Spirittale is an Undertale Alternate Universe where every soul can manifest a spiritual creature known as a Soul Animal — also called a Spirit Beast. These spirit animals are deeply connected to someone’s soul, emotions, personality, and hidden instincts. They are not simply companions; they are part of the individual themselves.
Long before the events of the story, the war between humans and monsters changed forever after monsters discovered the existence of Soul Animals. Through this mysterious spiritual bond, monsters gained powerful new abilities that could enhance their strength, senses, magic, and emotions. However, this power came with risks.
A soul can possess between one and three spirit animals:
Submissive Spirits are calmer and easier to control, but often weaker.
Superior Spirits are stronger and more dangerous, capable of granting incredible power.
Having multiple superior spirits can create violent internal conflicts within the soul, causing emotional instability and even physical pain.
Some spirits naturally coexist peacefully, while others constantly clash against each other.
The type of spirit someone possesses reflects who they are as a person. Brave souls may develop predator spirits, gentle souls may connect to peaceful animals, and loyal souls may form bonds with creatures known for trust and companionship.
One of the most important and dangerous aspects of Soul Animals is the spiritual bond they share with their owner. A Soul Animal is not separate from the soul — it is part of it.
Because of this connection:
If a Soul Animal is injured, the owner feels the same pain and damage.
If the owner is harmed, the Soul Animal becomes weakened or injured as well.
Severe emotional distress can destabilize both the person and their spirit.
In extreme cases, the death of one can cause the other to disappear entirely.
This bond forces monsters and humans alike to treat their spirits carefully. Some people protect their Soul Animals more than themselves, while others hide them away out of fear of vulnerability.
For many, a Soul Animal is both their greatest strength… and their greatest weakness.
Those connected to Soul Animals also inherit physical and behavioral traits from them. Depending on how many spirits they possess, these traits may be stronger or split between different animals. Some develop ears, tails, claws, sharpened senses, instincts, or unusual behaviors connected to their spirit.
But not all spirits live in harmony.
Over time, the power of Soul Animals led humanity toward extinction. Few humans remain alive in the world of Spirittale.
The story follows Clover, a 9-year-old human girl formerly known as Frisk, who possesses the spirit of a young puppy named Milo. Unlike many powerful spirits, Milo is still growing alongside Clover, forcing the two to slowly learn trust, teamwork, and emotional balance together.
Because of her puppy spirit, Clover has dog-like traits such as floppy ears, a tail, sharper teeth, and heightened instincts. Her spirit grants her loyalty, empathy, curiosity, and the ability to bond easily with others — but also fearfulness, attachment issues, and emotional sensitivity.
As Clover journeys through the Underground, she encounters monsters with their own unique Soul Animals, each shaped by their personalities, fears, and desires. Some have mastered their spirits completely. Others are controlled by them.
Unlike the original Undertale, Spirittale does not contain a Genocide Route. The story instead focuses on two main paths:
Pacifist Route — where bonds, trust, and harmony between souls can heal the world.
Neutral Route — where fear, imbalance, and difficult choices lead to uncertain outcomes.
In this AU, both "Chara" and "Asriel" are still alive as teenagers, playing important roles in Clover’s journey and the mysteries surrounding Soul Animals and the fall of humanity.
In Spirittale, the soul is not just magic.
