Most fanworks of Hikaru tends to portray him as stoic and cold. But neither the more sympathetic Hikaru nor the serial killer cult leader Hikaru are like that in canon at all. In fact, I'd say he's pretty expressive, especially his younger self. It might be people holding on to old headcanons, which is something I can't blame anyone for doing because I'm in the same boat lol.

I think @wia-tia hit it on the head with their tags in that it's mostly a consequence of people engaging with Hikaru primarily via HikaAi shipping and wanting to exaggerate the perceived contrast between them - Energetic Sweetie x Stonefaced Stoic is a classic ship dynamic and I'm sure not immune to it.

Of course, this comes back to the question of exactly why this is the dynamic a lot of people attached to HikaAi because it's not really how they're portrayed in canon, but I think this again comes back to wanting to exaggerate a perception of him from the text - this time being his perceived similarities with Aqua. There was a pretty decent chunk of time where basically all the fandom knew about Hikaru was his appearance, the very very broad stroke of his backstory & relationship with Ai - and, of course, that he was the culprit. So they had to kind of make up a guy to do anything with him and I guess they just reverse engineered him from Aqua as a result.

I really love Ai and would be so happy to throw her a small birthday party someday, and since there isnt an official date i would love to hear your opinion on the subject.

I have great news! We do actually have a canon date for Ai's birthday - the LA drama signposts it as November 29th by having that be the date on the tweet she posts just before Ryosuke shows up.

It's also on her tombstone, tho I don't have a cap of that handy and it's pretty hard to see regardless.

Anyway I was insufferable when this info dropped because no word of a lie my HC date for her birthday prior to this was fucking November 28th so as you can imagine I felt mildly insane about this. Never Question Me About Anything Ever Again.

was looking over some of my very first posts about OnK (off Tumblr) and stumbled across something where I lightheartedly referred to Ai as "dysfunctional" in a passing joke and I paused over it for a second because like. Not only do I think that's not true but I actually think she's one of the most functional and well-adjusted characters in the series?? which, to be clear, is only something I am able to say because this is Oshi no Ko and the bar is in hell but

The thing is, Ai absolutely has a lot of dysfunctional beliefs about the world (though ones I would argue are founded on lived experience) and an even more dysfunctional upbringing, none of that stops her from functioning shockingly well on a day to day basis? She is a working professional (an exceptionally high-achieving one at that), a loving mother and a largely good person insofar as she is given opportunities to be. She clearly works incredibly hard. She's capable of managing a secret family while also being at the top of her extremely demanding career and doing it with enough grace that no one knows she's struggling. She is remarkably future-facing, in ways that are surprising when you consider how plagued she is by self-loathing and insecurity about her right to simply exist as she is - but she never allows that to get in the way of her working towards a future where she can genuinely love herself and her children.

Again, she has a lot of dysfunctional thinking patterns, largely stemming from her upbringing and lack of any stable support network and her coping mechanisms obviously could only go so far in terms of helping her, but like. Ai absolutely has her shit together in a way that most characters in Oshi no Ko can only dream of. Which, er, now that I say it, really is damning by faint praise, huh .........
