The use of torture compromises that which most distinguishes us from our enemies. […] I dispute wholeheartedly that it was right for them to use these methods which this report makes clear were neither in the best interest of justice, nor our security, nor our ideals that we have sacrificed so much blood and treasure to defend.

#randomstories I've decided to start something new. I built a small script that will pop me into a random photo in my Picturelife collection. From there, I go into the "Event" and will pick one photo with which to tell a story. Today's photo is of my pals Charles and Evan. Most of you know Charles – my co-founder in Picturelife and eternal artist/hacker. Also in this photo is my best bud Evan. Many folks in the NY and SF tech scenes also know Evan. He's probably the most outgoing people you'll ever meet and he and I met in Spain in 2003 (I'll tell that story another time with another photo). On the day this photo was shot, Charles had pretty much decided it was time to leave Picturelife and start working on his movie. This photo captures the conversation between Charles and Evan about the movie. Charles was really excited about it at the time, and a great thing about Evan is your excitement becomes his excitement. You can see that in him, right?

The following post is by Picturelife Senior Engineer Drew Cummins. It is the first installment in a series of posts from our engineering team. To download the technical paper, click here.
At Picturelife, we try to make the way you look at your photos as natural and enjoyable as possible....
An All New Picturelife
Today, we’ve launched a brand new version of our namesake app, and I think you’re going to love it.
There are way too many new features to list individually, but here are the highlights:
It just works – Picturelife has always been amazing when all your photos are in the Picturelife Cloud, but now Picturelife just works right when you download it on your phone – no account required. The new app brings incredible new ways to sort, view and share photos on your phone for people who are life-long Picturelife customers as well as people who just downloaded the app – no account required.
Places – Dive into your photo collection the way you took them: at that bar downtown, that weekend upstate last summer, or the big Japan trip. See your photos from where you are, or scroll off to distant places. It’s a great way to find photos when you remember where you were but not necessarily when.
Faces – Your photos with people in them are the photos you love most. Picturelife detects faces right in the app so you can find the people you love, instantly. Browsing through images face by face is an interesting (and sometimes funny) way of enjoying your favorite memories.
Faves – A first step. A first date. Your dog, being adorable. Favorites helps you keep your most important photos only one tap away.
Quick Actions – It should only take two taps to edit, share, or favorite. Our new app makes this all easier, and remembers what you do most.
I hope you’ll love the new Picturelife as much we do. For more information about the new app, go download it now!
Picturelife for Lightroom
For a long time, we’ve heard from from hobbyist and professional Picturelife customers alike: “We want a Lightroom Plugin!”
We’ve been listening, and today we’re excited to release the first version of Picturelife for Lightroom!

(I was searching this morning for photos of the Voyage of the Mimi set for the Apple IIe and couldn't find a single one. Instead I landed on this NY Times article, where I found the quote.)

We’re building a screen that will put the Internet on your wall. Not the noisy, cacophonous, distracting, attention-absorbing, permission-to-send-you-notifications Internet we have come to expect from our computers, tablets, and phones, but a quiet Internet, enjoyed peripherally,...
In the future, some of the art on your wall will be Electric. Lucky for me, that future is now, and I love it. Also proud to say I am an investor via Red Bud.
The Business of Coding
Last summer, I did a really fun podcast with Joe Stump called The Business of Coding. Joe's company is just now posting the interview, check out the Quick Left blog and listen to the other podcasts in the series.

The pricing war between Amazon and Google has finally arrived. And it’s good for everyone (including them).
My thoughts on this week's huge price breaks from Google and Amazon.

Getting reviews in the App Store is so important that I'd love to add one of those spammy pop-up thingys to Picturelife's iOS app.
When you're fighting to succeed, it's understandable if you go for the most effective weapon, right?
Well, we think it's wrong and so we're not doing it.
Instead, we posted about 7 ways to ask for App Store reviews that fit our idea of digital neighborliness.

The news broke today that Oculus is joining Facebook for $2 billion, and I couldn’t be happier for Palmer, Brendan, Nate, Laird and the amazing crew over at Oculus. Working with a team like this on a mission like this is why you work in, invest in, and love startups. As Santo wrote about, we fell...
Fantastic ride. Great lessons learned by Nabeel while it's still fresh.
My favorite version.
One of my favorite songs.
Sung by Arlo Guthrie, one of my favorite musicians.
Harmonized by Pete Seeger.
If you want to skip to the music, go to 1:15.
If you love folk music, listen to the whole damn album. It's one of my favorites.

Bonus: In looking for this track to share, I came across this gem. I had heard a bunch of versions, but not this: Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash singing it too.
