nothinglorious:
Anyone who didnāt know Alistair might think him to be stoic. His features were hardened, a face of a man who had done what he had to help protect Ferelden. But in reality, he wasnāt. Formalities aside, he stepped down the steps and toward the Inquisitor and her party.Ā āI would never pass up an opportunity to meet you for more than five minutes. Iām quite intrigued by what youāve done so far for the good of not only Ferelden but also Thedas. Thank you, but I canāt take the credit. The Hero of Ferelden was the one who guided me, I would have been lost without her.āĀ
He hesitated a few feet in front of her and finally smiled.Ā
āIām sure you and your companions would like to clean up before we speak. Iāll have you shown to your quarters and we can meet in an hour.āĀ
A wave of his hand and a servant ushered forward, a smile on her face as she greeted the Inquisitor.Ā āIāll see you soon, Lady Trevelyan.āĀ

Was it just her, or did the King sport a very contagious smile? Before sheād even really realized it, sheād allowed the corners of her lips to tug up at the honourable words heād given her. She bowed her head to him, humbled. In all truth, this was the very first time that sheād been presented in front of a King. Sure, sheād had her good deals of Queens, Lords, Barons and Banns, but this was the very first time she was addressed by a King of such a large nation. During her time in the foreign continent, sheād found herself extremely fond of the Ferelden. They were the most down-to-Earth, hard working people sheād yet to meet.
āI wouldnāt deny such hospitality, your Grace,ā she said with a small laugh. Only if he knewĀ her urge to bounce around the walls, to rollĀ around in joy at the thought of receiving a good soaking and clean clothes. All in truth, Ćleanor found herself pleasantly surprised in the company of the King, even if it has only been mere minutesĀ in his presence. When sheād prepared herself with Josephine and Leliana to face him, her dearest NightingaleĀ had smiled and assured her of Alistairās presence being easygoing. Sheād initially found herself a little skeptical at that. An easygoingĀ King? In what sort of Makerās universe would that be possible?
āIām looking forward to it.ā She gave a firm nod at the King, her attention turning towards the servant afterwards. With that confirmation, she gave her followers a quick glance from over her shoulder, and they all moved to follow the servant through the Royal castle.
An hour later, without missing a minute, Ćleanor turned up at the Great Hall, led by one of the servants. No longer was she muddy and messy, but clean and representing. Her ebony hair was absolutely gleaming, slightly styled to present herself a little better in front of the King. She wore a short with a tasteful keyhole just below her clavicle, the tough, dark leader covered by golden embroidery - Vivienneās recommendation and design, of course. The pants she wore were dark, plain leather with matching embroidery. Her stomach grumbled at the sight of the food laid out, and she had to plant her hand onto her belly in hope to excuse herself - addedĀ to some prayers that the King hadnāt heard that. She approached him, subtly studying the man as she came closer.Ā āI hope I didnāt keep you waiting, your Grace.ā

Ā Ā A touch relieved that she had not been antagonized by the gentle PRODDING into her mental state, the commander huffed out an exhale heavier than intendedāakin to a SIGH after holding his breath for nearly too long. Prompt, he nodded his agreement at her wordsāhis understanding,Ā ratherāand when he felt the lingering of her eyes upon his face, he kept his own locked in what was now FEIGNED interest on the recruits.Ā
Why it occasionally became DIFFICULT to hold eye contact with her was beyond him. Or perhaps within enough of a reach of his coherence to be alarming and therefore ignored. He was ever so hasty to prevent his thoughts from dwelling too long on the⦠SUSPICION.
Ā Ā Distractions were dreadfully easy to come by.
Ā Ā Ā āIāve⦠yes. I suppose Iāve rather WELCOMED any preoccupations. Were any of us to sit around with nothing beyond our THOUGHTS for any extended period of time⦠well, what I mean isāā A real sigh this time, as he smoothed a hand through his hair and let it rest upon his nape. His brows creasing delicately, Cullen gathered the courage to glance at her again.
Ā Ā Ā āShould you require anything⦠or would simply fare BETTER to, ahāMakerās breath.ā He shook his head.Ā āIād never turn away your company, were you to come looking for mine.ā
There came that overwhelming feeling to bite down on her lip, just barely stopping herself from smiling like the goof she sometimes felt herself to be around him. The gesture of him rubbing his neck, followed by slight stuttering in his speech, were all qualities that Ćleanor had often noticed about him. Never had she witnessed any sight of them during their time in the war-room, much less whenever he was in someone elseā company before noticing her. Was it her that made him that nervous? Yes, while she did find the quality to be something that always made her smile, there was also the slight dread that her title and position as the Inquisitor made him uneasy.
She didnāt want that sort of distance; she wanted a little bit more than that professional relationship.
For once, she met his eyes perfectly, her pale-greens capturing his honeyed ambers. Her smile was back, genuine and even relaxed. āI appreciate it, Cullen.ā She reached out, and before thinking of it too much, she planted her hand upon his forearm. For a moment, she had to stop and think, for it may have been the first time theyād had contact when sheād been conscious. While it was still all blurry from the time amountain had fallen over Haven, she could vaguely remember him carrying her back into the camp upon discovering her in the snow.
And her smile was gone. Maker, she remembered just why sheād been a little shaky around him. There were subjects that they thought theyād buried in the snow with Haven, but it wasnāt going to be that simple.
She removed her hand from his arm. āCan I meet you later tonight? In your office? There is⦠something I must speak to you about.ā She didnāt want to sound so grim, she really didnāt, but there it went.

Nearly two week worth of preparations had been made to welcome the Inquisitor and her party; the various jobs having the Castle in disarray for too long. With the impending day now finally there, the King was finally able to walk the halls of his Castle without various members of the staff about, scrubbing walls and dusting paintings. Of course, rooms had been made up to accommodate them and he had made sure that their visit would be well prepared to their likings.Ā
Of course, he had already met the Inquisitor once, though it had been before she had been given the title. Then she had simply been the Herald of Andraste, though he had heard stories of her extreme discomfort regarding the name. He couldn'tĀ blame her for that, it was a title that held a heavyweight.Ā
He knew there would be much discussion on her choices, not only in Redcliffe but at Haven as well. They were discussions he wasnāt looking forward too, but he knew that they needed have an alliance with the Inquisition. He was doing this for the good of his country.Ā
Waiting had become very boring. He was all but lounging now in his throne, eyes closing every so often. He had been told of their arrival an hour ago and yet they still hadnāt made it to the castle yet. He had his men escorting them through the city, he knew how the people could be when it came to strangers and it was no doubt that word had spread of her impending visit.
The sound of doors opening brought his attention away from his thoughts and into the present and he quickly straightened himself, brownĀ eyes narrowing toward the door as he watched her and her party enter.Ā āYour Majesty, may I presentĀ Ćleanor Trevelyan, Inquisitor of the Inquisition and her party.ā Alistair gathered himself from where he sat, standing from the throne before descending down the few steps that lead to it and crossed the room to meet her.Ā āItās a pleasure to have you here, Inquisitor. Iāve heard much about you.āĀ
Here goes nothing. Ćleanor gave herself a little mental nudge as they were lead into the throne-room, their small party watched closely by the guards situated at both sides of the room. She couldnāt blame them for being a little wary in her presence. Almost absentmindedly, she clutched onto her corruptĀ left hand beneath her cloak, squeezing it tightly. While her control over the little burstsĀ of energy has been improving rather vastly the past few months, there were moments when it would activate beyond her control. She hated that; she hatedĀ the look of doubt and fearĀ in the eyes of the witnesses around her. And could she blame them?
No, for it even unnerved her. When would the day come when it would go haywire enough to open a portal inĀ the mentioned hand, then swallow her into the deep pits of the Fade? āYour Majesty,ā Ćleanor greeted, lowering her head in a humble movement. She and her companions bowed down before the King, showing their respects towards him. In truth, sheād always admired King Alistair. Sheād heard his story, of the sacrificesĀ and the shunning. To some degree, she has come to understand the form of struggles from his past, for his rise to the throne had been anythingĀ but easy. Both of them have come face-to-face with an Arch demon, and lived to see another day. The young Inquisitor held admiration for the Grey Wardens in general, as she did for their sacrifice.
She stood up after a while, lifting her gaze to regard Alistair.Ā āThank you for having us at such short notice.ā Josephine had sent them briskly on their way just after hoursĀ theyād received a message back from Denerim. Theyād rode fast and hard to get to the Capital, for timeĀ wasnāt something they could necessary afford. The days of harsh riding through treacherous weather had left them all looking tired. Ćleanorās short hair was disheveled, and there was a bit of dirt caked upon her features. Josephine wouldāve killedĀ her, had she spotted the Inquisitor in such a condition, to be presented in front of the King. No matter, she gave a polite and humble smile.Ā āAnd Iāve heard much about you, your Highness. The stories of you are inspirational.ā

Denerim.
The Capital of Ferelden, the revered holy cityĀ said to be the birthplace of Andraste. It was surely a sight for the eyes, for after having spent months from one ruins to a small village, then to more ruins, snow, and then even moreĀ ruins left for restoration, something so intactĀ and old was welcome. To get used to the slightly stuffier air in the city, as opposite to the crisp mountain breeze and the thick woods surrounding their path through their journey, was one thing. Not that it was a challenge, so to say, but it was just very... different. Ćleanor wasnāt quite sure which she preferred so far, for if she was completely honest. Their little partyĀ had been left as small as possible, specifically to see to the Inquisitorās requests on drawing as little attention as possible. It was one thing to get nailed as a hereticĀ by the Chantry for having gained aĀ āprosperousā title of Herald of AndrasteĀ by the people, but Maker helpĀ her if the inhabitants of the holy cityĀ were to catch a whiff of her. Ćleanor didnāt know what to expect, especiallyĀ when considered to how much she despised to be called a prophecy. As much as Josephine dissuaded her from speaking her mind out in such frank fashion, the truth was that sheād just been a womanĀ at the wrong place, and at the wrong time.
And with shitloads of luck to boot.
Their entrance to the Royal Palace had been... surprisinglyĀ smooth. She supposed that after having aided in subduing the rebellion, as well as helping the many civilians of Haven that they could, their standing with Ferelden wasnāt all too bad. They were about sixteen in total in their party, with Ćleanor flanking the rest as they were escorted indoors. Walking felt strangeĀ after having spent a whole day on the saddle without stopping. Theyād fallen short on the schedule as it was, and she really didnāt wish to start of a possible, goodĀ diplomatic relationship by insulting the KingĀ with tardiness. Besides, she wasnāt still fully assured that the King wouldnātĀ chew her for dumping a whole mountainĀ over a town. Sure, it was deeply necessary, and it had been the only way to save the refugees, but not allĀ had seen it like that. She could only hope that the King was reasonable.

Ā Ā Ā It had been slight, the endeavor to retain FACE and veil weakness so well practiced that the commander would have nearly MISSED it had his eyes not been lingering upon her. But she had been smiling from the start, and that which only came to WAVER in the very seconds of the shuffling of her feet. A cringeāa FLINCH that warped the humor once aglow in her eyesāand Cullen was alert to an entirely new problem. He barely permitted a BLINK before his attention abruptly shifted.
Ā Ā Ā Even when she casually attempted to EXCUSE herself.
Ā Ā Ā He first shook his head, DISMISSING her query of causing a disturbance, and his arms then dropped to his sides. āYouād neverāā The way his words trailed off betrayed any sense of that being all he wanted to say, and yet he fell silent. Thoughtful. Mulling over his next approach before risking TRIPPING over his tongue in efforts to express himself.
Ā Ā Ā āIāhow ARE you?ā A broad question, and yet spoken with the desire to not make it too obvious that he had noticed her spell of discomfort. āAll of this has happened so fast, and Iāve beenāI havenāt had much of a chance to really⦠check on you.ā
No such luck. Even if she was looking for a subtle way to back away from the situation that sheād brought herself upon ā publicity ā she couldnāt help but to give a little smile at Cullenās words. He was a busy man as it was, and he never tended to lack the ability on coming across frank. Sure, sheād taken great notice on how his demeanor tended to strayĀ a little in her presence. It intrigued her.
She couldnāt deny it by the slightest; she found his qualitiesĀ adorable, at times.
Well, she supposed it was only inevitableĀ for him to see right through her faƧade. Could she expect any less from the Commander of the Inquisitionās forces? Or as the rising name went; Lion of Ferelden. Itād be fruitless for her to try and lieĀ her way about it. She didnāt wish to come off as stubborn (which she most certainly was), or even worse, a martyr.Ā
So, she gave a relenting sigh, the corner of her lips tugged up.Ā āRecovering,ā she admitted, her eyes straying over from the recruits back to Cullenās features. Every once in a while, her gaze would slowly slide down from his gaze and to the scar over his upper-lip, tantalized. She tried her hardest to notĀ to stare, but that proved out to be a task in on itself.Ā
At his tone, she cocked her head to the side, eyes flicking back up to meet his.Ā āWeāve all been extremely occupied. When it comes to settling down, building up and taking in refugees at every passing down, itās... hardĀ to find time anymore.ā

Ā Ā Ā Rather unintentionally in SYNC with his companion, one of his own hands lifted from its refuge in the bend of his elbow, fingers curling gently in front of parted lips as he regarded the recruits still struggling to gather their footing again. A shake of his head, not in scorn, but near EXASPERATION at the display, but he was temporarily distracted by the words that rang out beside him. Attention flicked to her face, to the amusement crinkling her eyes, and perhaps it was what persuaded the faintest smile of his own.
Ā Ā Ā Again, he granted the fumbling newcomers a speculative look in light of Eleanorās positive remark, his expression nothing short of THOUGHTFUL. Spirit, perhaps. Hardly enough to keep them alive, much less win any BATTLES, but her point was valid. At least such determination could be utilized to produce something MORE.
Ā Ā Ā Which was precisely where he came in.
Ā Ā Ā A short exhale through his nose, like a minuscule laugh, āI will do all I can to ensure your confidence in me is not misplaced.ā Brows lifted to smooth out a countenance that had been briefly WARPED by the situation. āIāthank you, regardless.ā
The smile she donned was truly hard to rid, no matter how much she tried to wipe the look off of her face in aim to create a small illusion of momentary professionalism. Ever since their group had arrived to Skyhold, sheād felt a certain form of... freedom in her breath, so to speak. While it was very true that the claws of expectation and pressureĀ had taken an ever tighter grip around her throat, the recently granted title of InquisitorĀ unnerving more than she would be ever ready to admit, there was a huge deal of condolence in their new fortified home. They allĀ had much to adjust into.
āI wouldnāt worry about it too much, Commander,ā Ćleanor reassured, her smile returning momentarily. As she moved to shift her weight from one foot to another, she came to a brief halt, her features twisting into a grimaces. She hadnāt fully recovered yet from having a mountainĀ collapsed upon her, not to even mentionĀ of the cursedĀ demonic Magister, that had thrown her around like a rag doll. It was no good if the recruits saw her limping over herself. Her lips pursed together in thought, a small scowl creasing over her features.
āI hope Iām not disturbing you.ā She turned to glance at him once more, perhaps even hopingĀ for a dismissal, for her pride becoming a mighty foe to battle with by herself.

She tried soĀ very hard to subdue the chuckle that threatened to bubble forth, the backs of her gloved fingers held against her lips for a moment. Ćleanor could never cease to appreciate Cullenās strong efforts on keeping his men motivated, not to mention his adamant drive to train them to their potential. Even though their recruits were absolutely hopelessĀ to begin with, at least the Commander hadnāt given up on them. āIām sure they will be a fine addition to the troops at... some point,ā she remarked, trying her very best to see the positive side of the sad display. With her hands behind her back now, she allowed a smile adorn her features, offering the commander a sympathetic glance.Ā āBesides, they seem to have the spirit for it. Thatās something, too.ā Her eyes slowly dragged over from the two individuals towards Cullen, the brilliantly paled greens set upon his face.Ā āI have every bit of confidence that you can get them into shape.ā
