Not only does Han’s eyes never leave Leia’s, but when she looks at him, he starts to smile reassuringly at her. “It’ll be okay.” “It’s gonna be fine.” He’s still willing to smirk, if only that’ll mean reassuring Leia that it’s going to okay. Even though he might be dead within the next five minutes, “Look, Leia, I’m not afraid.” (Even though he almost certainly is. Even though he almost certainly is terrified.)

Wolves mate for life. An alpha male (Kylo/Ben) will mate with the alpha female (Rey) and this pairing almost always mates for life. It’s actually pretty rare for wolves to not mate for life.

Male wolves also tend to smell the females to see if they are ready for mating

So in conclusion, if we went with the Kylo as a wolf comparison, then we are almost through with the mating dance. All that remains is the actual copulation/penetration which leads to the breeding of the female and concludes with her pregnancy.

It’s fascinating to hear about the mating rituals of wolves and how they fit the dynamics of Reylo. The shoe really, really fits.  In fact, I’m pretty convinced that the notion of bonded / paired wolves directly inspired Disney / LF in shaping the dynamics of Reylo. 

As I’ve written about in my metas– probably most notably in my jealousy / possessiveness meta– Kylo displays heavy wolfish qualities.

Further, what’s even more is that Rey displays wolfish qualities, too, as you note above, and as I’ve also written about before here.

Rey first shows wolfish qualities in the forest on Starkiller Base, as you point out, and she continues showing her wolvishness in TLJ. What’s pretty incredible is that it emerges when she confronts Luke over creating Kylo Ren- which is directly after they just symbolically had sex in the Hut Scene.

Just like a bonded she-wolf, Rey wants to protect what’s hers. 

“[Luke] stared up into the rain, surprised, at the young woman standing over him with her teeth bared….She pressed the attack. Her confidence grew and she smiled wolfishly as she saw the surprise on his face.” (p. 182) 

She then literally goes on the hunt for her mate. And when she arrives on the Supremacy and realizes that her preferred mate (Ben) is still buried beneath Kylo, she attempts to hunt Ben out of Kylo.  

I’m just going to leave this quote here from the director’s commentary:

I’ve spent a bit of time looking into this and wanted to add a couple of points to @ben-solo-is-my-only-hope’s awesome insights about wolf mating behavior and its parallels in Reylo. 

So apparently there are 2 widely recognized wolf species– the red and the gray. (x) (“Gray” is a misnomer, because their fur can range from white to black). As @ben-solo-is-my-only-hope noted, gray wolves tend to form lifelong pairs. 

Further, although there has been some confusion, alphas very much do exist in wolf packs. [ @ben-solo-is-my-only-hope​ pointed this out originally, but I saw some debate in the reblogs]. It’s just that the original idea of the “alpha wolf” has been refined to extend beyond males– because, as it turns out, the alpha male and alpha female wolf run the show together.

“Biologists used to consider the alpha male the undisputed boss. But now they recognize two hierarchies at work in wolf packs—one for the males, the other for the females.” (x)

What’s really interesting is that usually only the alpha male and alpha female are allowed to mate within a wolf pack. They usually prohibit other pack members from doing the deed in order to preserve resources. (x) So breeding is one of their most critical functions.

Besides breeding, the alpha pair divides and conquers other major responsibilities in the pack. The alpha male is apparently critical in successful hunts and the protection of the pack, whereas the alpha female  “‘does most of the decision making’ for the pack, including where to travel, when to rest, and when to hunt.” (x)

In other words, the alpha male and alpha female are equals.

I’m realllllly intrigued by the thought that Disney / LF might be explicitly incorporating the idea of a bonded alpha wolf pair with Reylo based on: A)  all the explicit and implicit references to Reylo as wolfish, and B) the fact that their dynamic emulates what we know about the dynamics of alpha male-alpha female wolf pairs. 

 I even just caught another wolfish reference in the junior novelization: 

“‘Because he was a weak-minded fool,’ Ren snarled. She saw him standing in his lair on a Star Destroyer, shirtless, his torso as pale as bleached bone.” (p. 107)

[“Snarled” + “lair” + “bone” are very deliberate descriptive choices that clearly  evoke the image of a wolf.]

I mean… just… damn. I guess I’m left with one question: does this make Omegaverse canon?! 😂
