL GLORY. THE MASK IS MORE CRACKED THAN IT WAS BEFORE AND YOU CAN SEE BLACK MIST COMING FROM THEM. THE SEVEN ARMS SPREAD OUT. ]

"I wonder what we will do next..."

*Ko sticks their tongue out at him.* “Butterflies would’ve been nice. I’ve found I prefer spiders, though. And rainbows… usually need a light source. Assuming that would be the sun, that would be pretty unpleasant for me.”

“They were probably scared because of the whole… world-ending thing. The wall was red, too.”

*…Sorry, Narrator. I know how much you probably hate this. All of it. I’m sorry you’re breaking.*

*Ko hugs him, as soon as he gains his footing.* “Your mask is cracking. Are you okay?”

[Hugging the Prince is like hugging mist with an actual form, cold and a little wet.]

"Too bad they won't see the fruits of my labor. The mask is fine. That happened once the person in red become unresponsive. I think I broke them too. Oh well."

[The Prince looks around.]

"I didn't think I'd be so... tired."

[the Prince, exhausted, slumps.]

"Why is it so cold?"

*Ko isn’t all that worried about the feeling. Her wings are similar — a solid wind. Why wouldn’t he be able to be like a solid mist?*

“That… doesn’t sound good, Prince. It broke on its own? Or-“

*…Tired. Cold.*

*Tired? Cold?*

*Oh.*

*Ko hugs him tighter, refusing to let go. That, and the mask breaking… it’s not a good sign, is it?*

“It’s okay, Prince. Rest. I won’t leave you.”

“Please don’t die.”

[Blue tendrils covered with eyes surround the Prince. They cover his whole body, then both the Prince and the tendrils disappear. Your vision becomes fuzzier until you're in a gray void of a room. In the middle stands the mirror you saw before.]

[he does not get the chance to respond, nor will he ever. it's time to leave. memory returns.]

Voice of the Broken: "He's gone."

Voice of the Skeptic: "Yeah. I can finally think again. Almost."

Voice of the Hero: "That mirror's back…"

Voice of the Contrarian: "What does that mean for us?"

Voice of the Cheated: "I'm sure it'll be whisked away just like him."

Voice of the Hunted: "Maybe it won't be gone. Things are different now, aren't they?"

Voice of the Paranoid: "It doesn't seem like there's much else to do here."

Voice of the Stubborn: "Finally. We can smash it."

Voice of the Cold: "Oh, will you stop with the smashing?"

Voice of the Smitten: "What do we say, ladies? One last vain attempt to look at ourselves?"

Voice of the Hero: "Yeah. I think I'd like that."

Voice of the Opportunist: "Seems we've got a majority. All that's left is to give it a look."

*Ko feels a part of her break. It didn’t work. It didn’t work it didn’t work it didn’t-*

*…She should stop. Before she scares someone. She’s sorry.*

“Okay! Let’s go, then.”

*She’ll see them on the other side. Or… she’ll see Hero, at least. The rest… it was nice to meet them. Or see them again. Either or.*

*She starts to walk along the path as she talks. It’s not fully sure it’ll get an answer…*

*…Ko isn’t sure how to feel about having another narrator. But she’ll listen. This was his plan.*

*This was the choice she made — to trust him. She won’t back out now.*

“Alright. I’ll take the blade, then. I’ll proceed.”

*Ko reaches down. She grabs the blade.*

[ YOU REACH DOWN TO TAKE THE BLADE, BUT AS YOU DO, THE GROUND BENEATH IT SHIFTS, THE WEAPON SINKING DEEP INTO THE EARTH. YOU LEAN OVER THE HOLE AND GAZE INTO THE ABYSS. IT IS SO VERY DEEP. DEEP IN THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH, YOU SEE SOMETHING STARING BACK AT YOU. IT FILLS YOU WITH DREAD. ]

[It's the Prince's mask.]

Voice of the Hero: "It's him."

Voice of the Paranoid: "He's watching us. He never stops watching us."

"I told you I would tip the scales!"

[ WITH EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS, THE PRINCE IN THE PIT BLINKS CLOSER. ]

[As he approaches, you can see he has multiple floating arms. ]

"I'm glad you could trust me on this."
