Kyubey

“ I don’t know why I can’t just lie… I wonder if everyone else struggles with this… although, some people seem to lie like it’s nothing. ”

“Dishonesty is a very hard thing to do because the mind wants to be right.”  The cat like creature replied.  “To lie is to convince your mind to reject reality in favor of a wrongness, and the mind wants to reject that.  That is why many humans are so bad at being liars, their mind is rejecting what they are trying to do.  Only people who can lie to themselves have ever found it natural, and those people tend to lose themselves in their own narratives, having a hard time accepting reality.  So the trade off is hardly worth it.”

“It is difficult to understand how to be kind to everyone when everyone has a different kind of kindness they expect.”  Kyubey replied, with a subtle hint of irritation.  It seemed that this imaginary friend had enough of the qualities of the shows character to be annoyed at the concept of being misunderstood.  Of course, at this point it seemed like they simply wanted advice to avoid future misunderstandings.  

      ———  “ Alright. Ready. ”  They glanced at Kyubey, giving the go-ahead as they pictured their wish in their mind. They didn’t really care what would happen at this point. Being a magical child had to be better than being doomed to wander an empty timeline for the rest of eternity, wouldn’t it?

While it was true that the initial cost would be worth it, there was a terrible truth to these wishes.  Reality did not like being altered in such ways, so for every wish there was a curse.  For all the hope that wish brought, an equal amount of despair would follow.  Frisk would be haunted by the shadow of their future, a shadow that would grow in Frisk’s soul gem until the day it becomes a grief seed.  Frisk would either die a hero, or see themselves become a twisted creature formed of their own despair.  That was the fate of all those who made a contract with Kyubey.

     “…Well aren’t you the weirdest little cat I’ve ever seen, but you’re pretty cute too! Let’s get you to the shelter, little guy,” Madeline said, trying to pick up the small being. Her hair wagging a bit, it seems she liked cats or at least thought this creature was cute enough to be friendly with it or try. She did have a soft spot for animals… even if she was bad at handling them sometimes.

“Hello there.” They said as they turned to face the person who had tried to pick them up.  “Do you need anything?”  Kyubey did not seem angry, despite the unwanted attempt to hold them.  In fact, they seemed almost welcoming in a way, as if they saw expected to get something they wanted from this encounter.

“A wish?? Do you take me for a fool? There’s no such things as wishes!” This thing was ugly and trying to con him right now! Maybe killing it would put him in better spirits?

Of course, the incubator didn’t consider ripping out one’s soul, and turning it into a gem a price so much as it was a part of granting the wish. They also considered eventually becoming a twisted creature of despair haunted by your own worst memories the natural consequences of a wish, rather than a price.  This tendency towards selective phrasing meant they were confusing at best, and deceitful at worst.

“Go make an offer to some bolt-less hobo or something.”

The incubator paused for a moment before continuing.  “Very well, if you truly have no desire for a wish, then I will take my offer elsewhere.”  The Incubtaor, made a motion as if to leave, but they took their time actually leaving.  It was as if Kyubey was anticipating the possibility that the doctor may change his mind upon hearing this.

         “I’d rather NOT deal with this right now! My head hurts after that fight.”

“We have no ill intent with you.  I simply wish to make an offer to you.”  The incubator said as the doctor walked by.  Apparently the reputation the Dr. Nefarious didn’t tell the incubator how much of a bad idea it was to offer him a wish.  While anyone who took Kyubey’s offer rarely benefited in the end, this was a gamble that put the entire galaxy at risk.

“If you will be patient, a Magical Girl should be arriving shortly,”  Kyubey advised as they waited for their ‘others’ to send a magical girl.
