Alethea listened as he spoke, considering his words while still staring up at the void. What he said made logical sense, of course, but it still caused the emotional equivalent of an angry snake writhing in her stomach. Something bitter and afraid in her wanted to lash out, to bite and fight against his words, if only because he was right and it didnât like it. While she wanted nothing more than to just shut down - to do her job until she just stopped coming back to life - it was becoming increasingly obvious that that was less feasible than anticipated.
The woman let out a sigh.
âI was never meant to live at all. To⌠experience anything. Just death. So I am not sure⌠of how.â The fatigue of multiple emotional breakdowns over the past days was catching up to her, making it more difficult to articulate her feelings clearly. Not that she was adept at that to begin withâŚ
Alethea felt - and looked - tiny. Tired. Wilted and drained and in severe need of rest and nourishment. Before the exhaustion could further numb her senses - or worse, there was another bout of crying - there was a small sigh as she reluctantly turned to resume walking. âThe rooms are this wayâŚ?â
âThen you are no different than anyone else,â King replied. Who, after all, came into this world with plans and purpose already established? Who did not have to find their way from birth to death, stumbling blindly along the paths life set before them? None. The universe was cruel from cradle to grave and everyone suffered. All that ever remained to be determined were the details of the suffering.
King turned and looked Alethea over before nodding and gesturing with his hand. âYes. This way.â

wayward40kâ:
There was a silence from her, wrestling with the largely unfamiliar emotions that had been bombarding her as of late. They felt smothering, yes, but⌠Less like a blanket and more like the cloying muck of the battlefield. At least the mess of bloody mud and grime and sweat was familiar, and it could be washed away with some water and soap.
Emotions were more difficult, Alethea was learning. There was an overabundance of uncertainty, not sure of how to handle or react to the fear, the pain and loneliness and confusion and general human experience.
And after a long moment, there was a tired scoff of a laugh. âDo I have much of a choiceâŚ?â She asked him. It wasnât like dying was an option⌠and Alethea wasnât sure how she felt about that.
âThere is always a choice.â
The response came so quickly and so naturally, King had to blink as he processed it. Then he laughed softly, amused. There is always a choice. It was one of Radcliffeâs few recognizable teachings. The Lord Inquisitor was largely content to manage his conclave in a hands off style, letting individual inquisitors pursue their goals as best befitted their strengths and desires. But there were a few sayings and mantras Radcliffe expressed so often they eventually bled into the mentality of his juniors, and this was one of them. King had never imagined he would have taken it up, but here he was.
âThere is always a choice,â he repeated, turning to Alethea. âThe fates are only binding to the degree our actions and decisions become predictable. Each crossroad we come to splinters off in an infinite number of directions, though we might only be able to see but a few.â
King spoke as if repeating words he had heard dozens of times from someone else.
âYou have the choice to live or die. You might not stay dead, so to you it might not seem a choice at all, but you just do not see it properly framed. Do you let the man who tortured and abused you win? Do you waste away your time in bars and back alleys, on battlefields seeking pointless reprieve, or do you make the most of it? Do you help as many people as you can? Do you experience deeply, joy and grief, and understand the breadth and depth of humankind like no one else can? Do you, Alethea Crescere, live or do you live well?â

wayward40kâ:
She stopped, abruptly, as the gentle verbal prodding snapped through the fog numbing her senses, before looking around to get her bearings. Her gaze went up to the window overhead for a long moment, regarding the stars around them.
Alethea hadnât had much opportunity to see the void like this - she tended to stay in her quarters aboard ships, and the majority of travel was via Warp anyways. And it furthered the feelings of being⌠small. How tiny they were, merely motes of dust floating through space.Â
Perspective. A hand went up to touch at where she knew the meeting of the scars remained, from where the medicae had cut into her over and over. Was it an autopsy if she was alive? Alethea wasnât sure.
âWe got into an argument, over my reports. It⌠turned into a fight. And he⌠I was not expecting him to take it that far.â
King nodded, still looking up at the void overhead. âBut he did,â he said. âAnd thatâs on him. Itâs not your fault, and there isnât any reason to ponder what ifs. What happened, happened. Throne knows if any one had the ability to turn back time and fix mistakes, weâd all be jumping at the chance. The best we can do is process and keep moving forward.â
The inquisitor looked down at the woman beside him. Her emotions bathed her, their aura wrapping her like a blanket smothering a child.
âI think,â he continued. âThe best thing you can do now is to simply keep living. The man wanted to break you. Remaining unbowed is the surest way to deny him any satisfaction, in this life or the next.â
wayward40kâ:
Kingâs suggestion cut through the panic, causing her breath to catch as Alethea was jolted back to the moment. âY-yes⌠s-sorry. I-â Shaking her head, the Inquisitor uncurled herself and got to her feet. Unsteady as she felt, she was quick to slip back out of the room before anything else could be said. Hopefully before she just made things even more awkwardâŚ
And from there, she just sort of kept walking. While Alethea didnât know her way around the ship, the lingering emotions upsetting her needed to be vented somehow. Walking was as good an option as any. In theory.
King did his best to guide his fellow inquisitor through the corridors of the Rampant, if nothing else to just keep her from wandering aimlessly in her current state and ending up somewhere she shouldnât be. His efforts eventually led them to one of the observation decks located along the cruiserâs spine, just below the bridge tower.
Panels of armaglass twenty feet thick opened the ship above them and let in the void. The stars looked like pinpricks of white light against a backdrop of black velvet. Clouds of gas, multihued in the light of the local star, flowed across the glass as Rampant made its way sunward from the systemâs edge, like oil flowing over water.
King was silent. His gaze went up to the cosmic tapestry overhead, down to Alethea, and back up again.
âYou know,â he said gently after a while. âLooking up at the stars never fails to put it all into perspective.â
wayward40kâ:
Seven months, at the very least.
Seven months of torture, of not knowing if anyone even realized she was gone, of beggingly praying to the God-Emperor for mercy. For permanent death. For anything other than the hell that Gors subjected her to.
Thereâs a strangled sort of sound from her as she ran her fingers into her hair, tucking her head down to hide the fact that there were more tears beginning to crawl down her face. Alethea forced herself to take a deep, shaking breath, not even really hearing Kingâs âwhyâ. Another deep breath. Another. Almost gasping for air as she fought off the wave of despair, Alethea felt sick as she shivered.Â
Seven months⌠all over being gone for two weeks.
King didnât need to read the pall of emotions clouding the diminutive inquisitor to understand where she was emotionally, but he could feel them just the same. âAh,â he said slowly. He couldnât help the guilt that suddenly nagged at him. Maybe pushing Gors at the party had been a terrible idea after all. He should have known better.
Even Olk, blunt as he was to emotions and things of a psychic nature, was able to read the room. He glanced at King before picking his book up again and devoting his attention to it.
âMaybe we should go for a walk, Alethea?â King said gently.

wayward40kâ:
Olkâs question got a beat, before a sad sort of laugh was heard. âI⌠do not even know what day it is now.â Alethea admitted, trying to fight down the touch of panic that spiked upon thinking about the fact. âS-so no, I⌠do notâŚâ
At least it was getting easier to recognize when the random crying might start, so the small Inquisitor forced a deep breath, shivering as a momentarily queasy sensation washed over her. That wine hadnât done her stomach or nerves any favorsâŚÂ
âHow long ago⌠was that⌠that party?â Her question is quieter, directed at King while she didnât quite look at him. It felt like years, from her perception, but months was likely more accurate.
âThe party?â King exhaled loudly as if he were trying to dredge up memories he had not thought of in a while and apply them to a concept of time and space that was nebulous at best. âSeven months, maybe? Possibly eight?â
It had been a busy seven months in the interim, and so the inquisitor might be forgiven for losing track of the passage of time.
âWhy?â he asked. He remembered souring Gorsâ evening. Had that been when all this had started? His plotting? Surely he hadnât been torturing Alethea for that long, had he?
