The vocal tracts of macaques, a group of Old World monkeys, are ready for speech. Their brains are not.
The vocal tracts of macaques, a group of Old World monkeys, are ready for speech. Their brains are not. Thatâs the takeaway from a new paper published in the journal Science Advances.
The research suggests cognitive differences, not vocal adaptations, among humans and other animals explains the emergence of language.
âNow nobody can say that itâs something about the vocal anatomy that keeps monkeys from being able to speak â it has to be something in the brain,â Asif Ghazanfar, a professor of psychology at Princeton University, said in a news release. âEven if this finding only applies to macaque monkeys, it would still debunk the idea that itâs the anatomy that limits speech in nonhumans.â
Also, this article is interesting. We can listen to monkey speech computer has simulated.
Why monkeys canât talkâand what they would sound like if they could
Analyzing x-ray stills from the video, the team assembled a collection of 99 different configurations of Emilianoâs vocal tract, which is the open space sound flows through as it emerges from the larynx, then flows over the tongue and out the lips. âEssentially, we built up a model of all the possible things the monkeyâs vocal anatomy could do,â Fitch says.
Next, the researchers employed a series of linguistic tools that measure which configurations of the lips, tongue, and larynx can produce the frequencies that correspond to various vowel sounds. Some languages have fewer than five vowels, the most common number, but vowels are essential to human speech. Calculating the macaqueâs so-called âvowel space,â Fitch and Ghazanfar discovered thatâat least theoreticallyâhe, too, could produce five distinctive vowels, roughly equivalent to the A, E, I, O, and U in English.
Finally, the researchers input Emilianoâs vocal tract configurations into a computer program that simulates vowel and consonant production given different anatomical settings. They picked a phrase that would show off a wide vowel range, âWill you marry me?â and ran it through a simulation of the monkeyâs vocal tract. Compared with a human, the simulated monkeyâs voice sounds flat and gravelly, but the words are clear and comprehensible. (You can listen below.)
