                         India’s solutions to cut milk waste - Inficold

With a view to cut down milk waste, Indian dairy cooperatives and farmers are using solar-powered cold chain solutions.

Many companies are also offering solar-powered cold storages to dairy farm cooperatives as they are operating where continuous power is an issue.

According to a joint study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) and MRSS, dairy and vegetable produce worth USD $440 billion goes to waste, due to unavailability of proper cold storage facilities in rural and other parts of the country.

This waste accounts for over 40% to 50% of the total production. The report also says India can only accommodate 11% of its country’s total perishable produce. With the huge scope in the cold storage sector, many private companies are coming up with novel products.

Milk waste

Currently, India produces 165 million tonnes of milk annually and is the world’s largest producer. However, over 3% or close to 5 million tonnes of milk gets wasted due to unreliable electricity supply. To minimise the waste, milk needs to be cooled at the source in order to increase its shelf life. To provide refrigeration, milk producers have to depend on diesel generators, which makes the cooling process expensive.

Inficold is a solution – a farmer can solve this problem and install the solar-powered system to its cold storage system already installed.

Inficold has retrofittable ice storage for cooling devices, the system can be installed on any bulk milk cooler, air conditioner or cold storage. The idea is to take electricity, convert it into ice and when there is no electricity, use the ice to provide cooling.

Speaking on this, the company co-founder & CEO Nitin Goel said that both the co-founders were working in the US when they believed that they could solve the refrigeration problem for perishable products.

Solar-powered medicine storage facility ready at Kozhikode medical college hospital

It is an exciting news that Inficold solar cold storage has successfully completed field trials for medicine storage. The system was installed at Kozhikode hospital about 1.5 years ago.

This system has an interesting story. It was originally designed and used for agriculture commodities. Later the system was shifted to a hospital post Covid for trials on storing medicines. It show cases the high tech nature of these solar cold storage units in terms of their reliability, control and temperature precision.

Traditional bulk milk coolers also have constant cooling rates at different milk temperatures. However, bacteria growth is much higher at higher milk temperature. The ideal solution should have higher cooling rates at higher milk temperature with no freezing possibility at lower milk temperature.

Inficold is addressing these challenges with thermal energy storage integrated bulk milk cooler. This system has an optional cooling backup in the range of 1 to 3 days. It eliminates the need of a diesel generator with only 8 hours of grid power availability any time of the day. This system also has 2 times faster cooling rates at higher milk temperature and cool milk to 10 C within 2 times lower time than required with a traditional ISO 5708 Class 2AII bulk milk cooler. Ice based cooling ensures that milk never freezes even when milk is below agitator level.

This entire system is fully automatic and does not require user intervention, thereby streamlining the milk cooling process as BMC operator doesn’t have to wait to switch ON/OFF the milk cooler till milk is cooled to 4 C. Inficold manufactures the entire system including thermal energy storage with SS304 material to meet high life expectancy and sanitary requirement of dairies.

The solution addresses the high food spoilage rates in India caused by inefficient cold-chain network. Large cold storages are quite often located in large cities, and farm/village level cold storage are primarily non-existent due to unreliable grid electricity. Grid resilient cold chain solution are necessary for India, which is one of the largest producers of milk, vegetables, fruits, flowers, fishes, and eggs, all being perishable commodities.

Inficold has integrated solar photovoltaics on cold storage in 5 to 100 MT capacity. The solar integration technology for cold storage was jointly developed in partnership with National Institute of Solar Energy, the autonomous institute under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.

The solar energy is stored in thermal energy storage for cooling during non-solar hours. These systems can automatically switch over to grid electricity if thermal energy storage is depleted below a minimum level. These systems can be configured by the end user in the temperature range of 0 to 20 C. Inficold design and manufacture solar powered cold storage in both container and indoor cold room options. The containerized units are quickly deployable and require minimal civil work at the site.

The cold storage is a multi-chamber one where one is used for storing flowers and horticulture products at cold temperatures, and the other chamber as ripening chamber for Bananas mainly.

20MT solar cold storage at India's only elephant hospital in Uttar Pradesh

India’s first and only Elephant Conservation and Care Centre was established by Wildlife SOS in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department. The centre rehabilitates severely abused and exploited captive elephants.

The centre has installed Inficold's 4 units of 5MT solar cold storage system for storing the fruits and vegetables for elephants about 1.5 years ago. The system has helped in reducing the procurement costs and gliding through the operational challenges during nationwide Covid lockdowns - all while maintaining the freshness and quality of the stored fruits and vegetables at almost NIL operational cost.

There is a strong need of small sized milk cooler for dairy farms or individual farmers. Traditional bulk milk coolers are typically not common for less than 200 & 500 Ltr capacity as the smallest diesel generator is 5 kVA in capacity, which consumes 1 L/hour of diesel. There are numerous incidences across India where farmers and even large companies have been using chest freezers to keep the milk cans, which has undersized cooling, freezing challenges, poor temperature control and no milk agitation mechanism. In absence of a reliable milk cooling solution at small capacity, the milk is forced to be sold at a lower price in local market during flush season.

Bulk milk cooler in the size range of 1000 Ltr capacity are the most ideal option for Indian dairy ecosystem. They are installed at a cluster of nearby villages. However, traditional bulk milk coolers are currently backed with polluting diesel generators.

The ever-increasing prices of diesel has significantly impacted the operational expenses of milk cooling. The milk cooling cost on diesel is typically 1 – 2 INR/L as compared to 0.15 – 0.25 INR/L with grid electricity. The pilferage of diesel, maintenance after every 500 hours of run time and environment pollution are other few challenges associated with diesel generators. In addition, the BMC operator needs to stay at the center till milk is completely cooled for switching ON/OFF the diesel generator. It has resulted in several short cuts adopted by BMC operators such as leaving the milk between 7 to 10 C during a power outage and cooling milk to 4 C before it is lifted by the milk tanker. These short cuts result in deterioration of milk quality.

A recent installation of multi chamber solar cold storage at a company dealing with organic fruits and vegetables. This allows storage of multiple commodities in three different temperature controlled chambers, all at their respective ideal storage conditions. India is lacking in multi chamber cold storage units as most of the existing cold storages are single chamber and designed for a single commodity.

This sounds like a simple problem to solve but this is India first multi chamber modular solar cold storage system.
