                      ❝   haha,  how hilarious,   ❞   the words slipped from azul's mouth with a smile that was far too polished to be sincere.  the joke,  if it could be called that,  flopped onto the conversational floor like a fish out of the water.  unwelcome and awkward.   as if every quip directed at the octavinelle dorm had to come with some aquatic pun,  as though being born of the sea meant he must forever suffer through fishy metaphors.   ❝   that was very clever of you,   ❞   

                      riddle wasn't wrong,  of course.  with him,  jade and floyd involved there was always something brewing beneath the surface. the problem was simply that azul had no intention of revealing what that something might be.  especially not to someone as rule-bound as heartslabyul's crimson tyrant.

                      ❝   you wound me,   ❞   words poured from merfolk's lips.  one gloved hand rose to his chest,  resting just above where a human heart might lie,  as if he were nursing an invisible injury.  his head tilted with a languid grace,  eyes glimmering with feigned offense.  of course,  he wasn't truly insulted.  how could he be?  skepticism was necessary whenever azul is involved.  and malleus had every reason to question the sincerity of azul.   

                      but this time  …  this time he had been honest.  and what a shame it was that no one ever seemed to believe him when he played fair.

                      ❝   oh,  i'm not stopping you from asking questions,   ❞   azul replied,  shoulders lifting in a shrug.  his expression was polite,  pleasant even,  almost too pleasant.  the kind of smile that concealed as much as it offered.  they were alike after all.  meddlers.  azul recognised the familiar gleam in their eyes.   ❝   whether you will get an answer,  now that is an entirely different matter,   ❞   he added,  the corner of his mouth tugging into a light smirk.

                      azul let out a languid breath,  the kind that carried the weight of reluctant acceptance  —  tinged with just the right amount of dramatic flair.   ❝   beggars cannot be choosers,   ❞   he murmured, the words accompanied by a casual shrug of his shoulders.   ❝   we both have our sources,   ❞   he conceded,  though his tone made it clear that this particular endeavour would prove thornier than most.   ❝   that infuriating dorm head remains maddeningly skeptical of everything i do.   ❞

                      for all the twists and turns life had thrown his way,  he did have bonds he cherished,  both by blood and by choice.  he knew well that not all at this academy could claim the same.  he had seen the gazes of those who had no home to long for,  heard the carefully crafted indifference in the voices of those who had never known love without condition.  yes,  he was fortunate.  he reminded himself of this often.  and yet  —  

                      the sting still came when his phone chimed with a name he had long since resigned to the shadows of his life.  his biological father.  appearing only when it suited him.  azul had yet to sever the thread  between them completely  —  not for lack of will,  but because,  as his stepfather had gently advised,  the time for that had not yet come.  a year more,  and then  ...  then perhaps he could do what he wants to do.  

                        the sound of footsteps by the door startled him,  and in his haste, the phone nearly slipped from his grasp.  quick fingers caught it just in time,  his composure only barely salvaged as he turns to acknowledge their presence.   ❝   dorian,   ❞   his stepbrother's gaze held the unspoken question that azul had anticipated.  he must not have masked his expression well enough.  yet it was what followed that made him pause.  then,  with a quiet inhale,  he cast the weight of that message aside  —  not forgotten,  not forgiven,  but less heavy.
