alright, finally got done with some of the refactoring. things mostly look the same, but trust me, they're much neater on the back end now :D
worked on adding music and sound effects today!
still chuggin' along over here, but a lot of what i'm working on right now is sort of "behind the scenes" stuff.
i try to approach things with an iterative design process, because otherwise i would drive myself crazy lol.
so currently, i feel like i've got my first 'iteration'. a nice initial prototype for some core gameplay. however, the code is not optimized by any means. everything is kind of slapped together, as i wasn't following any design patterns yet.
now that i've got that prototype made, i understand a lot more about godot and how to work with it. so i'm refactoring what i have with that in mind and making better use of the observer design pattern.
i'd really like to make a devlog someday where i do a little code tour. go through what i have, talk about what i've changed and why, etc. figure it might be helpful to someone out there, idk.
ultimately, having a lot of fun, though! c: and that's what really matters.
super small progress today - just added a hover effect to items.
first time playing around with shaders, so that was interesting. it's just a basic white outline for now, but i'd like to keep playing with it and see what we come up with!
day... 7? 8? okay, i think i've officially lost count
been doing a lot of back end stuff that i can't show off very well. just things to make the code as reusable and well designed as possible. i'll do an in-depth devlog where i actually talk about that stuff someday when it's finished.
i noticed some issues where the inventory didn't expand when items were picked up while it was open, and that leaving a scene and coming back re-spawned items that had already been picked up. so i squashed those bugs!
the player can now also right-click to inspect items from in their inventory. the ui for that is a mess right now, lol. trust the process. it's working, that's what really matters.

day 5 - items and inventory!
things can be picked up now, but don't do much yet. one step at a time!
(bg and item icons are placeholders)
day ??? 4? - starting to look a little more like a real game
day 1 - prototyping
getting started with the most absolute basic ui elements and we'll go from there.
