This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. I believe that as much as Ty Lee cared about Azula, she was also keenly aware from the beginning that Azula was dangerous to Mai and to herself. Ty Lee wasn’t going along blindly with Azula’s plans; she’d been coerced into them from the start, when Azula showed up at her circus show and made it so dangerous for Ty Lee to perform that she could have been killed. The second Azula posed a direct threat to Mai, Ty Lee jumped into action.

This? This is the face of someone who doesn’t hesitate.

Ty Lee wasn’t passive; she was just waiting for the right moment to strike.
