Do you know if there is a polite way to say "your story sucks" when you're a reader? I start reading a story, excited to see what author has in store only to stumble upon a crime scene. All the motivation, agency, quirks and dreams of the characters are thrown away, in their place are lifeless husks that share a name with the original but nothing else. And I close the tab as quickly as I can feeling sick and disgusted. It takes days to forget what I've read and even then I shudder at the memory.
(cont.) And I don’t want to leave angry comment, because what if this was author’s first work? Maybe they see the original work differently? I don’t want to upset them or to make them want to stop writing. But on the other hand I really want them to know that I hated what they did. I usually say nothing and move on but is there a way to express what I think? And should I ever say anything? Thanks

Why do you feel so strongly that you need to tell them you hated their work? Why are your feelings more important than theirs? Because I guarantee that telling someone “your fic is a crime scene” or “your story sucks” or “I hated this so much it took me days to get over it” is going to hurt them.
There is no polite way to say that. There is no “nice” way to tell someone you hated something they made. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. If you tell them that, there is a very strong possibility you will make them want to stop writing. You could also make them cry. You will definitely at the very least make them feel bad.
Leave the fic. Forget about it. And if you have to rant to someone about it? Don’t rant at the author. Do it to a friend, in a place where the author will not ever see it.
