I like to think and wonder. Oh, so many things, i enjoy the sun and the beauty of summer as long as i can. Who knows whether one of these days i shall not be prevented from doing it?

Maria Nikolaevna was said to resembled Alexander III in appearance and strength. She was very strong. When it was necessary to move the ailing Alexei Nikolaevich anywhere, [he’d] shout, “Mashka, carry me!” She always carried him.

Her eyes, “Marie’s saucers,” as they were called by her cousins, were magnificent, and of a deep dark blue.

Young Tsarevich Alexei Nikolayevich Romanov with his Russian teacher Pyotr Vasilievich Petrov. Written on the board is a sentence of Vasily Zhukovsky’s poem ‘The Lark’ (it reads “At the sun dark forest reddened”).

The Tsarina had most recordings of her children destroyed, so it can’t be certain what Alexei actually sounded like, but many sources claim this is a surviving recording of him, taken while marching alongside his father.

Alexei was well aware that he might not live to adulthood. His beautiful face made me sad.
