(AAAHHh I posted this on AO3 first! My apologies on how short this one is and how long to make!)
Chapter 4: Return to Reality
If one mission was accomplished so far, it's that they found Rev safe and sound.
And yet, from all they knew, the portal that started this insane surprise mission seemingly manifested out of thin air without any obvious origin besides that pillow, and what was the chance of that being just a horribly timed coincidence? Was it some bizarre power even Tech was unaware of after the meteor hit the planet that made itself known this morning?
The still not cold snowy weather welcomed them back outside the entrance of the academy. The trio who volunteered to fish the road runner out still remembered where the portal back home was, even if they were spat out from a few feet above the glimmering snow.
Ace couldn't keep all the theories to how this happened out of his head, and he thought to at least rule some out.
"Hey.. Uhh.. Tech, did you have any dreams like 'dis before?" Ace asked
"Of being hunted down by Black Velvet?" Tech turned his head to the bunny, hesitating to answer but.. Soon got the courage. "…Yeah, I do have reoccurring nightmares about her."
"Uhh… Lemme rephrase 'dat; did you have any dreams that somehow someone from da real world ended up in 'em?"
That got Tech thinking for a moment. He could recall some dreams he had where he felt… Stalked. But maybe that was just because of some fiendish apparitions his own mind conjured up during very much normal nightmares. But someone from reality being in a dream with him was new.
"I think this is the first time… Or least that I'm aware of."
"So 'dat means da meteor probably didn't give you weird dream… Portal powers…" That was one theory ruled out, but others still remained as possibilities.
When they finally arrived back to the portal, the scarf-clad dreamer knew if Zadavia called while they were away in his dreams, they were gonna have some unorthodox explaining to do. And the mystery behind this would probably not be a priority if some criminal, alien technology or even hacked robots were causing trouble.
"So what's the plan, chief? Before I wake up?"
"We're gonna hatch up a betta way to get to da bottom of 'dis in the real world." Ace told. "Does 'dat sound alight?"
"That… Would be better than wondering around here."
With that, Ace was the first to jump into the portal, followed by Duck and Slam.
"Bye-bye!" Slam waved before he vanished into the trippy colors.
"See ya in a few!" Rev.
Tech waved farewell, knowing he would soon join them back in reality…
Lexi paced back and forth, looking out the windows, sipping on tea, all almost to the point of impatience for the three of them to come back with Rev in tow. Zadavia was just as surprised as her when it came to the sudden rift in the living room, and explaining that it basically just manifested shortly after Tech took a nap might've given her an idea on where it lead.
Then, the sound of a few footsteps landing on the reflective floor made her turn around and see that Rev, Ace, Duck and Slam had all emerged from the portal in one piece.
"You're back!" Lexi nearly rushed over. "What happened? Are you guys okay?"
"It was AMAZING!" Rev beamed with delight "There was this weird trippy place, Black Velvet in the streets of what I thought was Acmetropolis, Tech was there too and we could travel through shadows with magical books at this school which looked like it came from a—"
"Hey, hey, take it easy, Rev!" Lexi giggled. "Explain it all calmly."
"Don't you forget the fact that Tech dropped a cow on me!" Duck butted in.
Ace tried not to burst out laughing. "Gee, I wonder where he got 'dat from?"
Lexi looked over to Tech and discovered that the strange portal was finally gone. Tech started to stir a little, signaling his escape from sleep. He only did a quiet grunt, his muscles refusing to obey him initially, moving his head to the side…And at last, his eyes began to flutter open.
"What time is it…?" The coyote drowsily rose up.
"Tech? How are ya feeling?" Rev zipped over and bent down.
"…Honestly?" Tech smiled without realizing. "Noticeably better than usual. What's up?"
"Oh MAN that must mean you're feeling better about that whole Black Velvet thing!" Rev glomped him before he could react.
At first, Tech had no idea what Rev meant by that. He thought he was still been dreaming at first, even if the one he just had not only felt real, he was shocked he even remembered it with the unusual amount of detail it had. Something about it still struck up as odd, as there was something to it he knew was out of the ordinary, and that wasn't even mentioning it going from a full blown nightmare into a lucid dream.
And just to be sure he really was awake…
"Hey, didn't you say to me that you came from this morning? As in today?"
"Yeah I did but that was because I didn't know I— I mean, how am I gonna explain this to you you'd probably wouldn't believe me one bit it's like super weird and I mean even weirder than usual!" Rev babbled.
"…That you hadn't traveled back to last night, rather you were somehow in my dream with me?"
Rev's eyes widened. "Yeah, exactly!"
That was all he needed to hear, turning around and picking up that pastel, possibly supernatural pillow, inspecting it for any possible answers to what happened. If it wasn't some power only known to his subconscious because of that meteor, where else to start but with what arrived in the mail with no label?
"Hey uh… Lex, did Zadavia call by any chance?" Ace asked. "Just askin' outta—"
"She explained to me what happened." That made Ace nearly jump to the ceiling
"YIPES! Y-You could've done that lil' sound first?!" The swordsman blurted out.
When Tech saw the lady herself, his heart nearly stopped; dropping the pillow and rushing towards his room to get changed before he could be seen as a slacker or some nitwit like Duck for another millisecond.
"A-And for your info… No, we have no idea how 'dat happened." Ace sheepishly explained.
It wasn't long until Tech came back almost sprinting in his black and green uniform.
"Chill out, Tech." Lexi reassured. "I told her what happened, you're not in trouble."
"You mean…?"
"Yes, I am aware a portal manifested over your head, Tech."
Tech felt his jaw hit the floor. For a moment he just wanted to wake up in his bed or the lab to find out this was a dream, but this was reality… And what was going to happen now? All of them but Lexi and Zadavia now knew about his recurring nightmare… Rev especially.
Who knows what would've happened if he didn't realize it was a dream in time…
Rev would've…. Ace would've… Slam would've…
… Duck, even if he still resented him for the entire Stomper incident, would've…
Tech…. Tech? Tech!
Tech snapped out of that dark train of thought to one of them calling his name, nearly jolting when they put a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey, I… I know 'dis was somethin' to take in." It was Ace, with Rev right there next to him.
"But we're gonna find out what caused that thing to happen so don't worry your head off." Rev joined in.
Tech already started to feel better about the situation… No matter the absurdity of it. Even if something more important had to be dealt with right now; he held strong to the belief he would solve this mystery, no matter how weird or otherworldly the answer was.
And he might as well get any distracting missions out of the way before he could properly start and explain to Zadavia later. This mission today seemed to be rather normal at first, but a strange detail Zadavia explained was that the attacks from an unknown culprit seemingly are exclusive to the night, never in broad daylight.
"Oh please, is this guy a vampire?!" Duck joked, that was responded with glares and Tech rolling his eyes.
There was essentially an guarantee that this "vampire" was just a normal (Well, for their standards, at least.) being rather savvy with vampire lore and an M.O of making their dirty work look like it, something that wouldn't even take a group of teens to figure out.
What other ridiculous hoaxes could he see unfold? Anything with a "curse", perhaps? A haunting on Palm Street? Something too bizarre to be taken seriously like say, zombies invading gardens and getting beaten by plants?
Yeah, right! That would give any canine a laughing fit, no matter how hungry or cowardly!
Now wasn't the time to dwell on such silly fantasies… He's got some work to do. Once he's finished, he can get back to solving this mysterious that maybe he quite literally dreamed into existence unknowingly. And if that's the case, he didn't wanna find out the hard way if any of his nightmares escaped his mind, no matter how tricky that might've been if they don't have a "real" body.
Once they packed up some gadgets and gizmos, the team soon made their way into the city…
