Obviously, the work I make isn’t for everyone. I touch upon a lot of taboo subject matter, like violence and sexuality, which I understand is off-putting to a lot of people. I make work targeted at a niche audience and for this reason, I don’t take it personally when people choose not to listen to my music or when people, lacking requisite knowledge, misinterpret my work. I am, however, always surprised by the backlash I get, perhaps because I personally have never felt the need to express indignance or condemn others. If I disagree with someone, I’ll happily share my perspective with them, but I have never in my life felt that people with opinions I disagree with, or people who’ve behaved in ways I can’t condone, should stop expressing themselves, if anything, that would make me more interested to understand their perspective.
I believe with all my heart that honest self expression is the solution to all problems. I feel that many people commit heinous, sadistic acts because they were forced, by society’s taboos, to bottle up their emotions, their rage, their hatred and their revenge fantasies. People refrain from expressing themselves out of fear of being outcast socially, until they become so alienated and eventually snap and do something horrible because they had no one to talk to about what they were struggling with. I use writing and music as therapeutic outlets to keep me sane and get shit off my chest. I am also working to set a precedent so that more people will feel safe opening up about the thoughts that haunt them that they are too scared to express.
From what I understand, the people who advocate censorship are under the impression that audiences are incapable of distinguishing between fantasy and reality, that people listening to or making music about violence will begin to feel that violence is okay and it will cause a moral decline in society. They believe that people who listen to/dance to/sing along to music about, for example, rape or murder, are glorifying these things and will then feel inspired to actually go out and do them. For this reason, these people take a vested interest in me ceasing to express myself. Personally, I give my audience more credit than that. I think they are capable of entering into a bacchanal celebration of filth, cruelty, hedonism, violence and selfishness and then exiting that scene and returning to the everyday moral codes of their everyday lives.
