Sometimes long updates are worth the wait. Today should be relative simplicity: head to the airport, take a short flight and hit the hotel before sundown. However, relative simplicity is somewhat elusive here as I have painfully learned, and this little adventure heads south from minute one. Our pre-arranged sitter decided to achieve the impossible by attempting to sight an animal at the local zoo. I've had the privilege and it's quite difficult if you exclude the posters. So a late return meant a late pickup. At the airport, my passport is refused for having an incorrect number so boarding is flatly refused. None of the famed flexibility offered here so it's a number of calls to the person who gave my passport number incorrectly to get the airline to change what they have on the system. Twenty minutes waiting and we are heading through security. Boarding the plane sees yet another attempt by a local to sit in my seat. This is almost a guaranteed occurrence so I sight this as a known inconvenience. That the perpetrator suffered a bad case of 'pass the sick bag' a few metres from me made this flight doubly memorable. We also shouldn't forget being parked next to a field at the end of the airport grounds and a good two kilometre bus trip back to the terminal building. Next stop Captain Taxi: the guy who doesn't trust GPS (roughly translated as: I won't be able to con money out of people if I use this). A 45-minute ride to Holiday Inn turns into a 2-hour wild goose chase littered with u-turns, questioning members of the public, and stopping dangerously in the middle of busy roads. Still, we now know why maps and GPS are fundamental. And where Glaxo-Smith Kline's warehouse is. But the fun is not over yet. After a drawn out debate with Captain GPS over ten yuan (1GBP), check-in happens. Unfortunately, room 340 appears to be fully occupied. I hope the person showering wasn't too startled when the door slammed shut. Of course, reception emphatically denied there was anybody in the room as predicted. Denial, it seems, is the first and last response when it's time to hold your hands up and accept even a modicum of responsibility. Anyone know where I might find some common sense?
